Summary

From the New York Times bestselling authors of You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey, comedian Amber Ruffin and her sister Lacey, a new collection of hilarious, intergenerational anecdotes full of absurd detail about everyday experiences of racism。

Families may not always see eye to eye; we get on each other’s nerves, have different perspectives and lives—especially when we consider how we've grown up in different generations。 But for the Ruffin family and many others, there has been one constant that connects them: racism hasn’t gone anywhere。

From her raucous musical numbers to turning upsetting news into laughs as the host of The Amber Ruffin Show or in her Late Night with Seth Meyers segments, Amber is no stranger to finding the funny wherever she looks。 With equal parts heart and humor, she and her sister Lacey Lamar shared some of the eye-opening and outrageous experiences Lacey had faced in Nebraska in their first book。 Now, the dynamic duo makes it clear—Lacey isn’t the only one in the family with ridiculous encounters to share! Amber and Lacey have many more uproarious stories, both from their own lives and the entire Ruffin family。

Recounting the wildest tales of racism from their parents, their siblings, and Amber’s nieces and nephews, this intergenerational look at ludicrous (but all too believable) everyday racism as experienced across age, gender, and appearance will have you gasping with shock and laughter in turn。 Validating for anyone who has first-hand experience, and revealing for anyone who doesn’t, Amber and Lacey’s next book helps us all find the absurdity in the pervasive frustrations of racism。 Illuminating and packed with love and laughter, this is a must-read for just about everyone。

I jumped at the chance to read The World Record Book of Racist Stories after You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey was one of my favorites of 2021。Similar to the last book, I bounced between laughing out loud and just being so angry with all the racism that the sisters Lacey and Amber encounter。 This time, they got even more people involved, with stories from their parents, siblings, and friends。There were things I appreciated about this book that were different than the first, such as som I jumped at the chance to read The World Record Book of Racist Stories after You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey was one of my favorites of 2021。Similar to the last book, I bounced between laughing out loud and just being so angry with all the racism that the sisters Lacey and Amber encounter。 This time, they got even more people involved, with stories from their parents, siblings, and friends。There were things I appreciated about this book that were different than the first, such as some of the stories of white privilege, which contrasted sharply from the experiences of the Black people。 This one, though, seemed to have a lot more banter and asides that didn’t really relate to the story。 While funny, they also seemed out of place。The book builds momentum as it goes, the stories getting more unbelievable as the book progresses (but sadly, we know they’re all true)。 The ones from their sister Angie, who’s a pastor, are especially memorable。Thank you to Grand Central Pub for my copy of the book! 。。。more

It feels strange to say that this book was funny given the levity of the topic of racism。 Yet, the stories of the authors' family and friends contained in this book are told in an entertaining, humorous, and conversational way。 It was like sitting down with Amber and Lacey, listening to them swapping stories with typical sibling rivalry and some ribbing being thrown around。 I imagine that the audiobook version of this book is a hoot! Some of the stories are so cringe-worthy that I just shook my head or rolled my eyes at the stupidity, willful ignorance, or stereotypes that some white people still evidently believe。 It was like a train wreck and I couldn't look away。 It's a fact that a middle-aged white woman, I can never fully understand the experience of the Black community in America。 By reading about the experiences of others, no matter what background or historical time period, we can grow in understanding and empathy。 While I laughed at times while reading this book, because let's be honest Amber and Lacey are amazing and humorous storytellers, deeper reflection on some of the stories brought anger, some tears, and motherly worry for the experiences that my 4 year-old Latinx son may someday face。 The World Record Book of Racist Stories is a comedic real life look at experiences of POC in America, and while you will laugh, there are deeper lessons to take away from it as well。 Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the finished copy of this book。 I am happy to provide my honest review。 。。。more

Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar do a fantastic job of shining a light on the racism that occurred in more subtle and blatant ways everyday。 They do this an approachable way with lots of laughs included。 Reading this book feels like sitting down for a glass a wine with friends and listening to their stories。 As the authors themselves say, eye opening for those who are lucky enough to not have to live through racism and validation for those who do!

Once again the authors have many eye opening stories, some are more serious in tone than their previous book。 This didn’t flow quite as well, probably because it jumps around between storytellers and also contains a lot of banter (sometimes unrelated to any story) between the sisters。 I liked this one but I didn’t love it as much as I did You’ll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey。 Thanks to the publisher for the gifted copy!

I have so many emotions about this book。 The stories brought out different levels of frustration and anger from me。 However, they banter between the 2 sisters through out the stories also gave me a bit of a chuckle。 I highly recommend everyone read this book as it is an eye opener of how much work still needs done。

The stories in this book are incredible。 What is wrong with people?! Some people I am sure have good intentions but fail, while others just have no clues。 I am glad this is all in writing and hope that people read it to realize how their behaviors affect other people。

I want to see one published about blacks being racist。 I have many, many examples I can start with…This book is just more hate mongering and divisiveness that liberals love。 Pathetic。Unfortunately I have to add this to my review since there seems to be some people who lack the ability called “reading comprehension”。 I HAVE read this poor excuse for a book, and this is my review like it or not。

Grateful to Edelweiss + for getting an advanced copy, but it would be great to hear Amber and Lacey read the book together。 There's more anecdotes, images, songs。 The final section on North Omaha is poignant - for all the bad that we see/hear, there is still some good to be found。 Grateful to Edelweiss + for getting an advanced copy, but it would be great to hear Amber and Lacey read the book together。 There's more anecdotes, images, songs。 The final section on North Omaha is poignant - for all the bad that we see/hear, there is still some good to be found。 。。。more

Disclaimer: I won this book from Publishers Weekly。This was a good book。 I was torn between laughing at the authors' comments and being disgusted that this stuff happens to Black people every day。Warning: This book contains swearing。Notes: I read an ARC (which was paperback and had only 219 pages), so I tried to not be bothered by the numerous instances of bad grammar and at least one misspelling。 It was hard。 I hope the mistakes were corrected before the book went to press。 (I understand books Disclaimer: I won this book from Publishers Weekly。This was a good book。 I was torn between laughing at the authors' comments and being disgusted that this stuff happens to Black people every day。Warning: This book contains swearing。Notes: I read an ARC (which was paperback and had only 219 pages), so I tried to not be bothered by the numerous instances of bad grammar and at least one misspelling。 It was hard。 I hope the mistakes were corrected before the book went to press。 (I understand books get printed around 3 months before the release date。 This book is due to come out in two months。) Also, why does Lacey's duck look like a bunny?P。S。 I guess Lacey had her hair in braids。 My first three guesses for Ned Beatty were wrong。 Was the answer "He Got Game?" 。。。more

It feels wrong to say I liked this book。 That it was funny。Stories of racism should be serious but these sisters made it relatable, funny, and serious。 Amber and Lacey have a definite gift for story-telling。I gave it four stars because it jumped around a lot and made it hard to follow at times。 I think the audio version is probably a joy to listen to。 The banter between the two sometimes gets lost on the page but I'm sure it sparkles listening to them talk。Would definitely read more by either of It feels wrong to say I liked this book。 That it was funny。Stories of racism should be serious but these sisters made it relatable, funny, and serious。 Amber and Lacey have a definite gift for story-telling。I gave it four stars because it jumped around a lot and made it hard to follow at times。 I think the audio version is probably a joy to listen to。 The banter between the two sometimes gets lost on the page but I'm sure it sparkles listening to them talk。Would definitely read more by either of them! 。。。more

I absolutely adore Amber Ruffin, so I knew I would like this book。 I also knew it would make me angry, but at least I would be laughing through the tears。 I still cannot believe how white people act。 I mean I 100% believe it, because duh, it’s just more of a general disgust for my own people。 But this book has an excellent message of how a strong family (and I don’t think it has to be your birth family。 Shout out to made families!!) can help you through the most challenging shit。 Lacey and Amber I absolutely adore Amber Ruffin, so I knew I would like this book。 I also knew it would make me angry, but at least I would be laughing through the tears。 I still cannot believe how white people act。 I mean I 100% believe it, because duh, it’s just more of a general disgust for my own people。 But this book has an excellent message of how a strong family (and I don’t think it has to be your birth family。 Shout out to made families!!) can help you through the most challenging shit。 Lacey and Amber pick on each other constantly, but the love is there。 And I’m glad it is bc they need that support。 。。。more

As soon as this book showed up on Edelweiss, I had to grab it。 As shocking as Lacey Lamar and Amber Ruffin's racist stories are, most of them are also hilarious。 Ruffin is a well-known comedian, and her sister Lacey is just as funny。 You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey is required reading in my book--and this one includes more stories from Amber and Lacey's friends and family。 Their parents, growing up in a different generation, share even more jaw-dropping (at least for us white people) As soon as this book showed up on Edelweiss, I had to grab it。 As shocking as Lacey Lamar and Amber Ruffin's racist stories are, most of them are also hilarious。 Ruffin is a well-known comedian, and her sister Lacey is just as funny。 You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey is required reading in my book--and this one includes more stories from Amber and Lacey's friends and family。 Their parents, growing up in a different generation, share even more jaw-dropping (at least for us white people) experiences。 Speaking of us white people, we need these books more for the reality check than the humor--but the humor is an added bonus as these women are kind enough to share their lived experiences with us。 。。。more

While this collection of real stories of racism experienced by comedian Amber Ruffin, her sister, Lacey Lamar, and their friends and family members is laugh-out-loud funny, it also forces us to recognize the racism in our own lives。 If you haven't experienced it, you may be causing it, and that is the take away of this book。 While this collection of real stories of racism experienced by comedian Amber Ruffin, her sister, Lacey Lamar, and their friends and family members is laugh-out-loud funny, it also forces us to recognize the racism in our own lives。 If you haven't experienced it, you may be causing it, and that is the take away of this book。 。。。more
