Summary

Since The Karate Kid first crane-kicked its way into the pop culture stratosphere in June 1984, there hasn't been a week Ralph Macchio hasn't heard friendly shouts of "Wax on, wax off" or "Sweep the leg!" Now, with Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso in the #1 ranked Netflix show Cobra Kai, he is finally ready to look back at this classic movie and give the fans something they've long craved。

The book will be Ralph Macchio's celebratory reflection on the legacy of The Karate Kid in film, pop culture, and his own life。 It will be a comprehensive look at a film that shaped him as much as it influenced the world。 Macchio will share an insider's perspective of the untold story behind his starring role--the innocence of the early days, the audition process, and the filmmaking experience--as well as take readers through the birth of some of the film's most iconic moments。

Ultimately, the book centers on the film itself, focusing on the reason that the characters and themes have endured in such a powerful way and how these personal experiences have impacted Macchio's life。 It will bring readers back to the day they met Daniel LaRusso and Mr。 Miyagi for the first time, but will also provide a fascinating lens into how our pasts shape all of us and how the past can come back to enrich one's life in surprising and wonderful ways。

The only caveat I would give to potential readers/listeners is that Macchio focuses almost solely on the first Karate Kid film and it’s impact on himself and pop culture。 And it’s fascinating。 If you were hoping for a glimpse into his family (be it before or after his film success) it’s very sparse。 Or if you were hoping he’d talk about his other film, stage and TV work it’s also pretty sparse。 He mainly brings up his turns in My Cousin Vinny and The Outsiders (probably because of their critical The only caveat I would give to potential readers/listeners is that Macchio focuses almost solely on the first Karate Kid film and it’s impact on himself and pop culture。 And it’s fascinating。 If you were hoping for a glimpse into his family (be it before or after his film success) it’s very sparse。 Or if you were hoping he’d talk about his other film, stage and TV work it’s also pretty sparse。 He mainly brings up his turns in My Cousin Vinny and The Outsiders (probably because of their critical acclaim) but leaves much of the rest of his work undiscussed (his insight into The Three Wishes of Billy Grier in particular would have been welcome considering his chapter on retaining his youthful appearance。) He’s also kind of repetitive when it comes to mentioning the success of Cobra Kai, which certainly is his right to do ad it is earned by all concerned (and he eagerly gives the credit away to his cast-mates and those behind the camera。) It just ays into a theme of the book in which he dwells on success as a perspective and it does get a bit old。 。。。more

As a huge Karate Kid/Cobra Kai fan, Ralph Macchio's new book Waxing On: the Karate Kid and Me was a great read。 While not a polished writer (constant "I will write about this later" or "I wrote about this earlier"), I heard Macchio's voice as he recalled in an easy-to-read and personable manner his recollections of making the Karate Kid movies (with emphasis on the first one) and its continuing impact with the current Cobra Kai series。 The reader comes to understand why Macchio guards the Daniel As a huge Karate Kid/Cobra Kai fan, Ralph Macchio's new book Waxing On: the Karate Kid and Me was a great read。 While not a polished writer (constant "I will write about this later" or "I wrote about this earlier"), I heard Macchio's voice as he recalled in an easy-to-read and personable manner his recollections of making the Karate Kid movies (with emphasis on the first one) and its continuing impact with the current Cobra Kai series。 The reader comes to understand why Macchio guards the Daniel-san character and rightly so。 There were several nuggets I had not heard before。 The book is well-organized and presented with chapters on reflections of making the films, with particular emphasis on the first one, followed by reflections on his interactions with Zabka and Lisa (Elizabeth Shue)。 He follows with chapters on the importance of balance and what he regrets doing and not doing。 Sprinkled throughout, and reiterated, is his admiration for Miyagi/Morita and how and why the new Cobra Kai series brought him back to reprise the role of Daniel。 A worthwhile read for fans of Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, and/or Cobra Kai。 。。。more

This was a fun, easy read that I enjoyed。 It was fun and interesting to read his journey from becoming the karate kid to now。 He shares lots of fun memories of almost and what ifs in the choices he made。 Always been a big fan and enjoy his movies。 The book reads like he’s actually talking to you。 You can hear his voice in the words。 He’s a genuine nice guy with a positive attitude toward life。 This comes through while reading his story。

Like many other readers of this memoir, I grew up as a fan of The Karate Kid, and am a big fan of Cobra Kai! This book is all about Ralph Macchio's life and how he grew up in acting。 The first part is about how he got the part, the making of the movie, and some behind-the-scenes, untold stories。 The second part is about what happens in his life and career after Karate Kid。 And the third part is about the lessons that came from those experiences and what he could do after acting: how could he fulfill himself creatively and still provide for his family? Most memoirs are about the crash and burn, but this is more of a redemption story and how he applied "Miagyism" to his own life。I found it interesting when he talked about the fame and what it was like to be an overnight celebrity after Karate Kid, even though he had been in The Outsiders。 I didn't expect the parts when he talked about trying to find his way into roles and how he felt typecast。 I grew up in the 80s, so I loved going back and experiencing that time again。To listen to my interview with the author, go to my podcast at:https://www。momsdonthavetimetoreadboo。。。 。。。more

Oh Ralph! This book warms my heart on so many levels。 My dad was in the Army when I was a kid in the 80s, he travelled for work, as most soldiers do。 I remember my dad going to see Karate Kid with me, my mom and sister。 We loved it and spent many hours goofing around with my dad playing at karate and doing "the crane" kick。 Dad got sent to Okinawa and he brought back an Hachimaki for me。 Hissho,。 Which translates to certain victory。 I still have it to this day。 This book。。。 Karate Kid and now Co Oh Ralph! I got an Advanced Listening Copy (narrated by Ralph himself) from Penguin Randomhouse and needless to say, I finished listening in less than a day。This is not a memoir of Ralph’s life so much as it is a memoir of his life coexisting with Daniel LaRusso (how he came into the role and it’s effects thereafter)。 Or, as one could say, different but same。 In this book, Ralph weaves together his experience on the original films and Cobra Kai interspersed with his life at that particular time。 He includes anecdotes about his costars (including the cast of Cobra Kai), his hilarious thoughts on theories of “who is the real bully”, and encounters with fans (some even by name - how cool!) - to illustrate just how much these characters mean to people。 Ralph also stresses how important the legacy of The Karate Kid is to him。 He describes how Cobra Kai came to be, his initial reaction and protection of the Daniel-Miyagi relationship。 I found myself starting to cry when he spoke of his friendship with Pat Morita and I think that speaks to the point of the magic they captured in their respective roles。If you are a diehard fan of the original Karate Kid movies and current Cobra Kai series, you will enjoy this book。 Thank you to Penguin Randomhouse audio and Ralph Macchio for the ALC。 I have loved The Karate Kid for my entire life - this was not only entertaining, but very special for me ❤️“Waxing On: The Karate Kid and Me” releases October 18th!This review will be shared to my Instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly! 。。。more

He should have。 He still should。 It was actually a nice edition)。I enjoyed it。 Read it basically in a day。 The nostalgia with background and explanation - man you can't ask for more than that, can you?Phillip Tomasso 。。。more
