Summary

Emmeline and William Pershing have enjoyed a perfectly convenient marriage for eight years。 Their relationship is a seamless blend of their talents and goals。 They’ve settled into separate, well-ordered lives beneath the same roof, and are content to stay that way—or so Emmeline thinks。 And if William has secretly longed for a bit more from the woman he adores, he’s managed to be content with her supreme skills as a hostess and planner, which has helped him advance his career。

Then when Emmeline’s grandfather, the reclusive Duke of Welshire, summons them both for his birthday celebration and demands they bring their two little angelic children, William is stunned to discover that his very proper wife invented not one, but two heirs to fulfill the agreement for living at Winnover。 But surely if Emmeline and William team up and borrow two cherubs to call their own, what could go wrong? Enter George, age 8, and Rose, 5—the two most unruly orphans in Britain。

As the insanity unfolds, their careful, professional arrangement takes some surprisingly intimate turns as well。 Perhaps it takes a bit of madness to create the perfect happily ever after。

Rating: 3。5 out of 5 starsTW: infertility, parental death (past), use of the “g” slur, often associated with travelers (this is a regency era book, but the slur is used several times throughout typically, in relation to buying or selling children)Thank you SMP Romance for the free book for review consideration。 Full RTC The story was enjoyable but I won’t reread it。 There is no sex in this book, but the romance is sweet albeit a bit sparser than I was expecting。

DNF'd at 65% but I'm counting it on my goodreads challenge because it was enough effort to get that far that it counted as a whole book in my mind。I absolutely loved the premise of this when I first read it and I went into it expecting a lively, passionate story and it was not that in the slightest。 I found it dragged so much, there was very little action in it and the character stories weren't compelling enough to keep it moving, and the romance aspect of it felt practically non-existent。 I was DNF'd at 65% but I'm counting it on my goodreads challenge because it was enough effort to get that far that it counted as a whole book in my mind。I absolutely loved the premise of this when I first read it and I went into it expecting a lively, passionate story and it was not that in the slightest。 I found it dragged so much, there was very little action in it and the character stories weren't compelling enough to keep it moving, and the romance aspect of it felt practically non-existent。 I was just bored, and it was so unexpected and disappointing since the book started with such a good premise and a lot of charm in the first chapter。 。。。more

Rose and George are so unbelievably precious。Spoilers。Let me begin by saying that I've been in a really bad place recently so picking something up like this is just the perfect way to give me a little boost。 This is probably why my rating is a tiny- just a tiny bit- generous。 I'm telling you my 5 stars mean something different every time I rate a book so that's your warning。---I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK。 The way I am with The Bridge Kingdom if I'm being entirely honest。 I wished it took me more Rose and George are so unbelievably precious。Spoilers。Let me begin by saying that I've been in a really bad place recently so picking something up like this is just the perfect way to give me a little boost。 This is probably why my rating is a tiny- just a tiny bit- generous。 I'm telling you my 5 stars mean something different every time I rate a book so that's your warning。---I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS BOOK。 The way I am with The Bridge Kingdom if I'm being entirely honest。 I wished it took me more than a day。 Or that it was double the size- I KNOW people will scream at me for saying it。 This book is so warm and sweet and makes me feel safe and so homely and comforting。 It makes me smile and it's cute and full of interaction and it's just comfort。 Pure comfort。 It's by no means perfect but it's perfect for me right now。 ----If anyone is bothered to check- which not one person will be- I've just read Luna and the Lie and it was 500 pages of repetition- I mean I checked and the sentence 'I was fine。' was used 46 times。 That is WAY too many。 And although this book didn't particularly repeat sentences, it DID repeat character thoughts。 A LOT。 Which may or may not have left them a tad bit one-dimensional。 BUT I DON'T CARE。 TBH comparing the last book I read to this one- it literally felt like this book was too short but again I DON'T CARE if anyone says it was a drag。The reason why I so passionately don't care is because I am utterly obsessed with the family dynamic。 The book is your romcom written- it's like parental guidance if I were to pin it down to a movie。 Maybe they aren't the grandparents but they are 2 adults who have taken in children and have to deal with what it means to raise them- albeit for the limited 8 weeks。I'm assuming that a lot of people are here for the romance。 Reconnecting Will and Emmaline was a priority but it was pushed back。。。 way, way back to focus on the children。 This wasn't really about the romance- the romance was more in the form of rediscovering each other in the most generic way possible but there MAY have been one or two cute moments for you to melt onto the floor over。 Having said that, is one or two moments enough for an entire novel- probably not。。。 do I care right now? No。Now that I've got the romance and repetition out of the way let's talk about what the book actually involves。So we have Will and Emma。。。 Emma and Will- the perfect partnership。 Married because she wanted the house and he wanted her。 He settled and I guess she did too。 They work well together。 After all, he gave up having a loving wife, family and house for her, and in exchange, she would help him achieve his political goals。 I will just quickly mention that I didn't particularly like how the sister was cast off right from the start because she liked the colour pink and was bossy。 Okay, they are NOT the best traits but I feel we needed a bit more background and substance than JUST that。 Especially when we actually do see her at the end and she gives a spiteful comment out of nowhere- I didn't expect the level of hostility。。。。 but whatever。 Back to the marriage-The agreement stated that she must have had an heir to keep the property forever。 Well。。。 given this sham of a marriage- the partnership didn't really lead to any baby-making uhum。 They tried for 7 months but it didn't really get anywhere and the pure mention of how she felt uncomfortable and later separated rooms gave me a deep sense of uncomfortableness too。 I did feel slightly upset (but nowhere near wanting to cry btw) that she went to her mother's physician who called her infertile- given she'd been trying for 7 months。 As well as how her mother basically taunted her about how not everyone can be a mother etc。。。 I know Emmaline didn't particularly like children until after the kids but STILL。。。 it's a horrid thing to say。 On a seperate note, I feel sorry for Will too slightly。 She was the love of HIS life even if he wasn't, particularly, the love of hers。。。So 8 years pass and eventually Emmaline's Grandfather sends a birthday invitation which states:'I expect you and William to attend the festivities, along with Malcolm and Flora。 I would have all my relations gathered around me so that I may be assured of the immortality of my bloodline as I look towards the grave。'And here comes the confession of Emmaline's made-up children thus leading to the journey of finding children。 After no one they know can meet the requirements of a 7 and 5 year old so they go to the orphanage。 I WANNA MAKE IT CLEAR that I did begin to dislike these 2 adults quite a bit here。 Taking the 2 vulnerable children away- especially when we first meet them- to further their own agenda was horrid。 And if I'm being entirely honest, not one single person was buying their excuse of 'doing good' and 'giving them an opportunity' or whatever other nonsense they used to console themselves。 It was wrong。 There should never have even been the idea of sending them back to begin with。 I know with all the technicalities it was what seemed reasonable but to do that was just plain wrong。 The mere mention of repeating the process in a few years' time was also - quite frankly- disgusting。 Especially when all of this is being done to allow an already rich couple to keep their house。 It may have led them to downsize dramatically but they've lived a life of comfort and the socialist in me is saying it is not okay。 But again we pursue for the sake of Rose and George。Just before I get onto Rose and George I really want to say that the communication was so。。。 different to what I expected。 The compliments felt more sophisticated than a normal interaction。 Like 'you did a good job' 'that was brilliant' 'you have a great mind' 'you're doing well' 'you handled that great' - I know the adults are meant to be mature and all and it DOES show that difference but AT THE SAME TIME it makes this TOO PROFESSIONAL。 I can't believe I'm saying it but I miss toxicity。 Like no one ever really compliments people like that- at least not in the books I read。 It was so innocent and at the start quite odd but I think I'm beginning to like it。。。 slightly。 IDK HOW TO FEEL BUT I NEEDED TO SAY IT。----Everyone KNOWS exactly where this is heading。 Everything knew right from the very start that these children will win the hearts of Emmaline and William AS WELL AS the readers。 They're from the orphanage。 They've had a hard life even given their young age。They are masterful pickpocketers and thieves。 Rose the perfect distraction for George's sticky fingers。 Rose's innocence and also maturity is quite striking。 She's so adorable and cute and carries this entire novel on her shoulders。 The back and forth banter between the 2 of the children is amusing to say the least。 However, George is different。 He's older。 More aware of what's going on。 He plays the most adorable protective older brother role。 Observant and cautious he wants to make sure he and his sister are safe。 George also struggles to trust which is quite obvious- he's been stabbed in the back (figuratively) by his brother and adults one too many times and he won't be making any sort of mistake like that again。He wants to make sure he follows the rules。 He gives up swearing- I LOVED the swearing- but continues to thieve。 They steel biscuits, candles, niknaks around the house, and not to forget the cutlery。 Knives, forks, and spoons all slipped into pockets and were taken to their not-so-secret hiding place。 Overall, the children are wonderful creatures and they deserve every last thing in the world。 I will defend them with my life- okay that's a bit of a stretch- but you get it。 I feel what I loved MOST is every moment when the 4 were developing as a family。 My life is wayyyy too complex to think about so having it all stripped back to the simplicity of these 4 individuals was。。。 nice。 Moments where Will is teaching Rose fencing or 'swording' as she likes to call it。 Or when Emmaline is teaching George how to read and write。 The moments are so precious。 I know I said that the romance isn't all that but the moments we do get are worth something too。 From the second they touch hands, or have their first dance, or when they have their little argument during their Waltz。 It all adds up to something so much more wholesome。 Yes, their motivations were unacceptable but I'm in the mood to forgive and forget and while I may not forget (purely for the kids' sake) I will forgive。 I could read their family scenes for ages with a silly smile all over my face。 If I stem away from this discussion again。。。---Jack is also a side character that's introduced。 The brother that's come of age and is ready to take them back。 Jack's bad。 Really bad。 He steals and gets the kids to steal for him too。 He gambles away most of the money and gives the kids scraps。 He can rot。 I wish William stuck the bloody pitchfork through his forehead because the dude doesn't know when to stop。 HE THREW GEORGE IN A POND WHEN HE KNEW HE COULD SWIM FOR THE SAKE OF TEACHING A LESSON。 I'm sorry but I want to cross his name out every time I see it and stick a picture of him in my imaginary burn book。 And while I'm on the topic of Jack- it was quite obvious why he was there。 Why he had to stay。 Where it would lead to and you could ultimately predict how it would end。 The fake panto was pushing it slightly but the playful nature of the book means I can't criticise too much。 I feel like there should've been just a little something more。 Like how can every single one of the staff like their employers? Really, no one, not one person, was going to snitch? or back stab? or take the perfect opportunity to steal some goods for themselves? I personally would've- don't judge。At the end, everyone is reunited for the birthday and George has an argument with one of the boys。 The argument was about how the other boys could tell George didn't belong- I don't really see how they could've possibly figured it out but that's a story for George to tell (I'm purposefully skimming over all the problems because I'm biased to the book)。 At which point everyone has arrived to see what the fuss is about。 During this scene the entire extended family is exposed to the secret。 Emmaline and WIll initially try and blame it on the sickness and the kids being sheltered their entire lives。 However in a moment of courage, Emmaline decides she'd rather have the children than the house。 Off she goes to restate the real truth。They go home and begin packing and eventually the grandfather comes back and tells them that he'd rather they keep the house because the sister is just horrid and will turn it into crap。 We also discover he really was a nice person all along。 The whole book is just prepackaged in its nice little perfect box。 Everything is neat and organised and wrapped to perfection。 Simple and elegant and put simply。。。。 nice。 Oh, I forgot to mention。 A quick reference to the side characters- I liked all the serving staff。 Special recognition to Powell, Hannah and Billet and the cook Mrs B-You make the book better- take a bow and a round of applause。 Oh, and special thanks to all the advice Diedre (from the orphanage) had bestowed on the young ones。 Everyone else can go screw themselves。 And I think that's it。 If I reviewed this exactly when I had finished- it would've been 5。Since I've had time to think it over it's a 4If I was being entirely honest with myself it's probably a 3So I go with the middle number for 4。 。。。more

Suzanne Enoch used one of my favorite trope: fake wedding , in a very different and surprising way。The prologue made me super curious about how the plot would develop and I rooted for the couple a lot。

Something in the Heir by Suzanne Enoch is a bit of a far-fetched story, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't want it to end。 It is the story of Emmeline and William Pershing, a couple brought together so she wouldn't lose rights to living at her family home, Winnover。 Once her parents decided to move out, per her grandfather's (The Duke of Wilshire) demands it would go to whichever of her or her cousins was married first。 Her mother broke the news when Emmeline wasn't even yet engaged and she Something in the Heir by Suzanne Enoch is a bit of a far-fetched story, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn't want it to end。 It is the story of Emmeline and William Pershing, a couple brought together so she wouldn't lose rights to living at her family home, Winnover。 Once her parents decided to move out, per her grandfather's (The Duke of Wilshire) demands it would go to whichever of her or her cousins was married first。 Her mother broke the news when Emmeline wasn't even yet engaged and she did not want to give up Winnover, especially to her newly engaged horrific cousin。 Emmeline quickly was able to round up her childhood friend, William, to marry her。 The second stipulation was that she had to produce an heir within five years。 Emmeline and William weren't able to have children so they 'borrowed' a couple of orphans to satisfy this portion of the command when they were required to attend her grandfather's birthday party。 These children, George and Rose, were quite spirited, to say the least, and it was questionable whether or not the plan would even work out。 The story moved along at a good pace and there were a lot of hi jinx and fun to be had。 Thanks to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for the eARC。 All opinions shared are influenced by nothing other than my own reading experience。 。。。more

Will they finally fall in love? Does the writer pull it off well? That is all up to you, the reader, to find out if and when you decide to read the book。 。。。more

William and Emmeline marry in order for her to claim the family house。 While they were friends (and William harbors romantic feelings) this is more a partnership than a marriage。 When no children are conceived, their relationship turns strictly business。 Fast forward eight years and it is discovered that Emmeline has lied to her family through correspondence that they in fact have two children。 Heirs, it turns out, are a part of the contract that allows her to keep the home。。。hence, the sudden need to produce said heirs! And that is when all the fun and hijinks begin with orphans George and Rose。Yes, the story is predictable, but the kids are adorable, and it is fun to see the developing relationships between all the characters。 。。。more

Thank you to St。 Martin's Press for providing me with an eARC for Something in the Heir。 All of the following views are my own。 Something in the Heir centers around Emmeline and Will Pershing, childhood friends who agreed to a marriage of convenience in order to keep Emmeline's home, Winnover Hall。 The catch is that in order to keep it for the remainder of their lives, they must have produced an heir within the first five years of marriage。 Now eight years into their marriage, Emmeline reveals t Thank you to St。 Martin's Press for providing me with an eARC for Something in the Heir。 All of the following views are my own。 Something in the Heir centers around Emmeline and Will Pershing, childhood friends who agreed to a marriage of convenience in order to keep Emmeline's home, Winnover Hall。 The catch is that in order to keep it for the remainder of their lives, they must have produced an heir within the first five years of marriage。 Now eight years into their marriage, Emmeline reveals to Will that she's convinced their families (and most of the ton) that they are parents to two children, Malcolm and Flora。 The only problem is they only exist on paper and with an upcoming milestone birthday for her grandfather, those make believe children must become real。 They find a set of orphans, George and Rose, who closely match the made up descriptions and decide to train them for eight weeks so they can pull off their elaborate web of tales。With witty dialogue, shenanigans to spare, and a renewed romance, Something in the Heir quickly became one of my favorite releases this year。 This was my first Suzanne Enoch novel and because I quickly fell head over heels for her writing, it certainly won't be my last。 I would recommend this for fans of The Parent Trap, The Sound of Music (George and Rose did remind me very much of the Von Trapp children), and India Holton's Dangerous Damsels series。 。。。more

Didn’t really make sense。 Also, Hannah and Tom had the same amount of romance as Emmeline and Will。 What’s up with that? I would give the book a 5 if they had included more romance between them。 I was really looking forward to Emmeline and Will exploring their relationship when I first picked up the book。 So a bit disappointed with that。 I still really enjoyed it which is the most important criterion for me。 。。。more

Reading "Something in the Heir" by Suzanne Enoch was a true joy。 From the beginning, Will Pershing and his disheveled mop of dark brown hair grabbed me by the heart。 He's the quintessential charming, patient and kind boy-next-door, and Emmeline's creativity and self-depricating nature endeared me to her as well。 This story is a delightful comedy of errors。 Concerned with his bloodline, Emmeline's grandfather, the Duke of Welshire, has conditioned residence within Welshire Hall upon marriage and Reading "Something in the Heir" by Suzanne Enoch was a true joy。 From the beginning, Will Pershing and his disheveled mop of dark brown hair grabbed me by the heart。 He's the quintessential charming, patient and kind boy-next-door, and Emmeline's creativity and self-depricating nature endeared me to her as well。 This story is a delightful comedy of errors。 Concerned with his bloodline, Emmeline's grandfather, the Duke of Welshire, has conditioned residence within Welshire Hall upon marriage and children。 When Emmeline is faced with the possibility of losing her childhood home to her scheming cousin after her mother decides to move to Bath, she enters into a marriage of convenience with her best friend Will。 The only problem? They're unable to have any children。 Unknown to Will, Emmeline has taken care of things by inventing two sweet, if sickly, kids。 When the Duke summons everyone to his estate for a family birthday party, the two of them must come up with real-life children to play the part。 What follows is a story of found family, rediscovered love and enough hijinks to keep you laughing most of the way through。The story is told through multiple points of view, which allows the reader to have a fuller picture of the story as it enfolds。This book is for anyone who loves:❤️‍🔥 Historical romance (FYI: Closed door)👰🏻 Marriage of convenience😍 Friends to lovers🗣️ Multiple POV😁 Light-hearted banter👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Plotlines involving found families👑 A satisfying happily-ever-afterNote: Please be aware of the trigger warnings this book contains, including infertility, loss of parents (off-page), petty theft and dysfunctional families。Thank you to NetGalley and St。 Martin's Press for allowing me the chance to read and provide an honest review of this book! I've posted this review to my social platforms, Amazon and B&N listings and on GoodReads。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Actually rated a 2。5。 The best character was Rose。 I can’t believe Emmeline and Will went 8 years without actually engaging with one another。 I like that the kids brought out the more loving side of them。 I’m glad it all worked out for them to tell the truth and keep the house, but it was just a lot of empty space happening in the book that left me thinking there was little value added, such as the whole fiasco with James。 Did he REALLY have a purpose in the book when he was run off so easily? It would’ve made more sense for it to be one of the staff to create that level of conflict。 Meh book。 。。。more

This book was a charming, quirky and had such a cute concept。 The situations the characters get in were a bit unbelievable but really funny。Some of the book was repetitive and there were a few scenarios where I was just thinking “but why?” Outside of that, the characters were heartwarming and I loved how everything turned out in the end。

This is a romantic story that happens backwards- the pair become engaged in the opening pages and spend the rest of the novel gently falling in love。 However, the romance is done very subtly and it isn't the main focus of the book。The heart of the novel is the relationship Emmaline and William develop with the two orphans they borrow from the orphanage。 Rose and George are hilarious and totally adorable。 I loved how they expressed themselves whether it was polite or not。 It was heartwarming to w This is a romantic story that happens backwards- the pair become engaged in the opening pages and spend the rest of the novel gently falling in love。 However, the romance is done very subtly and it isn't the main focus of the book。The heart of the novel is the relationship Emmaline and William develop with the two orphans they borrow from the orphanage。 Rose and George are hilarious and totally adorable。 I loved how they expressed themselves whether it was polite or not。 It was heartwarming to watch them interact with William and Emmaline as well as the staff and slowly bring laughter and friendship back into the household。 It was difficult not to like the children and hope that Emmaline and William would resolve their issues and find a way to adopt them and save their home。There were a few twists involving the children's older brother that added extra drama。 The inevitable HEA for the new found family was heartwarming and uplifting。 A really charming and delightful story that I found difficult to put down。 。。。more
