I’ve had an up and down relationship with Richard’s Thursday Murder Club series。 I absolutely adore the man and so was thrilled when I saw he had written a book in 2020。 However, as eager as I was to read it, I unfortunately didn’t like it。 Talking to other people, I seemed to be in a very small minority who didn’t, but I read it and decided I probably wouldn’t buy the sequel。But then I got sent an advanced e-copy of the sequel The Man Who Died Twice by the publishers, and thought “What have I g I’ve had an up and down relationship with Richard’s Thursday Murder Club series。 I absolutely adore the man and so was thrilled when I saw he had written a book in 2020。 However, as eager as I was to read it, I unfortunately didn’t like it。 Talking to other people, I seemed to be in a very small minority who didn’t, but I read it and decided I probably wouldn’t buy the sequel。But then I got sent an advanced e-copy of the sequel The Man Who Died Twice by the publishers, and thought “What have I got to lose?” It hadn’t cost me anything so I thought I might as well give it a go。 And I loved it so much I read it in 2 days,So when the third came out, I preordered it and got stuck in, and once again, read it in 2 days。 So, following this pattern, it only makes sense for Richard to hand-deliver me a copy of book number 4 himself。He’s evolved massively as an author, you can really see the development in his character writing, storytelling and pacing。 He’s really developed the characters and they’re all becoming fully-rounded, with their own likes, dislikes, wit and charm and they’re all lovely。 And now I can understand the rumour that Steven Spielberg has bought the rights to it。I also really liked the chapter lengths。 I’ve said it before that I am a fan of many short chapters rather than a few long ones。 And the chapters in this…well, some are only 1 or 2 pages, but they tend to be around half a dozen, and that works perfectly for me。Whilst I enjoyed this immensely, I did think points were perhaps a bit rushed or…。no, not rushed…。underdeveloped maybe。 It’s hard to fully explain what I mean without spoiling it, and the last think you want when going into a crime book is to already know the twists and turns, so I’ll keep mum。I liked the introduction of new characters like the Viking, Victor, Pauline, Mike。 They fitted in nicely with the characters we’ve got used to over the series, but they’re not there as spare parts, they’re as important to the story as the familiar facesI think the theme of Stephen’s dementia (shouldn’t be a spoiler as he’s had it since book one) is very nicely handled。 You can see the progression of it but it’s not over the top or disrespectful。 As someone who has witnessed the deterioration of a loved one with dementia, I found it had been tackled very sensitively and in a very honest way。There were a couple of things that were left open ended。 That could be because it’s going to be touched upon in book 4, or it could be so the reader can make their own decision, and I didn’t mind that。 Sometimes you can feel shortchanged when an author does that, but I didn’t think it negatively impacted the reading of it。There’s obviously the main plot point, but there are a handful of smaller ones that all work seamlessly together。 They’re not lengthy or confusing or pointless, they all make sense and you can easily see how they’re linked。 Overall, I think this is his best book yet。 He is progressing nicely with each one, which bodes well for the next instalment。 It’s uplifting, adventurous, action packed, emotional, moving, hilarious, warming, compassionate and just a really, really good read。 。。。more

I had been so excited to read the 3rd instalment of the Thursday Murder Club series and now having finished it I can say it did NOT disappoint! I was initially disappointed that the audiobook narrator had changed for this book from the others in the series, however by about 25% of the way in I managed to get over it。 I was very much invested in these characters。 The mystery is decent too, but certainly or me it's all about the characters and the tone。 It feels so solid and well written to me, certainly a cosy mystery。 I will definitely be continuing with the series。 I was initially disappointed that the audiobook narrator had changed for this book from the others in the series, however by about 25% of the way in I managed to get over it。 I was very much invested in these characters。 The mystery is decent too, but certainly or me it's all about the characters and the tone。 It feels so solid and well written to me, certainly a cosy mystery。 I will definitely be continuing with the series。 。。。more

Hardop gelachen。 Ik hoop dat deze boekenserie nooit eindigt。

Inspiration for the old and not so。Richard has again demonstrated his keen observation talents of older human behaviour and integrated his humorous descriptions into a well structured crime plot。 Throughout I was constantly entertained by the development of seriously dramatic scenes metamorphosing into comical farce

Clever and funnyThe familiar cast of characters is augmented by a few new faces, as quirky, unconcerned with conventional notions of morality, and irresistibly likeable as the rest。 The plot is convoluted but satisfactorily wrapped up in the end, but the real charm of this, as in the previous novels in the series, is the dialogue: witty and frequently laugh-out-loud funny。

Probably the best of the series! The Thursday Murder Club sort of expands to some new delightful members I hope appear in the future — welcome to Pauline, Viktor, and Hendrik!

Grace

I hope these books don’t get adapted to film/tv。 What makes these characters are so likable and endearing are what they think and say to themselves。

Denise Fiddis

brilliant and funnyEven better than the first two。 Laugh out outdoors funny。 The characters just keep evolving and the crimes are entertaining too

I have read and re-read the first two books in the series。 Yesterday I bought The Bullet That Missed, and I just finished reading it。 Tomorrow I will begin reading it again。 The ever-more complex characters, the consistently intriguing plots, the humorous/sweet/brutal highlights and twists all serve to make these books readable and captivating throughout。 The idea of a bunch of geezers getting together to actively solve cold cases sounds like ridiculous cozy fodder, but after a few chapters of T I have read and re-read the first two books in the series。 Yesterday I bought The Bullet That Missed, and I just finished reading it。 Tomorrow I will begin reading it again。 The ever-more complex characters, the consistently intriguing plots, the humorous/sweet/brutal highlights and twists all serve to make these books readable and captivating throughout。 The idea of a bunch of geezers getting together to actively solve cold cases sounds like ridiculous cozy fodder, but after a few chapters of The Thursday Murder Club, you start to become a believer。 。。。more

Another fantastic read from Richard Osman, The Bullet that Missed is a triumphant third book in the Thursday Murder Club series it flows seamlessly from beginning to end。 The characters are wonderful as always , the usual suspects plus a few new ones, it was an absolute pleasure to read。 I read it in one day whilst nursing a horrible cold and it was the perfect antidote to feeling sorry for myself。 Easy to read , intriguing, funny…it has it all。 Highly recommended!

Good fun, a nice and easy read as always。 I did notice the font size was a bit large though and am beginning to think that maybe the target audience is a good thirty or forty years older and that’s why every else isn’t as fussed about them as I am…

I am so happy the gang is back! Osman's characters have to be some of my favorite books characters of all time。 I adore the way Elizabeth loves her husband Stephen, I think it is really quite romantic。 And he seems happy enough in the life he lives with her。 It must be so heartbreaking to live with someone who has Dementia, never mind how confusing for the person you has it。 I also love how Bogdan cares for Stephen too。 It's really quite heartwarming。 I really enjoyed that a couple new character I am so happy the gang is back! I love these books! I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2 and I had high expectations and this didn’t disappoint。 If you were to tell me the plot, a bunch of oldies investigating crime I would think what a bore! But it works, super light hearted, funny and I just love the gang。 Looking forward to book 4。

Homely, incredible。 The best yet。 Absolute highlight of the year when the Thursday Murder Club get another release。 No book has ever made me excited to get old before, or made my heart feel quite as full and connected to characters。 Incredibly, with a few more newcomers to get used to, this still isn’t lost and each character has wonderful quirks and iconic ways about them。 I can’t wait for more…

I simple love these books。 The gang of pensioners are brilliant, diverse and so distinctly differentiated in what they bring to the story, how they think and relate to one another。I want to live out my golden years in a community surrounded by friends like this crew, trying to keep my brain sharp and body moving。Well done, again, Richard Osman!
