Summary

Space opera meets Bridgerton in an exciting new science-fiction fantasy adventure by bestselling author Jennifer Estep。 Perfect for readers looking for a mix of magic and technology and for fans of soul mates and enemies-to-lovers stories。

A WOMAN WHO SEES EVERYTHING 。 。 。

Few people know the name Vesper Quill。 To most folks, I’m just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers and other household appliances in the research and development lab at the powerful Kent Corp。 But when I point out a design flaw and a safety hazard in the new line of Kent Corp starcruisers, everyone knows who I am—and wants to eliminate me。

I might be a seer with a photographic memory, but I don’t see the trouble headed my way until it’s too late。 Suddenly, I’m surrounded by enemies and fighting for my life。

I don’t think things can get any worse until I meet Kyrion Coldren, an arrogant Regal lord who insists that we have a connection, one that could be the death of us both。

A MAN WHO CAN’T FORGET HIS PAST 。 。 。

The name Kyrion Coldren strikes fear in the hearts of people across the Archipelago Galaxy。 As the leader of the Arrows, the Imperium’s elite fighting force, I’m used to being a villain, as well as the personal assassin of Lord Callus Holloway。 Even the wealthy Regals who live on the planet of Corion are afraid of me。

But everything changes when I meet Vesper Quill。 I might be a powerful psion with telepathic, telekinetic, and other abilities, but Vesper sees far too many of my secrets。

Thanks to an arcane, unwanted quirk of psionic magic, the two of us are forced to work together to unravel a dangerous conspiracy and outwit the dangerous enemies who want to bend us to their will。

Only Bad Options by Jennifer Estep is the first book in her Galactic Bonds series。 As noted, many times, I am a big fan of Jennifer Estep, having enjoyed all her fantastic series。 I was thrilled to learn that she was starting a different kind of new series, and after reading the first book, I can’t wait for more。This series centers on Vesper Quill, our heroine, who works for Kent Corp, in their research and development lab。 Vesper is considered a lowly lab rat and a seer, she has uncanny ability Only Bad Options by Jennifer Estep is the first book in her Galactic Bonds series。 As noted, many times, I am a big fan of Jennifer Estep, having enjoyed all her fantastic series。 I was thrilled to learn that she was starting a different kind of new series, and after reading the first book, I can’t wait for more。This series centers on Vesper Quill, our heroine, who works for Kent Corp, in their research and development lab。 Vesper is considered a lowly lab rat and a seer, she has uncanny ability to find flaws and fix anything in high tech equipment, as well as brew makers/appliances。 She discovers a terrible conspiracy, and before she can point it out, the tables are turned, and she is sent away to be eliminated。 Kyrion Caldaren, is a powerful and arrogant leader of the Imperium Arrows, who is known to be the most notorious assassin, having killed many; he reports directly to Lord Callus Holloway。 During a battle, Kyrion accidently meets the low lab rat, who is sent out to fight the battle in front of them, knowing Vesper was expected to not survive。 But she manages to use her seer knowledge and experience on the weapons used, Vesper manages to save herself and Kyrion。 Kyrion, at first, is not planning on saving her, but in a short time, he finds her abilities intriguing。 They start out as enemies, with Kyrion thinking she is a spy, and in time they become partners in stopping the evil Kent family, who have teamed with the enemy。 What follows is an exciting, action filled, suspenseful story that kept me unable to put the book down。 Vesper was a great heroine, as she was not only smart, savvy, but her abilities was amazing; as some of her other abilities, allowed her to see things beyond, an discover many secrets。 In time, I began to like Kyrion, who earlier was not really likable。 Only Bad Options had a Galactic theme, with seers, powerful psion, magic, telekinesis, telepathy, as well as spaceships, blasters and great technology。 The last third of the book was extremely tense and exciting, with a few surprises along the way。 I enjoyed watching Vesper and Kyrion begin to work together, as they eventually made a great team。 I will not tell too much more, as it would be spoilers, but it was a wild satisfying ending。Only Bad Options is a different and intriguing Sci-Fi and Fantasy new series that is very well written by Jennifer Estep。 I loved both Vesper and Kyrion, and look forward to see what Estep has planned in future books。 I suggest you read Only Bad Options, as I fully enjoyed it。 BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

Plus, Jennifer has never written sci-fi before, so I was very excited to see what she would do with the genre, and it turns out that it was amazing! I loved this world! But that should come as no surprise because I pretty much love anything this author writes 😆This book follows Vesper who is this sort of inventor for a big company。 But Vesper discovers that there’s something shady going on in the company and now everyone wants to shut her up。。。 permanently 😬 One thing I just have to mention is that at one point Vesper is smuggling something and she uses nail polish and nail art to hide it, and as a nail artist myself。。。 👀 。。。I was like YES! 😆 I obviously really enjoyed that。 Lol。 But I just liked that Vesper was smart and was able to think on her feet。And then we have Kyrion who is the leader of an elite fighting force and quite the badass。 But he was also a complete dick when we first met him, all because of the unexpected connection that happens between him and Vesper。 And as the story progresses and you get to know these characters better, you understand why Kyrion is the way he is。One of my favorite things about this book was actually that: getting to know the characters and watching as their relationship developed。 One thing I was worried about going into this was that this book has this sort of soul mates thing going on, and when you have the soul mates trope, it usually means intalove, which I hate。 But this book did NOT have that and I was SO happy! In fact, it had the slowest of slow burn romance and I was here for it! Could I have used more kissing? Yes, but honestly I much prefer this to instalove。I also really loved the whole enemies-to-lovers trope and them realizing that they have to trust each other if they want to get out of this whole situation alive。 They had these very sweet moments where they opened up to one another and talked about their childhoods。 Vesper's mother was absolutely awful, and while the relationship between Kyrion’s parents might have seemed like something out of a fairy tale to outsiders, in reality it was not。 Especially when you realize what led to their deaths。 And it was all so heartbreaking! I probably would’ve cried had I not been reading this in public。 Lol。 But yeah, their relationship toward the end of the book was。。。Another thing I loved about this book was that not only was it sci-fi, but it was a mix of sci-fi AND fantasy, and I really enjoyed that! On the sci-fi side of things, we have the sort of futuristic setting with all the high tech things: appliances, buildings, ships。。。 all the things! Like I previously mentioned, I’ve been very into sci-fi lately, so I really enjoyed this aspect of the book。 And the thing I feel like Jenifer Estep always excels at in her books, is the fantasy elements! In the case of this book we got swords and characters with different kinds of magic。 Vesper has seer magic that basically tells what's wrong with something/how it works, and how to make it better。 It’s why she’s a lab rat (and a good one at that!) at the company she worked at。 And Kyrion is an empath and has telekinesis, among other things。 I always love the supernatural abilities in Jennifer’s books because the characters always use them in some very interesting ways。And of course, the other thing that Jennifer Estep is amazing at is writing incredible action sequences! There was a scene that took place on a magma planet and omg, the place was hardcore! It was amazing and I loved every second of it! The climax was also great, and I liked where the final fight took place because everything just came full circle。 Also, for not being a fighter, Vesper was pretty amazing in that fight! Like I said, she’s smart, especially when it came to using her abilities。So as you can see, I obviously loved this book 😆 I liked the characters and their powers and the dual POV where we switched from Vesper to Kyrion。 The story was intriguing, the slow burn romance was great, and the action was amazing as always。 The mix of sci-fi and fantasy was interesting and I really enjoyed it! It was just a great book all around and I really hope we get to see more books in this series。 。。。more

Sci-fi meets fantasy。 There’s a war between the Imperium and the Techware。 Only Bad Options is the first installment of the Galactic Truebond series。 Its characters possess abilities known as psions。 Psions give these characters abilities (e。g。, telekinesis, telepathy, telempathy, seer, siphon, spelltech, etcetera)。 Only Bad Options is being told from Vesper and Kyrion’s POV。Vesper Quill is just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers (which I love) and other household appliances in the R&D l Sci-fi meets fantasy。 There’s a war between the Imperium and the Techware。 Only Bad Options is the first installment of the Galactic Truebond series。 Its characters possess abilities known as psions。 Psions give these characters abilities (e。g。, telekinesis, telepathy, telempathy, seer, siphon, spelltech, etcetera)。 Only Bad Options is being told from Vesper and Kyrion’s POV。Vesper Quill is just a lowly lab rat who designs brewmakers (which I love) and other household appliances in the R&D lab at Kent Corp。 She's a seer with a photographic memory, so when she discovers a design flaw and a safety hazard in the new line of Kent Corp starcruisers, she pays the ultimate price of getting eliminated。 Just when things couldn't get worse, she meets Kyrion Caldaren, leader of Arrows, who strikes fear in people's hearts across the Archipelago Galaxy。 Kyrion insists that the two have a connection that could lead to their death。Only Bad Options is plot driven with romance as its subplot。 The pew-pew action? Intense。 The chemistry between Kyrion and Vesper? I LOVE IT。 Vesper and Kyrion each have a history that has shaped them into who they are。 They both WANT that connection because they’ve been so alone for so long, but as I mentioned, the romance is a subplot, so of course, Vesper and Kyrion kept stamping on my poor heart。 I feel for both of them, for what they’ve both been through。 Vesper’s mother is a POS。 Lord Callus Holloway is a LEECH。 Overall, I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone that likes sci-fi mixed with fantasy and soul mates。 I’m not sure if I would categorize them as enemies to lovers since Vesper and Kyrion weren’t enemies, to begin with。 They just didn’t like each other but were forced to work together thanks to an arcane, unwanted quirk of psionic magic。 I wish we saw more of Tivona Winslow because I liked her character, and Daichi because tipsy Daichi is funny。 I'm hoping we see more of them in the following sequels。 Only Bad Options left me with many questions, and I cannot wait for book two because I just needed more。 。。。more

This was a super fun book! I really enjoyed all the characters and storyline and the worldbuilding was nicely detailed and paced。 There’s a lot happening throughout the story to hold interest and make it an exciting read。 And we even get some “pew, pew, pew’s!!” I loved it!

Minor spoilers。。。(possible trigger warnings: there are some violent scenes- war/ fighting/ death)。This was such a cool space opera! It hooked me right in, starting with Vespers' POV。 She's such an intriguing character what with the layers upon layers of what makes her tick the way she does。 Kyrion was a harder sell for me, but I still grew to like him, and by the end, loved his character。 A lot happens in this book, the plot moved along nicely。 The world building was well enough to satisfy me, t Minor spoilers。。。(possible trigger warnings: there are some violent scenes- war/ fighting/ death)。This was such a cool space opera! I wish secondary characters were a bit more fleshed out, like Vesper's roommate, Kyrion's head of staff, and Asterin- this character has so much potential。 And I was hoping for some romance (even a little), but at least this installment is just sci-fi/ action。 Hopefully I get my wish in the next book :) For some reason, I thought this was a standalone, so I was dismayed when I neared the end and realized that not all the plot points would be resolved in this book :( I have so many questions for the author。 Anyways, I'm hooked and need the next one stat! 。。。more
