Summary

A new novel in the beloved New York Times bestselling Longmire series。 Picking up where Daughter of the Morning Star left off, the next Longmire novel finds the sheriff digging further into the mysteries of the wandering without--a mythical all-knowing spiritual being that devours souls。 Walt thinks he might find the answers he's looking for among the ruins of an old Native American boarding school--an institution designed to strip Native children of their heritage。 He has been haunted by the image of the Fort Pratt Industrial Indian Training School ever since he first saw a faded postcard picturing a hundred boys in uniform, in front of a large, ominous building--a postcard that was given to him by Jimmy Lane, the father of Jeanie One Moon。 After Walt's initial investigation into Jeanie's disappearance yielded no satisfying conclusions, Walt has to confront the fact that he may be dealing with an adversary unlike any he has ever faced before。

This book is very different。 Totally captivated me。 The journey to the past interwoven with the present is masterfully done。

A little disappointedI love the Longmire mysteries this book was kind of hard to read because of the complexity at the beginning。 I am glad that the complicated and complex storyline was rectified。 Honestly I would have to rank this as my second least favorite of the Longmire series。

By Saying that I did not like the last two Longmire books, does not mean that I really did not like them。 It means that I did not like them near as much as I enjoyed the previous 16。 this is a continuation of the Daughter of the Morning Star。 Lots of action, but not the typical Longmire with all of the wisecracks and all of the other characters。I hope that the mythical all-knowing spiritual being that devours souls is gone and the Sheriff comes back to Absaroka County Wyoming returns to solve cr By Saying that I did not like the last two Longmire books, does not mean that I really did not like them。 It means that I did not like them near as much as I enjoyed the previous 16。 this is a continuation of the Daughter of the Morning Star。 Lots of action, but not the typical Longmire with all of the wisecracks and all of the other characters。I hope that the mythical all-knowing spiritual being that devours souls is gone and the Sheriff comes back to Absaroka County Wyoming returns to solve crimes。 。。。more

Kudos for Johnson for trying something new but people (like me) who just want a good old mystery featuring Walt and the gang will probably be left wanting a do over。 Johnson describes this book as a gothic romance mystery。 But most of it was played out in his mind which I found very unsatisfying。Definitely not one of my favorites。

An excellent follow up to the previous novel, Daughter of the Morning Star。 A tale that is both supernatural and thought provokingAn interesting and thought provoking follow up novel。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Interesting twist - a ghost story of sorts。 More important than usual to have read and remembered the previous one (which I had) to understand what’s going on。 Craig Johnson never writes a bad book and I enjoyed this one despite its mystical qualities。 Always been a big fan of Virgil White Buffalo。

I absolutely LOVED this book! It showed a different side and it was mind blowing。 I cant wait for the next Walt Longmire book。。

I am not a fan of supernatural stories。 I am a big fan of the Longmire books, but, in my opinion, this is not one of the best。 I had to struggle to finish it。

Craig Johnson digs deep into Walt Longmire’s past to bring the reader face to face with Walt’s nemeses from past books and reveals a place in between, Fort Pratt, a town of Walt’s dead, where fiction meets science fiction with a western gothic romance twinge and a bit of horror on the side。Without reading the previous seventeen books in the series, a first-time reader will get lost and not truly appreciate the depth of the narrative。 Long-time readers are reminded of Walt’s history with Martha t Craig Johnson digs deep into Walt Longmire’s past to bring the reader face to face with Walt’s nemeses from past books and reveals a place in between, Fort Pratt, a town of Walt’s dead, where fiction meets science fiction with a western gothic romance twinge and a bit of horror on the side。Without reading the previous seventeen books in the series, a first-time reader will get lost and not truly appreciate the depth of the narrative。 Long-time readers are reminded of Walt’s history with Martha to Mallow Cups to Bidarte, and all the others along the way。 As the book states, all haunting is regret, and Walt’s grief is waiting for him in a small Montana town。 Walt will continue to face his burdens, and will continue to do so, even if it means an endless cycle of knowing The Wandering Without is just around the next corner。This turned out to be one of my favorite books in the series。 It’s not the typical police procedural that Craig Johnson is known for, but from time to time, it’s good to shake things up a bit。 。。。more

Although I always respect an author taking a different road, introducing new characters into a series, or trying a strange POV; however, after a couple of dozen installments, I have to give this one just an “OK” rating。 I love Walt, but this one was hard to follow, and this book may be the nadir of the entire series。 At the end, everyone was wondering whether the Sheriff should consider retirement? Not a good sign。

Too Confusing ReadNot my favorite too confusing。 Did not the like the parts about the Indian children taken from their parents and forcefully placed in a white school。 Had trouble following the Authors train of thought or lack of。

If you like Longmire stories, you might like this one。 Whenever I can't wait for a story to end, I know I know it was not for me。 Everything from the title to the ending was preposterous。 I do like stories that involve "magical realism," this one did not work for me。 There's a bit of obsession with guns too and what's with the adjective, "tactical"? There were tactical guns, gloves, boots, everything。 I was expecting to hear about tactical underwear。 If you like Longmire stories, you might like this one。 Whenever I can't wait for a story to end, I know I know it was not for me。 Everything from the title to the ending was preposterous。 I do like stories that involve "magical realism," this one did not work for me。 There's a bit of obsession with guns too and what's with the adjective, "tactical"? This is a hard book to review and I am still not sure what to think about it。 The author even warns us in his forward that this book was going to be different。 There has always been some mysticism in the Walt Longmire books, but this book takes it to a whole other level。 There is time travel and ghosts in this book and while I was reading it I was at first wondering what was going on。 While it is interesting to see writers try something new I am hoping that the author goes back to his normal sty This is a hard book to review and I am still not sure what to think about it。 The author even warns us in his forward that this book was going to be different。 There has always been some mysticism in the Walt Longmire books, but this book takes it to a whole other level。 There is time travel and ghosts in this book and while I was reading it I was at first wondering what was going on。 While it is interesting to see writers try something new I am hoping that the author goes back to his normal style of writing for the next Walt Longmire book。 。。。more

worse Longmire book ever。 I loved every book and the series on TV, but this book was awful。 Didn’t appeal to me and will not get reread。 Sorry Mr。 Johnson。

DifferentInteresting enough to read, but a bit disjointed。 And predictable ending。 Not the best Craig Johnson。 This book is only for people who have Walt Longmire series

Too metaphysical。 I have read all the Long mire books, but this one was a turnoff。 Why, when heHas created such wonderful characters, Mr。 Johnson has to resort to phantasmagoria, I cannot fathom。 If this Continues I will likely be done with them。

Mr。 Johnson takes Walt to the twilight Zone!Walt is working on so many levels (layers) in this story, you need a program to keep up with the cast of characters! This is a confusing read, but intriguing。 You want to finish as fast as possible so you know how it ends, and whether Walt got out! All the usual characters are involved, but not together! I remember way back in the sixties when we’d sit in theaters watching foreign films like “Last Year at Marienbad” and pretend they were cool even though we couldn’t make heads or tails of them。 I am much older now and don’t pretend anymore: Craig Johnson’s “Hell and Back” is just about unbearable, one amorphous dreamscape episode after another。 I read it to the end only because I don’t review books I haven’t finished—and the ending, as it turns out, is pretty good。 But there’s only enough materi I remember way back in the sixties when we’d sit in theaters watching foreign films like “Last Year at Marienbad” and pretend they were cool even though we couldn’t make heads or tails of them。 I am much older now and don’t pretend anymore: Craig Johnson’s “Hell and Back” is just about unbearable, one amorphous dreamscape episode after another。 I read it to the end only because I don’t review books I haven’t finished—and the ending, as it turns out, is pretty good。 But there’s only enough material in these pages for a short story。 And, yes, I've read all the other books in the Longmire series。 Can’t blame an author for trying something different; can’t blame readers for not liking it。 。。。more

Mr Johnson, sorry but this series needs to come to an end if this is what is left。 Otherwise, I would encourage you to stick to the basics that made you and this series successful。 I have read all the other books, and they used to be good。 Lately the stories have been either over-the-top unbelievable or just odd。 Please go back to the basics。 Humor。 Fun。 Case solving。 Those three things are all we need。

Best Long mire yet!Loved it。might be a bit too mystical for some, but I enjoyed revisiting old characters。 And there's more to be told so I am excited for the next。 Best Long mire yet!Loved it。might be a bit too mystical for some, but I enjoyed revisiting old characters。 And there's more to be told so I am excited for the next。 。。。more

I've read all of the Longmire series and this one was very weak。 It takes Craig Johnson a year to finish a book and this is what he comes up with! Maybe it's time that Longmire and Craig Johnson retire。 Quite disappointed in this book compared to many of the others which were really good。 I've read all of the Longmire series and this one was very weak。 It takes Craig Johnson a year to finish a book and this is what he comes up with! Walt is in another world and has no idea how he got there, how long he's been there, or how to leave。 In the mean time, Henry and Vic are frantically looking for Walt。 He's gone missing and they don't know where。 Lot's of history and mysticism in this book。 Another wonderful journey with Walt and friends。 Walt is in another world and has no idea how he got there, how long he's been there, or how to leave。 In the mean time, Henry and Vic are frantically looking for Walt。 He's gone missing and they don't know where。 Lot's of history and mysticism in this book。 Another wonderful journey with Walt and friends。 。。。more

Confused by the switching timelines。 Hope the author goes back to his normal writing style next so I can return to full appreciation of the regular characters。

Mac and Cheese Love the series, Walt, and Indigenous Peoples with tribal focus。 But this jumpy time traveling woohoo storyline was hard to follow。

Not what I was expecting from a Longmire bookSpent hours I'll never get back on a genre I wasn't expecting。 I'm not a big fan of fantasy and this is certainly that。 As all of Johnson's books are, this is well crafted, which is why I didn't abandon it。 If you don't mind fantasy, enjoy。 Not what I was expecting from a Longmire bookSpent hours I'll never get back on a genre I wasn't expecting。 I'm not a big fan of fantasy and this is certainly that。 As all of Johnson's books are, this is well crafted, which is why I didn't abandon it。 If you don't mind fantasy, enjoy。 。。。more
