Summary

Toughness has long been held as a fundamental key to achieving peak performance。 For generations, we've been taught toughness means bulldozing through—pushing to the point of breakdown—and that showing any sign of weakness is failure。 This model of toughness has long been glorified and celebrated。 But the truth is, it doesn't work。

Steve Magness, a performance scientist who coaches Olympic athletes, now offers a new kind of toughness—real toughness—that can help anyone navigate adversity and challenge。 Grounded in the latest sports science and psychology, real toughness is about paying attention to your physiological, emotional, and psychological responses (from pain to anger) and working with them to overcome a challenge。 Real toughness works with our biology and psychology; fake toughness fights against them。

Real toughness is based on four core pillars which cultivate genuine inner strength:

Pillar 1—Ditch the Façade, Embrace Reality
Pillar 2—Listen to Your Body
Pillar 3—Respond, Instead of React
Pillar 4—Transcend Discomfort

Like Endure and The Talent CodeReal Toughness flips the script on what it means to be tough, pointing to new research that shows how our understanding of resilience—one that ignores discomfort—is wrong。 Magness draws from mindfulness, military case studies, sports psychology, neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy to show how real toughness makes us more successful, happier, and better people。

Well-written。 Data conclusions based on is very old。 Doesn't incorporate modern psychology research or modifications of past understandings due to reproducibility crisis。Can't recommend this book。Instead try something from Jocko Willink, Angela Duckworth or Willian Deci。 Well-written。 Data conclusions based on is very old。 Doesn't incorporate modern psychology research or modifications of past understandings due to reproducibility crisis。Can't recommend this book。Instead try something from Jocko Willink, Angela Duckworth or Willian Deci。 。。。more

I started off this book thinking it was a meh 3 but around Chapter 5 it woke me up and went strong from there on in to the end。 A great book if you are interested in human behaviour and how to influence it for people’s betterment。

Nothing could be further from toughness than external bravado。 This book is a map to use on the journey to high performance in every aspect of life。 Today, star coaches are using some or all of the approaches outlined here to create the environment for their athlete to grow their performance。I've put one of many maximes of toughness suggested by the author to my moodboard to enjoy my full strength, from seeing an obstacle as a challenge to developing a growth mindset。 Nothing could be further from toughness than external bravado。 This book is a map to use on the journey to high performance in every aspect of life。 Today, star coaches are using some or all of the approaches outlined here to create the environment for their athlete to grow their performance。I've put one of many maximes of toughness suggested by the author to my moodboard to enjoy my full strength, from seeing an obstacle as a challenge to developing a growth mindset。 。。。more

Do Hard Things⭕#Reading#Bibliophile#Bookstagram#CurrentRead#BookReview#Bøger 。。。more

Steve’s work is so well researched with great stories to go along with the topics in his books。 This is one of my favorite books by Steve yet! Highly recommend。

This book does a great job of using science, research, and anecdotes to provide a counterargument to the prevailing theory of toughness。 It is a really important and encouraging read for anyone who is trying to become tougher themselves or lead other people。 I'd recommend it! Some really interesting and applicable advice for both sport and parenting。

I think its reasonably well laid out, the framework of my meditation means the thoughtfulness has been good。 A little tooooo much anecdotal stuff BUT it does seem to echo lots of other sources I've kept up with over the last 4 years。 I think its reasonably well laid out, the framework of my meditation means the thoughtfulness has been good。 A little tooooo much anecdotal stuff BUT it does seem to echo lots of other sources I've kept up with over the last 4 years。 。。。more

Steve challenges the conventional definition of toughness。 He shows how we have wrongly derived resilience from tough coaches, tough parents, tough guys and even the military。He defines real toughness as "experiencing discomfort or distress, leaning in, paying attention, and creating space to take thoughtful action。 It’s navigating discomfort to make the best decision you can。"He breaks this down and details 4 pillars of toughness: 1。 Ditch the Facade, Embrace Reality- Accept What You Are Capabl Steve challenges the conventional definition of toughness。 He shows how we have wrongly derived resilience from tough coaches, tough parents, tough guys and even the military。He defines real toughness as "experiencing discomfort or distress, leaning in, paying attention, and creating space to take thoughtful action。 It’s navigating discomfort to make the best decision you can。"He breaks this down and details 4 pillars of toughness: 1。 Ditch the Facade, Embrace Reality- Accept What You Are Capable Of- True Confidence Is Quiet; Insecurity Is Loud- Know When to Hold ’Em and When to Fold ’Em2。 Listen to Your Body- Your Emotions Are Messengers, Not Dictators- Own the Voice in Your Head3。 Respond Instead of React- Keep Your Mind Steady- Turn the Dial So You Don’t Spiral4。 Transcend Discomfort- Build the Foundation to Do Hard Things- Find Meaning in Discomfort 。。。more

A good set of reminders and principles。 Nothing revolutionary in here for me but I read a lot of these kinds of books and listen to even more podcasts so ymmv

Excellent book that makes you really reflect and learn about having true mental toughness。 So many great stories to bring home the points in the book。 The last section of the book: Transcend Discomfort is so well written。 I will be returning to this book again as I continue to work on my mental toughness journey!

Read this book, then read it again。 This’ll be the easy part。 Then change some of your thinking。 That the hard thing。 The era of the ‘tough-guy’ is over in all the ways that count。 I’d argue today is the era of ‘the-human-with-grit’。 Grit I respect。 Enduring the grind, figuring out how to escape the grind, and doing the hard things along the path without bragging or complaining about any of it。 To me, that’s grit。

The sheer amount of info the book offers ultimately made it worth the while with some nuggets to carry with me and help coach others。 Magness leans on a plethora of sports examples and anecdotes that connect the easiest to toughness, yet I had hoped for more of the less predictable forms of toughness in other walks of life。 Magness uses a lot of social science research that gives his arguments merit, but often you feel like you might be reading a study。 By the end of the day, Magness makes a per The sheer amount of info the book offers ultimately made it worth the while with some nuggets to carry with me and help coach others。 Magness leans on a plethora of sports examples and anecdotes that connect the easiest to toughness, yet I had hoped for more of the less predictable forms of toughness in other walks of life。 Magness uses a lot of social science research that gives his arguments merit, but often you feel like you might be reading a study。 By the end of the day, Magness makes a persuasive case, and I found material that could help others。 。。。more

Real Toughness has less to do with Bobbie Knight and Vince Lombardi and more to do with Embracing Reality, Listening to your Body, Responding instead of Reacting and Transcending Discomfort。 there were many counter-intuitive aspects to the book and I really enjoyed it。 His mix of real stories with some of the science that supports his model was compelling。

Ryan Odom

I found a lot of good insight into “toughness” that I found valuable。 Some I did not know。 Some I did, but it was encouraging to hear the “why” behind what I knew。 This was especially encouraging when it was backed my scientific studies。 The writing was mostly good although I found sometimes it just droned with, what felt like, the same ideas told differently。

Probably 2。5 stars。 One of those books that you read and quickly forget。 It’s not that there aren’t interesting ideas or good stories。 It just wasn’t that memorable。 Could be half as long。 Understand who you are and your capacity, bravado won’t save you, be in the moment, learn to grind, root you effort in larger meaning。

This is an important and useful book, but it trails off at the end a bit。 Magness makes his points well, but it ends with a "meh, ok" and not a "BAM! Here's my point!" That really doesn't discount the great info in here, but it makes for an odd reading experience。 But, whatever, the important aspects of this book are well executed -- his points are supported by excellent research from legitimate journals, etc。 -- and his arguments about real toughness are useful。 This would be good reading for a This is an important and useful book, but it trails off at the end a bit。 Magness makes his points well, but it ends with a "meh, ok" and not a "BAM! A fantastic overview on what healthy resilience looks like and how to nurture it。 This books balances narrative, science, and practical tips well; and organizes components of toughness into four pillars that make rethinking the concept of toughness easy。 I think this is a must read; use it for yourself or the others you guide in your life。
