Summary

When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature arrives to demand retribution。 Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not truly a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled her world。

At least, he’s not a beast all the time。

As she adapts to her new home, her feelings for the faerie, Tamlin, transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie she’s been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae。 But something is not right in the faerie lands。 An ancient, wicked shadow is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it, or doom Tamlin—and his world—forever。

From bestselling author Sarah J。 Maas comes a seductive, breathtaking book that blends romance, adventure, and faerie lore into an unforgettable read。

Just wanted to give fair warning to anyone who can’t get into this book in the beginning。 It took me 4/5 chapters before I really enjoyed it and a few more to be totally sucked in。 All in all a great story, just hold out! Excited to start the next book, now I can’t put them down!

Wow。Firstly, I’d like to say that I contemplated reading this book for weeks before I finally decided I’d give it a go。 The reason for that alone was because I saw many videos, many reviews, claiming that the first half of the book was super hard to get through。 People repeatedly said just stick through it and it’ll end up being really good, and obviously I didn’t think it’d be something I’d like。 I was convinced that I wouldn’t be able to get attached to it, it’d be boring in the beginning and Wow。Firstly, I’d like to say that I contemplated reading this book for weeks before I finally decided I’d give it a go。 The reason for that alone was because I saw many videos, many reviews, claiming that the first half of the book was super hard to get through。 People repeatedly said just stick through it and it’ll end up being really good, and obviously I didn’t think it’d be something I’d like。 I was convinced that I wouldn’t be able to get attached to it, it’d be boring in the beginning and therefore, there’s no way I could get through till the end。Oh how wrong I was。 Here is a message to anyone contemplating picking this book up。 Do it。 I loved it - I loved it from beginning right through to the end and I’m extremely excited to read the rest of the series。 The first half wasn’t difficult to get through at all。 Every page was magical and I whizzed through the chapters with a smile on my face, wondering how on earth some people struggled with the beginning。 I think the writing truly is beautiful, the characters I’ve already fallen in love with and although it took quite a few chapters for me to realise where the plot was going, all of the twists and revelations kept all of it interesting。 I can only imagine what the rest of the series is going to be like。 。。。more

Guys, idk if I should be mad or disappointed or just let it roll and move on with my life。 So many of you flooded my DMs telling me I needed to read it… just do it! When I very first started this I was like what in the childish weird crap is this。 It almost was too fantasy for my liking。 But, I pushed through and kept an open mind。 After a little bit of research it appears that SJM uses old stories as a loose basis/inspo for her plotlines。 These include old fairy tales, the Book of Exodus, Greek Guys, idk if I should be mad or disappointed or just let it roll and move on with my life。 So many of you flooded my DMs telling me I needed to read it… just do it! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Again, SJM hits us with the crazy age gap and it's supposed to be forgiven bc all the characters are hot。 That being said, I really liked this book。I liked Tamlin until he just sat there Under the Mountain as Amarantha tortured Feyre。 Then was like 'oh sh*t girly, you're gonna die。 Here's a smooch so you remember I'm still here。' I hope Feyre kicks him to the curb Again, SJM hits us with the crazy age gap and it's supposed to be forgiven bc all the characters are hot。 That being said, I really liked this book。I liked Tamlin until he just sat there Under the Mountain as Amarantha tortured Feyre。 Then was like 'oh sh*t girly, you're gonna die。 Here's a smooch so you remember I'm still here。' I hope Feyre kicks him to the curb 。。。more

3。5。 Interesting twist on Beauty and the Beast, but trying to decide if I want to read more of this series since fantasy is not usually my jam。

I really tried to like this book after it was recommended by several people, however I had to give up about half way through。 I found the characters annoying and the story just seemed to be rambling on without getting anywhere。

Im in a state of shock。 Can’t believe the amount of bad reviews this book has had! Yes it’s a very slow one but the last 150 pages in my opinion made it all worthwhile。 I need a few days to recover then onto ACOMAF for meeee

A satisfying fairy tale fantasy that delivers on world building, A Court of Thorns and Roses was a fun read that kept my attention from cover to cover。 Feyre and her family are starving when she fells a wolf in the woods, selling its pelt to earn enough for her family's temporary survival。 Days later, however, a fae named Tamlin tells her she has broken an ancient treaty and killed one of his guard, so she must live with him forever as restitution in the fae land of Prythian。 The book feels like A satisfying fairy tale fantasy that delivers on world building, A Court of Thorns and Roses was a fun read that kept my attention from cover to cover。 Feyre and her family are starving when she fells a wolf in the woods, selling its pelt to earn enough for her family's temporary survival。 Days later, however, a fae named Tamlin tells her she has broken an ancient treaty and killed one of his guard, so she must live with him forever as restitution in the fae land of Prythian。 The book feels like a modern retelling of "Beauty and the Beast," but with some role reversals, a much more capable main character, and fae politics at the center of the action。 Feyre is a consistent rebellious heroine and refuses to submit to orders and the good girl role to the final page of the book。 Tamlin is brooding and tight lipped about the kingdom's magic in an Edward Cullen kind of way that seems to be the standard for YA now。 The reveals weren't shocking, and the exposition is heavy handed, but the book succeeds at creating a lush world of fae and mortals and their struggles that was very compelling。 Thoroughly enjoyable。 。。。more

I had expected fantasy and great worldbuilding and stuff。There was no graphic smut which was actually a surprise, but I honestly think I would’ve preferred it to the annoying metaphors of being consumed by fire。 And the three times there were scenes, they were all the same! It was predatory and primal and just really took all the things I like about those scenes out so eh。There were faeries and I did enjoy learning about all that stuff cos I haven’t read TOO much of this genre of magic and faeries and stuff, but I’ve read enough to know that this wasn’t that original。 The High Fae aren’t really that extraordinary and interesting beings - they’re just humans but with weird ears, long fingers and their own personal superpowers。 The less powerful faeries were more interesting tho and I really like the idea of the seasonal courts, the night court and dawn court and whatnot。 But YMMV。(Another book Lynette has read。 Another host of things she’s stolen from other authors…)It wasn’t nearly as vibey as I was expecting。 I put this book on my tbr cos I’d just rewatched Beauty and the Beast and wanted a retelling。 And the vibes in B&B are SO MUCH MORE vibey than the vibes of ACOTAR!However, the setting were quite nice… *sometimes*。 Examples such as a pool made of starlight, or tall grass with will o’ the wisps, or the hallways under the mountain, they were all great。 But then - I DON’T KNOW WHY - SJM just didn’t give us such great imagery with the ACTUAL mansion/castle place that mc lived in for half of the book, or the actual under the mountain place that she was in for a third of the book。 SJM explained the bare bones of those places and I wished she would have embraced the vibe of the places and really… not so much explained everything in great great detail, but have mc interact a bit more with her surroundings, have her notice them a bit more。Characters。Feyre (pronounced Fay-ruh)Hm。 I feel SJM bent her character to suit the plot。 She was ruthless at the beginning cos she needs to provide for her family… but she also hates her family because they make her do everything for them… but she does it anyway because of a promise she made to her dead mum… whom she also hates。 And then when she leaves her family… she is suddenly making it the purpose of her life to make sure her family is safe and cared for and everything… even though- yeah。 That’s one example。 Sometimes she’s our classic, ‘ain’t nobody gonna mess with me’ ‘Imma stand up for myself’ ‘all the guys can go to hell’ badass… and then other times she’s just going to let all these guys rape her (COMING BACK TO *THIS* LATER), be angry about it for a single confrontation, and then ignore the unclassified abuse so she can fall in love- it doesn’t make any sense。 Feyre doesn’t really have that much of a constant character。The main thing I did notice about her character that I did like was her painting。 This mc had a hobby! Which I appreciated, because it made her more of a person and less of a pawn in SJM’s plot (even if that was what she was)。 But see, even here, she kinda stopped painting and noticing beauty of colour and light and stuff just to add the impact of some horrible things but it doesn’t really make sense。Also, this book was written from Feyre’s p。o。v, but I reckon it would actually be better if it was written in third person, because Feyre’s thoughts felt EXTREMELY forced for plot, and it would’ve been better if we were simply told that ‘she came to this conclusion and so did this’ rather than us watch painfully as SJM forces Feyre to think along this preordained path to reach the conclusion that she should do this to serve the book and plot and stuff。 Also, if it was written in third person, we would’ve gotten more of the setting and other characters movements, motives and the clearer plot WHICH WOULD’VE BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL (reasons I’ll come back to later)。Tamlin。 The love interest。 Sssiiiiigghhhhh。 Another inconsistent character。 SJM tried to make him the beast, especially at the beginning but it VERY quickly faded off。 He’s not a beast。 He wears a maskOH NO THE HORROR! HOW COULD FEYRE EVER LOVE HIM WITH HER SHALLOW HUMAN HEART *dramatic faint* Eheh- yeah nah。 I don’t even know what to say about this guy, I have absolutely no attachment to him whatsoever。 He had POTENTIAL to be so much but he really had no personality。 He didn’t tease or laugh or anything。 He just kinda said to Feyre, do whatever you want。 And then - ONCE - he took her to a place, and once he showed her the gallery in his house。 And then once they’d apparently fallen in love, he just murmured compliments and things into her hair and stuff as if that would make him more interesting。 But, y’know, his character totally makes sense even more when he has anger issues and yells at people and keeps secrets, and lies to people and, oh let’s not forget when he was full of lusty magic (of which, considering the whole curse reveal four fifths way through the book, doesn’t make any sense at all) and decided to BITE Feyre and was all ‘grrrr I’m a monster and I want you so animalistically (shut up, it has letters, it’s a word) that I will sexually abuse you and all that and it will be your fault because we told you to stay in your room’???And the whole last section he was just silent and boring and completely unnecessary。 Lucien。This guy。 This guy wasn’t bad, you know? He could’ve been better, but he was ok。 His character made sense。 He had cool eyes and cool hair and stuff。 He actually had conversations with Feyre and was that perfect mix of helping Feyre and knowing Feyre can take care of herself。 You know what? I reckon Feyre and Lucien made more sense than Feyre and Tamlin。 And that’s saying a lot because Feyre and Lucien together make very very little sense。 They both kind of have a mutual respect and protection and liking for each other in consequence of externalities which I appreciate。But, Lucien has a super superfluous backstory。 If it comes in handy in the rest of the series, it should’ve just been put in later。Rhysand。 Personally, I think Rye-sand sounds cooler than ree-sand but whatever。 This guy was a better character。 Not a better person I don’t think but a better character。I would’ve LOVED his teasing, his games, his motives, his personality, his responsibilities and EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GUY except。 For one。 Thing。 It is only one thing so it makes it a bit of a shame that I can’t fully like Rhysand as a character yet because of it。 I would’ve shipped Rhysand and Feyre SO GOSHDARNIT HARD, if it wasn’t for this one thing。 I would’ve enjoyed Feyre and Tamlin’s romance so much more if it wasn’t for this one thing。 I would’ve enjoyed this book so much more and loved it so much if it wasn’t for this one thing。 It shouldn’t matter to me so much because these are fictional characters doing fictional things in fictional universes in a fictional book so it SHOULDN’T MATTER。 But, just because something was fictional has never made it not matter to me before。 The thing I’m confused about myself though, is that… I can read and- not so much support cruelty and villainy, but justify it because of how it makes a character。 Cannibalism and torture and whatnot。 But- doesn’t rape and abuse fall into the same categories of what makes a villain? So why does it seem such an unacceptable characteristic, when other horrible things are allowed? Because it’s too close to the truth, I think。 Because they’re not doing fictional things。 Because even if these acts were completely made up… SJM didn’t classify it as horrible。 She said it made Feyre uncomfortable, that Feyre fought against the males, but THEN SJM romanticised it of all things。 She said Feyre might have enjoyed it were she not so uncomfortable, she said that Feyre was filled with her own desire even if she was squirming。 She made Feyre justify Rhys’ actions even when she washed her mouth out three times after the fact。 She made Feyre describe Rhys’ lips as sensual, his voice as a lover’s purr, his whispers as erotic。 Which would be fine, sure, but she does this as if the rape and sexual abuse which Feyre had physically and verbally tried to push off and reject… were something that Feyre could then fall in love with, or at least assist her in lusting after Rhys and Tamlin。 There’s something so wrong with that。The fact that Feyre just LET it happen to her basically。 The fact that SJM just pulled the literal magic card and gave so many excuses to why it was ok, so many defences for the attackers and as soon as she had milked the situation dry for her plot she completely ignored the incident simply because it had no use for her anymore。And, another incongruity of Feyre’s character。 She will *look forward* to when she can be *objectified* and *owned*, Rhys’ personal plaything as he drugged her and made her dance for him and crude, vulgar outfits and she would look forward to it because she wouldn’t even know what she was doing and she would essentially escape her life for a night。 She’d lose herself, give up her dignity, one of the last shreds of herself she had left and she gave it up。 But when it came to the deciding act… she’s all, ‘oh, it’s so hard to kill these faeries (I know where Lynette got her final trial of Vardaesia from) and I can’t say I don’t love him because it’s all I have left of myself。’She’ll wilfully give away her dignity and her body but fight so hard for her innocence? It doesn’t make any sense。And I won’t even touch on the masochism, the sadism, the objectification- because it makes me a bit upset to think that I might’ve actually enjoyed the lusty romance of this… IF THAT WAS ALL IT WAS! I might’ve actually enjoyed the lusty romance of this… if it was ✨true love✨。 But it wasn’t… because the only way Feyre would want Tamlin or Rhys, would be purely because they forced themselves onto her first。 Which is the worst motive imaginable FOR A ROMANCE BOOK!In。 Ex。 Hale。 Hale。Ok。What else?Oh! Villain! Ok! I won’t give much away cos spoilies。 This villain was so basic。 Another SUPER superfluous backstory (our usual ‘your species hurt something dear to me so now I vow to hate your species forever’) they were boring in their classic teasing and ‘oh that scream is music to my ears’ or ‘aw。 I thought we were having fun!’ Kind of basic sadism。 Forgettable and unimaginative。Pace。 Pace was good。 The first half was kind of… if I was in a slump or had better things to do I would’ve been loathe to pick it back up because there were so many words! And so little content! Most of what was said in the first half could’ve been saturated into the necessities。 I feel like some parts of this book were so bloated with forced plot and information when other parts had been spread thin with fillers? I needed to like- get a rolling pin and roll it over this story so all the important bits were told at the beginning so we could understand what was happening as it happened, not in hindsight when everything was revealed one fact after the other in timing so convenient and eye-roll worthy。But it definitely picked up and I really enjoyed it then, it wasn’t a chore at all and it wouldn’t have been so, had the plot drivers been spread out more evenly and the fillers been told rather than shown。Plot。 Hmmm。 It was pretty much just basic plot all prettied up。 Ooh a war and a rebellion and a murder and a curse that only gets broken when dot dot dot。 :/ I had no idea why SJM was telling us any of the stuff in the first half of the book until the end。 (Which was what Lynette tried to do in Whisper sigh。 But at least here SJM didn’t shove it all in the last seven pages)。 And can I just say… that riddle is so bad and cheesy 😂 Umm anything else? I doooon’t think so? I would’ve really liked this book if it was written in third person and therefore readers were told the base plot earlier on, characters were straightened out a bit, the romance was instigated by something a little more dignified and swoon worthy than sexual abuse and if those were done I wouldn’t have minded so much the plot being activated by forced thoughts。Oh! One more thing, there was one bit where we had like a full on thirty pages or sm of nothing just to prove that Tamlin loved Feyre。 Why indeed。 It was so forced and unnecessary and contrary to Tamlin and Feyre’s characters。 But that’s not exactly news。Anyway! I did enjoy this book - regardless of how much more I might’ve enjoyed it had some things been altered - and I’m definitely gonna read the next one。 Thank you so much, Hayley, for the lend! I’ll give them back soon I swear! 。。。more

The first TWO THIRDS were boring。 This is my daughter’s favorite book and every time I said I wasn’t going to read it anymore she would cry til I agreed to continue。 The last third was more readable and entertaining, but that’s not enough to make up for slogging through most of it。2。5 stars。 Daughter said she will cry if I don’t read the second book so I suppose I’ll read it。 The things we do for our children!!!
