Summary

The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil…

New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed。 Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan。 Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate。

Unfortunately, they didn’t get away fast enough。 Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt。 Eve Dallas looks over the scene。

Mina’s expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex trafficking—and that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits。 Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the city’s ultra-rich。 But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control。 No matter what, she must keep her head clear--because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent。

This is not one of those "filler" episodes of In Death, where we forget the plot as soon as we're done reading。 This is a straight up SVU two-parter, where the murder victim leads us to a huge human trafficking ring and an amnesiac witness who has to piece together what happened before more children are kidnapped and sold。 Pretty epic, actually。 I'd love to see a more intimate plot in the new installation, as it seems Robb needs to bring out bigger and bigger bads as this series nears 60 episode This is not one of those "filler" episodes of In Death, where we forget the plot as soon as we're done reading。 This is a straight up SVU two-parter, where the murder victim leads us to a huge human trafficking ring and an amnesiac witness who has to piece together what happened before more children are kidnapped and sold。 Pretty epic, actually。 I'd love to see a more intimate plot in the new installation, as it seems Robb needs to bring out bigger and bigger bads as this series nears 60 episodes, but she handles multiple villains just as well。I have a theory: the best In Death books are the ones with tension in Eve's life that is unrelated to her childhood。 The best of the best are the books where Eve and Roarke fight。 There is a nonzero amount of marital tension in this book that makes it more memorable than a lot of the recent books in the series。 。。。more

I think I am done with these series。 Last one worth reading was Shadows in Death。 So frustrating waiting all this time and read the book in 3h because I have to keep avoiding all the not important parts where the author keeps repeting the same argument as Eve passes the same information to the different characters。 The series have lost the edge specially in the personal relationships and seems like Robb just needs to tick the all so familar and repetitve scenes of the 55 books just to get throug I think I am done with these series。 Last one worth reading was Shadows in Death。 So frustrating waiting all this time and read the book in 3h because I have to keep avoiding all the not important parts where the author keeps repeting the same argument as Eve passes the same information to the different characters。 The series have lost the edge specially in the personal relationships and seems like Robb just needs to tick the all so familar and repetitve scenes of the 55 books just to get through: the cat and the bacon, check, the button in Roarke's pocket, the outfit of the day, the oh so nasty comment towards poor Summerset, the no so much steamy parts between Eve and R, Eve not understanding some basic idiom, her boot up Peabody's ass。。 There is not depth or character develpoment and they look more like a couple who have lived together for the almost 3 decades the series started than the 4 years the author paces the book。 The subject of this one was disturbing and too explicit but predictible and the technicalities of the police procedure long, repetitive and boring。 I enjoyed so much these series in the beggining and maybe specting the same level of quality from the author after 55 books is unrealistc。 I used to love the tension between Eve and Roarke, their chalenges as a couple, the emotional upheaval in books like New york to Dallas, innocent in death, memory in deth and so many more and the crimes were original, the action fast and held the story interesting in all aspects。 No more looking forward for the next installemt in these series。 I would rather reread the good ones。 Its like one of those tv series that are so good the producers keep adding seasons until they become so bad one stops watching it all together。 What a pity!! Eve and Roarke are possibly the best characters i loved to read about but there is nothing left of them lately。 If I want just a good thriller I would rather read John Le Carré, i read the In Death series solely because of the main couple but there is not a story to follow about them anymore, they are like a boring disappearing act。 。。。more

I'm a long time fan of the Lt Eve Dallas series and have really enjoyed (almost all of) them, so I was pleased to pick this one up。This is another good instalment - it deals with the disturbing subject of sex trafficking children and adults, the desperation of the title only too true for the victims。 Of course Eve has echoes of her own past coming up for her and Roarke to battle with, as she works to shut down the sex trafficking organisation and rescue as many of the victims as possible。 The ch I'm a long time fan of the Lt Eve Dallas series and have really enjoyed (almost all of) them, so I was pleased to pick this one up。This is another good instalment - it deals with the disturbing subject of sex trafficking children and adults, the desperation of the title only too true for the victims。 Of course Eve has echoes of her own past coming up for her and Roarke to battle with, as she works to shut down the sex trafficking organisation and rescue as many of the victims as possible。 The character development over the series shows here, with the evolving way the couple deal with this。The story moves at a pace and although you have peeks at what the bad guys are doing as the story progresses and can be sure Eve will bring them to account, JD Robb still hustles the reader along with her story and has them invested in Eve's work to get the victims found and the bad guys stopped。 And it was fun to see Nadine and Mavis and the others again, popping up in the story to play their parts。Looking forward to Eve's next case already! 。。。more

Desperation In Death by J。D。 Robb is the 55th book in her magnificent In Death/Eve Dallas series。 I have noted this many times that I love this series, as I have read every single book, as well as all the novellas of this series。 I also love Eve and Roarke, who I still consider the best literary couple。 Desperation in Death is another very good addition to this series。 I will never have enough of this series, and marvel how Robb continues to give us fascinating stories at 55 books later; though Desperation In Death by J。D。 Robb is the 55th book in her magnificent In Death/Eve Dallas series。 I have noted this many times that I love this series, as I have read every single book, as well as all the novellas of this series。 I also love Eve and Roarke, who I still consider the best literary couple。 Desperation in Death is another very good addition to this series。 I will never have enough of this series, and marvel how Robb continues to give us fascinating stories at 55 books later; though this book is one of the darker books in this series, with lots of twists and turns。Eve is called to a scene where a dead teenager is found; as she notices the clothes/undergarments on the dead girl, she begins to suspect that the girl was a victim of a sex trafficking organization。 Eve and Peabody begin a search of another missing teen, who was injured and ran away; they are determined to find the missing girl, before the villains find her。 As the case continues to get darker, it causes Eve to remember her own past, as she is mentally and emotionally distraught; with Roarke and Peabody trying to keep her calm。 We learn more about the missing girl, Dorian, and her now dead friend, Mina; as they escaped the “Pleasure Academy”, only to have Mina push Dorian to safety, bringing her own death。It was sad and dark, as we see how the young girls are being kidnapped at a young age, and forcefully trained to be a sex slave。 Eve pulls everyone together, including other departments to help find the so-called academy and Dorian。 Roarke, who we know, always helps Eve on her cases, and this is no different; but he is concerned how this case is affecting Eve。I always love to see all the many recurring characters, such as Peabody, Nadine, McNab, Mira, Mavis, Feeney, Reo, Summerset, Galahad, and Eve’s entire police team。 Closer to the end, Dorian will eventually open up to Eve, and help find the villains and the Academy; giving her own justice, as well as all the girls rescued。What follows is an intense, exciting, non-stop action filled race to find the people running the awful sex trafficking Academy。 The story is grim and tragic, with the last third of the book being very tense and exciting, with edge of your seat suspense。 With 55 books and many novellas, Eve has changed drastically from being alone to having so many friends and teammates she cares about。 J。D。 Robb once again gives us another masterpiece to this wonderful series, which I hope keeps on rolling for many years to come。 Desperation in Death is another masterpiece to this amazing series, which is always so very well written by J。D。 Robb。BarbThe Reading Cafe 。。。more

There’s also a little marital dissension going on with Roarke and Eve at odds over her involvement in this case because he knows it’ll stir up bad memories but as always, despite his misgivings, he’s always got her back and will support her no matter what。 One of the best things about this series is the fantastic character development not only with Eve as she’s gone from a solitary cop with few friends to someone surrounded by people who care about her even though she sometimes looks around and wonders where they all came from but also in Peabody, who’s gone from uniformed cop to homicide detective and Mavis, from grifter to global superstar and mother to name but a few。 They all add depth and detail to an amazing series and play an integral part in helping Eve solve crimes。 The subject matter contained in this book might not be to everyone’s taste but sex slave trade does go on, maybe not the widespread enterprise it does in this book and not in the so called civilised world but it is out there。 。。。more

Mina and Dorian, two young girls trapped in an horrific situation, and desperate enough to plan an escape。 The plan was a sound one, but when they were out on the streets, Dorian fell and suddenly Mina was running, leading them away from Dorian, so she could escape。 But Mina didn't have the same fortune as Dorian, and it was her body that Lieutenant Eve Dallas stood over, feeling a fury building inside。 As Eve and Peabody, plus the rest of the team worked around the clock, Roarke did the same in Mina and Dorian, two young girls trapped in an horrific situation, and desperate enough to plan an escape。 The plan was a sound one, but when they were out on the streets, Dorian fell and suddenly Mina was running, leading them away from Dorian, so she could escape。 But Mina didn't have the same fortune as Dorian, and it was her body that Lieutenant Eve Dallas stood over, feeling a fury building inside。 As Eve and Peabody, plus the rest of the team worked around the clock, Roarke did the same in his inimitable way。 As they all began to realise what was behind Mina's death, the horror of what the young girls faced - and for how long? - saw the team pull out all stops。 First they needed to find Dorian before those who abducted young girls, did。 Would they? Could they?Desperation in Death is number 55 in this addictive and astounding series by J。D。 Robb, and she handled the difficult subject matter with grace, with aplomb, and with caring, and helped Eve, Peabody and their team as they searched for justice for those innocent girls。 Every time I pick up the next In Death book, I know I'm going to be immensely satisfied, and Desperation in Death was no different。 Even after so many books, each one is fresh and new, with another intriguing plot。 Highly recommended。With thanks to Hachette AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Love Dallas and Roarke and this is one of the best in the series so far。 Very real, very gritty and very emotional, Desperation In Death deals with disturbing issues without pulling any punches, but somehow also manages to avoid gratuitous leery details。 It is difficult to portray the issues around child trafficking, homelessness and abuse accurately and in such a way that the reader is pulled into the narrative, but Robb manages this by juxtaposing the evil of the villains with the humanity, de Love Dallas and Roarke and this is one of the best in the series so far。 Very real, very gritty and very emotional, Desperation In Death deals with disturbing issues without pulling any punches, but somehow also manages to avoid gratuitous leery details。 It is difficult to portray the issues around child trafficking, homelessness and abuse accurately and in such a way that the reader is pulled into the narrative, but Robb manages this by juxtaposing the evil of the villains with the humanity, dedication and resolve of the detectives。 As always the victims are treated respectfully by the investigators an this focus on getting resolution nd justice for the victims is a winning mix。 Loved it! 。。。more

This 55th addition to the series is just as fresh, thrilling, engrossing, and suspenseful as the first one。 The characters are some of the most intriguing and interesting I’ve ever read and they grow personally and professionally with each new book。 You also couldn’t ask for a better cast of supporting characters – from the hard-hitting reporter, Nadine Frist, to the ebullient singer, Mavis Freestone, to the cops in Eve’s squad at Cop Central, they are all outstanding。 I really enjoyed this story because all of those supporting characters – and more – played key parts in solving the mystery and taking the bad guys down。 I have read every book in the series – some of them several times – and there isn’t a clinker in the bunch! The Pleasure Academy has been in the business of kidnapping young girls for many years。 Once the girls are imprisoned within the academy, they are ‘trained’ to service the gentlemen who will eventually purchase them。 There is no escape for the girls – no windows to climb out, no doors they can leave through。 They either comply with the training or suffer very severe consequences。 The Academy has survived all of these years because they are smart – very smart – with how they acquire the girls。 They have tentacles all over the world and they never take from the same place – at least not close together。 There is no single police force that has ever recognized the larger picture。 Each force investigates its own kidnappings – with many thinking the girls have just run away。 Then, the Academy makes a huge error。 Two of the girls manage to figure a way to escape – one of them dies for it – and Lt。 Eve Dallas catches her case。From the beginning, things just don’t add up for Eve。 This child had to have been well cared for, but she’s been missing for several months。 Her hair is perfectly styled with expensive products – even her nails are perfectly manicured。 But then, there is the sexy undergarments。 Why would this young girl be wearing expensive silk underthings? When Eve identifies the girl as Mina Rose Cabot, a child missing from Devon, Pennsylvania – a child who was much loved – Eve knows she isn’t just looking for a murderer – she’s looking for a child abductor。 There is a second set of bloodstains on Mina, and they belong to Dorian Gregg, a runaway from Freehold, New Jersey。 Is Dorian lying dead somewhere and just hasn’t been found yet? Is she injured? Was she recaptured? Or, is she the one who took Mina’s life?Eve, Roarke, Peabody, and the rest of the team put their laser focus on finding these child abductors and murderers only to learn that the operation is so much larger than they could ever have imagined。 Eve and Roarke struggle with emotional issues as they work through the case – after all – what these children are going through is very similar to both of their backgrounds as children。 That, of course, only makes them that much more determined to solve the case。I cannot recommend this book highly enough。 I believe it is one of my favorites of the series and I am quite sure it is one I’ll read again and again。 I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

Great book, I had heard that J D Robb was a good author, absolutely! I liked everything about this book, great storyline, great characters and a well paced read。Unfortunately this is book number 55, so I now have at least 54 books to read so that I can find out the back story, but that seems like a great plan!

Robb does not disappoint。 The cast of characters with the central theme is still presen。 Whilst drawing in peripheral characters for more story presence that you hope will reappear in future books。 Her imagination of diabolical crimes against humanity knows no boundaries and the revulsion you feel for the perpetrators will be real。 A page Turner as usual。

ARC copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。 Desperation in Death is the 55th book in the "in death" series by JD Robb。 This story follows Eve as she searches for the killer of a murdered teenage girl, while desperately searching for another missing teen (Dorian) before she suffers the same fate as the first。 Eve must untangle the lies and uncover the truth。 The case gets bigger and darker as time goes on。 There are more victims both dead and alive than when Eve and the team receive ARC copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。 Desperation in Death is the 55th book in the "in death" series by JD Robb。 This story follows Eve as she searches for the killer of a murdered teenage girl, while desperately searching for another missing teen (Dorian) before she suffers the same fate as the first。 Eve must untangle the lies and uncover the truth。 The case gets bigger and darker as time goes on。 There are more victims both dead and alive than when Eve and the team received the case。 I enjoyed reading Desperation in Death and I thought it was well written, it had a very good plot, as well as it held my attention from the first page to the very ending。 There were some parts that did feel like it was a bit slower, and with the story moving a bit slow as well。 There were a lot of characters making appearances throughout the book, JD Robb does a great job of keeping track of the characters, their characteristics, and continuity throughout。 At the end Eve solves the case, the murdered girl and her family gets justice, and Dorian gets her own justice and better ending then beginning。 。。。more
