Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Midwife Murders comes a twisted psychological thriller about a mother-to-be trying to find proof that she’s being stalked, even when everyone around her distrusts her mother’s intuition。

Emily Atkinson leads a complicated life in New York City。 She’s a successful marketing executive who lives in a luxury apartment and enjoys a glamorous existence until she lands in the hospital with a double diagnosis: she parties too much—and she’s pregnant。 Her nurse and new best friend, Betsey, helps Emily rediscover how much she loves morning runs in the park and quiet nights at home。 But as a series of women in her wealthy social circles go missing, Emily’s pregnancy becomes decidedly high-risk。

James Patterson never disappoints。 Great thriller right to the very end of the book。 Highly recommend it。 Very fast paced- page turner。

I struggled to finish this book。 In fact, I listened to the audiobook at 1。5x speed just to get through it。 The premise of the story was interesting but it went on for too long。 Emily is a young woman who finds out she’s pregnant after landing in the hospital drunk。 Having had disconnected parents, she struggles with what kind of mother she’ll be while trying to get sober。 When Emily disappears, her best friend Betsy seems to be doing more to find her than the police。 The ending sequence was the I struggled to finish this book。 In fact, I listened to the audiobook at 1。5x speed just to get through it。 The premise of the story was interesting but it went on for too long。 Emily is a young woman who finds out she’s pregnant after landing in the hospital drunk。 Having had disconnected parents, she struggles with what kind of mother she’ll be while trying to get sober。 When Emily disappears, her best friend Betsy seems to be doing more to find her than the police。 The ending sequence was the best part of the book。 It just wasn’t the type of James Patterson book I was expecting。 I would round up to to 2。5⭐️ 。。。more

So this was definitely not a favorite for me。 I am a huge Patterson fan but this storyline had me a little so-so right from the start。 Pregnant women who make poor choices with drugs, alcohol or men hold little appeal to me and a story with one who flounders in all three is definitely in the negative range of interest。 The characters were definitely well defined and the story moved right along with his signature short chapters - it simply was not my call to interest。Did not see that ending comin So this was definitely not a favorite for me。 I am a huge Patterson fan but this storyline had me a little so-so right from the start。 Pregnant women who make poor choices with drugs, alcohol or men hold little appeal to me and a story with one who flounders in all three is definitely in the negative range of interest。 The characters were definitely well defined and the story moved right along with his signature short chapters - it simply was not my call to interest。Did not see that ending coming at all。Good reading if you are good with the subject。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for a review。I didn't really like Emily Atkinson。 She is a spoiled little rich girl who drinks, parties and does drugs way too much and has no redeeming social value。 Then, when she passes out on the street after a particularly busy night, she finds she is not only sick from everything she has done to her body, she is also pregnant!! She doesn't know whether she will keep this baby or get rid of it, and she is so emotionally and physically drained that she can't even make THAT decision。 But Betsy, the nurse who was on duty in the ER the night Emily was brought in sees something in her that no one else does。 She sees a decent human being that, with a lot of support may show herself to the rest of the world。 Emily does decide to keep the baby, but she has a hard time not drinking, partying and generally carousing。 But the months pass and she falls in love with little "Oscar" in her belly。 Is someone stalking her? Or is she having hallucinations? WHAT is going on? And then she disappears。What follows is a story told in two parts: Emily's narration of her pregnancy and what she THINKS is happening, and Betsy's frantic efforts to find her friend before she has the baby。 This was hard to get into at first, partially because I REALLY didn't like Emily。 But it slowly caught my attention and I finished it quickly after about the halfway mark。 I did not figure out what was going on, and was suspicious of EVERYONE, just like Emily。 。。。more

A decent story, but the book dragged on and on for me。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Book started off good, and then really fell off from there。 The fact that she never really went missing for one, the rift between the 2 detectives, the giving birth on the *same* day, and esp that ending。 Pretty disappointed overall。

As much as I love James Patterson and want to give great reviews, I just cannot。 This was a fast read but the whole book just did not impress me。 It was a slow moving book and there were never any big "WOW" moments 。 For me, it fell flat。 Of everything。 As much as I love James Patterson and want to give great reviews, I just cannot。 This was a fast read but the whole book just did not impress me。 It was a slow moving book and there were never any big "WOW" moments 。 For me, it fell flat。 Of everything。 。。。more

Have all the editors been fired? This was one of the worst books I've read with JP's name on it。 It was 150 pages too long and the main character is unlikeable。 Have all the editors been fired? Ugh! This book definetly not a favorite and I read all his books。 Too confusing, I couldn’t keep up with everything and it seemed to last forever。 The ending did clear up a few things but not the one I would recommend。 Just way too over the top!!!!

It was way too long and one of my least favorite Patterson books。 I actually skimmed lots of pages just to get to the end and be done with it。 Really not much to the story and wasted my time。

I have read the Alex Cross series by James Patterson over the years, and “The Ninth Month” was a serious departure from Patterson’s usual crime thrillers。I absolutely loved the narrators voice of the “The Ninth Month,” she spoke melodically and her voice matched her character well。 This book was incredibly long, and I felt it could’ve been condensed by at least a quarter to get to the finale twist and climax at the end。I enjoyed the description of the opulence that Emily lived in - from referenc I have read the Alex Cross series by James Patterson over the years, and “The Ninth Month” was a serious departure from Patterson’s usual crime thrillers。I absolutely loved the narrators voice of the “The Ninth Month,” she spoke melodically and her voice matched her character well。 This book was incredibly long, and I felt it could’ve been condensed by at least a quarter to get to the finale twist and climax at the end。I enjoyed the description of the opulence that Emily lived in - from references to red soled shoes, Lalique glassware, artists, and more brands, I was impressed by the real-world knowledge the author had of luxury brands。 Emily is a wealthy trust fund ad-exec Princeton grad in her late 20’s, living in NYC, with a serious drinking problem who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant。 The story is a who dunnit on multiple levels, as the main question is who the father of her baby is, and who is stalking her, if indeed she is actually being stalked or not going crazy。My main gripe with the book was that it was about a pre grant woman, but clearly written by a man。 The reference to Emily’s poor balance due to her baby belly was inaccurate, you’re not falling over at only 5 months pregnant。 It could’ve been improved had an actual woman with pregnancy experience contributed to the writing。 Overall a solid 3。5 stars for me。 。。。more

I was very disappointed in this book。 I could not get into the characters and did not actually finish it。 I went from 25% complete and then read the end。 I would not recommend this one。 I usually love Patterson, but not this time。 :(

Almost as bad as Midwife Murders。 Patterson needs to distance himself from Dilallo。 We get a lady who is an ignorant, uncaring, selfish bitch, alcoholic。 She doesn't even care when her parents die。 She is pregnant - doesn't know who the father is, and continues to drink。 Why do we care what happens??? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I don’t even know the purpose of this story except to continually say “mucus plug”。 A missing pregnant girl who never was missing。 Another privileged rich kid who didn’t get enough attention so she found solice in a bottle and pills。 The ending was predictable and underwhelming。 No wonder I struggle to finish a book these days。 I suck at picking winners!

I thought that I was going to enjoy reading this but by the end I really didn’t。 The time line keeps jumping back and forth and it was confusing to read。 There were too many different points of view and the ending was really abrupt。

Not a usual good James P book- more of a convoluted mess and overly long。 Another reader described Emily as a hard worker (on what planet)? She arrives late, hung-over, leaves early and sleeps with whomever。

His books are crap but fun crap。

JP needs to quit putting his name on other peoples works, it’s making him look bad。 We have a rich drunk who gets pregnant and goes missing。 As the police search for her so does her new best friend。 The book has the potential to be great, it just needs to be rewritten。

This book was such a suspenseful, quick read for me。 I loved the short chapters which really made for a page-turning and fast-paced story。 I devoured this one about a pregnant woman who has a lot going on in her life and isn't sure she can trust her instincts about being followed。 I didn't see the ending coming and was very satisfied with how everything came together。 Thank you Grand Central Publishing for my free copy of this book。 This book was such a suspenseful, quick read for me。 I loved the short chapters which really made for a page-turning and fast-paced story。 I devoured this one about a pregnant woman who has a lot going on in her life and isn't sure she can trust her instincts about being followed。 I didn't see the ending coming and was very satisfied with how everything came together。 Thank you Grand Central Publishing for my free copy of this book。 。。。more

I was given this book by NetGalley for an honest review -Emily, an executive finds herself pregnant - now she must quit her drinking and partying,When Emily hears of two women missing she becomes very worried as she feels as if she is being stalked。 Is it for real or her imagination? Could it be one of her former lovers or the missing murderer they are looking for? Why would someone stalk her? And then - things begin to get really scary!

Average Patterson at best。Too many loose ends and unanswered questions。 Terrible characters with terrible behaviors and relationships。 I had hoped for more, and better, but this one was a let down。
