Summary

A widowed father and his young daughter embark on a life-changing journey in a heartening novel of family and second chances by the bestselling author of The Singing Trees

Adjusting to the death of his wife hasn’t been easy on Baxter Shaw—or on their eight-year-old daughter, Mia。 Baxter has left his band and abandoned his dreams to focus on being a single father, but it’s not enough: Mia’s exhibiting escalating behavioral problems。 And neither has been able to face the past head-on…until the past reaches out to them

After surprising results from a DNA test, Baxter and Mia journey to southeastern Spain to connect with their mysterious roots。 Staying in a centuries-old villa on a renowned olive oil estate, they come to know the family they never realized they had, including a woman whose strength and passion for the estate remind Baxter of the love he lost—and that it’s not too late to rekindle his own dreams。

For Baxter and Mia, it’s a healing season in Spain, and the romance of the culture awakens a new outlook on life。 But when long-simmering family secrets surface and the estate’s fate is called into question, Baxter must choose to let go of the past if he ever hopes to find love and live again。

Perfectly Poignant。 This is ultimately a story of family and healing, and yet again Walker uses both the situations and the settings to combine to work great magic in his storytelling。 The base setup turns out to be something that is almost ripped from the headlines, and while some fiction authors can and have gone a more preachy route with the topic, Walker instead eschews the politics completely and looks at the very human side of what actually happens in such a situation。 Truly an excellent w Perfectly Poignant。 This is ultimately a story of family and healing, and yet again Walker uses both the situations and the settings to combine to work great magic in his storytelling。 The base setup turns out to be something that is almost ripped from the headlines, and while some fiction authors can and have gone a more preachy route with the topic, Walker instead eschews the politics completely and looks at the very human side of what actually happens in such a situation。 Truly an excellent work, and one that this reader at least could easily imagine Luke Bryan playing the leading role。。。 should Bryan ever decide to make such a career move。 Very much recommended。 。。。more

I struggled a bit with Baxter because I wanted to shake him so many times for the way he was processing/grieving and what he assumed was right for his daughter, Mia。 But THEN the plot thickened & blossomed。 Sofia’s family in Spain was so complicated but also inspiring in their loyalty to one another。 I love Boo Walker’s unhurried way that he writes and let’s us really step into the character’s thoughts and feelings。 This is my 3rd book of his and it is a 3。5 star read for me。 I can’t wait to kee I struggled a bit with Baxter because I wanted to shake him so many times for the way he was processing/grieving and what he assumed was right for his daughter, Mia。 But THEN the plot thickened & blossomed。 Sofia’s family in Spain was so complicated but also inspiring in their loyalty to one another。 I love Boo Walker’s unhurried way that he writes and let’s us really step into the character’s thoughts and feelings。 This is my 3rd book of his and it is a 3。5 star read for me。 I can’t wait to keep reading more from the Author! Loved this book! The story was entertaining and the descriptions of the food, the lifestyle and the people in Spain were so inspiring! I should have had bread, wine and olive oil nearby as I was reading! Very thoughtful story that provokes the reader to take a step back and wonder what life would be like if we all slowed down a little to discover the roots and connection of life and family。

We’ve all struggled through change and growth through life。 Boo Walker captures the reality of the struggle of a man at a pivotal time in his life through realistic thoughts, emotional growth, the inevitable “I don’t like this,” and environmental beauty and experience in A Spanish Sunrise。 The vulnerability in this story will soften the heart and the true happiness that unfolds is sure to delight。

Boo Walker continues to astound me with his storytelling and his ability to bring readers to any locale and immerse them in the culture。 This time I was taken to Spain and brought into an olive oil estate and a family ripe with secrets。 The attention to culture is engaging but the way the author drives the story forward by focusing on the love a father has for his daughter and how her restoration has a positive affect on his life is refreshing。 A great read!

My sincere thanks to Boo Walker and Lake Union Publishing for my complimentary copy of this lovely book, via NetGalley, in exchange for my honest, from-the-heart review。 I did enjoy this book, mostly。 The author's writing style is honest and heart-warming。 His characters seem believable, for the most part。 That is true for me of any book I read, though。 I've just lived so long that I often, think, really, would someone say or do that? I digress。 This is not the first book I've read by Boo Walker。 I got hooked on reading him with the trilogy of the Red Mountain Series。 Those are some characters! I loved those books and The Singing Trees! You must read that, if you love a good cry at the end, like I do。 Sadly, I was not moved enough to cry at the end of this book。 That's my tell for a 5-star rating! I rather feel like I want more to the story with this one。 I am hoping for a sequel because the ending felt a little unfinished to me。 I liked it enough to want to know what's next for widower Baxter Shaw and his young daughter, Mia。 Baxter feels some guilt about the tragic death of his beautiful young wife, Sophia, even though, in truth, and he knows it, there was nothing he could have done to prevent it, unless he had been a psychic and could foresee the events of that horrible day。 So he tries to keep the truth from 8-year-old Mia about how her mom died, and it bites him。 She finds out in the worst way, from someone else。 And so the journey of healing begins for Mia and Baxter。 As they travel to Spain to meet long lost relatives of Sophia, whom Sophia herself didn't even know, they begin to learn more about each other and how to navigate the waters of grief, with the help of some lovely characters。 I loved Sophia's birth mother。 She was spunky and seemed like she would be a wonderful grandma! The character I had the hardest time liking was Baxter himself。 I think that's another reason for only 4 stars。 I wanted to reach into the pages and shake some sense into him, yell at him for his stubbornness! At times I was so mad at him I had to put my Kindle down and calm myself。 I guess that says a lot about how Boo describes him。 He did seem like a real person to me, one I probably wouldn't be friends with。 All kidding aside, this is a decent read for the beach or a warm fall afternoon out in the sun。 Don't expect to be moved to tears, but do expect to meet some very nice people, just not the main character。 。。。more
