Summary

#1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Charlaine Harris returns to her alternate history of the United States where magic is an acknowledged but despised power in this fourth installment of the Gunnie Rose series。

Felicia, Lizbeth Rose's younger half-sister and student at the Grigori school within the capital of the New Holy Russian Empire in San Diego, is caught between secrets and powerful family struggles。 As a distant relative to the tsar, she provides an essential service to him by providing blood transfusions for his hemophilia, and she is thus given rare access and dismissed as if cattle。

At the Grigori school she is seen as a charity case, a poor orphan with no prospects and no sign of magical prowess--the latter which Felicia keeps purposefully hidden。 And yet, when a kidnapping attempt is made upon Felicia her past and her future crash together in violent ways。

Felicia, it turns out, is far more than the Russian-Mexican waif Lizbeth rescued, and the journey of discovery she is on is filled with magical assassins and desperation, but above it all is her courage to never give in to the limitations imposed upon her。

Continuing immediately after The Russian Cage, this fantastical fourth audiobook takes a side step, exploring the Holy Russian Empire while also showcasing the dynamic depths of magic within Harris's alternate North America in curious mysteries。

I enjoy any book by Charlaine Harris, and this one is no different。 I have liked the Gunnie Rose series more than I had expected。 I am generally not an alternate history person。 But this series is definitely one of the exceptions。 This book was a change from the rest of the series as it starred the main characters sister Felicia。 Fortunately, Harris has left enough in the other books to make Felicia interesting and a good character for a book in the series。 Considering this though, I enjoyed the I enjoy any book by Charlaine Harris, and this one is no different。 I have liked the Gunnie Rose series more than I had expected。 I am generally not an alternate history person。 But this series is definitely one of the exceptions。 This book was a change from the rest of the series as it starred the main characters sister Felicia。 Fortunately, Harris has left enough in the other books to make Felicia interesting and a good character for a book in the series。 Considering this though, I enjoyed the book and learned more about characters not previously explored in depth。 But, I thought it was less exciting then previous books。 Rather then having everything lead up into a big moment in the story, it was many lead ups into smaller moments。 In this way, the book felt like a novella。 I did not mind this but it made me wish for another story immediately, I wanted to read more (though that would have likely happened anyway)。 I hope there will be more books, because I do feel there is more of Felicia's story to be told and once there are more books this one will have those stories to support it。 My final thought is, if your a fan of the author and/or series don't skip this story。 Fingers crossed there will be more。 (Thanks to Edelweiss and Gallery/Saga Press for the ARC) 。。。more

Yay for another Gunnie Rose installment— even if this one is focused on Felicia and her burgeoning story in the Russian school。 Boy, what a whopper of a story it is, too — new magic, sudden adolescence as a spell wears off, and the usual bloodthirstily pragmatic self- defense that makes these books so satisfying。 Peter and Felix are still around, and much is revealed of her mysterious origins。 Great stuff, mile-a-minute, and a heroine who won’t take crap from anyone。 There is a depiction of the Yay for another Gunnie Rose installment— even if this one is focused on Felicia and her burgeoning story in the Russian school。 Boy, what a whopper of a story it is, too — new magic, sudden adolescence as a spell wears off, and the usual bloodthirstily pragmatic self- defense that makes these books so satisfying。 Peter and Felix are still around, and much is revealed of her mysterious origins。 Great stuff, mile-a-minute, and a heroine who won’t take crap from anyone。 There is a depiction of the flu epidemic, so if it’s too soon, be warned。Advanced readers copy provided by Edelweiss 。。。more

Electronic ARC provided by Edelweiss。 I had no idea that this book was coming out, and so I was super excited to see it pop up for review。 Charlaine Harris' work is always fun and I've really been enjoying her weird take on magic, US history, and the Russian monarchy。 The Serpent in Heaven follows Felicia, Lizbeth's half sister, who is in a Grigori school on the west coast。 Felicia is a great viewpoint character。 She's young (about fifteen), self-sufficient, and has a bit of an anger management Electronic ARC provided by Edelweiss。 I had no idea that this book was coming out, and so I was super excited to see it pop up for review。 Charlaine Harris' work is always fun and I've really been enjoying her weird take on magic, US history, and the Russian monarchy。 The Serpent in Heaven follows Felicia, Lizbeth's half sister, who is in a Grigori school on the west coast。 Felicia is a great viewpoint character。 She's young (about fifteen), self-sufficient, and has a bit of an anger management problem。 She also has major issues with some previously unknown family members。 I really enjoyed this book overall。 The setting is the same as in the third Lizbeth book, which is nice because I found the dynamics around the Tsar to be one of the more interesting parts of Lizbeth's trilogy。 Many of the characters from the previous book make appearances, and we get to see a lot more of the school。 My biggest issue with this book was just that there was an awful lot going on, and sometimes it felt like a bit too many threads for one book。 I really hope that Harris is planning on continuing Felicia's story。 I had a lot of fun reading about her adventures, and anyone who enjoyed Lizbeth's story should be looking forward to this continuation。 。。。more
