Summary

For three women in postwar Germany, 1945 is a time of hope—lost and found—in this powerful novel by the bestselling author of The Woman on the Orient Express

Just weeks after World War II ends, three women from different corners of the world arrive in Germany to run a Displaced Persons camp。 They long to help rebuild shattered lives—including their own…

For Martha, going to Germany provides an opportunity to escape Brooklyn and a violent marriage。 Arriving from England is orphaned Kitty。 She hopes working at the camp will bring her closer to her parents, last seen before the war began。 For Delphine, Paris has been a city of ghosts after her husband and son died in Dachau。 Working at the camp is her chance to find meaning again by helping other victims of Hitler’s regime。

Charged with the care of more than two thousand camp residents, Martha, Delphine, and Kitty draw on each other’s strength to endure and to give hope when all seems lost。 Among these strangers and survivors, they might find the love and closure they need to heal their hearts and leave their troubled pasts behind。

Although this was heavy, it was a wonderfully done book。 I learned something new about this era。 Highly recommend if you want to learn more about the post-WW2 displaced person camps in Europe。

what a Story! An amazing look into a truly devastating time for humanity and all its good, bad and ugly。 The story was just laid out so smoothly it was as if the author was there telling it herself。 The hope throughout and even some HEA makes this a YES to a book you need to read!

I picked this from the Amazon First read list because I love historical fiction and I was intrigued to read a book based on the after math of WWII。 I've read several books based on events during WWII and, the horrors that took place, but I've never read one based just after the war, and the efforts taken to help those that were liberated。 This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed her writing style。 I was drawn in from the beginning and felt a connection with all 3 woman that the I picked this from the Amazon First read list because I love historical fiction and I was intrigued to read a book based on the after math of WWII。 I've read several books based on events during WWII and, the horrors that took place, but I've never read one based just after the war, and the efforts taken to help those that were liberated。 This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed her writing style。 I was drawn in from the beginning and felt a connection with all 3 woman that the story revolves around。 One is running from an abusive husband in the states, one who lived through hell in France, loosing her husband and son, so she takes this post to be closer to where they died, and one that was sent to live in London by her parents, for her own safety when things started getting bad, and all she wants to do now is find out if they made it out alive。 They must set their own wants and needs aside to do what they came to do for the UNRRA to help those brought to a displaced persons camp。 Realizing that all though things may have gotten a bit better after these people had been liberated it was far from over for them and there would be more horrors to come。 These ladies form an unbreakable bond as they come together to help those who have suffered。 A beautifully written story! 5 Stars for me! 。。。more

Fluffy and predictable。 Light on history, heavy on romance。 Not what I look for in historical fiction。

Wonderful storyLoved the characters and insight into the lives of the many people displaced by the war and the difficulties they still faced after the war ended

Good story about a part of post-WWll history that I knew little about。

RIVETINGWhat a beautiful yet sad story。 This story gives a good look at what Displaced people must have gone through in Germany and in Poland。 The characters To make you wish for the happiest of all comes for them。 I love to this book。

A Moving StoryBy the second chapter I was hooked and couldn’t read fast enough。 Each of the three women is coping with loss by changing。 They leave their current home full of pain and find a new purpose in life by helping displaced persons after WWII。

This was an okay book, but nothing like the many five star books I've read about the war。 The biggest problem is there is no plot。 Several times I considered giving up, I like books that keep you in suspense about what's going to happen next。 I need incentive to keep going, and this book didn't do that。 It is a little unrealistic in the fact that they all live happily ever after, and that was obvious throughout the book。 Writing skills are good and book is easy to read, but I wasn't impressed wi This was an okay book, but nothing like the many five star books I've read about the war。 The biggest problem is there is no plot。 Several times I considered giving up, I like books that keep you in suspense about what's going to happen next。 I need incentive to keep going, and this book didn't do that。 It is a little unrealistic in the fact that they all live happily ever after, and that was obvious throughout the book。 Writing skills are good and book is easy to read, but I wasn't impressed with the story。 。。。more

Precious lifeThis storyline makes you think about how people lived in the immediate aftermath of the war。 I would have liked a little more detail on how supplies were obtained during this time of chaos。

Excellent story This was such an incredible story! I enjoyed every bit of it。 I had no knowledge of the camps and such after the war。

Slow readingKept me reading because the book opened my mind about the poor people who were displaced from the war。 Makes you feel so many emotions for what happened。

This story provides a great glimpse of history at a time following WW II when survivors of Nazi occupation of their countries, including Jewish survivors。 I learned a lot that I did not know about the aftermath of the war and the ongoing struggles of rebuilding lives。 The story itself is a bit routine with everything tied up nicely with a bow by the end。

I really liked this book。 I did not want to put it down。 It was a well written book。 The story line was unique with a lot of sub stories。 I could imagine what it must have been like it the later part of the world war and the concentration camps in Germany。 Three women had very different lives but come together and do exceptional work。 I highly recommend this book

I found this book to be disappointing and not at all what I expected。 Audible Is categorizes this book, not as historical romance or historical fiction, but as World War II。Based on the publisher's summary of the book and the description of it as being about The aftermath of World War II, I thought that that it would describe the difficulties in a displaced person's camp after the end of the war。In addition, I thought that it would describe the difficulties faced by the three women in the story。 I found this book to be disappointing and not at all what I expected。 Audible Is categorizes this book, not as historical romance or historical fiction, but as World War II。Based on the publisher's summary of the book and the description of it as being about The aftermath of World War II, I thought that that it would describe the difficulties in a displaced person's camp after the end of the war。In addition, I thought that it would describe the difficulties faced by the three women in the story。 Martha, an American, ends up as the administrator of the camp with little experience and no foreign language skills。 How did she manage that and why was she thrust into that position without training or support。 There was no indication of how she managed the kitchen staff and if they were displaced persons or military。 In fact there was no indication of how she handled the myriad problems that would arise when managing a camp of as many as 2000 DPs。 A problem would arise, the women would say "Oh dear, now what do we do?" and then in no time a solution would fall into their laps。 And the author doesn't discuss problem like sanitation and mud and fights between the displace people and sexual abuse and all the other things that undoubtedly occurred。 Nor does she talk about dysentery or typhus or cholera or TB。Finally, for me personally, I could have done without all the attention being paid to romances。It wasn't a 3 for me but I gave it that rating because I could see it appealing to others who like romance and neat little solutions to everything。 。。。more

A view of life after the war。This book is a great combination of history combined with fictional characters, but based on true history。 Lindsay Jayne Ashford seems to know how to draw a reader into the story。 She describes events, feelings and personality that I can infusion the different characters。 I highly recommend this book to fellow readers。

Displaced Persons Camps in Post WW2 GermanyI was 11 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and was a teenager as World War2 progressed。 I really never knew what happened at the DP Camps until reading this book。 I enjoy novels which depict real life。 I was hard for me to put down the book each day。 It certainly kept my interest。 I would recommend this well written and informed book!

A very different story of WWII。 This story takes place in a displaced persons camp in Bavaria, Germany。 Three young women, Martha, Kitty, and Delphine, run the camp。 Each have come from different countries, for different reasons。 The war may be over but the recovery is just beginning。 Each person has a different story and different hopes。 I have read many WWII stories。 This is the first about the displaced persons camps and the long wait to find new homes and new lives。 This camp is full of Poli A very different story of WWII。 This story takes place in a displaced persons camp in Bavaria, Germany。 Three young women, Martha, Kitty, and Delphine, run the camp。 Each have come from different countries, for different reasons。 The war may be over but the recovery is just beginning。 Each person has a different story and different hopes。 I have read many WWII stories。 This is the first about the displaced persons camps and the long wait to find new homes and new lives。 This camp is full of Polish people who had been in concentration camps run by the Nazis。 I won’t give up any spoilers。 I will just say this book is well written。 The author draws you into each woman’s story immediately。 Highly recommend! 。。。more

A great readAs always, LJA delivers a great story with an inside view of some of the hardships that people had to endure。 I find myself wondering about the end result for the priest。

Although there was much jubilation and celebration on V-E Day, and rightly so, the end of the war in Europe meant thousands and thousands of displaced people。 It breaks my heart to think about all those who managed to survive the war only to be put in a camp, full of uncertainty about their future, many of them without a home or family to return to。 This is a lovely, well-told story about three women who ran one of these displaced-person camps in Bavaria, not far from Dachau, and the many DPs wh Although there was much jubilation and celebration on V-E Day, and rightly so, the end of the war in Europe meant thousands and thousands of displaced people。 It breaks my heart to think about all those who managed to survive the war only to be put in a camp, full of uncertainty about their future, many of them without a home or family to return to。 This is a lovely, well-told story about three women who ran one of these displaced-person camps in Bavaria, not far from Dachau, and the many DPs who touched their lives。 。。。more

Aftermath of World War II。This book gave me a tremendous insight into what Europe was like after World War II and all the camps for the displaced persons and how they survived and what happened to them。 Great read。

Sharon

This book relates the lives of three women who unselfishly volunteer after WWII to help in a displaced person camp。 Life and politics keep them on their toes for the better part of two years before the camp is scheduled to be closed and the people moved on to new lives。 It is a sweet story but also horrendous for people of war torn countries。 A good read。

Set in a displaced persons camp in postwar Germany, this is a well-written story of three women working for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration。 While I thought this was an absorbing and excellent read, I did feel most of the displaced persons were a mere backdrop for a story, rather than living, breathing people。

Michelle

This is one of the best books I have read in a long time。

Post WWII GermanyThree women come together in post war Germany to work in a refugee camp 。They all have different motives for leaving their homes and different talents they can apply to the job。 All three are hiding secrets。 I enjoyed the character development and a glimpse of the aftermath of the war

Very informativeWhat millions of people did to survive and even thrive。 Everyone needs someone。 Help comes out of compassion and love。 No one can take that from you。
