Summary

When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom—covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her—she knows she'll be charged with murder。 But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most。 With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future。

Twenty-five years earlier, Ruby Reyes, known as the Ice Queen, was convicted of a similar murder in a trial that riveted Canada in the early nineties。 Reyes knows who Paris really is, and when she's unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to expose all of Paris's secrets。 Left with no other choice, Paris must finally confront the dark past she escaped, once and for all。

Because the only thing worse than a murder charge are two murder charges。

Things We Do in the Dark is a brilliant new thriller from Jennifer Hillier, the award-winning author of the breakout novels Little Secrets and Jar of Hearts。 Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future。

I wanted to like this more than I did, it just didn’t do it for me。 The amount of child abuse kind of ruined it, just something about this one wasn’t my favorite。 But it still was a well written and twisty thriller。 The timeline jumps were well done。

Very exciting book with lots of twists and turns at the end。 At some points I had trouble keeping track of all the characters especially the extremely minor ones but other than that a great read!

Nothing else to say except boring。 It was really slow and nothing interesting was happening。 Plus very wordy。 I got through about half of it before I was just to bored and decided to just give up on it

This book was fast paced and got my attention from the start! I am not a fast reader but I couldn’t put this one down and read it in 2 days。 I have read several Jennifer Hillier books and loved them so I couldn’t wait to read this one and it did not disappoint! This book was suspenseful and full of twists and thrills! I loved it! Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read the advance reader copy in exchange for my review! I would definitely recommend this book to others!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book。 it definitely made me think, and while I predicted some of the twists, there were a lot I did not predict。 I thought the ending was done very nicely, and didn’t feel that any plot lines were left open。if you want to read a murder mystery/thriller book I would recommend this one。

solid thriller with a page turning suspense that will keep you guessing til the end about what really happened

Did I like it? Yep。 Am I emotionally traumatized? Yep。 Did I stay up late to finish? Also yep。 Lots of TW in this book。 I can see a lot of people really disliking this book as well。 Some shock ans awe factor that could have been removed to not make it as TW intense。

This was my first time reading a book from this author and I didn’t really love it。 I went into this without ever reading the synopsis, maybe I should have, but this just didn’t work for me。 The last half was much more interesting but I still just wasn’t invested into this story or group of characters sadly。CW: murder, child abuse, sexual violence, suicide, mental health, addiction, racism, body shaming, misogyny

One of the best thrillers I’ve read in awhile! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️。5Genre: Mystery/ Thrillers Warning: Lots if triggers (sexual assault, abuse, drugs, violence) Summary: I feel like I can’t give out too many details because there are SO many twists in turns。 Without giving too much away, I can say this: Paris is a mysterious women who has been accused of her older, wealthy, husband’s death。 While the investigation ensues, so does an investigation on another women’s death 25 years prior。 Thoughts: T One of the best thrillers I’ve read in awhile! This was my first thriller! I loved this book。 I was concerned when I got to the end that it couldn’t wrap everything up, but was pleasantly surprised。 As a chronic “figure it out early” person, it managed to surprise me even when I thought I had it all figured out。 And another excellent show of grief。 I’ll definitely be reading more of Jennifer Hillier。

Thank you to NetGalley for an audio copy of this story。 This was my first book by this author and I was hooked。 The story is a slow burn mystery and some parts are a tad predictable but I did enjoy it。 Paris has so many secrets that she does not want exposed。 However, when her famous husband is found dead and she is accused of his murder all her hidden secrets are in jeopardy of being revealed。 From an abusive mother, to several sexual assaults and child abuse this book is DARK。 If you have any Thank you to NetGalley for an audio copy of this story。 This was my first book by this author and I was hooked。 The story is a slow burn mystery and some parts are a tad predictable but I did enjoy it。 Paris has so many secrets that she does not want exposed。 However, when her famous husband is found dead and she is accused of his murder all her hidden secrets are in jeopardy of being revealed。 From an abusive mother, to several sexual assaults and child abuse this book is DARK。 If you have any triggers to child abuse, child predators, suicide or murder best to stay away from this story。 。。。more

It was an interesting plot but felt pretty unbelievable。 The twists at the end came a little too late as I was getting bored midway through。 I wouldn’t recommend this book of hers as she has much better ones。

Definitely held my attention。 I didn't find any of the twists to be surprising, but rarely do I find twists surpring (read enough, and this is the consequence!)。 A fascinating, quick read that I finished in one+ day - and that, notably, held my attention enough not to put it down! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Wow! I’m leaving notes so I don’t forget what happened。 This was such a page turner。 I liked all of the two twists。 There were 4 twists and each one was a good build up to a better one coming。 The first twist was that “Paris,” is really Joey who was thought to have died in a house fire。 That wasn’t too difficult to figure out since they kept referring to how much she looked like her fellow stripper friend Mae。 I also liked that Elsie killed the famous Jimmy Perelta because she never got over her Wow! I enjoyed this book。 There was A LOT going on though, some things predictable, some things not。 I'm Not sure I'd describe it as a psychological thriller。 But it was a good read。 I enjoyed this book。 There was A LOT going on though, some things predictable, some things not。 I'm Not sure I'd describe it as a psychological thriller。 But it was a good read。 。。。more

A fantastic suspense with dynamic, addicting characters。 The storyline moves at breakneck speed, weaving past and present with one shock after another。 Hillier shines in her storytelling, enigmatic plot line, and exemplary characterization。 Highly recommended。Thanks to #NetGalley for ARC of #ThingsWeDoInTheDark which was read and reviewed voluntarily。

Wonderful thriller -- have not read Hillier before, but will try all her books now。 Can't understand those who found this book slow or tedious。 I loved every page。 Great descriptions of child abuse as well as "dancers"。 Loved Drew and Chaz。 Others? Not bad, but not as good as the reviews made me believe it was。 I liked it, but it was kind of bland in my opinion。 There was just something missing for me。 It wasn't bad, but I just didn't think it lived up to the hype it's been given。Paris Peralta, wife of a famous comedian that is a lot older than she is, has been accused of his murder。 The police arrest her after finding her holding the murder weapon near her husbands body。 Secrets from her past start to bubble up, she has been living as "Pa Not bad, but not as good as the reviews made me believe it was。 I liked it, but it was kind of bland in my opinion。 There was just something missing for me。 It wasn't bad, but I just didn't think it lived up to the hype it's been given。Paris Peralta, wife of a famous comedian that is a lot older than she is, has been accused of his murder。 The police arrest her after finding her holding the murder weapon near her husbands body。 Secrets from her past start to bubble up, she has been living as "Paris" although she is really Joey from Canada。 Not to spoil anything, but she had a troubled childhood then became a stripper (yawn) and went on the lamb after things at the strip club went sideways。 Yada, yada, yada。 。。。more

I’m such a fan of this author but this one was just ok for me。 It didn’t have some of the depth or the oomph of her other writing。
