If it’s mid-July it’s time for another Daniel Silva thriller featuring Gabriel Allon, and this one is a beaut! Allon, the former Director of Israeli Intelligence, is retired in Venice with his wife and two children。 His friend, London art dealer Julian Isherwood, has a meeting scheduled with a woman who has raised concerns about the provenance of a piece of art Julian’s gallery has sold。 In short order, the woman is murdered by unknown assailants, Julian is accosted, and his hotel room is searched。 Who would he reach out to investigate but his old friend Gabriel Alone - master spy, artist, and art restorer extraordinaire。As often happens in Mr。 Silva’s stories, a string is pulled that unravels the whole garment。 What starts as an investigation of one painting ends up leading the protagonists all over the world to uncover an operation of enormous proportions。 It’s a thrilling ride, to say the least! For longtime Gabriel Allon fans, it’s nice to see him starting to decompress after so many years of bearing the weight of his country’s security on his shoulders。 He’s enjoying life, but slightly bored。 When he’s asked for help by Isherwood he’s back in his element in a flash。 This is the Gabriel we’re used to! I have a feeling his future will include some intriguing clandestine operations, interspersed with happy family times - a great combination and a fitting “retirement” for our favorite spy。I’m admittedly a great fan of Mr。 Silva’s writing and this series, and so look forward to these books being released each year! They’re literary crack - I finished the book at 1:30 am as I couldn’t put it down。 I received a complimentary advance copy of the book from the publisher in the hope that I would write a truthful review, and here it is。 I loved the book, and have purchased an additional copy to donate to my library, and a Kindle version to be read again on my e-reader。 If you like international thrillers, I highly recommend Portrait of an Unknown Woman! 。。。more

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Daniel Silva's 22nd book having read all the previous 21。 I am sure it will be another triumph。 So I have no review at the moment, but I am giving it five stars anyway because it's Daniel Silva and it's Gabriel Alon。 I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of Daniel Silva's 22nd book having read all the previous 21。 I am sure it will be another triumph。 So I have no review at the moment, but I am giving it five stars anyway because it's Daniel Silva and it's Gabriel Alon。 。。。more

Gabriel proves there is life after The Office。Well, the unthinkable has happened。 Gabriel Allon, spymaster and head of the Israeli secret service has retired。 For real。 He and his family have relocated to their beloved Venice, where he will take up post as a director at his wife's art company。 But not before he takes a well earned rest。 Fans feared for Gabriel's (and his creator's!) ability to build a life after leaving King Saul Boulevard。 So much of Gabriel was tied up in his endless job of br Gabriel proves there is life after The Office。Well, the unthinkable has happened。 Gabriel Allon, spymaster and head of the Israeli secret service has retired。 For real。 He and his family have relocated to their beloved Venice, where he will take up post as a director at his wife's art company。 But not before he takes a well earned rest。 Fans feared for Gabriel's (and his creator's!) ability to build a life after leaving King Saul Boulevard。 So much of Gabriel was tied up in his endless job of bringing the enemies of Israel and the world to justice, it was difficult to imagine him settling into a life of leisure。And, of course, he doesn't。 After a short time recovering physically and mentally from the events of the last few books, a call from his friend Julian Isherwood draws Gabriel into the world of art fraud and money laundering。 We also meet many friends from previous books, including my favourite clairvoyant。 Daniel Silva has clearly been planning this pivotal book for a while, conscious that his hero will need new challenges and adventures to keep him and his readers occupied。 And, in my opinion, he has succeeded。 With only a minimal mention of his comrades at The Office, and with virtually no help from them at all, Gabriel still succeeds in investigating the bad guys, uncovering a world-wide art fraud network, then launching his trademark sting operation t0 punish the guilty and save the innocent。 Along the way we get the usual impeccable research wound around the plot, and the building tension as the net he casts pulls in his nemesis。 Along the way, there's plenty of time to see Gabriel, Chiara and their children re-building their lives and relationships。。 We actually see Gabriel coming back to life, enjoying painting, drinking coffee in corner cafes and picking the kids up from school。 He and Chiara certainly make time for themselves too! While newcomers to the series could pick up the book and enjoy it, inevitably, it will appeal most to fans of the series, and I don't think they'll be disappointed。 I was glad to receive a Netgalley review copy, but you can bet I'll be waiting in line for a real copy。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Portrait of an Unknown Woman is a departure from the previous books as Gabriel is now retired from The Office and living in Venice with Chiara and their children。 Not to say this book lacks excitement, it is different in that there is more of a slow burn as the battles are of wits rather than fists。 The story is filled with spy craft and mind craft。 It’s a true old-fashioned thriller with the three elements that often lead to one’s downfall, money, mistresses and murder。I enjoyed the dynamic of Portrait of an Unknown Woman is a departure from the previous books as Gabriel is now retired from The Office and living in Venice with Chiara and their children。 Not to say this book lacks excitement, it is different in that there is more of a slow burn as the battles are of wits rather than fists。 The story is filled with spy craft and mind craft。 It’s a true old-fashioned thriller with the three elements that often lead to one’s downfall, money, mistresses and murder。I enjoyed the dynamic of Chiara calling the shots as to when Gabriel can start working again and he seems ok living up to his promise to her。 I missed Eli and Mikhail but Sarah, Christopher and Julian are all present。One of my favorite aspects of Daniel Silva’s writing is the crisp dialogue between the characters。 What needs to be said is said without unnecessary conversation。 Gabriel’s conversations with his daughter Irene are particularly endearing。My knowledge of art is very elementary。 This series has me googling the art pieces and places to see what is real and could I visit。 I find the level of detail that can be investigated to determine real from fake pieces fascinating。The Gabriel Allon series continues to be one of my favorite discoveries。I was given an advance copy to review。 。。。more

I was fortunate to receive an early copy of this book from the publisher during a drawing。 I’m a huge fan of Daniel Silva and his astounding character Gabriel Allon。 I await each summer for the next novel in the series。 This was quite the treat。Not to give too much away but Gabriel, Chiara, Irene, and Raphael are now living in Venice after Gabriel has retired from The Office。 This is a story of art and money and intrigue。 Many familiar characters return for this story。 Julien Isherwood, Sarah Ba I was fortunate to receive an early copy of this book from the publisher during a drawing。 I’m a huge fan of Daniel Silva and his astounding character Gabriel Allon。 I await each summer for the next novel in the series。 This was quite the treat。Not to give too much away but Gabriel, Chiara, Irene, and Raphael are now living in Venice after Gabriel has retired from The Office。 This is a story of art and money and intrigue。 Many familiar characters return for this story。 Julien Isherwood, Sarah Bancroft, and many of the denizens of Mason’s Yard。This is a stellar story as all of the Allon stories are。 It has intrigue, murder, great wine and food and characters you won’t soon forget。 My only advice is go out and purchase this on July 19th so you can enjoy it as much as I did。 I would like to thank Harper for gifting me this copy。 。。。more

Just as Gabriel Allon is always drawn back into a case by his friends or coworkers, I am likewise unfailingly drawn in by Daniel Silva to each of his gripping, sophisticated crime stories。 His latest, The Portrait of an Unknown Woman is yet another example of a beautifully written, compelling caper thriller enhanced by Silva's unique ability to transport the reader into a world of conspiracies, thievery, and betrayal。 Due to the author's descriptive talents the reader feels at home in the many ( Just as Gabriel Allon is always drawn back into a case by his friends or coworkers, I am likewise unfailingly drawn in by Daniel Silva to each of his gripping, sophisticated crime stories。 His latest, The Portrait of an Unknown Woman is yet another example of a beautifully written, compelling caper thriller enhanced by Silva's unique ability to transport the reader into a world of conspiracies, thievery, and betrayal。 Due to the author's descriptive talents the reader feels at home in the many (glamorous and decidedly non-glamorous) settings of Europe, from London's Bond Street, through Bordeaux, Marseilles, Barcelona, and the medieval hill towns of Umbria。 Reading Silva is to experience adventure, culture, and the results of the paths we choose in life。 。。。more

Gabriel Allon Again? It is the gift that keeps on giving, isn’t it? It’s easy, stylish storytelling 101 reminiscent of the early detective genre。 Reminiscent of Dashiell Hammett and black and white detective movies。 The quick jab or two came in the beginning; I was laughing by page 38 at the expense of the readers who’d said, ‘if there’s any of that left-wing stuff in this one, I’m returning it and never reading another’。 He got that out of the way quickly, didn’t he? It was fast paced but leisurely in its descriptions and was again like a master class but this time in art。 Not just art restoration techniques but ART and how brilliant Silva is that he has the best teachers like David Bull advising him。 I sat with the phone next to me; not to answer it but to look up painting techniques to get a clearer picture of the techniques involved。 (And I paint but am an amateur) The feeling was that I was in a small class being taught by a master who painted a picture with words。 All through the painting lessons you’re lured into another old-fashioned Gabriel Allon web full of spycraft, murder, deceit, and cunning。 And your heart begins to race as you read the clues and discover the deception just as it has every year in such a familiar way。 For me, it’s the words。 It’s always the words because Silva is masterful in not only painting a picture with words but creating an environment that you could almost reach out and smell and touch and feel like the macchia (and the goat)。 With those words he also recreates the memories and the history of familiar characters from the previous books。 Poor Gabriel。 Just as he was settling into a new life in a city that saved his life and shedding his problemed past ‘they pulled him back in’ with old and new friends helping him with yet another restoration。 This time his Chiara was fully on board with this but I’m not sure how Irene felt about it。 Yes, I received an Advanced Reader’s Copy which only guarantees I’ll read it and give my true and honest opinion。 See other reviews to verify that。 Yes, I loved it and read it twice before I posted this。 It was breathtaking and fast moving especially toward the end; I honestly had to go back to reread a couple of pages to see how we got to this new place。 It was stylish and stunning。 But the best part for me is that in the midst of it all I smiled at the quick sly humor and past references。 The goat, the Don, the Signadora, Julian and Oliver; they all return with a few words, and you feel it all again and smile at those memories。 。。。more

As always I was waiting with bated breath for the new Daniel Silva offering and devoured it in a few hectic sittings。 This one sees a massive change and switch of emphasis as after over 20 books, Gabriel Allon has retired from spying and running the “office” and is now simply an art restorer。 He becomes inveigled in a complex series of art related crimes involving a massive and lucrative forgery ring which is flooding and confusing the market with a series of faked old masters。 It is up to Allon As always I was waiting with bated breath for the new Daniel Silva offering and devoured it in a few hectic sittings。 This one sees a massive change and switch of emphasis as after over 20 books, Gabriel Allon has retired from spying and running the “office” and is now simply an art restorer。 He becomes inveigled in a complex series of art related crimes involving a massive and lucrative forgery ring which is flooding and confusing the market with a series of faked old masters。 It is up to Allon to sort the situation out and the restorer becomes a forger himself。 Aided and abetted by several of the old gang - but with one exception, none of his Israeli coterie he sets a trap and after much excitement, saves the day。 I enjoyed the book as usual。 How can you not given the quality of the writing and research, but I have to say I felt a bit bereft and missed the Israeli geo-political issues that normally fill his books。 A bit too much about art restoring and forgery? Perhaps, but I am fascinated to see where the series goes next。 。。。more
