Summary

The Killings at Badger's Drift is the first spectacular instalment in the Midsomer Murders series and the story that inspired the ITV hit drama, now featuring an exclusive foreword by John Nettles, who played best-loved TV detective and star of Midsomer Murders, DCI Tom Barnaby。

The village of Badger's Drift is the essence of tranquillity。 But when resident and well-loved spinster Miss Simpson takes a stroll in the nearby woods, she stumbles across something she was never meant to see, and there's only one way to keep her quiet。

Miss Simpson's death is not suspicious, say the villagers。 But Miss Lucy Bellringer refuses to rest: her friend has been murdered。 She is sure of it。

She calls on Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby to investigate, and it isn't long until the previously unseen seamy side of Badger's Drift is brought to light。 But as old rivalries, past loves and new scandals surface, the next murder is not far away。

Supposedly this book was the inspiration for the Midsummer Murder Series。

I’ll definitely be reading the rest of this series—very well written。

An absolutely riveting read。 Top-notch and terrific novel。

Linda

Looking forward to continuing the series and how Barnaby gets acclimated to the area。

A pleasant introduction to the place that the UK mystery series Midsomer Murders is set, this first book is undemanding, with an unusual motive for the first death。

DNF but that is all my fault and not the book's fault。 I'm too invested in the TV adaptation of the characters to do the read justice。 #firstworldproblems DNF but that is all my fault and not the book's fault。 I'm too invested in the TV adaptation of the characters to do the read justice。 #firstworldproblems 。。。more

A truly well-written detective novel, which involved me with its psychological insights, conquered me with its picturesque setting, fascinated me with its calm and insightful protagonist。 The only thing I'm sorry about this novel is that I was completely spoilered by the TV series, but I think that despite this I'll continue to read the next books because even if I knew everything, I liked very much the investigation and the mystery too。 A very beautiful reading! 。。。more

Although the plot is about the same as the tv adaptation, overall I think the story translates better on screen than in book format。 In the book, it's harder to keep the characters straight。 Although the plot is about the same as the tv adaptation, overall I think the story translates better on screen than in book format。 In the book, it's harder to keep the characters straight。 。。。more

If you love reading mysteries, hopefully you have come across Caroline Graham。 This is her first mystery featuring Inspector Barnaby and his sergeant Troy。 Bradger's Drift is a small village teeming with quite a few juicy secrets。 The plot is so twisty you might feel a little whiplash, but settle in and enjoy。 Oh, and her writing is a joy! Well, that was interesting。 The cover of my (variant) edition calls this “an English village whodunnit,” and one could believe that it’s the standard village mystery - anything but! This small English village contains more jealousy, hatred, bitterness, and nefarious doings than the average large city。 And that forms a large part of the charm here, the author’s excellent limning of those very people and their shady goings-on are quite delicious, and it must be said the plot is very well done, wit Well, that was interesting。 The cover of my (variant) edition calls this “an English village whodunnit,” and one could believe that it’s the standard village mystery - anything but! I can recommend this wholeheartedly。 This is the first of the (sadly, only seven) books that form the basis for the BBC series, Midsomer Murders。A real used bookstore find, I’ll be on the hunt for the others! 。。。more

I really liked it, I must admit though I was not first aware that this was the series that the TV series Midsomer Murders was based on。 But once realizing this I of course imagined Chief Inspector Barnaby and his family, as well as Troy in my minds eye to appear like the actors playing the characters in the Tv series。 I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series。 There were lots of well developed interesting characters living in Badgers Drift。

I've seen plenty of the tv episodes but this is my first Midsomer Murders book。 It was a kindle deal, and when John Nettles, Tom Barnaby himself, says the books are better than the tv series, what is there to lose?I certainly wasn't disappointed。 It's hard to review detective stories without giving something away to spoil it for the next reader, but I found this absorbing from beginning to end。 Fortunately, it's a long time since I saw the tv adaptation, so I couldn't remember how it ended! In the book, you certainly get a better feel for the inner life of the various characters than you do on screen。 Everyone in the tiny village has guilty secrets, but whose secret was so awful it required three people to die in order to keep it under wraps? You'll have to read it to find ouf。 。。。more

This is good! A cosy mystery that is actually really clever and goes to darker places than most similar novels。 Pretty easy listening but I did lose track of it at times (my bad, was doing other chores。) It felt like an escape into the fancy side of the English Midlands。I will say there’s some outdated ideas and stereotypes in here for sure, those could use an edit。 But yeah, solid, would recommend!

Excellent Book I have watched all 22 seasons of Midsummer Murders, and just loved the show, so I was stunned that it took me this long to find the books it was based off of。 Clever, dark, witty, sarcastic, and catchy…this book was amazing。 I can’t wait to read more of them。 5/5 stars

Love Inspector Barnaby!I watch all of his BBC shows and decided to read the books。 I wish Amazon would put more on their site and make them part of the free reading!Anyway, this one doesn’t disappoint and if you are interested you can easily learn new words that are disappearing from our language。

This took me multiple tries to sit down and read。 I didn't get hooked until mid way。 It's a good mystery for the genre, but for me it wasn't a hit。 This took me multiple tries to sit down and read。 I didn't get hooked until mid way。 It's a good mystery for the genre, but for me it wasn't a hit。 。。。more

They didn't have a listing for the audiobook that I listened to。 It's recently released and can be found on Audible with a foreword by John Nettles and excellent narration by John Hopkins (who played Scott on Midsomer)。 My husband and I are huge Midsomer fans, and this book was a treat, more complex than the episode, with excellent writing。 I would highly recommend this audiobook。 Apparently, Caroline Graham wrote seven Inspector Barnaby books, and it looks like this audio production team is goi They didn't have a listing for the audiobook that I listened to。 It's recently released and can be found on Audible with a foreword by John Nettles and excellent narration by John Hopkins (who played Scott on Midsomer)。 My husband and I are huge Midsomer fans, and this book was a treat, more complex than the episode, with excellent writing。 I would highly recommend this audiobook。 Apparently, Caroline Graham wrote seven Inspector Barnaby books, and it looks like this audio production team is going to release all seven books。 Book 2 comes out June 1st。 We can't wait! 。。。more

Proof that books are better than filmI enjoy "Midsomer Murders," watching the series again and again on Ovation and Britbox, so I decided to read the novels。 It is not that the book is better; it is complete。 This book provides the thoughts that DCI Barnaby conveys through his expressions and his breathing patterns。 I better understood the main victim in the episode because of the narrative。 When I watched "Badger's Drift" before reading the novel, I did not understand the nonverbal cues。 It was Proof that books are better than filmI enjoy "Midsomer Murders," watching the series again and again on Ovation and Britbox, so I decided to read the novels。 It is not that the book is better; it is complete。 This book provides the thoughts that DCI Barnaby conveys through his expressions and his breathing patterns。 I better understood the main victim in the episode because of the narrative。 When I watched "Badger's Drift" before reading the novel, I did not understand the nonverbal cues。 It was irksome to watch the old lady making facial contortions at the shop's beginning, but now I understand the thoughts behind those faces。I have to get busy reading the rest of Graham's books! 。。。more

I knew the solution to this mystery going in, as I'd watched this episode on the Midsomer Murders, the British drama series based, at least initially, on Caroline Graham's books。 Despite that fact, I enjoyed the book。 The writing is more than solid and the characters well-depicted and interesting。 I knew the solution to this mystery going in, as I'd watched this episode on the Midsomer Murders, the British drama series based, at least initially, on Caroline Graham's books。 Despite that fact, I enjoyed the book。 The writing is more than solid and the characters well-depicted and interesting。 。。。more
