Summary

When a dream trip becomes your worst nightmare…

You’ve been excited about this getaway for months – at last, a chance to reconnect with your husband at a secluded island resort。 But when he unexpectedly calls you from the beach, you hear the urgency in his voice。 Something is very wrong。

The beautiful waitress from the restaurant last night has been found lying dead in the sand。 And the police want to question your husband about it。

Sure, you saw him glance at her over dinner a few times, but you know he didn’t have anything to do with the poor girl’s death。 So why is he asking you to lie to the police that he was with you all night? And where did he go in those missing hours?

When he returns to your beautiful sea-view suite, things get heated and he accuses you of being jealous, just like he always does。 Yes, the waitress was overly flirtatious with your husband, but you didn’t actually wish her any harm。 Not really。

Can you trust the man you married… or are you the one who can’t be trusted?

I was gonna give 3 stars at first, but my gut is telling me 2。 I don’t know。 It was intriguing。 Sort of, maybe, kept my interest。 I wasn’t in a rush to get back to it when I put it down。 So much of it dragged。 I like a build up of suspense, but it took forever for things to come to light and when they did… it felt too fast, jumbled and fell pretty flat for me。 Not a single twist blew my mind。 Hardly felt twisty, more like trying quickly to tie loose ends so the story can wrap up。 I don’t feel th I was gonna give 3 stars at first, but my gut is telling me 2。 I don’t know。 It was intriguing。 Sort of, maybe, kept my interest。 I wasn’t in a rush to get back to it when I put it down。 So much of it dragged。 I like a build up of suspense, but it took forever for things to come to light and when they did… it felt too fast, jumbled and fell pretty flat for me。 Not a single twist blew my mind。 Hardly felt twisty, more like trying quickly to tie loose ends so the story can wrap up。 I don’t feel that satisfied, electric excitement that comes with the rollercoaster of a good 5 star thriller。 Someone who doesn’t read many thrillers would probably find this one to be GREAT, but I’ve read plenty (many at resorts or islands just like this one) and this was amateur。 One big MEH from me。 I didn’t really care for any of the characters, found it to be a hassle to keep track of them。 The whole book was a miss。 Didn’t love it, I don’t even think I liked it。 。。。more

Hmm, how to rate a book where the plot is well done but the characters are often infuriating? In this book about three couples and a disastrous time at a fancy resort, the three men are jerks in different ways and varying degrees, and the women are too often weak and make terrible choices。Another thing that bugged me was how often one of the women would seem to have reached a decision and then, next thing you know, all that is forgotten and we’re straight back to the same dysfunctional dynamic。M Hmm, how to rate a book where the plot is well done but the characters are often infuriating? The Resort was sort of in the middle for me, not great but not bad。 Dreadful characters abound for the most part, especially the men, and the women were all a bit flaky。 Something was off about this book but I'm not sure what it was, it just seemed a bit flat and a bit shallow to me, although I seem to be very much in the minority with that opinion。3 StarsThanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC。 The Resort was sort of in the middle for me, not great but not bad。 Dreadful characters abound for the most part, especially the men, and the women were all a bit flaky。 Something was off about this book but I'm not sure what it was, it just seemed a bit flat and a bit shallow to me, although I seem to be very much in the minority with that opinion。3 StarsThanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC。 。。。more

I previously read "The Forever Home" by the same author and I must say, I liked "The Resort" better。。。however, it looks like the one husband in this book (The newlywed one), could have been either the same or a brother of the husband from "The Forever Home"。。。But let's come to THIS review, not the previous one !So we have a posh hotel originally built in the 1920's, that is built on its own island - and we get to know 2 couples at the end of their 30's, and 1 couple at the beginning of their 40' I previously read "The Forever Home" by the same author and I must say, I liked "The Resort" better。。。however, it looks like the one husband in this book (The newlywed one), could have been either the same or a brother of the husband from "The Forever Home"。。。But let's come to THIS review, not the previous one !So we have a posh hotel originally built in the 1920's, that is built on its own island - and we get to know 2 couples at the end of their 30's, and 1 couple at the beginning of their 40's that are vacationing there:The Newly Weds, that are staying in the hotel for their honeymoon (where there had been a double death in their honeymoon suite years before)。Then there's the "well-off" couple, that have come to this holiday resort to mourn the death of the baby, that was never born - and to resolve their marital issues by looking forward on how to live their childless future。We also get to know the third couple:They are the oldest ones, just starting their 40's and celebrating their 20th anniversary。The couples do not know each other - yet - but after two of the wives go for a short walk by the sea, they discover a very beautiful, very young, and very dead woman from the hotel staff。。。and things change quickly:Everyone has their own dubious pasts and secrets, ergo everyone becomes a suspect。The couples are also not as clear-cut, as one may think: The Honeymooners have a rather poisonous relationship, especially since the new husband is actually a selfish, arrogant prick, that enjoys mentally torturing his bride。The "well off" couple are in love with another, but somehow do not know how to make the best of their relationship, because they lost their unborn baby and their grief about it is almost unbearable。And the 20th anniversary couple are suffering both with the wife constantly being "taken tenderly care of" by her husband, but also constantly feeling controlled - and the husband trying to escape reality by going running/jogging for a supposedly charitable cause。But hold on:Not just the murder, but also the fear of the murderer seem to connect the 3 couples - especially the wives。The women seem to connect better with another then the men - the husbands are very different characters and again - everyone is a suspect, which includes the wives。 And then, there's another death。。。Sue Watson keeps the suspense until the end, and you will not believe, what is going on about the deaths, and the "who dunnit"-part will be extremely surprising。 I did not see THAT ENDING coming at all !Please pick up a copy of this book - you won't regret it, that's for sure ! 。。。more

Cue the jealousy! When Stella's body is washed up on the beach the next day, everyone is under suspicion。 Who would want her dead, and why? The police are called in and everyone is told to stay put on the Island。 Nobody can leave until the police have investigated further and questioned everybody。 A couple of days later, Daisy is attacked but managed to get away。 Are the two incidents connected in any way? The three couples become friends,  especially the women。  They share their secrets and troubles within their marriages。 But they all suspect each others husbands or maybe even their own!Written from the point of view mainly from the three wives in fairly short chapters。 This made me page turn even quicker to get to the next chapter。 Plenty of red herrings。 I suspected several different characters but there are some really unlikable ones so it wasn't difficult! I read this in one day as I was eager to discover what happened。 This is all tied up perfectly in the epilogue。If you haven't read anything by Sue before then I can highly recommend her thrillers。 。。。more

Three couples all vacationing at a swanky island resort。 Each with their own troubles。 They all come together as vacation friends with the wives doing the real bonding。 FYI there isn’t really a like-able guy on the island。 I enjoy Sue Watson and her twisty tales。 This one didn’t disappoint。

Thanks to netgally and bookouture for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book was a great fast read, I love a good mystery where there are multiple people involved and you have to keep guessing, I loved how each couple was so different, yet each had their own struggles, it really added depth to the characters。 Just when you think you have it all figured out the ending blows everything out of the water, a must read!

‘Your Dream Getaway Or Your Worse Nightmare?’ - cover tag line。My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Resort’ by Sue Watson。 I have read a number of Watson’s novels and so was confident that ‘The Resort’ would prove an engaging mystery。Just a few plot details。 After an intriguing Prologue we travel back three weeks and are introduced to three couples that are holidaying at Fitzgerald’s, a famous 1920s Art Deco hotel, located on a small island off the coast of Devon。 The hotel ‘Your Dream Getaway Or Your Worse Nightmare?’ - cover tag line。My thanks to Bookouture for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘The Resort’ by Sue Watson。 I have read a number of Watson’s novels and so was confident that ‘The Resort’ would prove an engaging mystery。Just a few plot details。 After an intriguing Prologue we travel back three weeks and are introduced to three couples that are holidaying at Fitzgerald’s, a famous 1920s Art Deco hotel, located on a small island off the coast of Devon。 The hotel has a dark history that adds to its appeal。Samantha and David are on their honeymoon following a whirlwind courtship。 Glamorous Daisy has a high flying career in fashion and is married to Tom。 They are still coming to terms with a devastating loss。 Finally, Becky and Josh are married with two teenage children back home。 Yet Josh seems obsessed with going running and Becky notices that he is flirting with Stella, a beautiful young waitress。 Then a body turns up on the beach and the police order all guests to remain on the island while they investigate。 While a luxury island hotel isn’t the worst place to be stuck, tensions still rise。 No further details to avoid spoilers。 Watson moves the narrative viewpoint between the couples and we learn about their various relationship dynamics and their backstories。 In addition, during the holiday new bonds are forged。 I was pleased to discover that Fitzgerald’s was based on a real Art Deco hotel, Burgh Island, that like its fictional counterpart has a rich history。 Overall, I found ‘The Resort’ a compelling and entertaining whodunnit set in a fabulous location。 A great summer read。 。。。more

I got very heated the way David would say things to Sam and I’m telling you I would not take that shit no way, no how! The ultimate ending was a real surprise! Didn’t see that one coming! Well executed Watson! Overall, it’s an entertaining, easy read and perfect for summer escapism。𝐓𝐖: 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐠𝐞, 𝐑𝐚𝐩𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 。。。more

Her characters are the right mix of good and bad – we know they’re all hiding something, but it just depends on how much each one is willing to share, when they’ll do it, how they’ll do it, and at whose expense? The strategic game is always being cleverly played! This is a 5 star read! Highly recommended。 。。。more
