Summary

Achilles, "the best of all the Greeks," son of the cruel sea goddess Thetis and the legendary king Peleus, is strong, swift, and beautiful, irresistible to all who meet him。 Patroclus is an awkward young prince, exiled from his homeland after an act of shocking violence。 Brought together by chance, they forge an inseparable bond, despite risking the gods' wrath。

They are trained by the centaur Chiron in the arts of war and medicine, but when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, all the heroes of Greece are called upon to lay siege to Troy in her name。 Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause, and torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus follows。 Little do they know that the cruel Fates will test them both as never before and demand a terrible sacrifice。

Absolutely wonderful from beginning to end!

I'm now committed to reading any novel that Madeline Miller writes。 She tells this romantic, tragic story in the most ageless and elegant way。"In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk。 Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun。" I'm now committed to reading any novel that Madeline Miller writes。 She tells this romantic, tragic story in the most ageless and elegant way。"In the darkness, two shadows, reaching through the hopeless, heavy dusk。 Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun。" 。。。more

I loved this book, however I think it was hyped up too much as a book that will make you cry your heart out, personally that wasn’t the case for me- at one point my eyes were watery。It’s a beautifully written retelling of Greek mythology with a twist of mlm , overall I recommend this book

A stunning retelling of The Illiad! I particularly love Miller's commitment to Camp: this book stands as a great star within the pantheon of queer literature。 And adaptation literature besides! Of course Miller takes some liberties in modifying her source to suit a 369 page novel, and to amplify themes she sees as most salient—homosocial bonds, same-sex desire, the hubris of legends, the pain of grandeur—but these changes were welcome and did the source enough respect。 Homer would blush!Absolute A stunning retelling of The Illiad! This was so fucking beautiful。 The story, the writing, the romance - everything。 I won't stop recommending this。”Your honour could be darkened by it。”“Then it is darkened。” His jaw shot forward, stubborn。 “They are fools if they let my glory rise or fall on this。”“But Odysseus –“His eyes, green as spring leaves, met mine。 “Patroclus。 I have given enough to them。 I will not give them this。”Even though I don't know masses about Greek mythology, I found this quite simple to follow as each character This was so fucking beautiful。 The story, the writing, the romance - everything。 I won't stop recommending this。”Your honour could be darkened by it。”“Then it is darkened。” His jaw shot forward, stubborn。 “They are fools if they let my glory rise or fall on this。”“But Odysseus –“His eyes, green as spring leaves, met mine。 “Patroclus。 I have given enough to them。 I will not give them this。”Even though I don't know masses about Greek mythology, I found this quite simple to follow as each characters backstory was explained - so don't be put off if you haven't even heard the name Achilles before。 This is definitely going to be one of those books that stays constantly on my mind and I won't shut up about (sorry to all my friends in advance)。Overall I really, really recommend reading this if you get the chance。 I promise the pain and the tears are worth it - the ending will break you in the best way possible。 。。。more

I can’t stop crying。 It hurts so bad。 I adore this book。 I’m a huge classics fan so this was very satisfying in that aspect, but the way she writes Patroclus and changes the writing style! So good。 The ending nearly killed me。 PLEASE READ

I find many parallels in this retelling of a Greek myth with that of MT Vasudevan Nair's Bhima。 Working within the constraints of a well known myth, the writers create a dazzling, new perspective that humanizes these mythical, millennia-old characters making them relatable, understandable to a 21st century reader。 I find many parallels in this retelling of a Greek myth with that of MT Vasudevan Nair's Bhima。 Working within the constraints of a well known myth, the writers create a dazzling, new perspective that humanizes these mythical, millennia-old characters making them relatable, understandable to a 21st century reader。 。。。more

My heart aches。 I cannot express how deeply this story made me feel and how impressive, raw and beautiful the prose is。 Absolutely fantastic; I don't know how to express what a masterpiece this is, especially since I just finished this book and am really overwhelmed。 I want to read it again and again but I don't think I could handle experiencing it again。Madeline Miller is definitely my favorite author, especially concerning prose。 Her narrative voice is incredible and cannot be matched。 This no My heart aches。 I cannot express how deeply this story made me feel and how impressive, raw and beautiful the prose is。 Absolutely fantastic; I don't know how to express what a masterpiece this is, especially since I just finished this book and am really overwhelmed。 I want to read it again and again but I don't think I could handle experiencing it again。Madeline Miller is definitely my favorite author, especially concerning prose。 Her narrative voice is incredible and cannot be matched。 This novel will stay with me forever, I think。 。。。more

A beautiful read。 The Song of Achilles is both diverse in its characters and its story。 While it is loosely based on the Iliad, Miller's depiction will give you everything you need and more。 This is one of those novels I wish I could re-read for the first time (to the extent that I attempted to pace myself in my reading to prohibit it from ending)。 Madeline Miller provides a face-paced, never-a-dull-moment story that does nothing short of warming the heart。 A beautiful read。 The Song of Achilles is both diverse in its characters and its story。 While it is loosely based on the Iliad, Miller's depiction will give you everything you need and more。 This is one of those novels I wish I could re-read for the first time (to the extent that I attempted to pace myself in my reading to prohibit it from ending)。 Madeline Miller provides a face-paced, never-a-dull-moment story that does nothing short of warming the heart。 。。。more

Honestly amazing but, a bit too romantic for my taste。 I still appreciate it though because she wrote the story as it was intended。 Which I’m pretty sure everyone else who takes in this tale is to cowardly to do。

My taste in books is becoming masochistic。。。I loved Patroclus, and I loved Achilles through the eyes of Patroclus。

i mean, what is there left to be said that hasn’t already been said?this book is pure perfection。 the relationship between achilles and patroclus was beauty personified。 it was poetic from start to end。 it was full of love and honesty and purity。 balance and kindness in life and in death。the storytelling, the action, the love, the mythology, the history。 all of it was beautifully spun and ravishing to devour。read this book。 need i say a thing more?

Alix Lorsignol

I liked this book but I might had some high expectations from the start which leads me to not enjoying it as much as I thought I would。 I had difficulties to connect with the two main characters。 But the end is beautifully written and I still am happy that I read it。
