Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends。 The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer。 Khalil was unarmed。

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline。 Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger。 Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name。 Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family。 What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr。

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community。 It could also endanger her life。

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give。

It is commonly recommended to "walk a mile in their shoes"。 This resonated with me throughout this important read。 While there are things I have not experienced and likely will not experience as a white woman, this book allows you to walk in Starr's shoes as she displays horrifying realities faced by Americans everyday。 The uncensored, raw, and real emotion this book displays is so important。 Thomas is able to give a glimpse to every reader。 Truly impactful truly important。 While it is a definit It is commonly recommended to "walk a mile in their shoes"。 This resonated with me throughout this important read。 While there are things I have not experienced and likely will not experience as a white woman, this book allows you to walk in Starr's shoes as she displays horrifying realities faced by Americans everyday。 The uncensored, raw, and real emotion this book displays is so important。 Thomas is able to give a glimpse to every reader。 Truly impactful truly important。 While it is a definitive YA novel, the themes and storytelling are so important for all。 。。。more

TRES GROSSE PÉPITE EN VUE ! J'avais déjà lu des livres sur plein de sujets, mais jamais sur les violences policières ! I put off reading this book for years because it seemed so mainstream, but I regret not reading it sooner。 The writing and plot are so realistic that I kept having to put the book down。 I definitely reconnected。

This book isn't really my genre, but it was so good。 It made me think about so many different equality issues in our society and police force。 When I was reading this book, I thought more about situations where a black person was killed and instead of holding the officer accountable, everyone focused on the victims' negative qualities, giving an excuse for why it's okay that the person is dead。 A quote that stood out to me is “‘Brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared, Starr,’ she says。 ‘It means yo This book isn't really my genre, but it was so good。 It made me think about so many different equality issues in our society and police force。 When I was reading this book, I thought more about situations where a black person was killed and instead of holding the officer accountable, everyone focused on the victims' negative qualities, giving an excuse for why it's okay that the person is dead。 A quote that stood out to me is “‘Brave doesn’t mean you’re not scared, Starr,’ she says。 ‘It means you go on even though you’re scared。 And you’re doing that。’” I liked this quote because, throughout the book, Starr kept getting told that she was brave even though she never felt it herself until her mom said this and she finally understood the meaning behind being brave。 。。。more

I had to read the hate u give for school this year and let me tell u, this is by far the best book i had to read for school。 Although the plot, characters, and setting made this an amazing book, the part of it that really stood out to me was the message the author was trying to get to us。 That the hate u give little infants fucks everybody meaning what society gives us when we are young, bites them back in the ass when we are older。 And although this book is categorized under fiction, it depicts I had to read the hate u give for school this year and let me tell u, this is by far the best book i had to read for school。 Although the plot, characters, and setting made this an amazing book, the part of it that really stood out to me was the message the author was trying to get to us。 That the hate u give little infants fucks everybody meaning what society gives us when we are young, bites them back in the ass when we are older。 And although this book is categorized under fiction, it depicts our society today so vividly and truthfully that i wouldn’t be surprised if it was categorized as nonfiction。 So, don’t wait。 READ THIS BOOK!! 。。。more

I really like this book because I was hooked from the very first chapter。 There were very few times I was confused。 This book makes you feel many emotions I just wish some scenes that were in movie were in the book (I know the book came before the film btw) such as the hairbrush scene at school between Starr and Hailey。

This book was really good, and it explored many relationships really well。 It also showcased the issue of racism perfectly。

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas was one of the harder books I read this year。 As the book talks about a lot of gang violence and racially targeted indivuals its really hard to not get a little teary eyed at the fact it could be me。 In the book a young 16 year old black male-Khalil was shot because of the color of his skin。 It was hard to read because it could happen in real life and it does happen in real life。 Its hard to read a book about your own race that is getting targeted but its such a b The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas was one of the harder books I read this year。 As the book talks about a lot of gang violence and racially targeted indivuals its really hard to not get a little teary eyed at the fact it could be me。 In the book a young 16 year old black male-Khalil was shot because of the color of his skin。 It was hard to read because it could happen in real life and it does happen in real life。 Its hard to read a book about your own race that is getting targeted but its such a beautiful book in the end。 。。。more

Truly one of the best books I’ve ever read。 Such a great example of standing up against racism and injustice with black people。 The main character Starr, is such a strong individual and I live for that。 I’m not done reading this book yet, but already is one of my favorite books。

Wow!I couldn't put this book down。 I devoured the story while actually getting more of an understanding of what Black Lives Matter really means。Angie Thomas does this through 16-year-old Starr Carter who finds herself being two different Starrs depending if she is at home in the poor black neighbourhood she lives in (don't call it ghetto), or one of two black students at her suburban prep school。Starr's life is rich in love, if complicated。 Her family is wonderful, her friends are cool, but she Wow!I couldn't put this book down。 I devoured the story while actually getting more of an understanding of what Black Lives Matter really means。Angie Thomas does this through 16-year-old Starr Carter who finds herself being two different Starrs depending if she is at home in the poor black neighbourhood she lives in (don't call it ghetto), or one of two black students at her suburban prep school。Starr's life is rich in love, if complicated。 Her family is wonderful, her friends are cool, but she has a hard time getting her two lives to come together。 The more I got to know Starr, the better I liked her。 The tragedies she has witnessed would make anyone fearful。 In similar circumstances, I might hide out forever。But when Starr finally finds her voice, she really becomes a star! I loved the way this tale was told, the message it holds and especially the lasting impact it will have on me!Brilliant! 。。。more
