Summary

The New York Times bestselling author of The Vacationers and All Adults Here combines her trademark charm and wit with a moving father-daughter story, and a playful twist on the idea of time travel。

What if you could take a vacation to your past?

On the eve of her 40th birthday, Alice’s life isn’t terrible。 She likes her job, even if it isn’t exactly the one she expected。 She’s happy with her apartment, her romantic status, her independence, and she adores her lifelong best friend。 But something is missing。 Her father, the single parent who raised her, is ailing and out of reach。 How did they get here so fast? Did she take too much for granted along the way?

When Alice wakes up the next morning somehow back in 1996, it isn’t her 16-year-old body that is the biggest shock, or the possibility of romance with her adolescent crush, it’s her dad: the vital, charming, 49-year-old version of her father with whom she is reunited。 Now armed with a new perspective on her own life and his, is there anything that she should do differently this time around? What would she change, given the chance?

With her celebrated humor, insight, and heart, Emma Straub cleverly turns all the traditional time travel tropes on their head and delivers a different kind of love story – about the lifelong, reverberating relationship between a parent and child。

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。This is about Alice on the eve of her 40th birthday。 Her father is dying, and the rest of her life isn’t going as planned either。。 The next morning she wakes up to find a much younger and fitter version of her father and that it is her 16th birthday。 Alice takes the opportunity to spend more time with her father getting to know him from the prospective of her 40 year old self。 She also tries to do what she can to preve I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。This is about Alice on the eve of her 40th birthday。 Her father is dying, and the rest of her life isn’t going as planned either。。 The next morning she wakes up to find a much younger and fitter version of her father and that it is her 16th birthday。 Alice takes the opportunity to spend more time with her father getting to know him from the prospective of her 40 year old self。 She also tries to do what she can to prevent him getting ill in the future。 I usually love books that involve time travel but I found this book quite slow。 I really wanted to love it but it didn’t do anything new and I wasn’t really invested in any of the characters。 I can see what the author was trying to do with this book but in my opinion didn’t quite pull it off。 。。。more

If you enjoyed Oona Out of Order, you'll love this one because it's almost the same story。 I will say I enjoyed the writing itself more than Oona。。。it seemed to flow more easily but overall I just felt like I'd already read this book。Thanks to PRH Audio for access to this audiobook in advance。 My thoughts are my own。 If you enjoyed Oona Out of Order, you'll love this one because it's almost the same story。 I will say I enjoyed the writing itself more than Oona。。。it seemed to flow more easily but overall I just felt like I'd already read this book。Thanks to PRH Audio for access to this audiobook in advance。 My thoughts are my own。 。。。more

t’s Alice’s 40th birthday, but when she wakes up, she’s at her 16th birthday party。 In her current day life, her father is dying, so she uses this chance to go back in time to help change the future and try to avoid her father getting sick。 Unfortunately, I wanted to like this one more than I did - It plays on the trope of time travel and the chance to see how your life would play out if you made different decisions, which is usually 100% my shit (loved the book The Midnight Library for this, ob t’s Alice’s 40th birthday, but when she wakes up, she’s at her 16th birthday party。 In her current day life, her father is dying, so she uses this chance to go back in time to help change the future and try to avoid her father getting sick。 Unfortunately, I wanted to like this one more than I did - It plays on the trope of time travel and the chance to see how your life would play out if you made different decisions, which is usually 100% my shit (loved the book The Midnight Library for this, obsessed with the movie About Time)。 However, this one just felt really low stakes and the whole time I just couldn’t really get into the plot or feel a close connection to the main character。 Early reviews for this are seemingly really positive though, so it could definitely just being a case of this author not being for me! I ABSOLUTELY loved this one!! In my opinion, it's the best Emma Straub book yet。 A quick, feel-good read you won't be able to put down。 This book gave me all the feels as Alice is dealing with her emotions about turning 40 and her father's failing health。 Then in a reverse 13 going on 30 type scenario, she flashes back in time to her 16th birthday party and the fun really begins。 The father-daughter relationship in this book was everything for me。 I couldn't get enough。 Perfect for fans of The t I ABSOLUTELY loved this one!! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review。I am not a fan of this type of genre。 Time travel gives me the Freaky Friday vibe of my teens。 :(

I really enjoyed Emma Straub’s book。 I got completely sucked in to Alice’s world, which says something about the writing, which I thought was excellent。 The pacing was good and the issues ones that most of us could identify with…what different choices might I have made and what would that mean for my life today。 The time travel was an effective mechanism for exploring those choices…。without being too jarring and unrealistic…and based on the life story of her father。 This was a fun book to read。

I’ve loved Straub’s books over the years, but this one might be her best yet。 Focusing on a father-daughter relationship, but also a woman in her 40s looking back on her life, this struck all sorts of chords。 Plus, I love a little bit of time travel。 (And Marin Ireland might be my favorite narrator。) For fans of Oona Out of Order and The Midnight Library。Thank you to Riverhead and Netgalley for providing me with a free review copy。 All opinions are my own。

Thank you Riverhead Books, Netgalley & Emma Straub for sending me this advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review。 I think Emily Henry said it best with her review: "this book has you turning pages and setting it down so you can call the people you love。"I've never read one of Emma Straub's books but I think this was the one that convinced me to try another one of her novels。 things i liked - I'm a big fan of time travel stories。 I felt like this novel was a combination of Time Trave Thank you Riverhead Books, Netgalley & Emma Straub for sending me this advanced copy in exchange for a fair and honest review。 I think Emily Henry said it best with her review: "this book has you turning pages and setting it down so you can call the people you love。"I've never read one of Emma Straub's books but I think this was the one that convinced me to try another one of her novels。 things i liked - I'm a big fan of time travel stories。 I felt like this novel was a combination of Time Traveler's Wife and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue。- I absolutely ADORED Alice's relationship with her father。 I loved how Leonard was portrayed as a flawed dad who loved his daughter so much and was trying to do the best he could。 - The nods to all the time travel movies (shout out 13 Going on 30 & Freaky Friday)- The ending。 I flew through the last 100 pages。 I felt like the story was wrapped up perfectly。 It'll have you in your feels。not so much- The very beginning felt rushed。 In the opening, Alice's character felt unrealistic in the sense things were happening really fast。 - The time traveling aspect did make it hard to really get to know other important characters in the book。 There were a few I would have loved to have seen developed a little bit more。 。。。more
