Summary

"Sometimes I think about how much bad news there is to tell my kid, the endlessly long, looping CVS receipt scroll of truly terrible things that have happened, and I want to get under the bed and never come out。 How do we tell them about all this? Can we just play Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire and then brace for questions? The first of which should be, how is this a song that played on the radio?"

In New York Times bestselling author and Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Jessi Klein's second collection, she hilariously explodes the cultural myths and impossible expectations around motherhood and explore the humiliations, poignancies, and possibilities of midlife。

In interconnected essays like "Listening to Beyonce in the Parking Lot of Party City," "Your Husband Will Remarry Five Minutes After You Die," "Eulogy for My Feet," and "An Open Love Letter to Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent," Klein explores this stage of life in all its cruel ironies, joyous moments, and bittersweetness。

Written with Klein's signature candor and humanity, I'll Show Myself Out is an incisive, moving, and often uproarious collection。

Jessi Klein is an incredible writer。 You’ll Grow Out of It is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read。 This was very different, diving mostly into motherhood。 It had a darker tone, but still light and heartwarming elements。

Laura Jane

I read this around Mother’s Day, and as the parent of a toddler and baby I found this hilarious and spot on。 Irreverent and real。 Can we be friends?

Riva Sciuto

3。5 stars! She is so funny。

Kelly Pulis

I did not connect with her on motherhood so this book not as great as her first, but I still loved listening to her voice。

4 stars for raw, unpleasant honesty。 The majority of mothers don't experience the assistance of a night nurse and nanny, so imagine how much MORE overwhelmed and stressed mothers are overall。 As long as you label this Jessi Klein's experience and not representative as "all mothers" it's worth the read! 。。。more

Such a funny, relatable book to read Mother’s Day weekend。 It made me laugh。 It made me feel normal。 It made me feel not alone in motherhood。

What a brilliant, hilarious and honest book。 It felt like that warm hug and a big glass of wine that every new mom needs :)

I LOVED her first book so as soon as I heard she had another I knew I would read it。 That said, it’s essays on motherhood, and as someone who’s not a parent, I wasn’t able to partake in the hilarious “I feel seen!” moments as a reader。 If you are a mom, this is probably great!

Snarky mom memoir that I needed to read。 I especially liked the last chapter describing how her mental capacity has been reduced to a tenement studio and how being a mom helped her not care as much about things because she doesn't have time to anymore。 The chapter on clothing is also spot on。 Snarky mom memoir that I needed to read。 I especially liked the last chapter describing how her mental capacity has been reduced to a tenement studio and how being a mom helped her not care as much about things because she doesn't have time to anymore。 The chapter on clothing is also spot on。 。。。more

I really loved this and I'm glad I listened to it, even though I'm not a mom and motherhood was in the title。 Klein's book, You'll Grow Out of It, was one of my favorite funny reads so I knew this would be funny and substantial, even if I didn't totally relate to it。 The cool thing about Klein's writing is that you don't really have to be going through what she's dealing with to enjoy it。 She has a way of making everyday things feel truly deep and philosophical, and dare I say--sweetly hopeful。 I really loved this and I'm glad I listened to it, even though I'm not a mom and motherhood was in the title。 Klein's book, You'll Grow Out of It, was one of my favorite funny reads so I knew this would be funny and substantial, even if I didn't totally relate to it。 The cool thing about Klein's writing is that you don't really have to be going through what she's dealing with to enjoy it。 She has a way of making everyday things feel truly deep and philosophical, and dare I say--sweetly hopeful。 I wish I was her best friend。 I feel like I relate more to this author that pretty much anyone else, ever。 You don't have to be a mom to love this book。 。。。more

Relatable and funny。 Some of the essays included far too much TMI, but for the most part, I liked the book。 Fun easy listen while doing chores。

I love Jesse Klein。 I would read anything she wrote。 I loved hearing about her experience with motherhood because she is so honest and vulnerable。 Reading this book also definitely affirmed my current desire/plans to remain child free。 And absolutely reaffirms my belief in bodily autonomy and access to reproductive healthcare for all! Abortion is a fundamental human right! (not the point of the book, but after this week it had to be said!! Fuck Justice Alito!!!!)

A funny collection of essays about middle age and motherhood that were utterly relatable and easy to listen to narrated by the author on audio。 A sketch comedy writer for SNL (among other things), the author shares stories about body image, self-love (even when your hair is falling out) and trying (and failing) to do it all as a working mother。 Worth a listen if you enjoy motherhood memoirs told with humor and heart。

I laughed。 I cried。 I felt so seen! I read this just after my son turned one and felt so grateful for an essay collection that felt so real。

Five out of five Nom-Noms! The essays are as moving as they are hilarious and mostly center on motherhood and womanhood in your 40s。 I listened to the audiobook read by the author and highly recommend it, I think hearing the stories in Jessi’s voice enhances the reading/listening experience。 “An Open Love Letter to Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent” had me cracking up。 I recommend this to anyone looking for funny mediations on being a “middle-aged” woman and honest reflections on the highs and lows Five out of five Nom-Noms! Really enjoyed this! A lot of stories about motherhood which were honest and hilarious。 Each chapter is a new essay/story。 Easy enjoyable read。

Even as a person who is not a mom, Jessi Klein was able to make that experience come across in her essays。 I love how this woman writes。

Jessica Rouser

Perfect for someone who knows she is going to have issues adjusting to motherhood, regardless of how much I am going to love this little human。

Erin

I loved loved loved “You’ll Grow Out of It” and have had this puppy pre-ordered since I heard of its release。 As a toddler mother myself, I related to so many of these essays。 Jessi takes us through many complex and often vulnerable emotions。 Needless to say, it is not quite as laugh out loud funny as her previous book。 Rather, it feels like you’re lost in conversation with a dear friend。 I would/will follow Jessi to the ends of the earth。

Alexandra

It’s uneven but the highs are high。 Finished this (approx???) a week before our son was born, hence commencing another hero’s journey and want to keep that paradigm with me in the months ahead。

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of essays by Jessi Klein。 We're right around the same age, so a lot of what she wrote about felt extremely relevant to me, and she is HILARIOUS。 A few essays really stood out for me: Bad News, In Defense of Drinking, The Car Seat, and My Future Lesbian Wife。But "Underwear Sandwich" was my absolute favorite and should be required reading for anyone who is pregnant or will ever think about maybe becoming pregnant or impregnating someone。 "。。。even though I never I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of essays by Jessi Klein。 We're right around the same age, so a lot of what she wrote about felt extremely relevant to me, and she is HILARIOUS。 A few essays really stood out for me: Bad News, In Defense of Drinking, The Car Seat, and My Future Lesbian Wife。But "Underwear Sandwich" was my absolute favorite and should be required reading for anyone who is pregnant or will ever think about maybe becoming pregnant or impregnating someone。 "。。。even though I never heard a whisper about the brass tack details of what happens to the female body during and after birth, I know for certain I was taught MULTIPLE times over, in different health classes throughout NYC public junior high and high school, that boys have "nocturnal emissions"。。。 but why did I need to know this? Why did I, a teenage girl, need to be instructed REPEATEDLY that teenage boys have fantastically vivid sex dreams that end with them [redacted] in their sheets。。。 and yet none of us needed to learn about the details of birth that bring us into this world? Why is so much of this knowledge made to feel like a dirty secret that can only be unearthed at the exact moment it's needed?"YES。 WHY?!?!?! Not a single person told me anything about what would happen to my body and my emotions after I had my first kid -- I was given instructions about what to do with the baby (kind of), but absolutely zero information about the physical and emotional horrorshow that is the aftermath of birth。 Yes it's gross and awful and not fun to read about (though arguably less gross and more relevant than reading about what's going on with teenage boys and their boners), but literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON EVER BORN came from a woman's body in one way or another, so maybe share that information somewhere along the way?! aagh。 fucking patriarchy。Anyway, this was a great essay collection that made me laugh a lot and get a little teary-eyed a few times。 Read it。* thank you to Harper for the NetGalley review copy。 The quote was taken from an uncorrected proof and may change prior to publication (but I hope it doesn't)。 I'll Show Myself Out publishes April 26th! 。。。more

This is exactly the kind of book I yearned to read in early motherhood。 I felt really seen as I read Klein’s Starbucks bathroom essay… and the car seat one… and Halloween… and little books。 For as much as I loved the content, I found myself doing a million things other than finish it (many of those things motherhood or middle aged related that maybe I should write my own essays about)。

Jen

Love her voice。
