Summary

An abandoned child becomes a singular inspiration to the mythology of Muirwood in an epic series by Jeff Wheeler, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Muirwood and Kingfountain novels。

Eilean was born a “wretched”—a lowly foundling raised by the Aldermaston of Tintern Abbey。 Then she’s chosen to assist in establishing the new abbey of Muirwood, now the site of a castle in the swamps of Bearden Muir。 Eilean’s role is as night servant to the druid Mordaunt, the king’s exiled advisor—and prisoner。 He’s clever, dangerous, and invaluable to the Aldermaston。

Mordaunt’s priceless secret: the hiding place of an ancient tome that reveals the existence of other worlds and the magic between them。 Mordaunt knows how potent its words are and how dangerous they could be in the wrong hands。 But can Eilean win him over? All she must do is gain Mordaunt’s confidence and trust and persuade the apostate to divulge his secret to her。 But as she learns more from Mordaunt, Eilean’s loyalties begin to fray。 And the risks are greater than she imagined。

Despite betrayals, deceptions, and the deadly motivations of others, a girl from the flax fields is about to rise above her station。 By exploring the potential of the power of an ancient spoken magic, Eilean is coming into her own。

can’t wait for the next book in the seriesI love Jeff Wheeler’s books。 I rush to grab them the day they’re released。 This book did not disappoint。 Seems like The Druid will be a “beginning” book that seems to have happened before the Luther muirwood books。 I devoured this book and am glad Wheeler is a fast writer and will have the next out soon!

Fantastic sword and sorcery。 This book is setting up for a larger story, but the initial promise of this novel was satisfied, so it didn't feel like a cliffhanger。 However, I'm very excited to see what Eilean, the protagonist, does next。 In the beginning, the protag is a sensitive introvert。 I generally like more bold characters, but I found myself rooting for her。This has a religious core as it's focused on druids vs。 aldermastons。 I enjoyed it, but if you don't like stories where the character Fantastic sword and sorcery。 This book is setting up for a larger story, but the initial promise of this novel was satisfied, so it didn't feel like a cliffhanger。 However, I'm very excited to see what Eilean, the protagonist, does next。 In the beginning, the protag is a sensitive introvert。 I generally like more bold characters, but I found myself rooting for her。This has a religious core as it's focused on druids vs。 aldermastons。 I enjoyed it, but if you don't like stories where the character is being guided by whispers from "the medium," this isn't the book for you。 Most of the characters we've read about, like in QUEENS POISONER have occasional whispers, but Eilean hears them often, setting her up as a relatively powerful character in comparison to some of those in past books。 Speaking of past books, this one is a prequel and can actually be read first without any knowledge of the world。 I appreciated this as I haven't read all the Muirwood books, and I read them many years ago。 Information you know about the world will only add to the experience of this novel but isn't necessary。I always enjoy the gray characters, and this story has a bunch。 Plus, the true motives and personalities of the characters are revealed as the story progresses, which I always like。 The reader isn't sure who to trust for a while, which I also liked。I was up WAY too late reading this story。 I thought about it constantly when I wasn't reading it, which is a sign of how much I was enjoying it as I read it。 It's one of those stories that as I was getting to the end, I was dreading it because I wanted more。 I'm looking forward to book 2! 。。。more

SpellbindingI had trouble putting this book aside。 The story, the style, the characters all come together in a fast paced fashion that left me almost exhausted。 At the same time, I could hardly wait for whatever was coming next。 Book 2 better not disappoint; I'd never recover from the experience if it did! I'm just。。。not sure。 The book started out slightly irritating because it's a simplified female character who seems more like a caricature of herself。 (A bit ditzy, a bit helpless)。 Then it picks up a bit and gets interesting, and I think I made it 70% of the way through, but it wasn't enough to keep my interest。 The plot is a bit slow, but even without that, I never could really get behind the main character。 DNF。 I'm just。。。not sure。 The book started out slightly irritating because it's a simplified female character who seems more like a caricature of herself。 (A bit ditzy, a bit helpless)。 Then it picks up a bit and gets interesting, and I think I made it 70% of the way through, but it wasn't enough to keep my interest。 The plot is a bit slow, but even without that, I never could really get behind the main character。 DNF。 。。。more

I like the idea and description of this book, it is unique。 But the plot is self heavy with religion tone make me got mixed feeling。 Personally I need extra detail from world building since this is my first book from the author。 Additional unique voice, depth from the characters will make them standout and memorable。 I will love extra character journey to become better version of their self。 Thanks Netgalley for providing me copy。

Intriguing intro to the magical world of Muirwood。 I want to hear more about druids, dryads, and leerings and how they build the world。

Interesting premise with a female lead coming into her powerThere's a lot going on here, especially being the first book in a series。 The main character, Eilean is at first timid but comes into her own as she learns how to use and tame repressed powers, ones she has been told she should never reveal。 She has help from Mordaunt, a captured Druid, labeled as a heretic against the religious order that rules the land。 Against all odds, it appears she has been chosen for a specific purpose, one that Interesting premise with a female lead coming into her powerThere's a lot going on here, especially being the first book in a series。 The main character, Eilean is at first timid but comes into her own as she learns how to use and tame repressed powers, ones she has been told she should never reveal。 She has help from Mordaunt, a captured Druid, labeled as a heretic against the religious order that rules the land。 Against all odds, it appears she has been chosen for a specific purpose, one that can change the current order over the world。What I liked: - Fantasy elements; medieval magic (i。e Druids, seers)- Battle over religion- Many likeable characters, even the ones who may be at odds with the protagonist- Female lead choosing her own path despite being born to be nothing more than a servant to othersI would actually give this a 3。5 stars。 The world building was interesting with a few bits confusing; however it did not detract from the story。 I am looking forward to the next parts of the series to see what happens with the characters。 。。。more

👍👍👍I read a lot of fantasy books and its hard to find a new series that changes things up。 Druid sets a new world and dynamic that is easy to follow and beautifully written。

Great story, terrible (non) ending The book is a great read, then it just ends。 In the middle of the story。 Nothing is resolved。 I guess you have to buy the next half of the book to continue。

More It's been a number of years since I read the Muirwood series, so I was delighted to see this new addition to the series come out。 It's as good as the first novels, and has not lost any of the feel and authenticity from the first original books。 The characters are well defined, and the story is good! Magical worldIn many ways a gentle tale。 A world of magic is carefully drawn and although the pace is measured the reader is drawn in to the characters and background life of the time。 Magic is slowly revealed。

Intriguing continuing story by Jeff Wheeler。Druids and others that that's want to control。 Add in low class basic kitchen help along with others who are sent to another part of the kingdom to build a new Abbey from basically swampland。 One young girl is to watch over a supposed evil druid who they really want to steal a tome or (magic book)。 Interesting and entertaining。 Intriguing continuing story by Jeff Wheeler。Druids and others that that's want to control。 Add in low class basic kitchen help along with others who are sent to another part of the kingdom to build a new Abbey from basically swampland。 One young girl is to watch over a supposed evil druid who they really want to steal a tome or (magic book)。 Interesting and entertaining。 。。。more

As a superfan of the Kingfountain and Ransom series, I was intrigued by the idea of the story of the founding of Muirwood。 As in Jeff wheeler's works,(and I have read all of them), we have a heroic character in Eilean, who comes into her powers as the story advances。 If you have not read any Muirwood books before, this is a good introduction, but if you have read the Muirwood series, you will meet terms and objects that will be familiar to you。 On to the next installment! Well written but too much magic and not enough history。 Most plot twists were too gentle and long foreshadowed - so not many real surprises。 Magic metaphysical remedies solved most challenges。 Vivid landscape descriptions and admirable protagonists are appealing but not sufficient to make up for a lack of a compelling story。 There is also a substantial feminist perspective on the ubiquitous evils of testosterone and the danger posed by many/most males。 The novel didn't include much of the curren Well written but too much magic and not enough history。 Most plot twists were too gentle and long foreshadowed - so not many real surprises。 Magic metaphysical remedies solved most challenges。 Vivid landscape descriptions and admirable protagonists are appealing but not sufficient to make up for a lack of a compelling story。 There is also a substantial feminist perspective on the ubiquitous evils of testosterone and the danger posed by many/most males。 The novel didn't include much of the current anthropological scholarship on druids。 I also was disappointed that the conclusion was mostly an invitation to read the next book in the series。。。 I won't be。 。。。more

This was an entertaining book from an author with a vivid imagination who wrote a lovely story about youth, growing into more than expected, how tutors are placed at the right time, and how to touch into the unseen。 I enjoyed it。

An adult fantasy, finally, and a wonderful one!I enjoyed reading this story。 The characters are described fully, as are the scenes, and I was pulled into the story quickly。 I was disappointed when I reached the last page, because wanted to continue reading more。 Thank goodness this is a series。 On to the next, and with excitement。

FascinatedI've looked for years for a book that dealt with Druids in a thoughtful way。 This one does with a story line that is intriguing and well written。 FascinatedI've looked for years for a book that dealt with Druids in a thoughtful way。 This one does with a story line that is intriguing and well written。 。。。more
