Summary

Naomi Judd's life as a country music superstar has been nonstop success。 But offstage, she has battled incredible adversity。 Struggling through a childhood of harsh family secrets, the death of a young sibling, and absent emotional support, Naomi found herself reluctantly married and an expectant mother at age seventeen。 Four years later, she was a single mom of two, who survived being beaten and raped, and was abandoned without any financial support and nowhere to turn in Hollywood, CA。

Naomi has always been a survivor: She put herself through nursing school to support her young daughters, then took a courageous chance by moving to Nashville to pursue their fantastic dream of careers in country music。 Her leap of faith paid off, and Naomi and her daughter Wynonna became The Judds, soon ranking with country music's biggest stars, selling more than 20 million records and winning six Grammys。

At the height of the singing duo's popularity, Naomi was given three years to live after being diagnosed with the previously incurable Hepatitis C。 Miraculously, she overcame that too and was pronounced completely cured five years later。

But Naomi was still to face her most desperate fight yet。 After finishing a tour with Wynonna in 2011, she began a three-year battle with Severe Treatment Resistant Depression and anxiety。 She suffered through frustrating and dangerous roller-coaster effects with antidepressants and other drugs, often terrifying therapies and, at her absolute lowest points, thoughts of suicide。 But Naomi persevered once again。 RIVER OF TIME is her poignant message of hope to anyone whose life has been scarred by trauma。

Even if you aren’t a fan of country music this is 100% worth a read。 This heart-breaking yet beautiful memoir is a captivating, instructive piece of writing that I know will stay with me for a very long time。

This was a very candid look at Naomi Judd's experiences with depression。 I think it's a good source of information on treatments and medications for depression。 And maybe it's a lifeline or relatable telling for people with depression。 From the outside looking in, I don't know if it's a good source for people battling depression。 This was a very candid look at Naomi Judd's experiences with depression。 I think it's a good source of information on treatments and medications for depression。 And maybe it's a lifeline or relatable telling for people with depression。 From the outside looking in, I don't know if it's a good source for people battling depression。 。。。more

Listen, I get it。 When they ask you if you want to review a book this isn’t what they mean。 But, I’m 40 now and I no longer really give a turd what “they” want 😂💩I LOVED this book!!! It was good for me, you may not agree。 The very best part for me is how it made me remember how much I adored the Judds and how much I’ve missed them。 I’m sad it’s over。。。I’ll miss them again, but at least we have the music。

Angie

Pretty well written。 A few places I had to reread to see the connections between past and present。 Nice to read about a celebrity w the same challenges I face。 Hoping I, too, can rise above this illness and accept the new me, moving forward。。

This book had a lot of medical terminology that I needed to get through was hard。 But the story of Naomi’s life was unbelievable。 This book gave so many insights in what we need to look at in our own lives。 I will be reading this book again and making notes as to what I can do to turn my life around。

A lot of key takeaways and concepts I have failed to grasp in psychology and self help books before。 Perhaps it is her down to earth approach or outlook on life, but I learned a lot about depression and ways to overcome grief。

Naomi shares her journey through late in life depression。 Her suggestions for treating depression are good; her story relatable。 Well done。 And I’m not a country fan, but appreciate her prose。

I thought this would be a great book to help people understand depression and how to deal with it, but I didn’t get that from this book。 I admire the author a lot, it’s just not what I thought it would be。

3。5 stars。 This is beautifully open about this tough part of her life。 The more people who come forward and are open about the depression and anxiety they suffer the less of a stigma it will have in our society。 There are many people who experience this 。 Seeing how someone deals with them is helpful to others。

I really enjoyed this book。 To think that someone of Naomi Judd's talent and fame could fall into such deep depression and have severe anxiety/pains attacks makes you understand why some people commit suicide。 I was happy to rad hat he has found a way to overcome her condition and deal with it in a healthy way。 I really enjoyed this book。 To think that someone of Naomi Judd's talent and fame could fall into such deep depression and have severe anxiety/pains attacks makes you understand why some people commit suicide。 I was happy to rad hat he has found a way to overcome her condition and deal with it in a healthy way。 。。。more

Now I understand how depression kills the soul。 No wonder people commit suicide to get relief from the pain。 Kudos to Naomi for sharing her story。

I’m giving this book 3 stars because I think it has some very useful information for anyone who suffers from anxiety, depression and panic attacks。 I have read Love Can Build A Bridge, an earlier auto biography by Naomi and Wynonna Judd。 I’ve also read 2 of Wynonna’s autobiographies and 1 of Ashley’s。 Reading all of these autobiographies has given me the feeling that Naomi is a bit of an OCD , control freak with Narcissistic tendencies。 So why would I read this one? Because I was hoping for more insight into what caused her depression and anxiety and that maybe she would fess up to some of the lies/ stories in her first book( Love Can Build a Bridge)。 She does elaborate to embellishing her description of her parents as if they were a Happy and loving couple in her 1st book。 In reality they were cold and unemotional and her Father drank too much。 Mental health issues do seem to run on both sides of her family。 I just find it a bit telling that it doesn’t emerge and fully flood her until the spotlight is off of her and she is having to sit back and watch her daughter’s gaining all the attention now。She makes many pats on the back towards herself, admits only minimal mistakes as a mother and seems to constantly wonder why her relationship with Wynonna is so strained。 Hmmm, maybe because she Lied to Wynonna for about 30 yrs about who her biological Father really was? Yeah that will cause some family friction but she never apologizes in her book about that, barely touches on that subject at all。 Passes it off as a desperate need for attention type of one night stand and never seen him again。 Im not saying she never suffered with depression or anxiety but her timing for this book after both her daughter’s have written some not so flattering stories about her, makes it feel like this is her attempt to save face for herself。 In the end it’s between them and I hope they can heal and be a big happy family again。 。。。more

I'm not a huge fan of Naomi, or any of the Judd's (I don't dislike them, I just don't listen to their music much because it doesn't appeal to me) but I was loaned this book and I read just about anything these days。 Anyway, I really appreciated this book。 It came at a propitious time since I just recently have been having panic attacks。 I don't know if it's due to hormone imbalance or what but she had a lot of great advice on how to deal with them, just from her own experience。 I even copied a f I'm not a huge fan of Naomi, or any of the Judd's (I don't dislike them, I just don't listen to their music much because it doesn't appeal to me) but I was loaned this book and I read just about anything these days。 Anyway, I really appreciated this book。 It came at a propitious time since I just recently have been having panic attacks。 I don't know if it's due to hormone imbalance or what but she had a lot of great advice on how to deal with them, just from her own experience。 I even copied a few pages to keep for later。 Great read, especially for those going through anxiety! 。。。more

I'm nut sure what I thought of this book。 I wanted more of a biography of Judd's life, but this book covers a very brief period in extensive detail, with flashbacks to younger days。 The variety of treatment options discussed is truly dizzying, and leaves me grieving for all the author went through。 I'm nut sure what I thought of this book。 I wanted more of a biography of Judd's life, but this book covers a very brief period in extensive detail, with flashbacks to younger days。 The variety of treatment options discussed is truly dizzying, and leaves me grieving for all the author went through。 。。。more

Mixed emotions on this one。 It made me dislike her, however I have great empathy for her truthfulness (?) of her journey with depression。 I applaud her for telling her story, as so many suffer with anxiety and depression and the stigma that goes with it。

I found this book helpful in understanding depression, anxiety, and trauma from the viewpoint of someone who seems to "have it all"。 In addition to being completely honest about her challenges (including suicidal ideation), Naomi Judd provided some solid strategies to living with mental illness, which I appreciated。 I found this book helpful in understanding depression, anxiety, and trauma from the viewpoint of someone who seems to "have it all"。 In addition to being completely honest about her challenges (including suicidal ideation), Naomi Judd provided some solid strategies to living with mental illness, which I appreciated。 。。。more

This is a great book & well written。 I enjoyed following along as Naomi told the story of her early childhood and struggles as a young, single parent。 Her rise to fame in The Judds, and her downward spiral into depression & anxiety。 She is very candid & forthcoming about the not so glamorous elements of mental illness & the toll it takes。 During the various trials of trying to find medications and other treatments, she opens up on what worked for her & what didn't。 I would highly recommend this This is a great book & well written。 I enjoyed following along as Naomi told the story of her early childhood and struggles as a young, single parent。 Her rise to fame in The Judds, and her downward spiral into depression & anxiety。 She is very candid & forthcoming about the not so glamorous elements of mental illness & the toll it takes。 During the various trials of trying to find medications and other treatments, she opens up on what worked for her & what didn't。 I would highly recommend this book。 。。。more

Naomi Judd writes a very personal honest book about dealing with severe depression。 For a few years she was struck very hard with depression。 She writes about how it runs in her family and some family member who have committed suicide。 She writes she was very close to doing the same thing on a bridge but stopped herself。 She went through very intense times in hospitals trying to get off the strong medications she had become addicted to 。 I give her a lot of credit for being so honest about what Naomi Judd writes a very personal honest book about dealing with severe depression。 For a few years she was struck very hard with depression。 She writes about how it runs in her family and some family member who have committed suicide。 She writes she was very close to doing the same thing on a bridge but stopped herself。 She went through very intense times in hospitals trying to get off the strong medications she had become addicted to 。 I give her a lot of credit for being so honest about what she went through。 She also talks about her family history。 Relatives who were abusive or not there for her。 I am sure this was a difficult book for her to write。 Good for her and being so brave to talk about what she went through to get better。 。。。more
