Summary

Between the Mountain and the Sky shows us the goodness that is possible when a single person--regardless of age--takes action to help another and, in the process, changes the lives of hundreds。

Maggie’s story begins in suburban New Jersey, in a comfortable middle-class family that supports her decision to travel the world during a gap year before starting college。 During her travels, the trajectory of her life alters when she has a surprise encounter with a Nepali girl breaking rocks in a quarry。 Maggie decides to invest her life savings of five thousand dollars to buy a piece of land and open a children’s home in Nepal。

That home becomes Kopila Valley Children’s Home, and eventually, the nonprofit Maggie launches, the BlinkNow Foundation, also starts the Kopila Valley School, which provides tuition-free education for more than four hundred students。 Maggie and BlinkNow’s work have been recognized around the world for their innovative, sustainable work。

However, this book isn’t a how-to for fledging philanthropists or nonprofit founders--it’s a coming-of-age story about a young woman suspended between two worlds, as well as the love, loss, healing, and hope she experiences along the way。 And Maggie’s inspiring, intimate tale shows readers an important truth: the power to change the world exists within all of us。

This is a beautifully written first memoir from an inspiring compassionate young philanthropist。 Maggie writes with ease and flow, painting pictures of her environment, filled with love and grief。 The reader flows along this journey with the author, getting to understand the diverse environments of her NJ upbringing and Nepali roots。 It's concise, yet blossoms with beautiful, tangible details。I look forward to more from this author。 We just love Maggie Doyne。 This is a beautifully written first memoir from an inspiring compassionate young philanthropist。 Maggie writes with ease and flow, painting pictures of her environment, filled with love and grief。 The reader flows along this journey with the author, getting to understand the diverse environments of her NJ upbringing and Nepali roots。 It's concise, yet blossoms with beautiful, tangible details。I look forward to more from this author。 We just love Maggie Doyne。 。。。more

How many stars are in the sky? That’s how many I give this book。 Maggie opened up her heart and spilled it on these pages。 It is beautifully written。 It speaks of the incredible suffering and hardships of the people in Nepal, especially the women and children, and one young woman’s path to making a difference。 For me this book is a call to action to do more and to love more while we are here in our fleeting lives, that can change in a blink of an eye。 <3。 (Listened to the audio version)

As a former resident of Mendham (Maggie’s hometown), I have followed Maggie’s journey from the beginning。 Even though I knew her story, I still found myself captivated by this book and even more amazed by what Maggie chose to do。 So many of us turn a blind eye to what is happening in our own country, state or towns, and while we all may not be called to do what Maggie did and continues to do, I know that I personally can and should do more。 Maggie’s inspiring words and call to action is to love。 As a former resident of Mendham (Maggie’s hometown), I have followed Maggie’s journey from the beginning。 Even though I knew her story, I still found myself captivated by this book and even more amazed by what Maggie chose to do。 So many of us turn a blind eye to what is happening in our own country, state or towns, and while we all may not be called to do what Maggie did and continues to do, I know that I personally can and should do more。 Maggie’s inspiring words and call to action is to love。 All of us can do that better! I was already familiar with Maggie and Blink Now but oh my goodness…。。the story behind the story is even more incredible。 Hope radiates off the pages。 I am a mother of two and I’ve never read anything that evokes the indescribable love of your child, and the sheer terror that that love can inspire, the way Maggie’s words did。 It was also a beautiful tribute to Nepal and its people。 Thank you Maggie for sharing your story with the world。 I can’t wait to one day pass it along to my boys and hopefu I was already familiar with Maggie and Blink Now but oh my goodness…。。the story behind the story is even more incredible。 Hope radiates off the pages。 I am a mother of two and I’ve never read anything that evokes the indescribable love of your child, and the sheer terror that that love can inspire, the way Maggie’s words did。 It was also a beautiful tribute to Nepal and its people。 Thank you Maggie for sharing your story with the world。 I can’t wait to one day pass it along to my boys and hopefully inspire them too to change the world。 。。。more

This woman, the amazing people she has surrounded herself with, their home and their school, her children, her husband, and their dog, will all allow you to rethink the way we treat and view each other。 Through her amazing story, you will feel yourself changing word by word, sentence by sentence, chapter by chapter。 Rather than seeing people through the lens of their nationality, gender, language, status, or age, you start to see people through the lens of love, like Maggie does。

This book is a love letter right to the reader。 It is a work of intimacy and generosity。 Doyne lets us stand right next to her as she shares her story。 We bear witness and get to laugh, grieve, build and learn at her side。 She doesn't look away-- she never looks away-- and so we can't either。 I will see differently and love differently after reading this book。 This book is a love letter right to the reader。 It is a work of intimacy and generosity。 Doyne lets us stand right next to her as she shares her story。 We bear witness and get to laugh, grieve, build and learn at her side。 She doesn't look away-- she never looks away-- and so we can't either。 I will see differently and love differently after reading this book。 。。。more

An incredible story by/about an even more incredible woman。 I loved how raw and open she is in telling her story which includes unthinkable trauma but is ultimately one of hope and most importantly, love。

An amazing memoir beautifully written。 I could vividly see and smell the beauty of Nepal。 I’m so impressed with the way she approached her goal-of helping those with less。 She’s created a guide map here for thoughtful and creative ways to do the same in other communities。 Thank you for sharing the beautiful yet heartbreaking truths of your journey。
