Summary

A twisty, voice-driven thriller for fans of Megan Miranda and Jessica Knoll, in which no one bats an eye when a Black reality TV star is found dead in the Bronx—except her estranged half-sister, whose refusal to believe the official story leads her on a dangerous search for the truth。

When the body of disgraced reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found on a playground in the Bronx the morning after her 25th birthday party, the police and the media are quick to declare her death an overdose。 It’s a tragedy, certainly, but not a crime。

But Desiree’s half-sister Lena Scott knows that can’t be the case。 A graduate student at Columbia, Lena has spent the past decade forging her own path far from the spotlight, but some facts about Desiree just couldn’t have changed since their childhood。 And Desiree would never travel above 125th Street。 So why is no one listening to her?

Despite the bitter truth that the two haven’t spoken in two years, torn apart by Desiree’s partying and by their father, Mel, a wealthy and influential hip-hop mogul, Lena becomes determined to find justice for her sister, even if it means untangling her family’s darkest secrets—or ending up dead herself

Now this is how you write an engaging mystery! From the first page I was hooked and it truly had me guessing until the last page though I will say I did find the ending a bit rushed。

Lena hasn’t talked to her sister, Desirae in 2 years。 She finds out Desirae died of an overdose in a park near her home。 She lives nowhere near Lena’s home。 What was she doing over there? Was it really an overdose? Or did something more sinister take place? And if so, what, and why?? This one read like a YA novel, but I was there for it! I loved this one and flew through it。 Lena is an awesome detective getting more figured out in less time than the actual detectives working the case。 Now- I wil Lena hasn’t talked to her sister, Desirae in 2 years。 She finds out Desirae died of an overdose in a park near her home。 She lives nowhere near Lena’s home。 What was she doing over there? This story had multiple twists and I couldn’t guess how it was going to end up。 My thoughts went back and forth a ton and I never figured out what happened to Desirae til the end。 I love that! This is a fast read that will keep you engaged! 。。。more

Heartbreaking book about a woman whose sister has died in an apparent accidental overdose—but she suspects her sister was murdered。 Twists and turns and misdirection throughout the book。 Author uses similes like it’s going out of style (intended)。

Wasn't expecting it to have as many humourous lines as it had。 Genuinely laughed out loud multiple times。 The mystery is fine, but kind of flew together right at the end。 The characters are the best part, Lena is exceptional。 Wasn't expecting it to have as many humourous lines as it had。 Genuinely laughed out loud multiple times。 The mystery is fine, but kind of flew together right at the end。 The characters are the best part, Lena is exceptional。 。。。more

Every time I thought I had it figured out, Kellye Garrett threw in another twist。 Suspenseful through to the end。

I really enjoyed this book, twists and red herrings were great。 I loved the writing and all the little details。It'd me four stars from me except that I honestly didn't get what was the motivation of a killer。(view spoiler)[I couldn't even get how Stuart knew Naut and how did he get his confession and why he was so passionate about that to kill two women and trying to kill another one。 (hide spoiler)]Another thing - both main characters were not likeable at all。 Desiree was extremely selfish and I really enjoyed this book, twists and red herrings were great。 I loved the writing and all the little details。It'd me four stars from me except that I honestly didn't get what was the motivation of a killer。(view spoiler)[I couldn't even get how Stuart knew Naut and how did he get his confession and why he was so passionate about that to kill two women and trying to kill another one。 (hide spoiler)]Another thing - both main characters were not likeable at all。 Desiree was extremely selfish and vain causing trouble to everyone around her and didn't care about anyone, not a single nice detail about her, even as a child she was stealing from her sister。 Lena was constantly annoyed and judgemental to everyone。 But overall it is an excellent novel and I'll definitely read more by Kellye Garrett。 。。。more

This was a decent book that had a few twists but it feels like something was missing or left unfinished。 I think I want to know more about Erin。

Gripping From the first page it had never。 I really enjoyed it。 Definitely going to look for other books by this author。 As a New Yorker, I knew where the characters were in most of the scenes。 It felt like I was watching a movie instead of listening & reading a book。

Do not necessarily recommend the audio was well done and mc easy to root for but rather slow moving almost dang

This book kept me guessing til the end and I loved all of the twists and turns! Lena is determined to find out what happened to her half sister Desiree。 She is convinced that she didn't die of an overdose and she turns herself into quite the detective doing the research she doesn't think the cops are doing。 I will say, this book was much better as an audiobook。 I felt like I was watching a tv show。 I tried reading it and I just couldn't get into it, but as an audiobook, I couldn't turn it off。 This book kept me guessing til the end and I loved all of the twists and turns! I secretly love diving into a book that I’ve seen such contrasting reviews for and going into this one, I’d seen DNF to multiple five stars and I was excited to see where I would land! While I did find it a bit slow for me at times, I did still enjoy it and found this domestic suspense to be smart and intriguing。 I enjoyed how Lena took on an amateur sleuth role and was determined to find out what happened to her sister。 I rotated this one between ebook and audio and must say I loved the narrator I secretly love diving into a book that I’ve seen such contrasting reviews for and going into this one, I’d seen DNF to multiple five stars and I was excited to see where I would land! While I did find it a bit slow for me at times, I did still enjoy it and found this domestic suspense to be smart and intriguing。 I enjoyed how Lena took on an amateur sleuth role and was determined to find out what happened to her sister。 I rotated this one between ebook and audio and must say I loved the narrator and thought she was a perfect fit for this book! The main problem with this book is that it was pretty boring throughout。 A lot of hanging around and going places without a lot of progress in the mystery。 It wrapped up pretty well, which is what saved it from 2 stars。 I also liked the narrator was a Black lady, and the cast was diverse。I thought the protagonist had a lot of potential being a smart and brave, but in the end she left much to be desired (seems like all she did was talk about her itchy left wrist, say "shit nuts", and not eat for The main problem with this book is that it was pretty boring throughout。 A lot of hanging around and going places without a lot of progress in the mystery。 It wrapped up pretty well, which is what saved it from 2 stars。 I also liked the narrator was a Black lady, and the cast was diverse。I thought the protagonist had a lot of potential being a smart and brave, but in the end she left much to be desired (seems like all she did was talk about her itchy left wrist, say "shit nuts", and not eat for several days)。 I also thought the killer came kinda out of left field, wasn't too impressed with that reveal。 。。。more

I had high hopes for this one and selected it as a Pub Day Pick when it was released。 It was getting lots of good press and I always enjoy books about sisterhood or involving sister relationships。 I have a sister and know that I'd fight to the death to find out the truth if something happened to her。Overall, I enjoyed Lena's voice and rooted for her to solve the mystery surrounding Desiree's death。 I called it pretty early on, so that's always a bummer。 I thought the author did a great job descr I had high hopes for this one and selected it as a Pub Day Pick when it was released。 It was getting lots of good press and I always enjoy books about sisterhood or involving sister relationships。 I have a sister and know that I'd fight to the death to find out the truth if something happened to her。Overall, I enjoyed Lena's voice and rooted for her to solve the mystery surrounding Desiree's death。 I called it pretty early on, so that's always a bummer。 I thought the author did a great job describing the family dynamic with Mel and his seemingly dismissive ways。 The last half of the book is much more interesting than the first half which worked fine。 So a solid 3 on this one。 Nothing spectacular but enjoyable all the same。 。。。more

This is my first read from Kellye Garrett and I enjoyed the twists and turns of this murder mystery。 From the moment Lena found out her sister had died, she was immediately suspicious of her death。 Not having spoken to her sister for years after a falling out, the innate sisterly connection immediately called foul play。 Garrett takes us through a winding suspenseful journey of trying to piece together Desiree's last days to find out who killed her。 Within all of that is family trauma from childh This is my first read from Kellye Garrett and I enjoyed the twists and turns of this murder mystery。 From the moment Lena found out her sister had died, she was immediately suspicious of her death。 Not having spoken to her sister for years after a falling out, the innate sisterly connection immediately called foul play。 Garrett takes us through a winding suspenseful journey of trying to piece together Desiree's last days to find out who killed her。 Within all of that is family trauma from childhood and Lena struggling with the sister she remembers versus who her sister was at the time of her death。 The pace of the story was a bit up and down for me and the only real gripe I have is that some things felt a little underdeveloped。 Also, the whodunnit definitely didn't give me the closure I wanted。 。。。more

I loved this! Lena Scott is the character of my heart and exactly what I look for when I’m searching for my next read with a “strong female lead。” This was a light thriller, very whodunit with family drama and dynamic characters。 I switched to the audiobook during commutes, and Bahni Turpin does excellent narration that kicks up the tension。

I was hooked from the first paragraph! “I found out my sister was back in New York from Instagram。 I found out she’d died from the New York Daily News。” Like whatttttt! So good! My favorite relationship dynamics in the novel were with Melina and Aunt E as well as Melina and Erin。 The bickering, no non-sense energy was great and hilarious especially, them having each other back。 It was definitely like a family。 Another aspect I love was the setting。 Taking place in NY/NJ as a Jersey girl this was perfect, especially since I'm kind of feeling homesick at the moment。 But anyway, if you couldn't tell Like a Sister by Kelleye Garrett is one of my new favorite mystery thrillers that I think everyone would enjoy! 。。。more

Finally some rich lady problems I like。 Lena's sister dies and she does everything in her power to find out exactly what happened and why。 She is meeting with producers and rappers and other famous people, hanging out with her sister's best friend, and telling off annoying reporters。 Her rich dad is trying to keep her safe but she is so angry with him that he can't help her。 It was just good with lots of twists and turns。 Finally some rich lady problems I like。 Lena's sister dies and she does everything in her power to find out exactly what happened and why。 She is meeting with producers and rappers and other famous people, hanging out with her sister's best friend, and telling off annoying reporters。 Her rich dad is trying to keep her safe but she is so angry with him that he can't help her。 It was just good with lots of twists and turns。 。。。more

Lena Scott’s half-sister, former reality tv star Desiree Pierce, is dead。 At first glance, it looks like an accidental overdose, but Lena is not convinced。 You have to root for Lena。 The book is told from her first-person point of view and she’s smart, tenacious, funny, and sassy。 The other characters are well-done too, from Desiree’s best friend to Mel, the hip-hop producer father。 And they each of secrets they’re not telling Lena。 There’s a lot about Desiree’s life that Lena doesn’t understand Lena Scott’s half-sister, former reality tv star Desiree Pierce, is dead。 At first glance, it looks like an accidental overdose, but Lena is not convinced。 You have to root for Lena。 The book is told from her first-person point of view and she’s smart, tenacious, funny, and sassy。 The other characters are well-done too, from Desiree’s best friend to Mel, the hip-hop producer father。 And they each of secrets they’re not telling Lena。 There’s a lot about Desiree’s life that Lena doesn’t understand and she doesn’t know who she can trust。It’s a very contemporary mystery。 A lot of the clues are on Desiree’s phone, contacts, messages, photos, her Instagram account。 It had twists and turns and I was nowhere close to guessing the killer。 It all made sense in the end though。 The story kept me riveted to the page。 I was invited into a world that I don’t usually visit even in books, with rappers and “influencers” and $400 bottles of water。 。。。more
