I had read the prose short story many times before this adaptation。 Neil Gaiman is always worth a read。 But Neil Gaiman plus Colleen Doran is a Must Buy。 Her art has such beauty and depth。 Every time I look at it, I notice something new, which is perfect considering the source material。

I like this short story a lot but didn’t need it with the art。 (A Gaiman theme this week I guess?)

。。。more

I'd completely forgotten about this story and when I first started reading this graphic novel version of it, even though it felt familiar, I couldn't get into it at first。 I thought there was too much text on the panels and I wasn't impressed by the art。 As I was reading more though, everything became more organic, and by the middle, words and images started blending together beautifully。 The second half was absolutely majestic。 The art becomes more striking and nothing short of impressive。 I'd I'd completely forgotten about this story and when I first started reading this graphic novel version of it, even though it felt familiar, I couldn't get into it at first。 I thought there was too much text on the panels and I wasn't impressed by the art。 As I was reading more though, everything became more organic, and by the middle, words and images started blending together beautifully。 The second half was absolutely majestic。 The art becomes more striking and nothing short of impressive。 I'd remembered the ending before I actually got to read it again, but that didn't steal anything away about how truly beautiful this creation is。 Plus, I found it a big bonus that we get to read and see a bit behind the scenes in the appendix。 。。。more

I know the short story of old, from its Smoke and Mirrors appearance, and I loved the juxtaposition of the fantastic with the everyday。 This is a very beautiful adaptation, with the artwork perfectly capturing that juxtaposition。I don't know if it's from the artwork or if I'm just older now, but Mrs Whitaker is something of a juxtaposition herself to me now - both a lonely old woman and a well of wisdom, empathy and observation。 A person who contains worlds。 I know the short story of old, from its Smoke and Mirrors appearance, and I loved the juxtaposition of the fantastic with the everyday。 This is a very beautiful adaptation, with the artwork perfectly capturing that juxtaposition。I don't know if it's from the artwork or if I'm just older now, but Mrs Whitaker is something of a juxtaposition herself to me now - both a lonely old woman and a well of wisdom, empathy and observation。 A person who contains worlds。 。。。more

According to the artist Colleen Doran, she had to wait 25 years before she could finally get to adapt this Gaiman short story。 And I'm so happy she held on。An old lady buys the Holy Grail at a second-hand shop and puts it on her mantelpiece。 Then Sir Galahad visits her, on his quest for the Holy Grail, to persuade her to give him the cup。 She's is not easily persuaded。It feels like a comic from Gaiman's time at Vertigo - a lovely, gentle, very smart story full of humour。 Doran's art is fantastic According to the artist Colleen Doran, she had to wait 25 years before she could finally get to adapt this Gaiman short story。 And I'm so happy she held on。An old lady buys the Holy Grail at a second-hand shop and puts it on her mantelpiece。 Then Sir Galahad visits her, on his quest for the Holy Grail, to persuade her to give him the cup。 She's is not easily persuaded。It feels like a comic from Gaiman's time at Vertigo - a lovely, gentle, very smart story full of humour。 Doran's art is fantastic, taking middle ages manuscripts as a stylistic source。 And it's fantastic。Highly recommended。(Thanks to Dark Horse Books for providing me with an ARC through Edelweiss) 。。。more

This was an adorably funny story about an old woman who comes across the Holy Grail in a thrift shop。 Deciding it would look perfect on her mantle she purchases it and brings it home only to have Sir Galahad show up looking for it。 Bartering ensues。 I loved the story, I laughed out loud several times and Mrs。 Whitaker was such a sweetheart。 But I think what I really loved the most about this was actually Doran's explanation of what a labor of love this was at the end。 I truly appreciated it more This was an adorably funny story about an old woman who comes across the Holy Grail in a thrift shop。 Deciding it would look perfect on her mantle she purchases it and brings it home only to have Sir Galahad show up looking for it。 Bartering ensues。 I loved the story, I laughed out loud several times and Mrs。 Whitaker was such a sweetheart。 But I think what I really loved the most about this was actually Doran's explanation of what a labor of love this was at the end。 I truly appreciated it more after reading that。 Especially just how much thought she had put into the art styles she would use。 And it all paid off beautifully because the illustrations are wonderful! Note: I received a review copy of Neil Gaiman's Chivalry from Dark Horse Comics and Edelweiss+。 All thoughts are my own。Some comics just blow you away the moment you start reading them。 Whether it's a mind-blowing story or a collection of gorgeous artwork, there's no feeling like reading a brilliant graphic novel。 And Colleen Doran's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story, "Chivalry," is a perfect example of this。 While the original story is a sweet little tale about an elderly woman who finds Note: I received a review copy of Neil Gaiman's Chivalry from Dark Horse Comics and Edelweiss+。 All thoughts are my own。Some comics just blow you away the moment you start reading them。 Whether it's a mind-blowing story or a collection of gorgeous artwork, there's no feeling like reading a brilliant graphic novel。 And Colleen Doran's adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story, "Chivalry," is a perfect example of this。 While the original story is a sweet little tale about an elderly woman who finds the Holy Grail in a charity shop, Doran's adaptation raises things to a whole new level。 With artwork that bounces back and forth between warm and comfy watercolors and pages that look like an intricately illustrated manuscript, every page of "Chivalry" is a work of art all in itself。Like most of Dark Horse Comics' previous Neil Gaiman adaptations, "Chivalry" faithfully adapts the original story。 One day, Mrs。 Whittaker finds the Holy Grail in a charity shop and takes it home。 And soon afterward, an Arthurian knight starts visiting her, hoping to acquire the Grain and finally complete his age-old quest。 "Chivalry" isn't a particularly complicated story。 But its charm lies in that simplicity。 At its heart, "Chivalry" is just a sweet, comedic romp in the best way possible。 Mrs。 Whittaker's complete lack of interest in the Grail's significance - or the knight's increasingly outrageous trade offers - proves endlessly delightful。 And the quiet, melancholic edge that runs through much of the story helps keep things grounded and endears Mrs。 Whittaker even more。 It's an enjoyable short story in its original form。 But it's even more enjoyable here。Colleen Doran's artwork is what makes this adaptation truly come to life。 And, simply put, her artwork is a thing of beauty。 Perfectly emphasizing the story's combination of humor and heart, the artwork always works in service of the story。 There's never a moment where the art distracts from what's going on or makes anything unclear。 Even in the moments more firmly drenched in fantasy, where Doran lets her imagination run wild through intricate facsimiles of old, illustrated manuscripts。 These facsimiles greatly elevate the original text, much like Doran's art in "Snow, Glass, Apple" did。 While the style and color palette greatly differs between the two works, anyone who's read "Snow, Glass, Apple" already has a pretty good idea of what to expect here。 Every time one of those illustrated manuscript pages appears, you just want to stop reading and take in every single gorgeous detail。While those pages are probably what most people will remember, the rest of the book's art is every bit as gorgeous。 Much of the artwork is done in a watercolor style that, according to Doran's notes at the end of the book, is modeled after the work of Beatrix Potter。 And you can definitely tell。 This artwork has a very calm, warm feeling to it。 And similar to how the illustrated manuscript style emphasizes the story's fantasy, these softer, soothing watercolors emphasize the story's heart。 The two styles work together to create a deeply enjoyable experience full of high fantasy and endless heart。 Doran's adaptation of "Chivalry" is the kind of book you wanna curl up with on a cold winter day。 Warm, inviting, and absolutely gorgeous。All in all, "Neil Gaiman's Chivalry" is a must-read for Gaiman fans。 It's a sweet, enjoyable story made all the better by Doran's truly breathtaking artwork。 You might devour it quickly the first time。 But you'll keep returning to it over and over again to properly soak up the artwork。 I hope Dark Horse decides to print this in some kind of oversized format someday, like DC's Absolute Editions。 Because Doran's artwork deserves to be seen in as large a format as possible。 Honestly, "Chivalry" might be one of the prettiest graphic novels I've read in a long time。 And I loved every single page of it。 。。。more

I requested this DRC for a lot of reasons from the author to the synopsis but the biggest reason was that I fell in love with Colleen Doran's art for Snow, Glass, Apple。 The story itself is very short, funny and heartwarming but it was the art that did it for me once again。 If like me you are going into it expecting anything like Snow, Glass, Apple exact, clean lines and beautiful colours you are in for a surprise because the style is completely different here。 Just like in the first book though I requested this DRC for a lot of reasons from the author to the synopsis but the biggest reason was that I fell in love with Colleen Doran's art for Snow, Glass, Apple。 The story itself is very short, funny and heartwarming but it was the art that did it for me once again。 If like me you are going into it expecting anything like Snow, Glass, Apple exact, clean lines and beautiful colours you are in for a surprise because the style is completely different here。 Just like in the first book though, I was left aghast at the artist talent and how it was clear that she is someone that is not only a master of her craft but a lover of the artists that came before her and you can feel her admiration and homage in every page。Thank you to Edelweiss and Dark Horse Books for this DRC。 。。。more

Thank you, Edelweiss, for my review copy。 I am conflicted about this。 As a short story (original format) I think this works brilliantly。 As a comic, I don’t think it has quite the same charm。 The artwork and style are great。 I really liked looking at the panels and it’s all executed well。 I don’t really think it could have been done any better as an adaptation, but I also don’t think this was the story for it。 I hope that makes sense。

I adored Gaiman's short story Chivalry when I first read it in an anthology, and immediately jumped in excitement when I saw it had been adapted into a graphic novel, forgetting for a bit that I generally tend to favour his written stories over the illustrated adaptations of them。 Case in point: Snow, Glass, Apples, which I vastly preferred as a short story。However, Chivalry fared better, so much better as a graphic novel adaptation, and I think the merit is all Colleen Doran's, the artist。 Like I adored Gaiman's short story Chivalry when I first read it in an anthology, and immediately jumped in excitement when I saw it had been adapted into a graphic novel, forgetting for a bit that I generally tend to favour his written stories over the illustrated adaptations of them。 Case in point: Snow, Glass, Apples, which I vastly preferred as a short story。However, Chivalry fared better, so much better as a graphic novel adaptation, and I think the merit is all Colleen Doran's, the artist。 Like me, Doran was head-over-heels in love with Gaiman's story the first time she read it, and that love was poured over the creation of the graphic novel。 She not only was faithful in her rendition of the storyline but also captured the spirit of the story, and made the storytelling dynamic in spite of how unhurried and quiet the pace is, and it having so many scenes that are wordless。I think that there's even aspects that make the adaptation better than the short story, such as the interactions between Galahad and Mrs Whitaker。 In the short story, there's an element of charming absurdity about the fact that Mrs Whitaker finds the real Holy Grail in the Oxfam secondhand shop and is fully aware of what it is (she seems to have a sixth sense for these things that's more explicit in the graphic novel), buys it because it'll look nice on her mantelpiece, and is soon visited by a handsome young knight called Galahad, who is searching for the Holy Grail and tries to buy it off of her; and she remains so unruffled about this。 In the graphic novel, this element of absurdity is pushed to the background rather than stand on the forefront, because now that you can see the old lady and the knight interacting, you realise things you didn't when only reading it without visualisation。 I am thinking specifically of how Galahad is actually earning the Holy Grail, as he should, which is made so very obvious by seeing him behave so obedient and helpful whenever Mrs Whitaker asks for his help or orders him around。 In the short story, it's easier to conclude that Galahad bought the Holy Grail from her when the underlying idea was that he won it, because the Grail comes with its own set of requirements。 Some things you just need to see to fully appreciate the subtleties and undercurrents, and this interaction is one of them。I liked Doran's colour palette much more in this second adaptation of hers of a Gaiman work, too。 She knows how to fit the palette into the mood of a story。 And also appreciated very much that she included author's notes by the end, that had informative explanations about her research and sources of inspiration。 It's been a thoroughly excellent job that's made Chivalry into my favourite work of hers (and Gaiman's, naturally) to date。Thank you to Edelweiss for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
