"Genius Foods" it has changed my approach to eating a lot。 I switched from a high carbohydrate, high sugar diet to a low carbohydrate (and low sugar of course) diet and my health is improving。 It's definitely a book worth attention! I lacked motivation, but the author of the book made me realize a lot and thanks to that I started to take care of myself。 I recommend to all seekers of a better health ♥ "Genius Foods" it has changed my approach to eating a lot。 I switched from a high carbohydrate, high sugar diet to a low carbohydrate (and low sugar of course) diet and my health is improving。 It's definitely a book worth attention! I'm splitting the difference。 I'd give this book four for dietary advice and zero for sensitivity to larger concerns about food supply, cost, environmental impact and sustainability which must be addressed if the foods recommended are to be widely available and affordable。A friend who is on a ketogenic diet recommended Max Lugavere's work to me in mid-2019 as one of several resources on diet and health。 I subscribed to his e-mail blast announcing his podcasts。 Mostly, the podcasts are interviews with medical experts of one kind or another but I don't find myself listening to them - this is how he supports himself, and the promotions during them turn me off。 The book worked better for me。 A ketogenic (or more moderate low-carb) diet cuts way down on sugars and starches and gets most calories from healthy, unrefined oils and fats。 This runs counter to the usual advice on cardiac health, to avoid fats。 As other reviews of this book on Goodreads show, there is hot dispute underway as to whether consumption of fats an oils on the one hand, or of carbohydrates on the other, lead to poor health。 I tried a ketogenic diet based on my friend's recommendation, and after an initial rocky period -- not having adjusted my intake yet to get enough protein or sodium - I settled down to feeling generally much better in several ways: clearer mind, way fewer fewer aches and pains; inflammatory conditions - psoriasis, throat irritation - fell away。 My cholesterol levels remained the same, just inside the normal range, when I went from a nearly completely vegan diet to one in which I am consuming fish and chicken for protein。 I'd avoid eating meat, but my body can't tolerate eggs or milk。Lugavere's central concern with this book is brain health, but his recommendations come down nearly to a ketogenic diet。 He does suggest an occasional carbohydrate-rich meal following exercise。 That turns out to be more or less what I have been doing: I consume more carbs during and after a long bicycle ride, for example。 The book is readable on two levels: for recommendations on diet and other ways to maintain and improve brain health; and as detailed and technical information about metabolism。 The book is indeed clearly written, with a sense of humor, and the recommendations (summarized at the end of each chapter are simple enough - eat this, don't eat that, get this kind of exercise - but the descriptions of metabolic pathways, hormones, genetics etc。 were more than I could hold onto, not having a background in biochemistry。 Lugavere, and contributor Paul Grewal, MD, do hedge on their advice。 That is to be expected in a litigious climate when presenting cutting-edge research results and sometimes going as far as speculation。 All in all, this book was an interesting read。 It deepened by respect for Lugavere as I came to understand that he is not just treading on the surface of dietary advice, but he (and with the assistance, surely, of his MD collaborator) has devoted a lot of study to the research record。 I also came away from this book with a deeper awareness how the drive to supply and market cheap food has debased the food supply in the USA。 A diet such as Lugavere recommends -- or any healthy, whole-foods diet -- is going to be hard to achieve on many people's budgets, and in food deserts or nutrition deserts where no nearby store carries a wide selection of fresh fruits and vegetables or the fresh fish, grass-fed beef and free-range chicken that Lugavere recommends。Lugavere criticizes industrial food production on the basis of its nutritional outcomes。 He does not address the cost issues, or the related issues of sustainability of agricultural and fishing practices。 His recommendation to empty the pantry and to throw away foods which he does not recommend rubs me the wrong way。 Someone is hungry, probably quite nearby, and a better solution is as close as the local food bank。 He also does not address moral issues with eating meat, beyond saying that animals raised for food should be raised under humane conditions and have "only one bad day" in their lives。 This issue does not apply only to animals raised for meat。 I have worked on a dairy farm, so I know that dairy farming involves impregnating cows so that calving will release milk。 Calves are removed from their mothers and taken away for slaughter; same with cows whose production wanes with age。 A chicken or duck kept humanely to supply eggs can have a better life but eventually will be slaughtered too as production wanes。 You may look at these issues face on, try to avoid contributing to them, or as it too common, put them out of mind。Lugavere offers no lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet plan, though a ketogenic diet is very practical with one。 Vegan keto is harder though not completely impossible。 Lugavere also does not address the ecological and environmental issues with the transportation of foodstuffs over long distances to places where they are not produced or do not grow year-round。 So, to sum up, while this book provides interesting and useful advice on diet, you will have to turn elsewhere if you are grappling with the larger issues about food supply。 。。。more

A great read if you a serious about changing your bodies relationship with what you eat。 Will make you look at the food you eat more closely。

Really interesting! I found a lot of the information helpful when looking at improving my diet for my optimal health!

A good reminder of the interdependence between gut health and our general well-being。 There’s too much processed food in our world right now and we are slowly killing ourselves one meal at a time。 And this book is a good wake up call to reflect on our day to day decisions。 Are we willing to continue and put our body through all that unnecessary stress just for those little moments of sugar rush? The choice is up to us。

I did think it was well written and easy to understand, but ultimately I just felt (really like most of these types of books) that the extremes were obnoxious, occasionally dangerous, and the main advice, information, guidance seemed obvious。 Gluten bad。 Organic veggies and meats good。 Eat your fn wild salmon。 Steer clear of alcohol。 I could hear my nutritionist Kelsey screaming through a lot of the low carb, fasting guidance。 I also didn’t appreciate the section where he encourages vitamin D in I did think it was well written and easy to understand, but ultimately I just felt (really like most of these types of books) that the extremes were obnoxious, occasionally dangerous, and the main advice, information, guidance seemed obvious。 Gluten bad。 Organic veggies and meats good。 Eat your fn wild salmon。 Steer clear of alcohol。 I could hear my nutritionist Kelsey screaming through a lot of the low carb, fasting guidance。 I also didn’t appreciate the section where he encourages vitamin D in place of anti- depression/anxiety meds in “mild” cases。 Bite me。 I’ll take both, thanks。 。。。more

Would have liked more。。Great understanding of why and how different foods behave in our systems。 So full of information I sought a summary or list of foods to focus upon for this compendium of health。

This book changed my life。 I was not aware of the Keto diet。 And I heard about Intermittent Fasting but never tried it。 I've tried the combo and I lost 7 kilos in less than 2 months。 And I didn't have to suffer for it。 I've eaten healthier & more tasty food in the process。 I'll admit that cutting the sugar was the only sacrifice I had to make。The book itself is a little too technical for my taste。 I appreciate that the author backs up his claims, but at times it's too much。 It might even sound d This book changed my life。 I was not aware of the Keto diet。 And I heard about Intermittent Fasting but never tried it。 I've tried the combo and I lost 7 kilos in less than 2 months。 And I didn't have to suffer for it。 I've eaten healthier & more tasty food in the process。 I'll admit that cutting the sugar was the only sacrifice I had to make。The book itself is a little too technical for my taste。 I appreciate that the author backs up his claims, but at times it's too much。 It might even sound defensive at times。 But I guess nowadays with so many fad diets & so many strong opinion about everything, this is a necessity。 。。。more

Can never get enough info on proper nutrition。。。I know, so much is complete BS, such as whatever the US government tells you to eat through their bought and paid for food pyramid or plan or whatever most MD's recommend as a healthy diet。 I did this book on Audible, but as soon as I finished it, I ordered the hardback version as I wanted to be able to go over many points raised therein。 Great book with great eating advise that seems to jibe with my other hero's of the digestion such as Price, Per Can never get enough info on proper nutrition。。。I know, so much is complete BS, such as whatever the US government tells you to eat through their bought and paid for food pyramid or plan or whatever most MD's recommend as a healthy diet。 I did this book on Audible, but as soon as I finished it, I ordered the hardback version as I wanted to be able to go over many points raised therein。 Great book with great eating advise that seems to jibe with my other hero's of the digestion such as Price, Perlmutter, Taubes, and Sisson。 Not much new in this book but a great refresher course on why each of these particular foods are so good for our bodies, specifically, our brains。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It is an informative and easy to understand health and nutrition book。 It does feel like a best guess rather than proven science(to be fair, as he mention as it takes years to take to be officially proven) while capturing many other recent health books content。 It was good enforcement to reminded that our body is complex, all the organs related and generally need to be conscious about what food we eat。

This was a fairly interesting read。 There are tons of things written about food these days but the author tries to take a fairly scientific approach, explaining the biological effects of certain foods。 That part was quite interesting and fairly easy to follow。 Obviously things are much more complex when not taken in isolation and the book touches a little bit upon that。 Overall, the book argues for avoiding polyunsaturated oils (because of their risk of oxidation) while recommending a diet rich This was a fairly interesting read。 There are tons of things written about food these days but the author tries to take a fairly scientific approach, explaining the biological effects of certain foods。 That part was quite interesting and fairly easy to follow。 Obviously things are much more complex when not taken in isolation and the book touches a little bit upon that。 Overall, the book argues for avoiding polyunsaturated oils (because of their risk of oxidation) while recommending a diet rich in fat and low in carbohydrates。 It does have a section for athletes or people who exercise a lot, for whom carbohydrates are essential for health and performance but doesn't go too much into details。 。。。more

Pretty insightful look into diet and cognitive function。 What intrigued me was the authors lack of a background in the field。 I feel as if most reviews reflected negatively on this, but I believe it gave Max a clearer perspective on the topic。 He wanted answers for his mother’s decline as she battled dementia, and he went for it。
