The author argues that the 2020 presidential election was unfair， and she makes a stronger case than the president or his campaign ever did。 But I expected this book to be better。 It would have benefited from some balance， i。e。， the book would have been more interesting and credible if the author had listed which of Trump’s campaign theories were implausible。 This lack of any balance makes it seem like the work of a Trump apologist， which I suppose it is。

another？ How do we know that Democrats will commit fraud in this manner and Republicans won’t？When we Suppose we could prove that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election。 Suppose we knew that we talk about mail-in ballots and the threat of fraud， this is the most important question that no one talks about and this book is no different。I hoped to get an answer to that question when I picked up this book and didn’t get it。 However， I did learn something quite meaningful。 The idea of a “Rigged” election is not necessarily rooted in a fear of fraud so much as it is rooted in a much broader feeling that all the things that impeded Trump’s chances of being re-elected in 2020 were part of a plot by democrats to oust him out of office at all costs。 Trump and his supporters feel cheated and that’s the idea behind Rigged。The arguments in this book come together to support essentially two narratives。 The first is that democrats in the political establishment exploited the COVID-19 pandemic to severely relax laws around mail-in voting and thereby turn it into a widespread practice。 The second is that left-leaning people in the media and tech industries， election administration and in the judicial system all played a part in tipping the scales against Donald Trump。 Republicans like to rig elections by making it harder to vote and by enforcing laws that allow them to reject more ballots。 This is done under the guise of “election security。” It is therefore no surprise that they would be so against the widespread practice of mail-in voting and upset that it led to considerably more people voting in the 2020 election than in any other election。At one point the author openly acknowledges the fact that when more people vote， it benefits Democrats and that Republicans benefit from restrictions。 Another fact that is acknowledged is that in the 2020 election Democrats were far more likely to vote by mail than were Republicans。 It then makes sense why Democrats would be accused of “rigging” when they try to make it easier to vote by promoting mail-in voting or when they try to get more ballots counted despite problems with signatures。 You have to ask yourself though which is actually better for democracy—more people voting or fewer people voting？There are two types of errors a poll worker can make when verifying ballots。 An A-type error is when you accept a ballot that is illegitimate。 A B-type error is to reject a ballot that is legitimate。 Which type is worse？ I would argue that it’s the B-type error。 It’s much worse to reject votes from real people than it is to accept ballots that may be fraudulent。 Republicans seem to be fine with reducing A-type errors at the cost of making more B-type errors by claiming they are working to prevent fraud。Maybe the pandemic was “exploited” to make voting more accessible to more people and maybe it did create more opportunity for fraud， but I see it as a net improvement for democracy。 Mail-in voting is a wonderful thing if it means more people can vote， even if it means more fraud could happen。The second narrative promoted in this book was that democrats and left-leaning people in this country had a personal vendetta against Donald Trump and used all means necessary to thwart his chances of being re-elected。 This included people in the media and tech industries using their influence to control information and the media narrative。 It also included setting the rules for the election in that they bypassed standard procedures。 It included judges in the judicial system who refused to hear suits from Donald Trump’s lawyers。This narrative may be valid， but it takes for granted that it was all unjustified。 In 2016 Republicans chose to support arguably the most divisive presidential candidate in US history。 He got elected on a platform of a war waged against “political correctness” and cancel culture。 It was a “F*** You，” not just to the political establishment， but also to millions of real people all over the country。 Donald Trump and his supporters made a lot of their own enemies。It should be no surprise then that a lot of people wanted him out of office。 It just so happens that a lot of those people were in the media and in the tech industry。 They had the ability to decide what stories to promote and what information could be shared and it’s not unreasonable to believe that’s what happened。The idea that conservative voices are unfairly suppressed by a system where liberals have the power is interesting， given its similarity to another narrative we’re all familiar with。 It’s very similar to the idea of systemic racism。 Instead of people of a minority race claiming to be oppressed by a legal system controlled by the interests of a majority race， people of a political ideology are claiming to have their ideas repressed by a system controlled by the interests of an opposing ideology。 The ironic thing is that people who believe in a rigged election are not likely to believe in systemic racism。 It seems like if you accept one， you should have to accept the other。 I mean the only real difference between the two is that in one， people are getting killed by police and in the other， people are getting their Facebook posts deleted。I guess my main takeaway from this book is that the idea of a rigged election actually has very little to do with fraud。 “Fraud” is a mental frame that Trump and his supporters use to make sense of what they’re really upset about。 They are upset that 1） more people were allowed to vote in 2020 and 2） people whom Trump likes to insult on a regular basis haven’t treated him very nicely。All that said， I hated reading this book， though I’m grateful for the perspective I’ve gained。 Rigged is not really written to convince the nonbeliever so much that it is meant to confirm and validate the feelings of the believer。 If you read this book， chances are you already believe the election was stolen and you feel cheated and wronged by evil communist democrats。 You will feel good to have those beliefs confirmed and those feelings validated。 This book is a great piece of propaganda to that end。 。。。more

This book was well researched and well written。 It goes into a tremendous amount of detail about the various voting systems throughout this country。This book should be used as evidence in a trial regarding voting rights that should be held by various courts and perhaps even the Supreme Court。

I just finished Rigged: How the Media， Big Tech， and the Democrats Seized Our Elections by Mollie Ziegler Hemingway。 The book is worth reading; to a point。 I forget who recommended it。 It illustrates the dictum in intro to Practicing History: Selected Essays by Barbara W。 Tuchman， that it is hard to write good history close to the occurrence of events。 It certainly was， and is。I need to start out by saying that I voted for Trump in 2020 but not 2016。 The book is about the bitterness of the Biden I just finished Rigged: How the Media， Big Tech， and the Democrats Seized Our Elections by Mollie Ziegler Hemingway。 The book is worth reading; to a point。 I forget who recommended it。 It illustrates the dictum in intro to Practicing History: Selected Essays by Barbara W。 Tuchman， that it is hard to write good history close to the occurrence of events。 It certainly was， and is。I need to start out by saying that I voted for Trump in 2020 but not 2016。 The book is about the bitterness of the Biden-Trump election of 2020。 I agree with the fundamental premise that the political process and the election were poisoned by the savage attacks on Trump， both in the press and on the streets and ultimately in the health establishment， starting immediately after his startling victory in 2016。 Trump did not play by the rules， or play nicely。 In general that was a good thing。 Trump did not need， in the process， to gratuitously insult so many people。 Firings of personnel over Twitter are not in the Dale Carnegie school of How to Win Friends and Influence People。 When you choose a leader， however， you are not choosing a drinking buddy。 Also， to make an omelet you need to break some eggs。 Challenging the shibboleths of the Establishment was worthwhile。 Recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel， stepping out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and exiting the Paris Accords upset the Establishment greatlyWhere I believe that the author gets things wrong is by not laying the blame for at least some of the divisiveness on Trump。 In my view and based on the content， if not the conclusions of the book is that he created the atmosphere where defeating him at any cost was an imperative。 That effort started immediately with the effort to delegitimize his election and his Presidency。 It moved on through the various investigations， to impeachment。 Most seriously， it morphed into the weaponization of the Covid-19 pandemic。 Put simply， enough officials throughout Federal， State and local bureaucracies hated him that they were willing to tank the gregarious， happy society we once knew before February 2020。 I only hope we can get it back。 。。。more

“Proof” is an ambivalent term according to ‘McCormick on Evidence’ （1954）， a law school textbook I picked up on a whim a few years back from a Goodwill store someplace。 “Sometimes，” McCormick writes， “when we say a thing is “proved” we mean that we are convinced by the data submitted that the alleged fact is true。”Just so， widespread fraud in the 2020 Election has been proved to my satisfaction and to my mind， though by no means proven to Democrats and establishment Republican types。 Methinks th “Proof” is an ambivalent term according to ‘McCormick on Evidence’ （1954）， a law school textbook I picked up on a whim a few years back from a Goodwill store someplace。 “Sometimes，” McCormick writes， “when we say a thing is “proved” we mean that we are convinced by the data submitted that the alleged fact is true。”Just so， widespread fraud in the 2020 Election has been proved to my satisfaction and to my mind， though by no means proven to Democrats and establishment Republican types。 Methinks they don’t want it proven。 But that is neither here nor there。Good faith participants in such discussions should pick up a copy of Mollie Hemingway’s ‘Rigged: How the Media， Big Tech， and the Democrats Seized Our Elections。’Now I know what you will say。 What’s the point of rehashing this？ What’s done is done， and it’s time to move on。 Whatever happened happened， and whatever didn’t happen matters only in the sense that we need to forget this whole messy business already and move on with life。But Hemingway’s book is a must-read for one very important reason: we are still planning on holding elections in the United States of America moving forward – this coming November， for instance。 Which laws and procedures and technologies and persons safeguard our elections and why will continue to be thorny and entirely relevant questions for so long as we continue having elections。 Here we find the history and rationale for why the safeguards were in place to begin with before they were bypassed in 2020 “due to COVID。” And by looking at what happened when the safeguards were bypassed， we find renewed reason to make certain the safeties are not bypassed or circumvented again。Whatever your political persuasion， you have a vested interest in our nation’s elections being free and fair。 Only legal votes should be counted， and the process for making sure no one cheats has to be clear， transparent， accountable， and verifiable。When the safeguards are bypassed， and when threats and intimidation and misinformation are proliferated even as dissent is censored， we know the result。 The middle half of the country feels disenfranchised， abused， and oppressed rather than empowered and respected。Win， lose， or draw， making a long line of extremely questionable decisions with regards to the vote， then silencing and threatening anyone who dares ask the reasonable questions is bound to engender distrust， animosity， and resentment。For our part as losers， we must not give in to resentment and bitterness if we want to carry the day tomorrow。 “Be quick to listen， slow to speak， and slow to become angry，” James writes in the New Testament， “for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God。”Be calm。 Be cool。 And for all our sakes， be principled and resolute before God and man。 Only in that way will we be able to unrig our political process and seek the welfare of this country God has placed us in and in some measure entrusted us to steward before Him。For more reflections on ‘Rigged: How the Media， Big Tech， and the Democrats Seized Our Elections，’ check out this episode of The Garrett Ashley Mullet Show here。https://thegarrettashleymulletshow。co。。。 。。。more
