Summary

Secrets worth dying―and killing―for, in a novel of suspense inspired by a horrific true crime by Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author Loreth Anne White。

When the battered body of a female jogger is found beneath the cliffs of an idyllic coastal community, these perfect neighbors suddenly don’t seem so perfect…

Lily Bradley is a respected psychotherapist married to a distinguished professor。 They live in a dream house with their two children in close-knit Story Cove。 Lily lives a well-ordered life。 Or so it seems。 As a therapist, she knows everyone keeps things hidden。 Even her。

Then sensual and free-spirited Arwen Harper rolls into town in her hand-painted VW van, her sixteen-year-old son riding shotgun。 Overnight, Story Cove’s secrets are no longer safe。 Because Arwen might know her new neighbors better than they know themselves。

Now someone is dead, and it looks like murder。 Brutal and personal。 The death invites the shrewd eye of Detective Rue Duval。 Rue’s job is to expose secrets。 But she’s also an expert at keeping them。

As the lives of three women become inexorably entwined, one thing is clear: when it comes to survival, ordinary people can do the most terrible things。

holy!!! this book is fantastic!!!It all started decades ago, but we get the backstory in bits and bites。 The story is told through several POVs and over a short period of time before the death of a woman。 Brilliantly written and captivating!! Looking forward to more from this author!

The characters are all very unlikeable, but it's the victim that's the worst。。。 She's a conniving, psychopathic, homewrecker, blackmailing woman。 I only cared whodunit so that I could give them a commendation。 It was still entertaining。 The characters are all very unlikeable, but it's the victim that's the worst。。。 She's a conniving, psychopathic, homewrecker, blackmailing woman。 I only cared whodunit so that I could give them a commendation。 It was still entertaining。 。。。more

I am a huge Loreth Anne White fan, her books are an auto buy for me。 I know that she’ll give me clues throughout the novel, there’ll be threads trailing throughout it, and I still won’t get who did it。 There were a number of times that I had to go back and double check that I’d read what I thought I had。 There’s times when you go “oh this is an important plot point” but you have no idea what it actually means, or “oh, this is a clue” but you still have no idea what it’s a clue to。 I’m a mum, I h I am a huge Loreth Anne White fan, her books are an auto buy for me。 I know that she’ll give me clues throughout the novel, there’ll be threads trailing throughout it, and I still won’t get who did it。 There were a number of times that I had to go back and double check that I’d read what I thought I had。 There’s times when you go “oh this is an important plot point” but you have no idea what it actually means, or “oh, this is a clue” but you still have no idea what it’s a clue to。 I’m a mum, I have a 4yo boy and a 6yo girl。 Honestly, some of the hardest parts of this novel weren’t to do with who was murdered and how that affected their family。 It was the young son of one of the suspects and how he felt; the loneliness, the fear。 It was described so well and really affected me。 I highly recommend this book。 Absolutely brilliant 。。。more

The only reason this wasn't a five star book for me was that the book had too many threads at the beginning and the author wasn't giving quite enough for my mind to follow each one of them。 It definitely evolved over time but I wish there had been just a little more offered towards the beginning。 The only reason this wasn't a five star book for me was that the book had too many threads at the beginning and the author wasn't giving quite enough for my mind to follow each one of them。 It definitely evolved over time but I wish there had been just a little more offered towards the beginning。 。。。more

It's always a good day when I get my hands on a new Loreth Anne White book。 This one was quite dark and twisty, made even darker by the fact that it was inspired by true events。Lily's life is upended when her husband Tom finds a dead body and calls 911。 But Tom is acting really weird, it turns out they both know this woman。。。and everything starts falling apart。I didn't find any of the adult characters very likable (not all the kids, either), but I could not stop reading, waiting for the inevitab It's always a good day when I get my hands on a new Loreth Anne White book。 This one was quite dark and twisty, made even darker by the fact that it was inspired by true events。Lily's life is upended when her husband Tom finds a dead body and calls 911。 But Tom is acting really weird, it turns out they both know this woman。。。and everything starts falling apart。I didn't find any of the adult characters very likable (not all the kids, either), but I could not stop reading, waiting for the inevitable trainwreck to happen! My suspicions changed multiple times, too many suspects to choose from。 There are multiple POV, and every one acts at least a little shady, even the detective! The story is interwoven with chapters about a gruesome murder in a tiny Canadian town that happened 30 years prior。 It's fairly graphic, and knowing it was based on true events made it more so。 Eventually it's revealed how that crime is connected to the present, and it was even more complicated than I had guessed。The only thing I had a problem with was Lily and Tom's children: 12-year-old Phoebe and 8-year-old Matthew。 Both acted several years older than they were and their ages didn't seem to fit。 Especially Matthew, no way I could buy that he was only 8。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 This was a small, close knit neighborhood drama of the best kind, and what made it even better is that it is based on a true crime story。Lily is conducting an early morning therapy session at her home office when her husband comes back from a run in the rain, closely followed by police knocking at the door。 On his run her husband Tom came across a dead body。 Things escalate from here when they figure out who the body is。The story has dual time lines from present day, I really enjoyed this book。 This was a small, close knit neighborhood drama of the best kind, and what made it even better is that it is based on a true crime story。Lily is conducting an early morning therapy session at her home office when her husband comes back from a run in the rain, closely followed by police knocking at the door。 On his run her husband Tom came across a dead body。 Things escalate from here when they figure out who the body is。The story has dual time lines from present day, to a countdown of sorts, counting down to the death。 It is very easy to follow and especially easy to get caught up in this story。 Once I got to a certain point I couldn't put it down and felt myself constantly thinking of what was going to happy。 It took everything in my not to google what the story was based on (and after reading the author's note, I felt even more compelled to google)I would highly recommend this to not only true crime fans but suspense fans in general。 Will definitely look out for more by White in the future。 Thank you to net galley and the publisher for this advance copy! 。。。more

Across the Strait of Juan de Fuca residents can see Washington State’s Olympic Mountains。 Such a stunning location。 Sure, there are secrets。 Murder? Adultery? Mental illness? Vodka bottles under a tween’s bed? Who knows? But every adult knows when the snake enters paradise。 The snake, Arwen Harper, at first is well disguised as an artist, as a bohemian, as the waitress at The Red Lion。 The professors meet for their Friday happy hours at The Red Lion, and the snake works her magic。 Arwen starts shedding her skin when she and her sixteen year old son, Joe, move into a cottage behind a house on the cul-de-sac where two of the university professors just happen to live their idyllic lives。 Just after they move in, Harper and Joe are invited to a neighborhood pool party。 The party ends early because of a dangerous thunderstorm and a devastating fight between Lily and Tom Bradley, and Arwen Harper The next morning Tom Bradley discovers the broken body of a runner at the foot of the rocky cliffs overlooking Grotto Beach, too broken to immediately identify。 The victim partially fits the profile as the work of the Jogger Killer (JK)。 The head of the JK task force, Rue Duval, is called in immediately to investigate。 I have always found Loreth Anne White one of most quotable writers I have read。 I want to share just about every sentence she writes, but I will settle on this quote “…and always-hidden beneath the narratives-are the secrets。 Deep and dark and primal。 Everyone has them。”White brings up various psychological issues in The Patient’s Secret。 A few of the questions concern the rehabilitation of child criminals; questions of race and how an atypical upbringing will impact later life。 The most important question of all, how far would you go to protect your family?I had one big problem with the story, the lead detective, Rue Duval, should have removed herself from the case immediately once the victim was identified。 Rue along with family could all be considered viable suspects。 There are multiple POV's and timelines to follow in The Patient’s Secret, while at the same time the reader needs to follow White's clever shell games。 Keep an eye on White’s shells。 You will never see the pea again, even as she hands you an easy and obvious win to entice you deeper。 For White plays a different game, quickly adding other shells, other peas until you just give up, sit back and enjoy one shocking moment after another。 I should entitle this review “I Never Saw That One Coming”。White is an impeccable writer, her settings are always lovely, but with an undertone of darkness, most of her characters are relatable, despite their smugness or shadows。 Always though, it is her story, her narrative that will leave you wanting more。Thank you to NetGalley, Montlake and Loreth Anne White for a review ARC。 。。。more

Loved it!! The scariest part of the book is that it's based on a true story。 The worst part was who was actually behind the killing of the family。 Arwen's death was a mystery that had me guessing until the very end。 My list of suspects was long, very long。 Pretty much everyone in the book was on my list。 I would have wanted to kill her。 She was extremely manipulative。 Arwen definitely struggled with mental issues, along with drugs, alcohol and her obsession with the Bradleys。 She was consumed wi Loved it!! I am a Loreth Anne White fan girl anyway, but this book took it to a whole other level for me! Knowing from the beginning that this book is loosely inspired by a true crime that happened in Canada years ago gave it an extra spark for me (although I purposely waited until after I finished the book to look up the crime, and I suggest you do as well, as reading about it before will give a key part away, and it's best to go in blind)。 It's an idyllic neighborhood that Dr。 Lily Bradley lives in - unt I am a Loreth Anne White fan girl anyway, but this book took it to a whole other level for me! Knowing from the beginning that this book is loosely inspired by a true crime that happened in Canada years ago gave it an extra spark for me (although I purposely waited until after I finished the book to look up the crime, and I suggest you do as well, as reading about it before will give a key part away, and it's best to go in blind)。 It's an idyllic neighborhood that Dr。 Lily Bradley lives in - until the battered body of a female jogger is found at the bottom of a cliff off one of the running trails, and Lily's husband is the one who found her。 All of a sudden, fingers start pointing and the perfect neighborhood doesn't seem so perfect any more。 As Lily is a respected psychotherapist and her husband is a psychology professor, they are well versed in mental health and know that everyone keeps things hidden - including themselves。 Now though someone is dead - it looks like murder and everyone is connected to the victim。 Enter Detective Rue Duval。 Rue developed notoriety as being the lead detective in an open serial killer case, and she prides herself on exposing secrets。 She immediately sees parallels in this case, but the more she investigates, the more she finds herself trying to keep her own secret connections hidden as well。For a myriad of reasons, this was one of the best thrillers I've read in a long time! There are so many secrets and characters whose lives are intertwined in ways that aren't easily apparent, with spectacular twists that just don't stop coming - there are numerous "could-possibly-be" scenarios interspersed with clever red herrings of events and people - you have no idea who is good, who is not, and who lives in the shades of gray area。 It's not a book where you find yourself liking many of the characters, as they all have rather selfish agendas and questionable morals, but it is an engrossing "whodunnit"。 I think I suspected every one of the characters at one time or another and still wasn't correct, as in the end, I was completely blown away by the turn of events。 Without giving too much away, I was also just as surprised (pleasantly) by who it was not。 I also love the little nuggets of wisdom that always catch me off guard in White's books。 In this one, two of the most poignant quotes that I highlighted were: "People don't live in nicely painted heritage homes in pretty neighborhoods 。。 people live in the six inches of real estate between their ears 。。。 they live inside their heads。 That's where reality resides。" And in referring to the academia world and of the professors being investigated, White penned, "he exudes a controlled energy, an arrogance that Rue finds often with older men who sit in academic towers and pontificate about the world and society's systems while living and operating quite apart from the reality of them。" So many times I found myself re-reading passages in this one saying, "so true!" out loud。 Always the mark of a memorable read for me。 Overall, this is a dark, twisty, page-turner that kept me on the edge of my reading seat until the very last page。 Trigger warning though - there are crimes against children in it, and the detail of the crime scene was graphic, as it was based on the actual true crime。 My favorite White book to-date and in my opinion, a must-read in 2022! All the stars。 。。。more

Anytime someone new moves into the neighborhood, the first question typically on everyone’s mind is… I wonder how they’ll fit in。 (Of course, this includes some good old-fashioned peering through the shades!)
