Summary

To the first boy I ever loved。
I intended to keep my promises to you。 I swear。 I loved you, Matthew Caldwell。 With my whole heart。 I think a piece of me will always love you。
But it all came crashing down when I realized you didn’t keep your promises to me。
I refuse to take any of my days for granted。 I learned that the hard way。
So I’m sorry。 But I can’t keep my promises to someone who didn’t keep theirs。

XOXO,
-Brooklyn Sanders

This was a definite roller coaster! A whole lot is found out, a lot is going on, and I can’t tell you any of it!! Or, more to the point, I won’t。 Because that’s what the book is for。 To experience this in all its glory, you must go in as I did, unknowing before hand。 Trust me, it’s worth it。

In TSSP there is a line about Matt being married to the love of his life 6 months after this book ending。 If that's Brooklyn, that's an awfully quick time to move on after losing Miller。 And if he marries someone other than Brooklyn。。。Honestly, I felt so disconnected with this entire book。 If it had been a standalone, the story was nice。 But as part of a series that I was already so invested in, it felt like an afterthought and not even part of the original storyline。 I felt no emotions for the story, just confusion。 I don't get why people are saying this is the book we needed。 We needed the answers as to why she left and didn't come back yes, what we didn't need was another love story to completely overshadow the original and make it damn near impossible to realistically walk back to a Matt and Brooklyn reunion。Ivy is a great writer, I love her world creation and character development。 I love how she can make me love or hate a character so intensely。 I wanted this book so bad, I obsessed over theories for the 9 months we waited for this book and I'm so disappointed at the lack of direction and answers to get this back on track。 It has left me with very little hope of the story continuing its path from books 1-3。If I had known that Matt and Brooklyn ended this way, I don't think I would've started the series。 I'm invested at this point, so I will read EH6 when it comes out to see if Ivy somehow tries to put them back together but honestly I don't see how。 If Matt gets with Kennedy in any capacity moving forward then I'll be done with the series。 It's not the story I wanted or needed unfortunately and I'd rather tell my brain that the series sadly ended with Brooklyns death in EH3 and that will be my ending。I love tragedy and drama as much as the next person but hope is moreso important and EH4 and EH5 took the hope away。 Very sad。 。。。more

This book was not at all like i expected。But it was worthwhile reading if you are caught up in the world that Ivy has built。This book answers many questions from books past and aligns with other books in Ivy's sphere。But it also sets up books Ivy will probably put out going forward。This book is fun, whimsical, dramatic, emotional as Brooklyn navigates what her life has become。 Some by forced choices, some by choices of her own。But it's an integral part of the Empire High series。And there are so This book was not at all like i expected。But it was worthwhile reading if you are caught up in the world that Ivy has built。This book answers many questions from books past and aligns with other books in Ivy's sphere。But it also sets up books Ivy will probably put out going forward。This book is fun, whimsical, dramatic, emotional as Brooklyn navigates what her life has become。 Some by forced choices, some by choices of her own。But it's an integral part of the Empire High series。And there are so many pieces of unexpected parts you just never see coming。Can't wait for what's next。 Because yes, this ends on a cliffhanger。 。。。more

Oh。 My。 God。 I'm literally stunned by Ivy once again。 Let me give you a quick little tidbit about my relationship with Ivy books: James and Penny have always been my number one favorite couple she has written。 No one else has ever come close for the love that I have for James and Penny。。。 until this book。 We were all wondering where Ivy was going to take us with the ending of the last book。 To catch you up to speed: Brooklyn and Matt were in love and set to get married (in high school) in a mont Oh。 My。 God。 I'm literally stunned by Ivy once again。 Let me give you a quick little tidbit about my relationship with Ivy books: James and Penny have always been my number one favorite couple she has written。 No one else has ever come close for the love that I have for James and Penny。。。 until this book。 We were all wondering where Ivy was going to take us with the ending of the last book。 To catch you up to speed: Brooklyn and Matt were in love and set to get married (in high school) in a month。 That was until Brooklyn played a prank with the Hunter brothers, pissed off Matt, left broken hearted to a home where her father literally tricked her into giving him her kidney and faked her death。 Then, Matchmaker came out and we see what Matt's been up to in the 16 years since Brooklyn "died。" That book ended with Brooklyn showing up on her BFF, Kennedy's, doorstep all these years later, very much alive。 So, what was going to happen in this book? Were we going to find out what Brooklyn's been up to all these years, who did she end up with, did she still love Matt, Mattlyn vs Mennedy, who was that kid, etc。 When I say that this book threw me for a loop and surpassed all my expectations, I wholeheartedly mean it。 I'm not going to spoil this book because it came out about 12 hours ago but what I will say is that this book broke me in all the gut-wrenching ways and Ivy created the most beautiful story she's EVER written。 I did NOT expect the storyline that happened here and I think that's what makes it all the better。 It was such a genuine, pure storyline that made my heart fall madly in love。 This book now holds my number one favorite couple and my favorite story。 Definitely read the books prior to this but this is absolutely marked down as a favorite of 2022 already and a DEFINITE recommend from me。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book was a huge disappointment。 Brooklyn found comfort in Miller, but never loved him the way he deserved。 While Matt grieved her, she resented him for “moving on。” She has no firsts left to give Matt… honestly those firsts were what had kept me strung。 There’s nothing left。 I’m just saddened that one of my favorite book couples has gone to crap。

This book is simply amazing! I cried a lot deep from my heart。 Ivy Smoak has the ability to make you enter and live her stories, but this book is another level。 This books is the story of Brooklyn and Miller。 Brooklyn is alive and was in a beach house with Miller after the surgery where she "donate" one of her kidneys to his dad。 At the beginning she was full of grief, trying to understand her new life as "dead", a little bit ironic。 She saw her friends and her fiancee, Matt that move on after h This book is simply amazing! She decided to fight back, for her, for Jacob, for Miller, for her family。 Brooklyn is back in NYC, broken again but she is now a different woman。 I read most of Ivy's books, but this one is another level。 Touch me deep in my heart。 I can't wait for the next one。 A MUST READ BOOK!!!! Highly recommended!!! 。。。more

**E-ARC provided in exchange for an honest review。 Let me start by saying this book sort of flipped the switch for me, and got me all worked up and a little bit heart broken。Also, I don’t want to tell you too much about it because it will be sort of spoilery and I want you to enjoy this story at its fullest, because it deserves it。It was hard to come to that conclusion, but believe me this book is everything you need。Again, I won’t be able to tell you much, but here is what I believe is safe to **E-ARC provided in exchange for an honest review。 Let me start by saying this book sort of flipped the switch for me, and got me all worked up and a little bit heart broken。Also, I don’t want to tell you too much about it because it will be sort of spoilery and I want you to enjoy this story at its fullest, because it deserves it。It was hard to come to that conclusion, but believe me this book is everything you need。Again, I won’t be able to tell you much, but here is what I believe is safe to say。Also, if you have not read Matchmaker, get out of here and go read that one, then come back so we can discuss!Brooklyn is not really in the picture for Matt for 16 years we know this because of the events of Betrayal and Matchmaker。 She is dead and she had to stay dead, initially not because she wanted to, but because she was forced to。The key word in that sentence is “initially。” She goes through a pretty though grieving process of what her life was even before she met Matt, what her life could have been, what her life is and what her life could be。Same as Matt, Brooklyn can’t cope with the idea of not being with him, of loving him and having a life where they cannot have their happily ever after。But against what some of the readers might believe she did try to go back to him, sadly she had been feed so many lies that at the first sign of those lies actually being “true” she took the decision to choose herself and take a second to figure out what would be best in this new life。Even though the decision wasn’t easy for her to make, there was someone who had been and always would be on her side (I really want to tell you who it is, but the second you begin reading this book, you will know who I am speaking of!) so she ultimately decided to give happiness a chance and go for him and the life they could create together。Runaway answers that million dollar question of where Brooklyn has been all of this time and why she is back now。Why after all these years she is back to potentially be in the Empire High alumni lives again。It will also completely destroy your heart。If you don’t cry toward the end of reading this book, I don’t believe you are a human being with real actual feelings。Honestly I’ve only read a few books by Smoak, but this one is by far the most intriguing, most heartbreaking and most captivating of them all。I can assure you, your heart is not prepared for this。Be ready to cry with Brooklyn, make decisions with Brooklyn, fall in love with Brooklyn, be in love with Brooklyn and be devastated and in war mode with Brooklyn。Whatever book 6 is about… I。 Am。 Freaking。 Ready! 。。。more

Well, you didn’t even know you needed this book。 You didn’t even know you wanted it。 Brooklyn survives the worst things you can imagine, taken away from everyone she knew and loved (except one person), forced into isolation and told everyone she knew is better off with her gone, happy even。 Brooklyn must overcome all of her fears to break away from the prison her father puts her in。 Does it take time? Yes。 Does she live during this time? Yes。 Is she miserable and missing Matt? Yes。 Is she slowly falling in love with another, the only person she is allowed to see? Yes。When Brooklyn, badass that she is, finally brings her escape plan to fruition she frees her cell mate and returns to tell Matt she is ALIVE。 But, time has passed and Matt moved on, or so Brooklyn thinks from what she witnesses。 Brooklyn leaves。 All those from her past have moved on, and it is dangerous to reveal she is alive, that b*tch Isabella is her biggest fear。 As she settles into a town alone and time passes, she realizes she doesn’t want to live this way。 And finds her way home, to Miller, the person she set free from her father’s grip and the man she spent years with and desperately misses。As the book progresses you watch their life together unfold。 Years of healing, and growing, and for a long time, they are happy, they have love and family and joy。 The life they live together is beautiful。 Miller is everything to Brooklyn and visa versa。 Their story is tremendous and together a baby is born from their love。 That baby brings with him a happiness neither of them had ever known。 Together they made a life where they are free, and happy, and in love。 But all good things come to an end, especially for Brooklyn。This life, this happy and beautiful life they created is gone in an instant。 Miller, sweet Miller who I have always loved, is taken from her。 In a horrible and permanent way。 And no that is not the end of Runaway。 Because our girl is furious, and wants revenge, and she returns to where it all started in that apartment complex in NYC。 Would I say Kennedy is shocked to see Brooklyn?? Yes, I would! How about Brooklyn with a baby in tow? Oh yea! You can see their friendship has survived all these years, and Kennedy jumps to help Brooklyn no questions asked。 As Brooklyn tells her son goodbye and the book ends, I felt nothing but hope。I hope she finds her revenge。 I hope she finds her happiness again。 I hope she finds her way to her friends again。 I hope she can live。 I hope Kennedy and Matt can forgive Brooklyn for staying gone。 What will happen next, and how will Matt react to her being alive? How does this epic love story play out? I can’t wait for book 6 to find out the next step in our journey。 I have no idea what I even want to happen anymore, lol。And yes, I truly loved Brooklyn and Millers life together。 He took a beating that nearly killed him to be with her and protect her, he left everything behind and when she needed it, he gave her time, when she was ready, he was there with open arms because he had always loved her。 I will always be happy for their time together。 And grateful for the baby they created, he is a piece of Miller she will always be able to keep。 。。。more
