Summary

Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett’s job has many times put his wife and daughters in harm’s way。 Now the tables turn as his wife discovers something that puts the Pickett family in a killer’s crosshairs in this thrilling new novel in the bestselling series。

A day before the three Pickett girls come home for Thanksgiving, Marybeth Pickett finds an unmarked package at the front door of the library where she works。 When she opens the package she finds a photo album that belonged to an infamous Nazi official。 Who left it there? And why did they leave it with her?

She learns that during World War II several Wyoming soldiers were in the group that fought to Hitler’s Eagles Nest retreat in the Alps—and one of them took Hitler’s personal photo album。 Did another take this one and keep it all these years? When she finds the name of a deceased local man who was likely in the unit, Joe visits the man’s son—only to find him brutally tortured and murdered。 Someone is after the photo album—but why? And when a close neighbor is murdered, Joe and Marybeth face a new question: How will they figure out the book’s mystery before someone hurts them…or their girls?

Meanwhile, Nate Romanowski is on the hunt for a younger and more ruthless version of himself—the man who stole Nate’s falcons and attacked his wife。 Using a network of fellow falconers, Nate tracks the man from one city to another, learning that his target is an agitator and a financier of anarchists。 Even as he grasps the true threat his quarry presents, Nate swoops in for the kill—and a stunning final showdown。

Have read and enjoy all Joe Pickett novels。 The last one left a real cliff hanger that was satisfied in #22。 But。。。#22 leaves the reader with a there will be more to come thought。 Not a completely satisfying ending。 Understand the author wants to make sure the readers keep coming back。

Joe Pickett is back。 It is Thanksgiving and just as his daughters come home a man is found brutally murdered。 His wife has brought home something donated anonymously to the library, a historic Nazi scrapbook。 His friend Nate is also in trouble, his falcons have been stolen and he is chasing the man responsible。 There are essentially 2 stories in this book。 It is definitely a page turner with plenty of suspense from page 1。 I had a hard time putting it down。 Thank you to net galley for an advance Joe Pickett is back。 It is Thanksgiving and just as his daughters come home a man is found brutally murdered。 His wife has brought home something donated anonymously to the library, a historic Nazi scrapbook。 His friend Nate is also in trouble, his falcons have been stolen and he is chasing the man responsible。 There are essentially 2 stories in this book。 It is definitely a page turner with plenty of suspense from page 1。 I had a hard time putting it down。 Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy。 。。。more

Good。 Like the last one, this is a good story。 But, is lacking in intensity, I understand that authors run out of steam, but it is infuriating to read it happening ! There is a lot of action but no adrenaline, almost no emotion。 Should you read this ? Only if you’ve read the rest of them, for completeness。 Good but not that good。 Shame。

Another Joe Pickett winnerC。J。 Box is a must-read author of mine。 I've read all of his books (this is the 22nd in the Joe Pickett series alone) because I appreciate his writing and I love Wyoming。 This book is definitely another winner。Joe's always finding trouble in these books but in this installment his wife Marybeth finds a package left at the library she heads up and discovers a lost Nazi photo album from WWII。 And it seems that someone wants to get their hands on it at ANY cost。It's Thanks Another Joe Pickett winnerC。J。 Box is a must-read author of mine。 I've read all of his books (this is the 22nd in the Joe Pickett series alone) because I appreciate his writing and I love Wyoming。 This book is definitely another winner。Joe's always finding trouble in these books but in this installment his wife Marybeth finds a package left at the library she heads up and discovers a lost Nazi photo album from WWII。 And it seems that someone wants to get their hands on it at ANY cost。It's Thanksgiving time and the daughters are all headed home and it looks like it could be dangerous at Joe and Marybeth's house。Meanwhile Nate Romanowski is aggressively hunting down the man who attacked his wife and stole or killed all his birds in book#21。There's all kind of action in this book, as there is in all Pickett books。 There's blood, guts and violence, so be warned。 I love the characters, as always。 And I hear there's going to be a new Joe Pickett TV series so I hope they do justice with this favorite character of mine。I highly recommend this whole series and all of C。J。 Box's books。I received this book from Putnam Books through Edelweiss in the hopes that I would read it and leave an unbiased review。 。。。more

I get just as excited for the next one and I did the first ones。 Each book seems to center around some social justice issue that Box wants to explore。 Finding a way to put Wyoming Game Warden, Joe Pickett, into the thick of it and destroy yet another vehicle。 This book was no different: Nazi's and Antifa are the issues Box chose to highlight Shadows Reel。 Rest assured, however, both are explored without really any biases (like there is some other acceptable stance regarding Nazi's)。 And as far-fetched as the Nazi storyline seems the author's notes will explain that it was based on truth。 In Shadows Reel Joe's wife, Marybeth, the local librarian, is anonymously gifted a photo album of one of Hilter's inner circle。 While Joe stumbles across more than one body。 And his best friend, Nate, a falconer, picks up where the last book left off; chasing down the man who stole his birds and harmed his wife and child。 Joe and Marybeth's story runs parallel to Nate's coming together at the end。 While all the regular characters make an appearance, including all of Joe's daughters, the piece that was really missing for me was the great outdoors。 None of this book takes place in nature, which I think is part of why I love this series so much。 But nonetheless I tore through this book at lightning speed and here I am again: left impatiently waiting for the next Joe Pickett。 I can not recommend this series highly enough and while I enjoyed this book, I absolutely recommend any newcomers to Saddlestring, WY start at the beginning。 You won't be sorry。 Many thanks to #NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam Publishing for providing me with an advanced copy of #ShadowsReel in exchange for my honest opinion。 。。。more

As with all C。J。 Box stories, Shadows Reel (GP。 Putnam 2022), Book 22 of the Joe Pickett series, is clever, fast moving, and about human desires like family, loyalty, and love of animals most of us relate to。 Joe Pickett is a game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming。 That doesn't sound dangerous, but in the hands of Joe Pickett, who can't turn his back on injustice and is a dog with a bone when faced with a puzzle, mysteries abound that must be solved。 In this case, there are two and neither of Joe' As with all C。J。 Box stories, Shadows Reel (GP。 Putnam 2022), Book 22 of the Joe Pickett series, is clever, fast moving, and about human desires like family, loyalty, and love of animals most of us relate to。 Joe Pickett is a game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming。 That doesn't sound dangerous, but in the hands of Joe Pickett, who can't turn his back on injustice and is a dog with a bone when faced with a puzzle, mysteries abound that must be solved。 In this case, there are two and neither of Joe's making。 His wife Marybeth is head librarian of the local library and receives an anonymous gift of a photo album including authentic Nazi images。 It could be simply a resource for the WWII collection until people start dying associated with it and Joe's family ends in the crosshairs of a man who wants that photo album to himself。While that is going on (did I mention this occurs during the Thanksgiving holiday?), Joe's best friend, Nate Romanowski, is on the trail of the thief who stole his entire collection of ten falcons and killed three more and attacked his wife。 Not only did it put Nate out of business, but Nate raised those birds since they were chicks。 They were almost family to him, a man who is closer to his birds than to most people。 That they are stolen, possibly abused, faced with illegal owners who may not respect their majesty puts Nate in a black mood that is not healthy for anyone associated with this crime。 The fact that the thieves may be tied to BLM and Antifa doesn't even slow Nate down。Another excellent story that just never slows, never stops, and introduces a few delicious twists that will have to be addressed in future books。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I think this book may have been my least favorite so far of the series。 While I know that the author often has a political agenda in mind。。。pipe lines, wind mills for energy, etc。 I was not real thrilled to read about antifa and BLM riots。 I knew that the book would continue from the last with Nate pursuing Soledad, the man who had stolen his birds and beaten up his wife。 I did find the bits about the Nazi photo album at least interesting and was not too surprised at the lengths the family went I think this book may have been my least favorite so far of the series。 While I know that the author often has a political agenda in mind。。。pipe lines, wind mills for energy, etc。 I was not real thrilled to read about antifa and BLM riots。 I knew that the book would continue from the last with Nate pursuing Soledad, the man who had stolen his birds and beaten up his wife。 I did find the bits about the Nazi photo album at least interesting and was not too surprised at the lengths the family went to in getting it back。。 It was good to have the girls back home, but not much was said about them。 It sounded like perhaps he ws going to explore April's thoughts of being a private investigator。 Might she be working with her dad? 。。。more

I love that Box, without noticeably taking sides, writes about extremist views of various groups and characters-- some the people we are rooting for-- and some the villains。 He touches on the humanity, or the psychopathy, or the wrongheadedness of every single person we meet and what each person does makes sense and is consistent with their values (not always good ones)。 I find I relate to even the most tangential people I meet along the way。 Box writes with some humor, e。g。, when Joe rescues a victim's mutt and names it "Bert's Dog。" Pay attention to his short and totally descriptive chapter titles。 They are often amusing in their succinctness and information。 As always, Box portrays through the eyes of his characters the beauty of Wyoming, life in a small town in the least populated state in the USA and Wyoming's emotional draw to those born there as well as those who happen upon it。 I only realized that the series is now a television show on Spectrum "Joe Pickett," when I tried to buy a boxed set of the initial books in the series to save money per book。 Instead, these boxed sets are now enormously costly so I had to settle for buying the first five books at a President's Day sale on a book site。 。。。more

But it is the fantastic cast of characters that inhabit these stories and make them so great。 This book has two different levels; someone is murdering elderly people while a Nazi photograph album shows up at the library run by Joe’s wife, Marybeth。 This is an excellent twist because Marybeth becomes an active participant in solving the crime。 But we also have the beloved Nate, who is going after a rogue falconer who stole his prized birds。 Nate, along with another falconer, go into Washington State hunting a hardened ex-special ops agent。 Nate may have finally met his match when it comes to an evil guy that he has to “handle。” I want to encourage you to read all of the books in this series。 They are well-written, with excellent pacing。 If you start with book one, you will go straight to Shadows Reel next year。 Fantastic stories, great characters who are very human and relatable, and so much more。 Read this book! #joepickett #wyominggamewarden @cjboxnovels @penguinrandomhouse @netgalley #netgalley #arc #nazis #murder #mystery #antifa #stolenfalcons #thriller #washingtonstate #specialops #shadowsreel #wyoming 🌲Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the opportunity to read this book which was delightful。#reading #books #bookstagram #book #booksofinstagram #JustBooksBookstagram #bookish #lindaleereads2021 #mmdbookclub #readinglife #modernmrsdarcy #december ❄️ 。。。more

Shadows Reel by C。J。Box Adventure, mystery, suspense and likeable characters。 First Joe Pickett book for me and definitely not the last。 Am looking for the author's back list to read more about Joe, Marybeth and Nate。 Interesting series。Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book。 Shadows Reel by C。J。Box Adventure, mystery, suspense and likeable characters。 First Joe Pickett book for me and definitely not the last。 Am looking for the author's back list to read more about Joe, Marybeth and Nate。 Interesting series。Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book。 。。。more

I'm a huge fan of CJ Box's Highway series but never got to grips with Joe Pickett until Dark Sky which ended with a cliffhanger。 Anxious to know how the story resolves, i was lucky enough to get a review copy from Netgalley。Shadows Reel has an unlikely plot that according to the author’s notes is rooted in fact。 Be that as it may the idea of Hungarian Nazi murderers in Wyoming wasn’t really convincing。 The book has 2 concurrent stories and the more interesting one follows Joe’s friendNate Romano I'm a huge fan of CJ Box's Highway series but never got to grips with Joe Pickett until Dark Sky which ended with a cliffhanger。 Anxious to know how the story resolves, i was lucky enough to get a review copy from Netgalley。Shadows Reel has an unlikely plot that according to the author’s notes is rooted in fact。 Be that as it may the idea of Hungarian Nazi murderers in Wyoming wasn’t really convincing。 The book has 2 concurrent stories and the more interesting one follows Joe’s friendNate Romanowski on a mission to track down the psycho who stole his falcons。 Shadows Reel is a fast enjoyable read and great if you just want to pass some time but mainly this is just pandering to fans of the series and totally dispensable for any new readers。 。。。more

I can't believe there has been 22 of these books。 Some are better than others。 I liked this one but it wasn't one of my favorites。 Nate is going after Axel who beat up Liv in the last book。 Mary Ellen arrives at work the day before Thanksgiving to see an older man lurking around the library and he leaves her a package。 The book is told in alternating chapters between them with a few other folks interspersed。 The book left at the library is a photo album that belonged to a Nazi who was hung after I can't believe there has been 22 of these books。 Some are better than others。 I liked this one but it wasn't one of my favorites。 Nate is going after Axel who beat up Liv in the last book。 Mary Ellen arrives at work the day before Thanksgiving to see an older man lurking around the library and he leaves her a package。 The book is told in alternating chapters between them with a few other folks interspersed。 The book left at the library is a photo album that belonged to a Nazi who was hung after Nuremburg。 After she received the book, the body of a man was found burned to death。 What is the connection? Nate travels to Denver and with the help of another falconer, starts on his search for Axel。 Usually the Nate parts are some of my favorite parts。 This one, not as much。 I was off put by all the antifa stuff。 The photo album part of the book was good。。。Led me into some google searches。 Another solid book in the series。 。。。more

I haven’t met a Joe Pickett book I didn’t like, and this next one in the series due out next year is no exception。 There are two parallel storylines here, one featuring Joe and his family。 The other has Nate Romanowski as he tracks down the ruthless monster who terrorized his family and stole his falcons in the last book。 I loved the fact that Joe’s wife is figured prominently in this narrative and how important her investigation skills are to Joe。 They make a great team。 The ending?
