Summary

A fierce, funny, and revolutionary look at the queens of the animal kingdom

Studying zoology made Lucy Cooke feel like a sad freak。 Not because she loved spiders or would root around in animal feces: all her friends shared the same curious kinks。 The problem was her sex。 Being female meant she was, by nature, a loser。

Since Charles Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been convinced that the males of the animal kingdom are the interesting ones -dominating and promiscuous, while females are dull, passive, and devoted。

In Bitch, Cooke tells a new story。 Whether investigating same-sex female albatross couples that raise chicks, murderous mother meerkats, or the titanic battle of the sexes waged by ducks, Cooke shows us a new evolutionary biology, one where females can be as dynamic as any male。 This isn‘t your grandfather’s evolutionary biology。 It’s more inclusive, truer to life, and, simply, more fun。

There were some aspects of this book I absolutely loved。 Overall, the science writing is excellent, with everything well explained。 Lucy Cooke puts her journey into the story, giving me more of her perspective。 She writes with a great sense of humor and some very clever wording。 The footnotes are definitely worth reading。 On the less favorable side, some of the sarcasm in her writing doesn’t really work for me。 I also found that the beginning and end of the book didn’t really match the rest of t There were some aspects of this book I absolutely loved。 Overall, the science writing is excellent, with everything well explained。 Lucy Cooke puts her journey into the story, giving me more of her perspective。 She writes with a great sense of humor and some very clever wording。 The footnotes are definitely worth reading。 On the less favorable side, some of the sarcasm in her writing doesn’t really work for me。 I also found that the beginning and end of the book didn’t really match the rest of the content, which threw me off。 Nonetheless, this book is definitely worth reading and is an excellent example of good science writing。 Thank you to Netgalley and Basic Books for the advance reader copy。 。。。more

I found bitch to be an incredibly interesting book to read and found it to be very well written。 She uses a wide range of different animals from different areas and types to emphasise her point and give evidence to why things occur。 Due to the amount covered it will take a while to read, I found myself only able to take in a chapter at a time。 I received an early copy of Bitch from netgalley for review。

Thank you so much to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review。 "Bitch" by Lucy Cooke is a fascinating and incredibly empowering non-fiction book, which takes the readers on a journey through the true role of the females in numerous species。 It is very informative to the point that sometimes I felt a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information I had to comprehend, so take your time when reading it。 The writing style made it easy to connect with the content of the Thank you so much to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in exchange for an honest review。 "Bitch" by Lucy Cooke is a fascinating and incredibly empowering non-fiction book, which takes the readers on a journey through the true role of the females in numerous species。 It is very informative to the point that sometimes I felt a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information I had to comprehend, so take your time when reading it。 The writing style made it easy to connect with the content of the book and truly enjoy it。 The book made me proud to be a woman and helped me embrace my femininity, so definitely read it in case you need to be reminded how strong women are。 。。。more

I received a copy from the author at a retreat and it truly was a pleasure to read。Lucy takes you through the animal kingdom, with her unique perspective perspective on the females。 She manages to convey scientific evidence in such an easy to understand manner, pairing it with her own experiences in the wild and in our human society。 She takes you on a journey through continents and how species across the world live, socialize and mate。 The book certainly takes the female perspective and does no I received a copy from the author at a retreat and it truly was a pleasure to read。Lucy takes you through the animal kingdom, with her unique perspective perspective on the females。 She manages to convey scientific evidence in such an easy to understand manner, pairing it with her own experiences in the wild and in our human society。 She takes you on a journey through continents and how species across the world live, socialize and mate。 The book certainly takes the female perspective and does not stop at the animal kingdom - sometimes explicitly and sometimes in-explicitly challenging our human societal systems and believes。 She manages to do so in a light and a subtle humorous way, even when she goes after Darwin (whom she assured to appreciate a lot - besides his Victorian male bias)。 Just to pick one: The chapter on gender in the animal world did certainly make me smile more than once and left me stunned about all the curiosities this world has to offer。 I cannot wait for the book to finally get published to read though all chapters with more time and to give it to my friends - female and male! 。。。more

My thanks to Basic books, Lucy Cooke and Netgalley。 Let's just get one thing straight, and that is the fact that Lucy just rocks my socks off。 What she does is always done well! All my best friends ever have always been bitches。 Yep, I was happily their bitch too! Probably one of the most empowering and informative books I've ever read。 Even though the focus is on the animal kingdom, I felt kinship with some of the females in various species。 I enjoyed the anecdotes, the science and the ongoing challenge to the patriarchal conceptions of females in the wild。 Well-researched and easy to follow, even for the non-scientist like me。 Probably one of the most empowering and informative books I've ever read。 Even though the focus is on the animal kingdom, I felt kinship with some of the females in various species。 I enjoyed the anecdotes, the science and the ongoing challenge to the patriarchal conceptions of females in the wild。 Well-researched and easy to follow, even for the non-scientist like me。 。。。more

Recieved as an E-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 This book was a true intellectual delight。 I learned quite a bit about the females of the animal kingdom that I hadn't known and it was all presented with a wry wit and cheeky thumbing of the nose at the patriarchy。 Going through scientific history, the myopic and misogynist lense of western culture, and introducing the trailblazers that have and are presenting the truth of life on this planet, Lucy Cooke has presented to the Recieved as an E-ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 This book was a true intellectual delight。 I learned quite a bit about the females of the animal kingdom that I hadn't known and it was all presented with a wry wit and cheeky thumbing of the nose at the patriarchy。 Going through scientific history, the myopic and misogynist lense of western culture, and introducing the trailblazers that have and are presenting the truth of life on this planet, Lucy Cooke has presented to the world a beautiful tome about life, sex and gender in all its myriad iterations and splendor。 This book proves in more ways than one that bitches rule the world。 。。。more
