Summary

From the award-winning audio drama team that brought you Radio Theatre's "Amazing Grace" and The Chronicles of Narnia。 In his enduringly popular masterpiece "The Screwtape Letters, " C。 S。 Lewis re-imagines Hell as a gruesome bureaucracy。 With spiritual insight and wry wit, Lewis suggests that demons, laboring in a vast enterprise, have horribly recognizable human attributes: competition, greed, and totalitarian punishment。 Avoiding their own painful torture as well as a desire to dominate are what drive demons to torment their "patients。" The style and unique dark humor of "The Screwtape Letters "are retained in this full-cast dramatization, as is the original setting of London during World War II。 The story is carried by the senior demon Screwtape played magnificently by award-winning actor Andy Serkis ("Gollum" in Lord of the Rings) as he shares correspondence to his apprentice demon Wormwood。 All 31 letters lead into dramatic scenes, set in either Hell or the real world with humans--aka "the patient," as the demons say--along with his circle of friends and family。 This Radio Theatre release also stars Geoffrey Palmer ("Tomorrow Never Dies"), Laura Michelle Kelly ("Sweeney Todd"), Eileen Page ("The Secret Garden"), and other world-class actors。 Includes 10 new songs inspired by the classic book, four behind-the-scenes video documentary featurettes, and a 5。1 surround sound mix。 Four CDs, approx。 4 hours total。

I liked the letter format however the language was written quite unique and at times understanding was difficult

Very good。 Characters are built well and have meaning despite their flaws。 It drags in places but it’s very good at making you question their goals and your own personal opinions。

After years of being told that I needed to read this book—I finally did! I understand why this is a classic。 C。S。 Lewis came up with an incredibly clever and witty way to communicate his observations of the Christian spiritual life through Uncle Screwtape。 This is both entertaining and challenging。 Glad I finally read it。

Not a book I expected from CS Lewis。 I was very pleasantly surprised。

I love this book SO MUCH。 I don't normally care for non-fiction, but this was pure GENIUS。 It's essentially the pov of one demon (named Screwtape) writing letters to his imaginary lesser demon nephew, Wormwood。 In using this method of allegorical communication, Lewis calls out a number of issues, both in the Church (as he sees it) and in the life of a Christian。 I think it's brilliant, and extremely well written。 I think that probably Christians would most enjoy this, but anyone with a good sens I love this book SO MUCH。 I don't normally care for non-fiction, but this was pure GENIUS。 It's essentially the pov of one demon (named Screwtape) writing letters to his imaginary lesser demon nephew, Wormwood。 In using this method of allegorical communication, Lewis calls out a number of issues, both in the Church (as he sees it) and in the life of a Christian。 I think it's brilliant, and extremely well written。 I think that probably Christians would most enjoy this, but anyone with a good sense of humor, a bit of intellect, knowledge of the Church can get a good laugh and more than a few insights out of it! Overall, this book was really interesting。 It allows readers to potentially see the world from the eyes of Satan and his demons。 The book is about two demons working together to try and prevent the young, Christian man from deepening his Christian faith。 They give each other advice in letter format on how to "win him back to evil"。 It was really eye-opening to see the Christian life or even just the human life from a new perspective, and it made me think about some of my own choices in life。 Whi Overall, this book was really interesting。 It allows readers to potentially see the world from the eyes of Satan and his demons。 The book is about two demons working together to try and prevent the young, Christian man from deepening his Christian faith。 They give each other advice in letter format on how to "win him back to evil"。 It was really eye-opening to see the Christian life or even just the human life from a new perspective, and it made me think about some of my own choices in life。 While C。S。 Lewis is a Christian author, I think his books are great for all people and religions。 His writing style is very unique, and just like The Chronicles of Narnia, I think even non-believers would enjoy the entertaining story he has written in this book。 。。。more

This is a classic that is still a very good book。 The letters are from a tempter in hell to his uncle, who is a high ranking satanic demon。

Every Christian should read this book。 And reread it。 C。 S。 Lewis has such a gift, and these words will always be relevant, no matter how much time passes and how the world changes。

I had wanted to read one of C。S Lewis’s adult books especially as a child I’d enjoyed the Narnia stories and still enjoy reading them to my children。 The concept of it being a tempter writing to his nephew interested me so when my daughter was gifted a copy I was keen to read it。I did find it hard going and took me a long time to read with it being in the form of letters without replies and I did find it didn’t keep me as interested。That said there are interesting concepts in his book which are I had wanted to read one of C。S Lewis’s adult books especially as a child I’d enjoyed the Narnia stories and still enjoy reading them to my children。 The concept of it being a tempter writing to his nephew interested me so when my daughter was gifted a copy I was keen to read it。I did find it hard going and took me a long time to read with it being in the form of letters without replies and I did find it didn’t keep me as interested。That said there are interesting concepts in his book which are still surprisingly relevant today given that it was written 80 years ago。 It was originally published in a newspaper as individual letters so they could be read without having read the others so this may be why I felt a lack of flow through the book。 。。。more

This is C。S。 Lewis's practical manual of living a good life。 Told in the format of a series of letters sent from senior demonic 'tempter' Screwtape to junior demonic 'tempter' Wormwood, it teaches the precepts of Lewis's Christianity, from the perspective of those who might try to undermine and destroy the faith。I've been slightly critical of the Lewis view of Christianity in the past。 It seems to me that Lewis is keen to encourage a view of Christianity which is very mainstream to him, as an An This is C。S。 Lewis's practical manual of living a good life。 Told in the format of a series of letters sent from senior demonic 'tempter' Screwtape to junior demonic 'tempter' Wormwood, it teaches the precepts of Lewis's Christianity, from the perspective of those who might try to undermine and destroy the faith。I've been slightly critical of the Lewis view of Christianity in the past。 It seems to me that Lewis is keen to encourage a view of Christianity which is very mainstream to him, as an Anglican。 In this text, he discourages the reader from exploring different approaches to faith, rejecting the idea that Christians should 'shop around' to find a church that they like。 I'm not really sure that Lewis is always offering good advice。 I feel like the brand of Christianity that he promotes is much harder to follow than he thinks it is, since it does (to a significant extent) require switching off one's critical faculties, and following Lewis's directions, all the while being sure not to question them too much。 Questioning, Lewis claims, is how the demons get to you。Also, one other comment: the wife that is mentioned in this book - the idealised wife - who appears around the mid-point, seems not so ideal to me。 In fact, she doesn't sound all that fun to be around at all。 And Lewis is very quick to emphasize also that she is a virgin。 She is described (admittedly by a demon) as 'demure' and 'mouse-like'。 I do think our contemporary expectations of women are rather different now than they were back then。 And I'm not sure that it's because our culture has 'fallen', or anything like that。All of that said, this book does have the charm and wit of C。S。 Lewis at his best。 Despite essentially being a story about Christian morality, it is engaging throughout, and it has more than a few scenes that are actually very funny。 Lewis really had a certain charisma as an author, and it shows here as much as ever。 。。。more

The book describes the temptations the "patient" faces across the course of his lifetime。 His demon tempts him, while the demon's uncle advises him on what to do。 I really loved this book。 As humans, we all face some kind of temptation。 These letters felt like therapy and it really hit for me。 Writing has always been a type of therapy, but this book brought a whole other meaning to writing as therapy。 I believe those who enjoy digging deep into books would enjoy this, as well as Christians who a The book describes the temptations the "patient" faces across the course of his lifetime。 His demon tempts him, while the demon's uncle advises him on what to do。 I really loved this book。 As humans, we all face some kind of temptation。 These letters felt like therapy and it really hit for me。 Writing has always been a type of therapy, but this book brought a whole other meaning to writing as therapy。 I believe those who enjoy digging deep into books would enjoy this, as well as Christians who are searching for a way to fight their temptations。 。。。more

Probably my third or fourth time reading this book。 Remains excellent。 At insight, and at conviction and a reminder of all the subtle ways we allow ourselves to fall, to sin, to indulge in folly。

Timing is everything with a book: I began this book at least twice over the past twenty-five years, but found it too dry to continue。 But the third time was the charm。 I found it, in short, electrifying。 And prescient, and frightening, and absolutely spot on regarding development of thought and (or not) God。 Highly recommend to all Christian readers。

This book had a creative premise but was hard to get through。 I did find it interesting to think of some of the examples of “bad” behavior the devils were plotting to encourage, and to reflect on whether or not I agreed with the moral stance the author was taking。 But overall - a rather dry read。

Lewis never fails to deliver legendary theology and writing。 This book is no exception。 It could definitely be used as a Bible study。 I know I will have to read it again to attempt to fully grasp everything in it。 Very, very good。
