Summary

Most mothers hope their little girl turns out like their dad, but not Zoe。 She hopes the apple falls far from the tree。

Zoe didn't meet her daughter the way most mothers do。 She finds five-year-old Maddie alone and dirty on a countryside road。 Frightened for Maddie's safety, she picks her up and takes her back to her father, not knowing what she's about to step into。 Because Maddie wasn't just lost, she was there to lure her serial killer dad's new victim。

After escaping from the clutches of Maddie's dangerous father, she bonds with the little girl。 Only Maddie knows what it was like to be at that house。 And when no family members come forward to claim Maddie, Zoe decides to adopt her。 They move away to a safe house on the Cornish coast and become a family of their own。 Zoe gets married and has another child, a baby brother for Maddie。

But Maddie is still traumatised by what she experienced。 Diagnosed with callous and unemotional traits, Zoe has a tough job to ensure Maddie has the love and support she needs。 Zoe truly loves her daughter—she wouldn't change a thing about her。 But there is a part of her that always stays alert。 A part of her is afraid of Maddie。

And now, eleven years later, Maddie's school bully is found dead, and another girl is missing。

Zoe can't help but wonder。。。 like father, like daughter?

The next gripping, emotional thriller by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of SILENT CHILD。

spoiler alert!!!Two words: open ending。 I hate that。 I want a clear ending and a resolution。 I want answers, not unsolved mysteries。 I enjoyed the story and if you don’t mind open endings, you may enjoy this。 But personally, I can’t stand reading a book and it ending on a question mark。 But that’s just me

For most of the book, the chapters alternate between the present and 12 years prior when Zoe meets Maddie。 Thankfully, in this case both timelines were compelling, it didn't leave me wanting to get back to the other。The past scenes were pretty grisly, what Zoe goes through is pretty horrific。 She bonds with Maddie and decides she wants to foster/adopt her。 Maddie isn't like other kids, I found her funny in brutal kind of way, but also kind of scary。 Zoe isn't quite sure what to make of her daugh For most of the book, the chapters alternate between the present and 12 years prior when Zoe meets Maddie。 Thankfully, in this case both timelines were compelling, it didn't leave me wanting to get back to the other。The past scenes were pretty grisly, what Zoe goes through is pretty horrific。 She bonds with Maddie and decides she wants to foster/adopt her。 Maddie isn't like other kids, I found her funny in brutal kind of way, but also kind of scary。 Zoe isn't quite sure what to make of her daughter either, she's quite protective but admits to herself that Maddie makes her uneasy。The story had some good twists that surprised me, and one that did not, but it kept me glued to the page。 I've read most of this author's work, and this is one of her better books。 The epilogue was quite clever, leaving a question mark for the reader to answer。 。。。more

I love her。 She scares me。 Eleven years ago, Zoe found a lost little girl on the side of the road。 Her name was Maddie, and she wasn't lost at all。 Her Dad had left her there on purpose to lure unwitting victims to him to sate his serial killer habits。 But with luck and bit of help, her and Maddie manage to escape his cruel clutches and survive - and soon they have a bond that only people who'd been in that house of death could know。 They become a family, and Zoe adopts Maddie in a heartbeat whe I love her。 She scares me。 Eleven years ago, Zoe found a lost little girl on the side of the road。 Her name was Maddie, and she wasn't lost at all。 Her Dad had left her there on purpose to lure unwitting victims to him to sate his serial killer habits。 But with luck and bit of help, her and Maddie manage to escape his cruel clutches and survive - and soon they have a bond that only people who'd been in that house of death could know。 They become a family, and Zoe adopts Maddie in a heartbeat when she realises nobody else is coming for her。 Now, years later, on the surface things look shiny and new - Zoe is married, Maddie has a new baby brother, they have a beautiful home and they're safe。 But underneath, neither of them every got over what happened。 Zoe loves Maddie, even if she's still traumatised by what her Father did and has been diagnosed with severe emotional disorders。 She's Zoe's daughter … but she's also her Fathers daughter。 So when Maddie's school bully goes turns up dead, followed by a string of other local girls, eyes turn to Maddie。 And Zoe wishes she wasn't suspicious, but she starts to wonder if she knows her Daughter at all。 My Perfect Daughter is a hauntingly thrilling tale of death and devotion - with all the disquiet eeriness of a classic horror mixed with explosive thrills and heart-racing twists。 Told through Zoe's perspective, in two timelines, we build a picture of a life trying to recover, and see Maddie through the lens of a loving Mother, but still manage to portray the complex, somewhat twisted personality she displays and the intensely complicated relationship between them。 The chapters were short, snappy, and easily had me flying through the pages, always giving me just enough to know I had to keep reading。 Every red herring or reveal had me hooked, and we watched on in suspense as Zoe tries to figure out who or what is happening。 Violent, visceral and bloody, this isn't the story to read if you're fainthearted - but underneath all the gory goodness is a layered story, full of blurry lines between good and bad, intricate plots and the depth that a Mothers love can really go to。 。。。more

This is amazing crime book which it told in two timelines - we meet Zoe and Maddie - one timeline we met them when the horrible, extremely brutal thing happen to Zoe and second timeline is their life after … Life after and before are full of illustrations of very complicated yet beautiful relations between these two characters。I think the question without an answer - nurture or nature is explored in an amazing and in depth way。Another great story line is relationship between partners and child ( This is amazing crime book which it told in two timelines - we meet Zoe and Maddie - one timeline we met them when the horrible, extremely brutal thing happen to Zoe and second timeline is their life after … Life after and before are full of illustrations of very complicated yet beautiful relations between these two characters。I think the question without an answer - nurture or nature is explored in an amazing and in depth way。Another great story line is relationship between partners and child ( in this case adopted child ) and how the outside circumstance change the dynamic within the family。The actual plot I found very interesting and unpredictable- I kept changing my mind about who is the *bad * guy so many times。Very good crime book with many aspects which made me think about what we think is right and the attitudes towards right or wrong。。。。。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded to 4 for Goodreads。This was a great premise and the writing was gripping - I didn't want to put the book down。I loved the relationship between mother and daughter and how that evolved over time - it wasn't always plain sailing due to their bond through trauma。 I also liked the flicking back and forth between "then" and "now" - it fit well unlike some other books that have tried to do that。 The ending was definitely the perfect way to finish the book。It's really hard to mention 3。5 stars rounded to 4 for Goodreads。This was a great premise and the writing was gripping - I didn't want to put the book down。I loved the relationship between mother and daughter and how that evolved over time - it wasn't always plain sailing due to their bond through trauma。 I also liked the flicking back and forth between "then" and "now" - it fit well unlike some other books that have tried to do that。 The ending was definitely the perfect way to finish the book。It's really hard to mention points I didn't like without giving spoilers。 One big twist was blindingly obvious to me, and I don't understand the attitudes taken before it was revealed - it didn't seem to match up with personalities built up beforehand。 Additionally, there was a character that I thought was going to be something else due to how they were written, but they weren't。 However, hearing the authors original plans for them, it made a lot more sense。Overall, I enjoyed the writing style and most of the plot, but some things dampened it for me。 That said, I will certainly be checking out other books by Sarah in the future。*I received a complimentary copy of the e-book from InstaBookTours and am voluntarily leaving an honest review。 。。。more

This book had me hooked within the first five chapters and that should say A LOT。 The synopsis was intriguing and the execution was impeccable。 The strained relationship between Maddie and Zoe as mother and daughter was extremely frustrating at times and heartwarming at others - which I assume was the author’s goal。 There were times I totally understood Maddie and her dark sense of humor, inability to behave appropriately in uncomfortable situations, and overall morbidity she carried with her。 But there were also times where I was frustrated and didn’t understand why she couldn’t just fully accept the love being given to her。 However, when you learn more and more about Maddie’s childhood, it starts to make sense。 I really enjoyed the alternating timelines between “then” and “now” and getting a glimpse at how the relationship between Maddie and Zoe began and how it go to be where it was at present time。 I’ll admit I figured out the twists (yes, plural) pretty easily but there were still smaller surprises contained within each twist that really made the whole plot come full circle。 If you figure out the twists, it won’t ruin the whole story for you。 This was my first read by Sarah Denzil and will not be my last。 Highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a fast paced thriller - both full of suspense and psychological twists。 My Perfect Daughter is available to the public on February 27, 2022。 。。。more

Does "bad blood" mean a child is destined for the same problematic life style that their genetic parents had? Can love really be enough to repair any broken foundations in behavior developments? For some reason, women love to read about gruesome murders and chilling situations。 Perhaps it is because we try to work out what we would do if faced with a similar threat。 Whatever the reason, many of us are drawn to thrillers and we spend our time figuring out all of the twists and turns。Yet every now and then a thriller comes along that manages to wrong foot us all。 My Perfect Daughter is one such book。It’s utterly unputdownable。 There aren’t enough books that make me want to stay up late re For some reason, women love to read about gruesome murders and chilling situations。 Perhaps it is because we try to work out what we would do if faced with a similar threat。 Whatever the reason, many of us are drawn to thrillers and we spend our time figuring out all of the twists and turns。Yet every now and then a thriller comes along that manages to wrong foot us all。 My Perfect Daughter is one such book。It’s utterly unputdownable。 There aren’t enough books that make me want to stay up late reading, but I was hooked and read the whole thing in a few hours。 There’s something about the unknown and the idea that an innocent can be guilty that makes it compelling。 And the ending is left open to interpretation, making us reconsider everything we think we know and come to our own conclusion。The two stories come together well, as we learn more about what happened before when Maddie was a small child and how they saved each other。 It provides a macabre backdrop for what comes next… The descriptions of torture and death are graphic but not glorified; they enhance the story without being unnecessarily gruesome。Characters are well-written and developed。 The relationship between Zoe and Maddie is believable, yet sinister。 After everything they went through, it’s incredible they’ve both managed to rebuild their lives。 Maddie is the perfect sullen teenager with a stepfather; torn between loyalties, her attitude is expected, but frustrating。Zoe is someone to be admired and respected, although I do question why she is so trusting, considering her background, and how she makes her money… one would expect her to be more wary, rather than reveal so much of herself to strangers。The first twist will not be a shock to seasoned thrillers, but the final ending may not be what you expect and could leave you with many unanswered questions and a racing heart。 。。。more
