Summary

All aboard a train bound for… murder。

Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant。 But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Bakerloo。 As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes。 Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart。

Who gave this defenceless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt’s close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers’s compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is in fact a cross-country killer。

But when Kitty’s prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped。 Until she makes the connection between the two victims and realises that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind。 Can she stop them before they strike again? Or will Kitty’s own next stop be the graveyard?

A pitch-perfect and totally gripping Golden Age historical cozy mystery! Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, T。E。 Kinsey and Lee Strauss。

Kitty Underhay had been looking for information about her mother。 She is finally ready for closure now that she is certain about who is responsible for her mother's murder。 In fact, her new fiancé, Captain Matthew Bryant, is called into play when he is tasked to briefly house Simon Travers, a witness as to what happened to Kitty's mother。 As Kitty and Matthew head to the train station to pick up his soon-to-be houseguest, they discover that he is dead, killed during the train ride。 The fact that Kitty Underhay had been looking for information about her mother。 She is finally ready for closure now that she is certain about who is responsible for her mother's murder。 In fact, her new fiancé, Captain Matthew Bryant, is called into play when he is tasked to briefly house Simon Travers, a witness as to what happened to Kitty's mother。 As Kitty and Matthew head to the train station to pick up his soon-to-be houseguest, they discover that he is dead, killed during the train ride。 The fact that the compartment he was riding in only contained a few other travelers, discovering the murderer should be easy。Kitty is determined to discover the murderer, thus she begins to make inquiries。 However, things do not prove easy as the very individual she is certain committed the crime is also murdered。 Even more determined than ever, Kitty feels she now has two murders to solve。 Matthew plays his own role, as his former employer expects him to find answers。One of the passengers on the train is someone that Kitty is not all that fond of, Mrs。 Craven, but Kitty has no doubt she had nothing to do with the murder。 Despite her dislike of the older lady, Kitty finds herself interested in what she has to say。 Meanwhile, Kitty recently was on holiday, with only a few days left until she is back to managing her hotel, The Dolphin。 In fact, while investigating, Kitty often wonders what her future will hold when she marries Matthew。What a delightful book in a thoroughly enjoyable series。 Each book was intriguing, and no doubt will always leave the reader guessing。 This series has definitely grown on me and I love that each book is fresh and exciting。 One thing I really enjoyed about this book is that the first murder victim was traveling with his dog, leaving the pet without anyone to care for him。 Matthew quickly adopts the mischevious animal, and this brings another enjoyable layer to this lovely story。 I am already looking for the 9th book in this series, Murder at the Country Club, set for release in just a few months。Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review。 This is my honest opinion。 。。。more

Murder in First Class by Helena Dixon is a coy taking place in England after World War II。 Things have loosened up for society and its strict lines of demarcation, as well as the place in the world for women。 Women have many more opportunities for something more than menial work。 Take Kitty Underhay for instance: she and her grandmother ran a hotel and she and her fiancé were private investigators。 Matt, Captain Matthew Bryant, was retired military and military intelligence。 They had just become Murder in First Class by Helena Dixon is a coy taking place in England after World War II。 Things have loosened up for society and its strict lines of demarcation, as well as the place in the world for women。 Women have many more opportunities for something more than menial work。 Take Kitty Underhay for instance: she and her grandmother ran a hotel and she and her fiancé were private investigators。 Matt, Captain Matthew Bryant, was retired military and military intelligence。 They had just become engaged and were still adjusting to that reality。 Matt had been married before and had a child。 His wife and child were killed in a bombing raid during the war and he was still adjusting to that sometimes。 He was older than she was; that didn't bother them, but it did bother others, like his parents。 As much as he avoided being pulled back into his former profession, it happened sometimes。 Like this morning, when his former boss had called about a key witness in a jewelry store holdup who was being threatened。 Since they suspected a mole in the office, none of the normal safe houses could be used。 They were sending him to Matt to stay for a few days。 When he and Kitty arrived at the train station to retrieve him, there was a commotion。 Someone was dead。 You guessed it: it was Matt's guest。 The whole thing took place in a railway car with seven people, no one came or left, and no one from the outside entered。 Talk about a conundrum。At the same time as all of this, Kitty was to go visit the only man that could tell her why her mother had been murdered, years before。 Permission had finally come through。 This visit proved to be more harrowing than one might expect。 Dixon has written a charming series。 It's pretty formal but has interesting characters to add to that already charming mix。 She puts together a variety of inter-related characters, so full of personality and background, that it seems almost true。 That is the way life can be。 The plot was good, almost a locked room mystery, a type of English mysteries made popular a century before。 The writing was smooth, pacing was good, and everything in it made sense, if a bit dependent on luck。 It is fun to read。 Kitty and Matt are good characters and Dixon has us cheering for them。 I like it。I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Murder in First Class by Bookoutre, through Netgalley。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 #netgalley #bookoutre #helenadixon #murderinfirstclass 。。。more

The murder of Simon & then Billy at first seem puzzling but as the pair dig deeper secrets & revelations about the others travelling in the train compartment are revealed。 There are twists & turns as well as red herrings & surprises。 I just love this series & look forward to each new book, so far I’ve not been disappointed。 I read this captivating cosy mystery in two sittings。My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read 。。。more

In this 8th Miss Underhay Mystery, Kitty and her fiancé Captain Matthew Bryant are asked by the Brigadier (Matthew's former boss) to watch over a man who gave testimony in a trial in London。 They head to the railway station to pick up him up so he can spend some time with Matt, but before the train unloads, they hear an ear-splitting scream。 Mrs Craven, Kitty’s grandmother's friend and a pain in the butt to Kitty, was at the door to the first-class carriage, yelling that a man had been murdered。 In this 8th Miss Underhay Mystery, Kitty and her fiancé Captain Matthew Bryant are asked by the Brigadier (Matthew's former boss) to watch over a man who gave testimony in a trial in London。 They head to the railway station to pick up him up so he can spend some time with Matt, but before the train unloads, they hear an ear-splitting scream。 Mrs Craven, Kitty’s grandmother's friend and a pain in the butt to Kitty, was at the door to the first-class carriage, yelling that a man had been murdered。 Matt has a bad feeling and he is right, it was Simon Travers, the man that was supposed to hide out with Matt。 Someone in that carriage had to be the murderer。 Inspector Greville not only gives his blessing, but encourages Matt and Kitty to investigate。 With Kitty having a week off from the Dolphin Hotel, they have lots of time to ask questions and poke around。I continue to enjoy this historical cozy mystery series。 I really like both Kitty's and Matt's characters。 They have such a great relationship and I love how they treat one another, work together to solve the mystery, have each other's back and their great banter。 They are both quite intelligent and can fit the clues together to solve the crimes or puzzles。 I love how Helena Dixon combines the mystery with Kitty's life and her family's history。 There are some sub-plots that have been ongoing involving the person who murdered her mother many years in the past and boy, did it ever add some excitement and tension。 The murder of Simon Travers only had a small pool of suspects, but trying to figure out which of them were guilty kept Matt and Kitty busy。 I will say I was pretty sure who the killer was, but I didn't know why。 I was correct, but the story behind the characters was a shocker。 I would be remiss if I didn't mention mischievous, Bertie。 Matt takes Travers' dog home with him and he keeps them on their toes as well as adding some humor to the story。 This was a great addition to this series and I am definitely looking forward to what is next for Kitty Underhay and Captain Matthew Bryant。 I recommend this series to those who enjoy an historical fiction mystery or a cozy mystery with a great setting, characters and story。 The publisher generously provided me with a copy of the book upon request。 The rating and opinions shared are my own。 。。。more

It should be a very simple murder to solve yet no one saw or heard anything。 After another death, and a request to find a long ago abandoned baby - Matt and Kitty start to put the pieces together - how the Tower Hill Robbery, the murder on the train and the identity of the baby are all linked together。 Kitty pushing to have a meeting with Ezekiel in prison, has a frightening encounter with him。 We may not have seen the last of this murderous family。Kitty and Matt are being pressured by Kitty's grandmother and Mrs。 Craven to set a wedding date。 This is where the story leaves off with them having picked a date but also with a threat from Esther Hammett。 As always I feel that 5 stars are not enough for Miss Dixon's books。 I'm very much looking forward to the next book in the series。 。。。more

I received a copy of this title from the publisher; all opinions are my own。 Murder in First Class is the eighth title to feature Miss Kitty Underhay。 The main mystery of the book can be read as a standalone, but there is a overarching story involving Kitty's mother that doesn't work as well without having read previous titles in addition to the development of Kitty and Matt's relationship throughout the series。 Recently engaged, Matt and Kitty find themselves once again involved in a murder whe I received a copy of this title from the publisher; all opinions are my own。 Murder in First Class is the eighth title to feature Miss Kitty Underhay。 The main mystery of the book can be read as a standalone, but there is a overarching story involving Kitty's mother that doesn't work as well without having read previous titles in addition to the development of Kitty and Matt's relationship throughout the series。 Recently engaged, Matt and Kitty find themselves once again involved in a murder when Matt is asked to provide a place for a witness to a jewelry store heist doesn't survive the train trip。 The matter is much more complicated then quickly determining which of the 7 other passengers in the compartment did it (with the exception of being able to rule out Mrs。 Craven)。 There is more than meets the eye to most of the passengers。 In addition to trying to figure out the murder's identity, Kitty is trying to obtain an interview with Ezekiel Hammett to help her finally get closure on her mother's death。Overall, this is my favorite title in the series; I thought the mystery was extremely strong and I enjoyed the continued growth of both Kitty as an individual and Kitty/Matt as a couple。 I am not sure how I feel at the development revealed at the end of the book, but I will continue to read additional titles in the series to see if Kitty and Matt make it down the aisle。 。。。more

There is a very satisfying, Christie-esque cast of suspects, all realistic products of the time period and red herrings abound within their little group。 I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own。 This comes highly recommended, I loved it。 。。。more

I love this series! I have read all the books and enjoyed every one of them so much! This story combines the main murder plot as well as very clever subplots about the train passengers and the story of Kitty's mother is moving forward as well。 Kitty and Matt are such a great and lovable couple, I'm excited to see their relationship grow and bloom :-) Thank you to the publisher who provided me with an e-copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 I love this series! I received a free ARC copy of this via NetGalley and the publishers in return for an unbiased review。 I do love this series, especially the growing relationship between Kitty and Matt。 This was an interesting mystery, tying together the proceeds of a jewellery robbery, a woman who’d had to give up a baby years ago, and then the murders of two people connected to the heist。 Lots of guessing going on! Another Gray entry to the series, I’m already looking forward to the next one。。。

I love this series, so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Murder in First Class。This time around, Kitty and Matt (and the police) are trying to solve the mystery of a man murdered in a train carriage。 Only the passengers in that carriage had access, so surely it should be easy? It very much isn’t though, and I had a wonderful time reading as Kitty and Matt poked into everyone’s lives!I also loved reading about Matt and Kitty’s continuing relationship, and the ongoing saga with her mother’s murd I love this series, so I was thrilled to receive an ARC of Murder in First Class。This time around, Kitty and Matt (and the police) are trying to solve the mystery of a man murdered in a train carriage。 Only the passengers in that carriage had access, so surely it should be easy? I absolutely love this series! Murder in First Class combines a first-rate mystery with the ongoing gripping sub-plots relating to heroine Kitty’s family history and love life。 On the mystery front, I couldn’t work out who’d done it and thoroughly enjoyed trying to piece the clues together。 Meanwhile the sub-plots ramped up the tension nicely! I love Kitty’s no-nonsense, determined character。 It’s a true pleasure to spend time with her and her fiancé Matt。 Looking forward to the next book alread I absolutely love this series!
