Summary

River of Shadows is an adult dark fantasy romance based on Finnish mythology and the underworld of Tuonela。

When 24-year old Hanna Heikkinen's estranged father dies, she reluctantly makes the trip to Northern Finland for his funeral。 Being in the enchanting land of ice and snow feels miles away from Hanna's busy life back in Los Angeles, especially under the complicated circumstances。

But when Hanna discovers that her father's body is missing, that's when things really get weird。 A mysterious man, Rasmus, tells Hanna the truth: her father was a powerful shaman who went into Tuonela, the Realm of the Dead, in order to barter for more life, and has been held captive by Tuoni, the God of Death。 The only way her father can be freed is if she travels with Rasmus into the mythical underworld to rescue him。

Willing to do anything to have a second-chance with her father, Hanna accompanies Rasmus into the dark and bloody realm, traveling via the River of Shadows, stalked by dangerous creatures, monsters, and the living dead, until they finally come into the haunted kingdom ruled by Death and his family。

Only for her to be captured and held prisoner by the God of Death himself。

Turns out Death is intrigued by Hanna's beauty and fierceness and makes a bargain with her。 If she marries him, and spends an eternity in the Realm of the Dead as his wife, he'll set her father free。

But even the most noble sacrifices come with hidden costs, and Hanna's might involve the most unexpected of all things: her heart。

This took me a little while to get into but I did enjoy it! If you're looking for an Underworld, falling in love with a God (he's the God of death!), this would be a good book! This was good。 I loved the spice, I just wish it was longer。 The dirty talk had me swooning。 I felt like there was some disconnect between death and Hanna’s relationship。 I also felt like there were times were they acted out of character。 It ends on a cliffhanger and I will most likely read the next book to see how things go。 It’s a good book but nothing new, I’ve read 3 more just like it。

Soooo good!I could not put this book down, not an exaggeration。 I finished it in one 3 hour stint and it was so amazing。 I loved the world, the mythology, the dark beauty, I cannot say enough for this author。 This is the first book I've read by Karina Halle and I'm absolutely blown away。 I am looking forward to the sequel。 Soooo good!I could not put this book down, not an exaggeration。 I finished it in one 3 hour stint and it was so amazing。 I loved the world, the mythology, the dark beauty, I cannot say enough for this author。 This is the first book I've read by Karina Halle and I'm absolutely blown away。 I am looking forward to the sequel。 。。。more

This was a great introduction to the God of Death, and he is a possessive and demanding god! Hanna came to Finland for her father's funeral, only to find that he's not so much as dead but lost in the Underworld。 Guided by her father's apprentice Rasmus, Hanna descends into Death's world in order to find him。 While her father Torben is a powerful shaman, he is no match for the God of Death, who agrees to trade Torben's life for Hanna。 Hanna then becomes Death's prisoner, the only mortal to live in the Underworld。 While she could've wasted away, she's ironically more lively in the Underworld。 She looks better, is learning more about herself rather than stuck living in a cyclical, underwhelming life。 Instead of being a "basic bitch," she seems to be thriving and working towards some sort of purpose for her life。 There's some power inside her that's dormant, and maybe it takes Death's love to unleash it。 Hanna's whole play in the Underworld is to get Death to fall in love with her。 They have a ton of hot sex, though Death is really hard to get to know。 He's constantly in a mask, has a painful past, keeps Hanna a prisoner and at arm's length。 There's more to Death than what we know here about him, so I can't wait to find more about him and his past, and to see how Death and Hanna's romance will develop。 。。。more

Wow ok。 This book caught me by surprise。 In the beginning, I was skeptical and worried that it wasn’t going to get interesting but mannnn it did。 The cliffhanger left me frustrated as I expected。 I cannot wait for book #2 in April。

He’s a skull wearing primal MFer。 He’s everything I adore in an anti-hero。 And when it comes to Hanna, he’s possessive, yet somehow still respectful。 🖤✨Seven of Swords — betrayal and deception。 Be careful of whom you trust。 You could even be deceiving yourself。“…you are playing a game with me, aren’t you? I just don’t know if you’re ready for the game。”What starts as a captor/captive situation slowly becomes much less defined。 There is more to Tuoni than the realm her commands。 And Hanna starts to see more of the man behind the mask。 But, with a prophecy thrown into the mix and overwhelming need to reunite with her father, Hanna struggles to accept her fate。If you’re looking for a dark mythology-based romance read, this one fits the bill! I love that it’s Finnish mythology and I adore the way the author artfully weaves in the beautiful descriptions and fantastical elements。 Give it a go! 。。。more

These fantasy-mythology-infused romance books have got me 10000 times more excited to read than ever, and it's a testament to Halle's strength that she was able to write about grief after experiencing her own。 While that's a 5 star from me for pure will and strength, the story itself is also 5 stars, and you can BET that I will be reading more Underworld Gods。 Halle, you've made a reader outta me, and I'm a loyal one。 Thank you for writing this beautiful book that made me feel alllll the feels。 These fantasy-mythology-infused romance books have got me 10000 times more excited to read than ever, and it's a testament to Halle's strength that she was able to write about grief after experiencing her own。 While that's a 5 star from me for pure will and strength, the story itself is also 5 stars, and you can BET that I will be reading more Underworld Gods。 Halle, you've made a reader outta me, and I'm a loyal one。 Thank you for writing this beautiful book that made me feel alllll the feels。 。。。more

It was dark, I fell in love with these dark and moody vibes。 It felt wonderfully atmospheric, something I adore in books。As soon as we arrived in the Underworld the story really started and I liked this mix of ancient gods and them knowing modern slang and having ikea stuff all over。😂 I enjoyed this humour a lot!But also the characters were lovely。 Death’s daughter and Bell were definitely my favourites, but Sarvi was great as well - I wish he had more screen time to be honest。 I had my theories about Rasmus, but only toward the end did one thing in particular really click into place and seeing it confirmed shocked me a little。 I’m sure there will not be a good outcome there…And when it comes to Death and Hanna… I feel like Hanna is not yet done fighting her feelings, but I am pretty sure she found where she belongs and not only because Death might actually be nice and satisfies her good。😂 But like actually belongs… there are signs and I *want* them to be true so bad lol, but we will see。 And Death? Even though we don’t get to experience the story from his perspective I feel like he might be the deepest character of all。 There are so many layers that I think the author is still going to uncover for us there and I am So。 Looking。 Forward。 To。 It。!!!!I really REALLY liked this book。 It’s dark, atmospheric, there are secrets and hidden depths, there is sure to be some betrayal coming our way and hopefully some genuine emotion in book 2, cause this is definitely a #SlowburnRomance I can’t wait!! <33 。。。more

This book was so much more then I expected。 Hanna is a total bad ass but the entire time I caught myself rooting death。 Which i did not expect! This book hooked me from chapter one and I loved every word。 Highly recommend

cliffhanger!! ughNot gonna lie。 I hate cliffhangers。 There’s no need。 Seriously。 I am used to Karina’s contemporary romances。 I didn’t enjoy the vampires but this wasn’t terrible。 I would have liked more character building including the side characters。 Not sure I care much about the heroine to wait for the next book。

3。5⭐️There were a lot of things I liked about this book, the unique world building, intrigue and mix of danger with romance。 I do feel like it lacked some depth in places and that the beginning felt more like the middle of a book。 I think the pacing was off a little for me, everything at the beginning happened so fast but if it were a little slower and there was more tension before the baddies were known as bad, that would have been good! I liked the journey through the underworld but also felt that could have been a little slowed down and more depth added。 I kept waiting for the plot to really take off, especially with the MC’s abilities, but it never really did。 The MC was a surprisingly passive character which would be fine for the first half of a book, but she never really had that moment where she took things into her own hands。 Also the present tense kept throwing me off (personal preference lol)。Overall, this was good I just felt like it could have been more。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this one! Not surprising, for the most part I enjoy everything Karina writes。 It was almost a little too close to Beauty and the Beast for me at times - but that's my favorite Disney movie and I do enjoy twists on the tale, so it wasn't that big of a deal to me。 I really enjoyed getting lost in a new world, new species and terrain that was well described by the author so you can really feel like you are there。 Can't wait for book 2!
