Summary

From the bestselling author of the DI Amy Winter series comes a thriller about a shocking disappearance—and the village that has conspired to keep the truth buried。

Ten years ago, the Harper family disappeared。 Their deserted cottage was left with the water running, the television playing cartoons, the oven ready for baking。 The doors were locked from the inside。

Overnight, the sleepy village of Nighbrook became notorious as the scene of the unsolved mystery of the decade, an epicentre for ghoulish media speculation。

For crime journalist Naomi, solving the case has turned into an obsession。 So now, with Ivy Cottage finally listed for sale, it’s her chance to mount an investigation like no other。 And her husband and stepdaughter don’t really need to know what happened in their new home… do they?

But Nighbrook isn’t quite the village she expected。 No one wants to talk to her。 No one will answer her questions。 And as she becomes increasingly uneasy, it’s clear that the villagers are hiding something—that there is something very dark at the heart of this rural idyll。 And the deeper she digs, the more it seems her investigation could be more dangerous than she ever imagined… In raking up the secrets of the past, has she made her own family the next target?

Excellent mystery story, well worth a read。 Didn't expect the twist at the end, really good。Liked the story immensely, yes, a little bit creepy and tense in parts, but the flow of the tale and the veracity of the characters made it a very exciting read。 Excellent mystery story, well worth a read。 Didn't expect the twist at the end, really good。Liked the story immensely, yes, a little bit creepy and tense in parts, but the flow of the tale and the veracity of the characters made it a very exciting read。 。。。more

What are the villagers of Nighbrook afraid of that Naomi could discover?Unfortunately I did find Naomi’s behaviour and actions quite bizarre from the outset and, also, quite selfish。 On occasion I felt the plot stretched my imagination a bit too far, but the writing was solid enough for me to persist。Overall The Village is a sinister read, at times reminiscent of an Edgar Allan Poe adaptation。 With a very creepy cast of characters set in a small country village unwelcoming of newbies, The Village is a disturbing tale with more than one unexpected twist and turn。 。。。more

so brilliant Ivy farm was in the heat of the new first, away fie towns just Small village beat by Naomi was a ex journalist。 Who had became obsessed with the story of Ivey cottage 10 years earlier。 When a family of 3 just literally vanish into thin air。 It’s a real haunting book。 I don’t mean haunting as in Ghost。 I mean in the sense of sadness and what local people。 The lengths they go to protect a secret。 Fast passed twist and turns, leading to a suppressing ending a Must Read

There's more! There were two almost rescues; an unexpected relationship。 another unexpected relationship; a bad guy who started out good and we could've had sympathies for him, so him being actually evil didn't make sense。 The final, final reveal -- I never saw it coming。 It made sense。 It made everything else make sense。 It gave me the why that I really needed。 Even so, every question doesn't need to be answered in the wrap-up of a story, and an author should trust the reader to be able to make connections。 For example, the author showed us how the antagonist was evil which means that she didn't actually need the good guys to point out that he did a good thing in the past, but he totally tried to kill everyone so he's evil。 Despite my one criticism, overall, this is a good story。 I'd read more by this author。 She weaves a good mystery that kept me interested until the end。 Two days later, I'm still thinking about the book, so it was worth the read。 。。。more

Especially when you plan to make a living out of baking cakes! I’m a bit ambivalent about the whole book, it didn’t scare me, or have me frantically turning pages but it did keep me interested enough to want to know how it ended。 Some aspects of the ending surprised me, some I had guessed。 It was just okay, hence the three stars instead of my normal five stars for Caroline Mitchell。 。。。more

A missing family, a creepy village hiding secrets。 Great plot。 Going into it, you know Naomi is going to be terrorized。 Lloyd is a sinister character but you find out at the end that he does everything to protect his child。 Morgan’s antics are suspicious but she wants to know Naomi’s reactions so you quickly learn she’s not responsible。 Susan is the most distasteful character but it’s not her fault。 There are a lot of red herrings that keep you guessing。 Good mystery。

A clever mystery。I can't say much about the plot without spoiling it, but suffice to say it's propulsive and articulated exceptionally well。I was certain I'd figured everything out very early on, and though I did get Grace's abuse (Factitious Disorder) right I'm very glad I was completely wrong about everything else。 You'll never guess the twist at the end。 Which is what makes Caroline such a good storyteller。 A clever mystery。I can't say much about the plot without spoiling it, but suffice to say it's propulsive and articulated exceptionally well。I was certain I'd figured everything out very early on, and though I did get Grace's abuse (Factitious Disorder) right I'm very glad I was completely wrong about everything else。 You'll never guess the twist at the end。 Which is what makes Caroline such a good storyteller。 。。。more

The Village This was a quick read that I completely fell into once I started。 There are a couple of good plot twists that I really didn't see coming。 Typically, I figure out the mystery well before the end。 This one had me guessing and turned into something that I wasn't expecting。 It was a nice change from other books in this category。 This was the first title that I've read from this author and I'll definitely read more from her。 The Village This was a quick read that I completely fell into once I started。 There are a couple of good plot twists that I really didn't see coming。 Typically, I figure out the mystery well before the end。 This one had me guessing and turned into something that I wasn't expecting。 It was a nice change from other books in this category。 This was the first title that I've read from this author and I'll definitely read more from her。 。。。more

I mostly read Police procedure crime books but this looked like it would be a good thriller。It starts quite slowly and builds to a frantic finish with multiple twists and turns。The Village is billed as a stand alone thriller, however there are a few loose ends at the finish, perhaps not enough to have a follow up novel, but you never know???I did enjoy it maybe even more than the DI Amy Winter series。
