Summary

A propulsive psychological thriller that follows an aspiring model down a social media-fuelled rabbit hole of obsession, narcissism and self-destruction。

For nineteen-year-old Mickey, Instagram offers a tantalizing portal into the world she wishes she inhabited。 Though beautiful, cunning and privileged, Mickey finds herself with a stalled modelling career, an escalating drinking problem, few friends and next to nothing in the bank。 To numb her growing despair, she spends her days frantically refreshing her Instagram feed, obsessively tracking the movements of Insta-famous model Gemma Anton。

Gemma is a perfected version of Mickey, living a seemingly perfect life: a skyrocketing career, a famous photographer boyfriend and adoring followers--the life Mickey wants more than anything for herself。 She studies every detail Gemma offers through the window of her phone, trying to absorb, learn, mimic, become the object of her growing fascination。

Then, a chance encounter thrusts Mickey into a world of opportunity, and she is met with surprising, and immediate, success。 But as her online persona begins to take over her life, Mickey finds it increasingly difficult to separate reality from the faade of Instagram。

Engrossing, sharp and astute, Like Me is a shimmering portrait of infatuation, disconnection and identity in the digital age--and a dazzling introduction to a brilliant new voice in contemporary literature。

Read this tripe in one day just to get it over with。

Made it through 20 pages and gave up。

This told a very disturbing story about today’s social media world。 I was surprised how much I learned about the world of influencers。 I never understood how this worked。 Worth a read if you can stomach it。 。

I picked this to read because of reviews from the editor, racing that it was a suspenseful, psychological thriller。 It was quite simplistic and trite。 I grew tired of the narrator’s obsession with Instagram and being an influencer。 I finished the book merely to see if there were any true twists, but it all fell quite flat。

Shoot me I AM SOOOOO bored

This book was so difficult to get through。 It makes an attempt to relate to our modern day social media filled lives。 But it just falls flat and I found it boring。

This book had me constantly questioning what was going on。 I really couldn’t keep up with what was real and what isn’t。 It was all over the place。 I wasn’t sure what I was hoping for, but the story was too jumbled for me to place together。Not much of a thriller, but very confusing。

Another lousy Prime first readWhy I even finished this book is beyond me。 The only people/person that would even come close to understanding or even liking this book would be a Kardashian wanna be。 Very superficial, geared only to the generation that needs constant judgement of their peers。

I started reading this because it was on Amazon first reads。 I gave it a good college try and made it to 25%。 However the characters are extremely bland and I found myself not only falling asleep but when I would try to pick back up I couldn’t remember what was going on and I just had no urgency to continue reading。 At 25% in; this book is basically about a girl who drinks way too much, eats way too little, and needlessly follows a model on Instagram and wants to be obsessively and compulsively I started reading this because it was on Amazon first reads。 I gave it a good college try and made it to 25%。 However the characters are extremely bland and I found myself not only falling asleep but when I would try to pick back up I couldn’t remember what was going on and I just had no urgency to continue reading。 At 25% in; this book is basically about a girl who drinks way too much, eats way too little, and needlessly follows a model on Instagram and wants to be obsessively and compulsively like this girl —she even looks like this girl。 The super annoying part of this book is about every other thought this girl is checking her Instagram feed and painstakingly the author gives us a play by play of about two pages worth of describing what her Instagram feed looks like ——which is extremely boring—-even my own highlight reel on my own IG doesn’t deserve that much attention; I just don’t see the golden halo that surrounds social media I guess, i dont know —- but really, when escaping reality into a novel; who wants to read about what someone’s IG highlights????? this is so stupid I cannot keep going this book is going in the do not finish pile 。。。more

This was one of the worst books I have ever read 。 It was all over the place , hard to follow and boring。 Chapters were hours long which made it harder to follow。 The story had no depth and I have no idea how to explain what I read 。 Don’t waste your time 。

Odd read。 Follows the erratic, drug and alcohol fueled rise to fame of an ‘influencer’ determined to make it to the top - no matter the cost。

1。5。 Something about this book just didn’t sit right with me。 I struggled with the rating。 Either a 1。5 or 2, but after sitting back a few minutes after reading, I just wish I never picked this book up。 I don’t like giving harsh reviews, but after reading this book I’m still at a loss for what the point was。 There were was a lot of mental health, rape, sexual abuse, and racism in it。 It was played out so casually and disrespectfully。 It also didn’t help that the main character, Mickey, infuriate 1。5。 Something about this book just didn’t sit right with me。 I struggled with the rating。 Either a 1。5 or 2, but after sitting back a few minutes after reading, I just wish I never picked this book up。 I don’t like giving harsh reviews, but after reading this book I’m still at a loss for what the point was。 There were was a lot of mental health, rape, sexual abuse, and racism in it。 It was played out so casually and disrespectfully。 It also didn’t help that the main character, Mickey, infuriated me。 It was a debut book, so I wanted to give it a shot, and hope the ending was going to turn this around, but unfortunately it did not。 。。。more

Like Me was a page-turner but struggled to find its feet。 Dealing with everything from toxic beauty standards, abuse in the modeling industry, unhealthy family relationships, mental health and performative activism, the reader is overwhelmed by a torrent of half-formed cultural commentaries smashed into tropey thriller plot。 A compelling but confounding read with not a single likeable character。

I wanted to like this book and I found parts to be though-provoking and compelling。 From those moments, I think I understand what the author was trying to represent and I'd be interested to see what she does in the future。 Although I enjoyed the epilogue, I was bored with the one-dimensional, vapid characters in the onslaught of abuse and addiction to drugs, alcohol, and the chime of a smartphone。 I can't think of anyone who I would recommend this to。 I wanted to like this book and I found parts to be though-provoking and compelling。 From those moments, I think I understand what the author was trying to represent and I'd be interested to see what she does in the future。 Although I enjoyed the epilogue, I was bored with the one-dimensional, vapid characters in the onslaught of abuse and addiction to drugs, alcohol, and the chime of a smartphone。 I can't think of anyone who I would recommend this to。 。。。more

To call this a Psychological Thriller is much of an overstatement。 While the book is okay overall, it is only because it shows the gritty, uneducated, drug-induced, fake, self-obsessed, and sad side of "the Instagram influencer"。 There is not a single character that is worthy of liking much less caring about。 Nor is any character well rounded and rich。 They all fall very flat。The storyline has major errors。 Then there is the epiloge。 The epiloge which is longer than a long chapter in other books To call this a Psychological Thriller is much of an overstatement。 While the book is okay overall, it is only because it shows the gritty, uneducated, drug-induced, fake, self-obsessed, and sad side of "the Instagram influencer"。 There is not a single character that is worthy of liking much less caring about。 Nor is any character well rounded and rich。 They all fall very flat。The storyline has major errors。 Then there is the epiloge。 The epiloge which is longer than a long chapter in other books。 The epiloge where the conclusion of the story actually happens。 I have a friend who regularly doesn't read epiloges, the story he would have read in this book verses what I read would have been entirely different。I read this because I got it for free as my Amazon First Reads。 I wish I had picked another book。 。。。more

Lots of trigger warnings with this one。 There's an attempt at irony in this book that might be lost on some people。 Either way it's a wild ride。 I really had no idea if she was hallucinating or not。 I don't usually like unreliable narrators especially ones that are obviously narcissistic, but Mickey makes you want her to win in a small way (or at least get some help)。 Something about this book is an eye opener but it doesn't quite reach the mark。 This could have resonated with so many woman。 It Lots of trigger warnings with this one。 There's an attempt at irony in this book that might be lost on some people。 Either way it's a wild ride。 I really had no idea if she was hallucinating or not。 I don't usually like unreliable narrators especially ones that are obviously narcissistic, but Mickey makes you want her to win in a small way (or at least get some help)。 Something about this book is an eye opener but it doesn't quite reach the mark。 This could have resonated with so many woman。 It was incredibly pessimistic but it still made me think。 How many times have I scrolled through Instagram looking at pictures of people I envy because it seems like they have the perfect life? We really don't know what it's truly like on the other side of the screen。 All I know is that this story feels realistic。 Someone could get confused about what real and what's a facade and become unhinged。 The author wrote a story that feels like a true memoir。 This will stick with me for alittle while。 。。。more

Captivating This story was intriguing and sucked you in。 I suppose because social media truly does play such a huge role in everyone's lives these days。 I myself have been sucked in by the need to be liked by numerous strangers。 That was until I attended two Tweet-Ups and determined how truly fake 90% of people were on their accounts。 Since then I've taken steps back。 My heart aches for Mickey。 Mostly because she didn't have one person in her life to reach out to her and say this is unhealthy。 T Captivating This story was intriguing and sucked you in。 I suppose because social media truly does play such a huge role in everyone's lives these days。 I myself have been sucked in by the need to be liked by numerous strangers。 That was until I attended two Tweet-Ups and determined how truly fake 90% of people were on their accounts。 Since then I've taken steps back。 My heart aches for Mickey。 Mostly because she didn't have one person in her life to reach out to her and say this is unhealthy。 The one and only person that could relate, she was never able to fully connect with。 Heartbreaking really。 I'd definitely recommend this book as it's a nice reminder of what we don't want to become as a social media participant。 The only thing I wasnt keen on was it was written in two parts rather than chapters。 Personally, i prefer chapters as it gives me an easier stopping point for late at night and so forth。 。。。more

Finished! Phew - what a ride! Definitely not one for the faint hearted and it, rightfully, has a trigger warning at the very front of the book。 At times, I hated Mickey who came across as a shallow, self centred, egotist。 Peel back the surface though, and you're left with a scared little girl who just wants to be loved but who believes that her online presence is more important than actual people。 Worth a read if you like something a bit different。 Trigger warnings are for abuse and rape and, ho Finished! You know that NyQuil commercial, "stuffy, cough, sneezy, etc?" There is mental health (not surprising); rape and sexual assault is brought up repeatedly and handled with the nonchalance of an everyday greeting; blackface is also given the same tactless consideration; a dad who is wrongfully convicted reads like a penciled in plot she just thought up。 I don't know who greenlit this but they should go back to school--along with her--or better yet, crawl back into their mother's wound and start over。 The way serious issues are dealt with so recklessly is disgusting。 I kept reading on thinking there would be redemption in the end--there wasn't。 This author's hatred of men is felt throughout the story。I get that she is a debut author and so I was more tolerant of the poor tone but after the ambiguous Blackface situation, I had to look this author up。 I see why she chose not to put her picture on Goodreads or Amazon。 That's the only smart decision she made regarding this book。I'm going to leave it at that。 。。。more

While I typically enjoy stories of this kind - any books featuring stalkers or social media have me at hello - I felt the author was poking fun at wokeness while in the same breath pandering to it。I have little tolerance for such nonsense。 The writing was fine, the story had potential, but in the end - and that boring, entirely too long epilogue might have been a contributing factor - all I felt was irritation; this book is only a byproduct of today’s culture rather than a satirical mirror refle While I typically enjoy stories of this kind - any books featuring stalkers or social media have me at hello - I felt the author was poking fun at wokeness while in the same breath pandering to it。I have little tolerance for such nonsense。 The writing was fine, the story had potential, but in the end - and that boring, entirely too long epilogue might have been a contributing factor - all I felt was irritation; this book is only a byproduct of today’s culture rather than a satirical mirror reflecting it。 。。。more
