Summary

Animals abound in Dr。 Seuss’s Caldecott Honor–winning picture book If I Ran the Zoo。 Gerald McGrew imagines the myriad of animals he’d have in his very own zoo, and the adventures he’ll have to go on in order to gather them all。 Featuring everything from a lion with ten feet to a Fizza-ma-Wizza-ma-Dill, this is a classic Seussian crowd-pleaser。 In fact, one of Gerald’s creatures has even become a part of the language: the Nerd!

The caricatures in this one are pretty harsh by Suessian standards。 Not his best work by any stretch。

A great book to inspire kids to dream about what the world would be like if they were in charge。

The story is fun and imaginative。 I read it for an “all ages storytime” and afterwards it inspired great creativity as participants imagined the creatures they would have in their own zoos。 I had to give it only 2 stars, however, as some of the drawings and stereotypes of various racial/ethnic groups is quite offensive (notably those of people of Asian or African descent)。 For this reason I’m not sure I could recommend the book。 I think any reading of the book would need to include a conversatio The story is fun and imaginative。 I read it for an “all ages storytime” and afterwards it inspired great creativity as participants imagined the creatures they would have in their own zoos。 I had to give it only 2 stars, however, as some of the drawings and stereotypes of various racial/ethnic groups is quite offensive (notably those of people of Asian or African descent)。 For this reason I’m not sure I could recommend the book。 I think any reading of the book would need to include a conversation about the hurtful (and racist) illustrations 。。。more

Grade: 3rd or 4th gradeGenre: PoetryReview: I really enjoyed this book as an adult but would be tricker to read to kids or having the kids read on their own because all of the different & made up words。 But still a good book!

I had hoped that this picture book would be amazing。 It is Dr。 Seuss。 It is amazing。 However, it was a stretch for use in a classroom for 24 4-year-olds。 Too many words。 A helpful book for letter Z focus and zoo focus, but perhaps better for one-on-one or an older crowd。

Alicia Evans

For: nonsense fans; readers looking for a silly book with lots of animals。Possible red flags: animal kidnapping to put them in the zoo; racist depictions that have NOT aged well。

Dr。 Seuss invented the word nerd writing this book。

Dr。 Seuss is an author I somehow appreciate far more as an adult than I ever did in my youth。 His turn of phrase is fluid and lyrical, while seeming effortless, than even a dolt like me who struggles appreciating poetry can enjoy it。 While his art is stylistic and delightful, his syntax is so sublime that I could read it sans illustration and it would still be as good。 The art in this book, however, is especially enjoyable, though some of his cultural depictions are dated and not particularly se Dr。 Seuss is an author I somehow appreciate far more as an adult than I ever did in my youth。 His turn of phrase is fluid and lyrical, while seeming effortless, than even a dolt like me who struggles appreciating poetry can enjoy it。 While his art is stylistic and delightful, his syntax is so sublime that I could read it sans illustration and it would still be as good。 The art in this book, however, is especially enjoyable, though some of his cultural depictions are dated and not particularly sensitive to modern sensibilities。 。。。more

My kids are going through their Seuss phase which is fun because I never read them as a child。 This one was too wordy for my 4 year old though who lost interest quick。。。also I hope there's an updated version out there that omits the comments about slanted eyes and catching 'exotic' peoples and placing them in the zoo too。 I may have skimmed a couple parts, yeesh My kids are going through their Seuss phase which is fun because I never read them as a child。 This one was too wordy for my 4 year old though who lost interest quick。。。also I hope there's an updated version out there that omits the comments about slanted eyes and catching 'exotic' peoples and placing them in the zoo too。 I may have skimmed a couple parts, yeesh 。。。more

I think if I read this often, my tongue will crush every tongue twisters (I think I know what books to read for my future babies)。

Besides the obvious racist depictions of Asians and Africans, the whole premise of this book is wrong and outdated。 No zoos or anyone else should be "capturing" any free animals。 I love Dr。 Seuss, but this is one I won't be reading to my daughter until she's old enough to understand why it's so wrong。 Besides the obvious racist depictions of Asians and Africans, the whole premise of this book is wrong and outdated。 No zoos or anyone else should be "capturing" any free animals。 I love Dr。 Seuss, but this is one I won't be reading to my daughter until she's old enough to understand why it's so wrong。 。。。more

This book contains the usual Dr。 Seuss signature marks: some good rhymes, but many utilizing weird names that don't really mean anything at all, a wild-running stream of images and ideas, and a sadistic and critical perspective。 Having this perspective in the zoo is not very pleasing; Zoos already have many amazing creatures, but it's the way zoos are operated that I don't like。 Either way, this was too destructive for a kid's book。 Plus, there was a lot of repetition, and unremarkable creations This book contains the usual Dr。 Seuss signature marks: some good rhymes, but many utilizing weird names that don't really mean anything at all, a wild-running stream of images and ideas, and a sadistic and critical perspective。 Having this perspective in the zoo is not very pleasing; Zoos already have many amazing creatures, but it's the way zoos are operated that I don't like。 Either way, this was too destructive for a kid's book。 Plus, there was a lot of repetition, and unremarkable creations, too。 。。。more

I believe this one the Caldecott, but its not my favorite Suess。 I think the writing is a little clunkier than usual。 It doesn't seem to keep my toddler's attention like some others (The Tooth book, Wocket in my pocket, Green Eggs and ham) I believe this one the Caldecott, but its not my favorite Suess。 I think the writing is a little clunkier than usual。 It doesn't seem to keep my toddler's attention like some others (The Tooth book, Wocket in my pocket, Green Eggs and ham) 。。。more

I'm torn about the rating on this one, because I don't like the idea of hunting and capturing animals to put in a zoo, but the value of this book lies more in its wild rhyming and dreaming, imagination extraordinaire。 Teaching kids to dream BIG is so important, and with that, this story does a great job。 I'm torn about the rating on this one, because I don't like the idea of hunting and capturing animals to put in a zoo, but the value of this book lies more in its wild rhyming and dreaming, imagination extraordinaire。 Teaching kids to dream BIG is so important, and with that, this story does a great job。 。。。more

Brilliant Dr。 Seuss with some of the best tongue twisting names for animals and areas of the world you could ever hope to find。 A firm favorite in our story book collection - I enjoy reading it to the children as much as they like listening to it。

Great book。 Gerald McGrew would make a few simple adjustments to his zoo, would you?

Pick another Dr。 Seuss book, this one is racist。 It includes offensive caricatures of different racial groups and the phrase "who wear their eyes at a slant" to describe asian people。 The caricatures of "Africans" are particularly horrendous。My husband was reading it to my son and had to stop cold。 It was written and illustrated in the 50s and it shows。NOPE。 I recommend There's a Wocket in My Pocket! if you like zany creatures。 Pick another Dr。 Seuss book, this one is racist。 It includes offensive caricatures of different racial groups and the phrase "who wear their eyes at a slant" to describe asian people。 The caricatures of "Africans" are particularly horrendous。My husband was reading it to my son and had to stop cold。 It was written and illustrated in the 50s and it shows。NOPE。 I recommend There's a Wocket in My Pocket! if you like zany creatures。 。。。more

This book is about a kid who dreams of having his own zoo。 In his own zoo he dreams of having things like elephant-cats and Zoomba-ma-tants。 The book is super interesting part of the reason I gave it 5 stars is because of all of the art work that was put into it。 It is crazy to think that Dr。 Seuss imagined all of these creatures。 Another thing I enjoyed about the book is that it could teach kids to have a big imagination, since the kid in the book was imagining owning a zoo and imagining animal This book is about a kid who dreams of having his own zoo。 In his own zoo he dreams of having things like elephant-cats and Zoomba-ma-tants。 The book is super interesting part of the reason I gave it 5 stars is because of all of the art work that was put into it。 It is crazy to think that Dr。 Seuss imagined all of these creatures。 Another thing I enjoyed about the book is that it could teach kids to have a big imagination, since the kid in the book was imagining owning a zoo and imagining animals that could never exist。 Another interesting thing is how each page uses minimal colors。 Most of the pages only use two different colors which makes it more fun to look at, but also is not too distracting。 。。。more
