Summary

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment。 World-renowned Zen master, spiritual leader, and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us。 For him a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves。 Dirty dishes, red lights, and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness"—the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality。 The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now。

Lucidly and beautifully written, Peace Is Every Step contains commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories from Nhat Hanh's experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader。 It begins where the reader already is—in the kitchen, office, driving a car, walking a part—and shows how deep meditative presence is available now。 Nhat Hanh provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing, which can bring immediate joy and peace。 Nhat Hanh also shows how to be aware of relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty and also its pollution and injustices。 the deceptively simple practices of Peace Is Every Step encourage the reader to work for peace in the world as he or she continues to work on sustaining inner peace by turning the "mindless" into the mindFUL。

Many great insights from one of the most important Buddhist writers。 I only rated it four stars because his books can be difficult to navigate as they typically follow a pretty nonlinear path。

This book is chock-full of helpful tips for living a conscious, calm life and encouraging others to do the same。 Even if it validates what you already know, it's a pleasant read and a lovely reminder to embrace the good things in life。It is centered on living in the present, as are most Buddhist writings。 I wasn't expecting him to spend an entire chapter on the concept of hope as a barrier, but it made sense。 It's all too simple to keep looking forward to tomorrow, longing for better days, but t This book is chock-full of helpful tips for living a conscious, calm life and encouraging others to do the same。 Even if it validates what you already know, it's a pleasant read and a lovely reminder to embrace the good things in life。It is centered on living in the present, as are most Buddhist writings。 I wasn't expecting him to spend an entire chapter on the concept of hope as a barrier, but it made sense。 It's all too simple to keep looking forward to tomorrow, longing for better days, but this is avoidance。 It's not always simple to face your current circumstance and deal with it head on, but it's encouraged here。Another point of this book is to get a better understanding of your friends and enemies。 And that's not enough to understand, you have to act on this understanding。 To adjust for your differences, you have to talk to others to test your true strength。 It's hard to be calm and have the peace of mind to do this in a well-performed way, but when you come across a challenge like this, this is to build a framework for some good meditation sessions。 Having a simple and powerful book is a comfort。 "Peace Is Every Step" has come at a good time for me。 It's good to remember that at this point in my life, when everything seems to be changing, I can always decide to be in the center。 You don't have to rely on outside situations or others to relax and find your true happiness。 。。。more

I have a large enso tattooed on my back with a silhouette of Thich Nhat Hanh and the words "Peace Is Every Step。" It's the phrase I tell myself when I'm stressed and then I suddenly feel my feet on the earth and the earth whisks away the tension emanating from me and replaces it with peace and the joy of the present moment。 Another stray thought: I'm in my 50s now and I sometimes think of books in terms of whether they are worth rereading。 This was my third reading of "Peace Is Every Step。" The I have a large enso tattooed on my back with a silhouette of Thich Nhat Hanh and the words "Peace Is Every Step。" It's the phrase I tell myself when I'm stressed and then I suddenly feel my feet on the earth and the earth whisks away the tension emanating from me and replaces it with peace and the joy of the present moment。 Another stray thought: I'm in my 50s now and I sometimes think of books in terms of whether they are worth rereading。 This was my third reading of "Peace Is Every Step。" The first time was maybe 3。5 stars, the second 4 stars, and this time 5。 And I will continue to reread it, not in bits and pieces but the whole thing from start to finish。 It fills me with joy。I was too cool to fully take on board the wisdom here when I first read this 25 years ago。 At times, the words seem too simple, but then Thich Nhat Hanh adds just enough detail to push the ideas where you can see their power。 He mentions (in multiple books, not just here) a girl who throws herself overboard to commit suicide after being raped by pirates while on a refugee boat — and then I'm never not taken aback when he puts himself in the shoes of the rapists and how he would've done exactly what they did if he'd grown up living their life。 Understanding is necessary to have love and compassion for all beings — this is a message he teaches and one I must relearn over and over。 Sometimes I don't want love and compassion for all beings — some are a-holes! Of course, there are some who would say the same about me。。。Anyway, I love this book。 I wish it were available on Kindle so I could better make highlights and return to my favorite parts。 That said, Edoardo Ballerini's audio performance is pure heaven。Excerpts:*Mindfulness must be engaged。 Once there is seeing, there must be acting。 Otherwise, what's the use of seeing? *The roots of war are in the way we live our daily lives — the way we develop our industries, build up our society, and consume goods。*Western civilization places so much emphasis on the idea of hope that we sacrifice the present moment。 Hope is for the future。 It cannot help us discover joy, peace, or enlightenment in the present moment。*When you begin to see that your enemy is suffering, that is the beginning of insight。I've read at least 30 Thich Nhat Hanh books; here are my favorites, all of which I plan to reread:* Fragrant Palm Leaves: Journals, 1962-1966* Old Path White Clouds: Walking in the Footsteps of the Buddha* The Miracle of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation* Being Peace* Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life 。。。more

Grateful to have read this as it has introduced me to the author, who led a very interesting life。 It is full of very practical mindfulness habits that I will probably never implement, but it's great to be aware of them and have the reminder to slow down every once and a while。 This is probably a great book for any adherent to Buddhism but not for me。 Grateful to have read this as it has introduced me to the author, who led a very interesting life。 It is full of very practical mindfulness habits that I will probably never implement, but it's great to be aware of them and have the reminder to slow down every once and a while。 This is probably a great book for any adherent to Buddhism but not for me。 。。。more

Whilst a very good book on mindfulness in its entirety, I particularly enjoyed the first half which was more focused, in my opinion on immediately improvable aspects of being。
