Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the New York Times bestselling author of I'm Judging You, a hilarious and transformational book about how to tackle fear--that everlasting hater--and audaciously step into lives, careers, and legacies that go beyond even our wildest dreams

Luvvie Ajayi Jones is known for her trademark wit, warmth, and perpetual truth-telling。 But even she's been challenged by the enemy of progress known as fear。 She was once afraid to call herself a writer, and nearly skipped out on doing a TED talk that changed her life because of imposter syndrome。 As she shares in Professional Troublemaker, she's not alone。

We're all afraid。 We're afraid of asking for what we want because we're afraid of hearing no。 We're afraid of being different, of being too much or not enough。 We're afraid of leaving behind the known for the unknown。 But in order to do the things that will truly, meaningfully change our lives, we have to become professional troublemakers: people who are committed to not letting fear talk them out of the things they need to do or say to live free。

With humor and honesty, and guided by the influence of her professional troublemaking Nigerian grandmother, Funmilayo Faloyin, Luvvie walks us through what we must get right within ourselves before we can do the things that scare us; how to use our voice for a greater good; and how to put movement to the voice we've been silencing--because truth-telling is a muscle。

The point is not to be fearless, but to know we are afraid and charge forward regardless。 It is to recognize that the things we must do are more significant than our fears。 This book is about how to live boldly in spite of all the reasons we have to cower。 Let's go!

It became clear about a quarter of the way through “Professional Troublemaker” that I – as a mostly non-marginalized individual – was not the target audience for Luvvie Ajayi Jones’ personal development pronouncements。 Still, I was charmed by her candor, humor and advice throughout, which elevated this above most business-focused books I’ve read in the past several years。 There was an accessibility, urgency and practicality to the topics she covers that will likely age well。 While the core messa It became clear about a quarter of the way through “Professional Troublemaker” that I – as a mostly non-marginalized individual – was not the target audience for Luvvie Ajayi Jones’ personal development pronouncements。 Still, I was charmed by her candor, humor and advice throughout, which elevated this above most business-focused books I’ve read in the past several years。 There was an accessibility, urgency and practicality to the topics she covers that will likely age well。 While the core messages were sometimes overshadowed by a digression into her own experiences (aka borderline champagne problems), I walked away with several opportunities for improvement, both personally and professionally。 I had never heard of Jones prior to this book being selected as a work-sponsored book club pick, so I was pleased by her frequent f-bombs and pop culture shoutouts seamlessly mixed into discussions about microaggressions, corporate culture and self-sabotage。 Even though much of the advice centers on empowering women - especially minority women - to not be afraid to be disruptors and break through self-imposed barriers, every single person that reads this will find universal truths and opportunities to advocate for yourself, but most importantly, others。 If you don’t, then you might be the reason a book like this needs to exist。 I’m going to challenge my fellow white men to read this book, over the next “it” topic by Malcom Gladwell, Simon Sinek or Mark Manson, because you will learn something here that will truly make you a better colleague。 In the age of the Great Resignation, that’s more important than the bottom line。 。。。more

Really enjoyable on audio since she narrates it。 I loved all the stories of her grandmother and she really affirmed my 8ness。 Thank you for giving me permission to be the professional troublemaker I already am ;)

I seriously can't recommend this book strongly enough。 Luvvie is the so raw and honest while also being inspiring and uplifting。 I got so much wisdom and ideas and reminders out of this book。 It is slow paced, but so well worth it, I promise! The Fear-Fighter Manual by Nkechi Jones is written in a uniquely funny and bright style。 Jones encourages her readers to confront imposter syndrome, engage in truth-telling, and embrace their inner troublemaker。 A strong sense of identity is an underpinning aspect of her strategy。 Luvvie Jones' new book is an indispensable guide to facing your fears head-on。 Bold, enlightening and endlessly witty, Jones instils the courage in you to be your true, unapologetic self。 This book can't help but put a The Fear-Fighter Manual by Nkechi Jones is written in a uniquely funny and bright style。 Jones encourages her readers to confront imposter syndrome, engage in truth-telling, and embrace their inner troublemaker。 A strong sense of identity is an underpinning aspect of her strategy。 Luvvie Jones' new book is an indispensable guide to facing your fears head-on。 Bold, enlightening and endlessly witty, Jones instils the courage in you to be your true, unapologetic self。 This book can't help but put a smile on your face and make you stand that bit taller。Quotes that stood out:"We don't get a gift for being the most self-deprecating in a room。 Or being the one who can make fun of ourselves best。 We have mastered that。 Now I want us to master the art of owning our dopeness。""Ask for more, because if the fear of disappointment stops you from going for what you want, then you are choosing failure in advance。""What is best for you might offend other people because once you start making choices that are truly yours, others might project their failure to do the same on you and resent you for it。 That is not your fault, nor is it your business。 Grow anyway。 Do what's hard anyway。 Change anyway。""When people remind you of your past selves, tell them yes, you remember her/him/them and you're glad they existed, because who you are now is so much better and you're thankful for it。The book is divided into three parts:1。tBe – how to work through the internal stuff so you can move forward, despite your fears2。tSay – how to advocate for yourself and others using your voice, even if it trembles3。tDo – how to do the things that scare the crap out of youFor more insightful reviews and information join us on insta zee_versatile 。。。more

This just wasn’t for me。 I thought the book was well written and organized and also funny; but best for younger readers。 Would make a nice gift for a teenage girl

Although I'm a fan, I feel like most of this is covered by her posts so I didn't need this book。 I did enjoy learning about her badass grandmother。 Although I'm not sure what the book's objective was。。。 is it an autobiography, self-help? Both? Some things can definitely help with a rallying cry for some, but just not for all。。。 I don't regret reading it but I can't give 5 stars。 Although I'm a fan, I feel like most of this is covered by her posts so I didn't need this book。 I did enjoy learning about her badass grandmother。 Although I'm not sure what the book's objective was。。。 is it an autobiography, self-help? I love this book。 She said lots of things I'm actually thinking but couldn't articulate。 It was full of laughter。 It's a great pick-me-up of you been in a quiet season and need some sauce to get you fired up for a new goal or a new project! OBSESSED with this author。 The book is excellent but I scream because she is a wordsmith。 It is a joy to read her words

I think casual, comedy, light hearted, conversational reading is not my cup of tea。 I didn’t like the writing style at all。 I read this book in a book club with women engineers yet I feel like I’m on a career path on a different planet than Luvvie。 It was hard to take in any of her advice when I feel like it truly doesn’t apply to my career or trajectory。 I’m not sure if I even retained much of the content of this book except that I want to try some Nigerian Jollof。

Luvvie is one of my favorite IG follows and I loved hearing her speak in person at a conference I went to。 I think maybe some of the things she was teaching in this book hit a little too close to home because I didn’t enjoy it as much as her first book。 I guess I need to get more “comfortable with being uncomfortable” and add this to my read-again list。 She really knows how to tell it like it is and I loved how she told about her grandmother and her influence on her life。

The author shares stories about Funmilayo Faloyin, her grandmother and the inspiration for her book, and outlines how we can attack our fears and push through to who we are meant to be。 After reading this, I’m ready to write my own oríkì (a。k。a。, my personal hype mantra)。 I gifted this one to a few of my friends, too。

Gearing myself up for 2022…。 Still afraid of what could be if I tried a little harder。 Thank you Luvvie! First this book has some of the best stories I’ve ever heard and now Luvvie is a friend in my head but I want run to hug her if I ever meet her (I’m not a hugger either…)。 So many nuggets in the book to set you up on the right track but you have to do the work。 If you’re looking for a manual on how to get out of your own way… this is it。

There were few quotes I liked but overall this book could have been series of blog posts。"To know ourselves is to write our values in cement even if our goals are in sand。""Your job is not to chameleon your way through life to the point where you forget what your true colors are。""We are less likely to experience the deep betrayals and the rejections if we understand that people serve certain purposes and not everyone can be in the same role with the same expectations。" There were few quotes I liked but overall this book could have been series of blog posts。"To know ourselves is to write our values in cement even if our goals are in sand。""Your job is not to chameleon your way through life to the point where you forget what your true colors are。""We are less likely to experience the deep betrayals and the rejections if we understand that people serve certain purposes and not everyone can be in the same role with the same expectations。" 。。。more

Definitely not for me, I forced myself to finish it。 Read it because found it on Adam Grant's reading list here。 It's kind of self help book with lots of stories from the life of the author's grandmother and the stories of the author herself。 There were maybe some nice tips here unfortunately got lost in the pile of many other thoughts, most of them irrelevant to someone not living in the US close to Nigerian native community。 I was expecting something for professionals, universal to everybody, Definitely not for me, I forced myself to finish it。 Read it because found it on Adam Grant's reading list here。 It's kind of self help book with lots of stories from the life of the author's grandmother and the stories of the author herself。 There were maybe some nice tips here unfortunately got lost in the pile of many other thoughts, most of them irrelevant to someone not living in the US close to Nigerian native community。 I was expecting something for professionals, universal to everybody, and got some very general stories, not to mention writing about supremacy of white man vs black women。 。。。more

This was a fun book about gassing one's self up to take on whatever is on the agenda for work, or family, or social change。 I liked Luuvie a lot and personally needed to hear some of the encouragement。 I appreciated that the tone was fun and upbeat even if a lot of the advice was the same I've heard elsewhere。 Luuvie is a pretty religious person and the repeated evocation of Jesus and God was more than I needed, but that is her and so it didn't take away too much for me。 This was a fun book about gassing one's self up to take on whatever is on the agenda for work, or family, or social change。 I liked Luuvie a lot and personally needed to hear some of the encouragement。 I appreciated that the tone was fun and upbeat even if a lot of the advice was the same I've heard elsewhere。 Luuvie is a pretty religious person and the repeated evocation of Jesus and God was more than I needed, but that is her and so it didn't take away too much for me。 。。。more

If you saw Ms Luvvie Ajayi Jones on Ted talk and read this book, you would hear her voice and manner of speaking while reading this book。 She is that great of a communicator。 I love the empowering message that this book had shared and can’t wait to meet a Nigerian and be his or her friend。

I love Luvvie Ajayi Jones’s voice。 I definitely will be looking for her TED talk and have added her fist book to my tbr。 I feel like this had the right balance of snark and sentiment to keep it from being overly cliche and trite, which is honestly how I feel about a lot of self-help。 Self-help is one of those genres that rarely does it for me, so while I did enjoy this book, it wasn’t a favorite, but I’m glad I read it。 I highly recommend it if you are looking for a self-help book that has a dis I love Luvvie Ajayi Jones’s voice。 I definitely will be looking for her TED talk and have added her fist book to my tbr。 I feel like this had the right balance of snark and sentiment to keep it from being overly cliche and trite, which is honestly how I feel about a lot of self-help。 Self-help is one of those genres that rarely does it for me, so while I did enjoy this book, it wasn’t a favorite, but I’m glad I read it。 I highly recommend it if you are looking for a self-help book that has a distinct, unique, and fun voice。 。。。more
