Summary

Romania, 1989。 Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe。 Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force。

Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer。 He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe。

Cristian risks everything to unmask the truth behind the regime, give voice to fellow Romanians, and expose to the world what is happening in his country。 He eagerly joins the revolution to fight for change when the time arrives。 But what is the cost of freedom?

I will read anything Ruta Sepetys writes so of course I jumped at the chance to read this! I'm sure this reveals much about my schooling and my general knowledge of history but I always love how she writes from events and POVs I almost never see in other historical fiction or have ever heard of。 I thought I Must Betray You was such a fascinating story and I found Christian's pov to be so engaging。 His thoughts about life under communism/totalitarianism were heartbreaking but so poetic as well。 T I will read anything Ruta Sepetys writes so of course I jumped at the chance to read this! Ruta Sepetys did it again! Another great historical novel that gripped me and go through so many emotions。 You are following a young Romanian 17 year old boy who has been inspired by his grandfather and wants his country to be free。 But he has learned so much secrets and lies and has to decide who to trust and who to betray, even his own family。 This novel was heartbreaking and I always learn so much from her novels。 I definitely recommend this read。 Thank you penguin teen for an E-arc!

Absolutely one of the best novels I have ever read。 My heart was in my throat much of the time as I worried about Cristian, Lilliana, Luca, Bunu and the rest。 This takes place in communist Romania。 No one could be trusted and families and friends often turned against each other。 This was a heartbreaking time in history that I didn’t know much about。 Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review。

So while this wasn't my favorite Ruta Sepetys novel, it was still inspiring and taught me a lot about this little-known part of history。 I really appreciated the author's note going deeper into the history as well as pictures from that time。 An interesting historical fiction!Writing Aesthetic/Style: 5Plot/Movement: 3Character Development: 4Overall: 4Thank you, Penguin Teen, for the ARC! 。。。more

Thank you to Penguin Teen, Yallfest 2021, and Ruta Sepetys for the ARC of I Must Betray You。First of all, I have enjoyed and gotten a lot out of each Ruta Sepetys book I have read。 She does an amazing job of both engaging the reader and telling a piece of history that many might not be familiar with。 And I Must Betray You is no different。 This book tells the story of Romania in 1989 from the perspective of Cristian, a seventeen year old who dreams of becoming a writer in a country where freedoms Thank you to Penguin Teen, Yallfest 2021, and Ruta Sepetys for the ARC of I Must Betray You。First of all, I have enjoyed and gotten a lot out of each Ruta Sepetys book I have read。 She does an amazing job of both engaging the reader and telling a piece of history that many might not be familiar with。 And I Must Betray You is no different。 This book tells the story of Romania in 1989 from the perspective of Cristian, a seventeen year old who dreams of becoming a writer in a country where freedoms, including that of speech, don't exist。 I Must Betray You is a relatively short and quick read unlike its predecessor, The Fountains of Silence。 I liked that Sepetys incorporated (fictional) reports within the novel and included (real) photos from the era at the end。 Also, the story itself was pretty easy to follow along and I found Cristian to be a good main character and also enjoyed the secondary characters as well。 I really only have two complaints about I Must Betray You and truthfully they really aren't complaints。 First, I think some readers will feel like Sepetys should have used a different character as the main character since their story would have been more intriguing。 However, I personally liked that we see what happens in Romania from the perspective of an average teenager。 With that said, Sepetys does drop some twists in the epilogue that definitely left me wishing for more。 I understood the point of those twists but it was a little unfair (?) that they were just handed to the reader without any depth to them。My second non-complaint complaint is that having also gotten an ARC of This Rebel Heart (which covers the 1956 Hungarian revolution in post-WWII Communist Budapest and is written by Katherine Locke) I could not help but compare the two since they are so so similar in terms of topic/history covered despite the difference in eras。 And in my opinion, This Rebel Heart, is a better book。 As a result, I do kind of worry/am curious to see how the two novels stack up against each other once they are both out in the world。 I do think together they could make for an interesting classroom assignment。 All in all, I'm glad I got a chance to read I Must Betray You and I thought it was a really good book。 Perhaps not as good as some Sepetys books but definitely worth reading。 。。。more

I spent 4 days in Romania around the time this novel was set in 1989 and this is an illuminating look at what a totalitarian state looks like。 The author once again successfully brings to life how a young person might deal with oppression and terror on a daily basis。 Great book of historical fiction。

My goodness! Ruta Sepetys is so talented。 Her books always draw me in to the places and lives she writes about, and this was no exception。 She beautifully brings to life people and shares their heartache and sorrow。 This book brings humanity to history。 On another note, this is the first historical fiction book I’ve read that takes place in my lifetime。 It was strange to have flashes of memory from my childhood as I read the names of places and landmark events。
