Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of On Mystic Lake comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship。 。 。 。

In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain。 Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend。 Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition。 On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn。 Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her。 They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become TullyandKate。 Inseparable。

So begins Kristin Hannah’s magnificent new novel。 Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives。

From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world。 Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally。 In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul。 But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her。 She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success 。 。 。 and loneliness。

Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special。 Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life。 In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully。 What she doesn’t know is how being a wife and mother will change her 。 。 。 how she’ll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted。 And how much she’ll envy her famous best friend。 。 。 。

For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment。 They think they’ve survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart 。 。 。 and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test。

Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone’s Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac。 More than a coming-of-age novel, it’s the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices。 It’s about promises and secrets and betrayals。 And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you 。 。 。 and heal you。 Firefly Lane is a story you’ll never forget 。 。 。 one you’ll want to pass on to your best friend。

Beautiful writing from Kristin Hannah, as always。 But this one fell a little flat for me。 I think I'll enjoy it as a tv series, but it's just not the type of book I enjoy。 I found the first 3/4 really boring。 Beautiful writing from Kristin Hannah, as always。 But this one fell a little flat for me。 I think I'll enjoy it as a tv series, but it's just not the type of book I enjoy。 I found the first 3/4 really boring。 。。。more

This was a total beach book, incredibly corny。 However it was a kick to remember back on all the music, styles, etc that transpired during the 70s and onward。

One of my most favorite books I’ve ever read and I’m so grateful to my friend who encouraged me to read it。So many emotions reading this book: laughing, cringing, crying, crying, disappointment, crying, love。 Literally everyone needs to move this novel to the TOP of their TBR because it’s beautiful。 I can’t wait to read my next Kristin Hannah book! 😍

Everyone else raves about this book and it was good。 I'd probably give it a 3。5。 But it was just enjoyable to read。 Nothing that stuck with me。 Everyone else raves about this book and it was good。 I'd probably give it a 3。5。 But it was just enjoyable to read。 Nothing that stuck with me。 。。。more

I can’t super process right now how I feel。 I miss my friends a lot in this weird time with COVID。 I feel lonely。 There have been times in my life I was driven and passionate about work and felt like Tully。 More often I feel like Kate in being a little unsure and overcommitted。 But I also felt frustrated by the stuff Tully would do。。。。 ughhhh!

I love this book and how it showed that two completely different and opposite people could be best friends。 It showed that nothing in this world such as fame and fortune can fully complete you。 Family, friends, and loved-ones is the richest reward a person can attain in life even if the whole world is crumbling all around。 Everyone has a family even if we feel all alone at times。 This story shared about a friendship that lasts through the decades; a relationship that anyone could wish for。 In th I love this book and how it showed that two completely different and opposite people could be best friends。 It showed that nothing in this world such as fame and fortune can fully complete you。 Family, friends, and loved-ones is the richest reward a person can attain in life even if the whole world is crumbling all around。 Everyone has a family even if we feel all alone at times。 This story shared about a friendship that lasts through the decades; a relationship that anyone could wish for。 In the end Love is what matters。 I wish I was a firefly lane girl! 。。。more

Was good and written well。 Nothing too amazing with the story line。 Honestly don't think it's good enough to be made into a tv show, guess it's a generic enough of a story to make into a series。 Was good and written well。 Nothing too amazing with the story line。 Honestly don't think it's good enough to be made into a tv show, guess it's a generic enough of a story to make into a series。 。。。more

I love Kristen Hannah but this book really got to me。 I love their friendship, I loved the way Johnny loved her, and my heart broke in the end。 I cried for the 3 days trying to finish it。 And I'd recommend again and again。 I love Kristen Hannah but this book really got to me。 I love their friendship, I loved the way Johnny loved her, and my heart broke in the end。 I cried for the 3 days trying to finish it。 And I'd recommend again and again。 。。。more

Oy vey。 I could only wonder why Ms Hannah hasn't been sued for plagiarism。 Yep, I finished it, so 2 stars, but sooooo predictable it smelled。。。。bad。 I know Ms Hannah clearly took this subject seriously by the end notes, but this story was written before and made into a movie, so pluhleez。。。。 Oy vey。 I could only wonder why Ms Hannah hasn't been sued for plagiarism。 Yep, I finished it, so 2 stars, but sooooo predictable it smelled。。。。bad。 I know Ms Hannah clearly took this subject seriously by the end notes, but this story was written before and made into a movie, so pluhleez。。。。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book thoroughly。 However, I do almost wish that it was a trilogy I felt at times that stories were not finished and that I could have understood the characters more but that ending will have you thinking you knew all of the characters your whole life。

Michelle

I love everything she writes

Unfortunately it’s cliched, predictable and corny。 Of course there’s success, lots of money, jealousy, depression, and relationship issues。 Tully’s mother finally disappears for good。 Katie’s mother continues to be perfectly understanding and loving。 Not much actually happens but it takes a long time。

I watched the Netflix series before reading the book。 Only bc my hold at the library came after the Netflix series came out; nope, I didn't feel the need to wait。 I did a fun viewing party of some early episodes。 I wasn't sure what to expect of the book bc the commentary from the viewing party was how different the series was from the book。 It was。。。and it wasn't。 The core of the book & Netflix series are the same -- true genuine friendship where neither friend is perfect nor one always the savi I watched the Netflix series before reading the book。 Only bc my hold at the library came after the Netflix series came out; nope, I didn't feel the need to wait。 I did a fun viewing party of some early episodes。 I wasn't sure what to expect of the book bc the commentary from the viewing party was how different the series was from the book。 It was。。。and it wasn't。 The core of the book & Netflix series are the same -- true genuine friendship where neither friend is perfect nor one always the savior, the other always victim。 I've always viewed true friendship as one where we trade places, at times one of us needs the other at times to be strong, to be honest, to just listen & not offer advice, to not just listen but offer advice and sometimes acknowledging life is hard, I've got no answers and I'm here for you。 On a lighter note, I enjoyed the music & fashion references through the ages! I'd have to say I enjoyed these most of all in the series bc fashion (good or bad) is fun to see! 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I enjoyed this book。 It’s a sweet story about love, friendship and loyalty。 It’s a long but easy read。 My only criticism is that I wasn’t sure where it was going about half to 3/4 of the way through and I’m not sure that it deserves all the hype it’s getting right now。 But I walked away glad that I read it and it came at the right time for me as I needed a change in genre。 It also left me with a feeling like it was a similar storyline to Beaches。

Angie

3。5 stars。 Kristin Hannah is a talented writer。 This was not my favorite of hers, but I was engaged and crying my eyes out by the end。 Off to watch the Netflix series now。

Stacey

Good story, almost great, but it needed a good chop。 It was kind of the same story over and over again, but she is a good writer。 Loves to make you cry。

4。5 stars! i really loved this book。 it’s funny because i saw the netflix series first not knowing it was based off of a novel。 i loved how it was so different from the show, but also had some similarities。 Kristin Hannah is a great writer。 I can’t wait to read more of her novels!

I have had three Kristin Hannah books on my bookshelf for years, always hearing good things better never really "getting into them"。 I am officially so excited to dive into more from this author having finally finished one of her books。 I could NOT put Firefly Lane down! I really enjoyed how time passing was marked not by a time stamp at the start of a chapter but by milestones within the characters' lives。 While many, many years passed, I never felt as though we were trying to fit too much in one novel, nor did I feel like the storyline "jumped" all over the place。 The story itself was an emotional rollercoaster that left me wanting more of the characters and in need of tissues。 I enjoyed the close knit nature of the characters as a whole, not just Kate and Tully's relationship。 As far as characters go, I adored Kate。 I felt like she was incredibly realistic and despite her trials, she did show character growth over the years。 Tully is harder for me to love and accept, though she certainly has her moments of pulling at heartstrings。 I started Fly Away after my tears dried, (only to start crying again) and I really look forward to experiencing Kristin Hannah's storytelling again。 。。。more

I totally connected with this novel。 Kristin Hannah, in my opinion, writes from the heart。 This is a beautiful love story of friends and family。 So much reminded me of my own experience growing up。 My mother and I didn't become "friends" until I was in my late 20s。 When she was gone, I realized how much I missed her。 I wish I had asked her more questions about her life before I was born。 I totally connected with this novel。 Kristin Hannah, in my opinion, writes from the heart。 This is a beautiful love story of friends and family。 So much reminded me of my own experience growing up。 My mother and I didn't become "friends" until I was in my late 20s。 When she was gone, I realized how much I missed her。 I wish I had asked her more questions about her life before I was born。 。。。more

I absolutely loved this novel。 This is the second book I've read from Kristin Hannah and I can say she makes me get in all my feelings。 This book was beautiful。 I will say it again, it's absolutely beautiful! READ IT READ IT READ IT。 The friendship between Kate and Tully was so strong that sometimes it made me forget they were friends, the book made feel like they were sister, not almost like sister but like by blood sisters。 Even though if they were sisters, they'd probably hate each other。 But I absolutely loved this novel。 This is the second book I've read from Kristin Hannah and I can say she makes me get in all my feelings。 This book was beautiful。 I will say it again, it's absolutely beautiful!
