Summary

Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Last Wish introduced the world to the iconic monster hunter Geralt of Rivia; his beloved ward and the prophesied savior of the world, Ciri; and his ally and true love, the powerful sorceress Yennefer—and they took the world by storm。 Now, experience the world of the Witcher like never before with this stunning deluxe hardcover edition of the story collection that started it all, featuring a beautiful new cover and eight gorgeous interior illustrations by a range of award-winning artists。

Geralt is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless hunter。

Yet he is no ordinary killer。 Both revered and hated, he seeks out the vile fiends that ravage the land and attack the innocent, holding the line against the monsters that plague the world。

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil; not everything fair is good 。 。 。 and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth。

Featuring illustrations by: Tommy Arnold, Kiri Østergaard Leonard, Bruce Brenneise, Jeremy Wilson, Jen Bartel, Allen Williams, Martina Fačková, and Winona Nelson

A great read - especially coupled with the TV series on Netflix, although I'm glad to watch and read together as the timelines are quite confusing and differ between the book and the series。 Each one fills in missing details from the other! Interesting。 They captured the feel of the book well in the series, but I think if I had only read the book, I might have been wholly confused。 Fantastic action scenes and I love the way the author weaves well-known fairy tales in and out of the narrative。 A great read - especially coupled with the TV series on Netflix, although I'm glad to watch and read together as the timelines are quite confusing and differ between the book and the series。 Each one fills in missing details from the other! Entertaining read, and fun, especially if you like the show。 The books are always better。 High art this is not。

I've only read this book trying to catch up with the series but this seems a bit of a long journey for me。 It's a fun book, the writing is smooth, but it's also confusing with lots of non-English names。 I listened to the audiobook version which makes it a bit harder to follow, so beware。 Still fun! My rating reflects my enjoyment of a given book and not what I believe to be its value since I don't think such a thing can be attributed based on a five star rating system。 Books are not regular consumer goods and can't be rated as one would rate a microwave or a vacuum cleaner。 So this is great fun。 It's a lovely hodge podge of different genres, high fantasy, dark retelling of european fairy tales, a touch of the picaresque novel, interesting fragmented timelines, all done with extreme mastery My rating reflects my enjoyment of a given book and not what I believe to be its value since I don't think such a thing can be attributed based on a five star rating system。 Books are not regular consumer goods and can't be rated as one would rate a microwave or a vacuum cleaner。 So this is great fun。 It's a lovely hodge podge of different genres, high fantasy, dark retelling of european fairy tales, a touch of the picaresque novel, interesting fragmented timelines, all done with extreme mastery so that it feels easy and seemless。 The characterization is absolutely perfect, the comic relief well dosed。 I skip over some of the longer action bits because I get bored and just want to know who lived and who died so I can move on to the more "serious"/ narrative / introspective bits, but that's just me。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 “People," Geralt turned his head, "like to invent monsters and monstrosities。 Then they seem less monstrous themselves。 When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are。 They feel better then。 They find it easier to live。” reading the book after watching the show is quit 4。5 stars。 “People," Geralt turned his head, "like to invent monsters and monstrosities。 Then they seem less monstrous themselves。 When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are。 They feel better then。 They find it easier to live。” reading the book after watching the show is quite frustrating since the book seems to be a completely different work。 the book is basically a whole new level, so much better and well developed。the only reason why i leave the o,5 out is the fact that some scenes were too confusing to understand, to even picture while reading them。 other than that, there's not even a single thing i can complain about。something that amazed me was yennefer。 when it comes to the books, i haven't known her character for too long, but i'm already sure that i'm way more fond of her "book version" than the show-version。 yen is such an amazing character and i really like how she was written。plus, i love-hate that they translated jaskier's name for the books。 i mean, i love the name jaskier so much and they call him dandilion/dandelion in the books, i was shocked when i came across this。 it's not a bad thing though, since dandelion is also super cool。i feel like i'll be reading the next book asap since i already miss the characters, and i'm pretty excited to know what happens next。 。。。more

Yes, read it。 It's good。 Be ready for a non-linear story。 You will be jumping around in the time line, but it all makes sense for revelation of the characters in this expository installment, and it does not bore as so many prequels and first-in-epic-series books do。 Be ready for eastern European names; this is not Tolkien。 For me part of the joy is delving into a series inspired by folklore from somewhere other than Ireland。 I like that the writer uses the characters to explore human nature。 Thi Yes, read it。 It's good。 Be ready for a non-linear story。 You will be jumping around in the time line, but it all makes sense for revelation of the characters in this expository installment, and it does not bore as so many prequels and first-in-epic-series books do。 Be ready for eastern European names; this is not Tolkien。 For me part of the joy is delving into a series inspired by folklore from somewhere other than Ireland。 I like that the writer uses the characters to explore human nature。 This is not merely a political drama; it's not just romance; it's not just sword skirmishes and cart chases and magical explosions。 Yes, all those elements appear, but the author has used those opportunities to explore deeper questions: When is killing a mercy? How do you know what you're doing is right? What responsibility do we have for our past choices? What is human nature? Why do people invent monsters?。。。 Really, this is the best kind of fantasy; it is the mirror we hold up to ourselves。 I can't wait to start the next book。 。。。more

This is fascinating。 Reading this is the best decision I’ve made。 I have been watching The witcher series in Netflix and I wanted to really understand the world behind that so I decided to read it。 This book is the introduction of Geralt of Rivia, the adventures and journey of being a witcher。 Dandelion aka Jaskier, bestfriend of Geralt of Rivia, has been wonderful, comical and the best buddy。 In this book, Yennefer of Vengeberg was also introduced although slightly, still no back story behind h This is fascinating。 Reading this is the best decision I’ve made。 I have been watching The witcher series in Netflix and I wanted to really understand the world behind that so I decided to read it。 This book is the introduction of Geralt of Rivia, the adventures and journey of being a witcher。 Dandelion aka Jaskier, bestfriend of Geralt of Rivia, has been wonderful, comical and the best buddy。 In this book, Yennefer of Vengeberg was also introduced although slightly, still no back story behind her journey。 It was very interesting to read this after watching the series because there are things that are changed and omitted for the sake of entertainment so if you are really curious as to what the story entails, you need to read the books for proper understanding and comprehension with the events that occurred in the tv series。 As I have observed, there are some events in this book that are incorporated for both season 1 and season 2 of the netflix series。 It is really hard to guess whether they just intended to scatter the events for the purpose of undertanding the story in a much broader aspect because for me I needed to read the books for me to eventually understand the flow and to know the sequence of the events that occurred in the tv series。 And now since I’ve read this, I am beginning to clearly appreciate and comprehend the subtle conflicts and situations that have been discussed and presented in the tv series。 It is important for me to know what’s happening and where is the story going for, cause it’s really hard for me to just embrace the one that is adapted and the one that is on the games compared to the literal source which is the books cause this books holds the power of the original informations and facts in regards of the witchers world。 So I do enjoy reading this。 I am excited to continue my journey in unlocking the secrets of The Witcher series。 。。。more

My first contact with the Witcher was with the video games, but this series has made me enjoy fairytales in their twisted dark way。 Looking forward to the other volumes。

3。50/3。75。 I really enjoyed it, the witcher's world is so vast and full of surprises and I LOVE fantasy stories where the characters travel experiencing different things and meeting people。 The only downside for me was the fact that I have already watched the series therefore some things I knew beforehand。 Besides this aspect, I was so happily surprised on the fact that Geralt's personality was much deeper than what the tv series shows。 3。50/3。75。 I really enjoyed it, the witcher's world is so vast and full of surprises and I LOVE fantasy stories where the characters travel experiencing different things and meeting people。 The only downside for me was the fact that I have already watched the series therefore some things I knew beforehand。 Besides this aspect, I was so happily surprised on the fact that Geralt's personality was much deeper than what the tv series shows。 。。。more

Uppbyggd av korta historier vilket gör att boken inte riktigt får ett djup eller en riktig handling。 Inte en favorit hos mig。

Trevor Kassis

Not as charming as the writing in Wild Hunt。 It all feels pretty basic, and the prose is sort of clunky。 I like how much of a shit Geralt is。 Need to find out if the series improves as it goes, or if this is as good as it gets。

I wanted to watch The Witcher series on Netflix and figured I would read the book first。 Honestly, I don't think these books are for me and I'll just watch the show。 I have watched the first 3 episodes of season 1, and the series is really similar to the book, which is awesome。 I wanted to watch The Witcher series on Netflix and figured I would read the book first。 Honestly, I don't think these books are for me and I'll just watch the show。 I have watched the first 3 episodes of season 1, and the series is really similar to the book, which is awesome。 。。。more

Okay … I liked this book & while I understand it’s a collection of short stories leading up to Geralt’s present … I found that it lacked “umph” & there weren’t any characters of substance- none that stood out - I hope the next book enthralls me more than this one did 。 4 / 5 ⭐️

4。5 stars! For some reason high fantasy novels are harder for me to read。 I think the overwhelming amount of new places, people, names, new words, etc just throw my brain for a loop。 However, The Last Wish gave me no issues。 Sapkowski’s writing is accessible and easy to follow and kept me engaged until the end。 I’m glad this is only the beginning of my adventures with Geralt。

I did like this - but I do think the fact that I’ve seen some of the show helped me understand this better。 I find that I prefer continuous stories whereas this was an assortment of short stories put together into one book。 The stories were interesting but I am curious to see if the other books have more of an overarching story that is easier to follow。 I am curious to read more, but this one was just okay for me!

A surprisingly light and easy read, I think I was expecting something more convoluted and tricky to follow but that was not the case; pleasantly so。

Minus the weird sex scene as the introduction the book was really good。 Can’t wait to read more。
