Hamilton’s entertaining but overwrought 28th installment of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter urban fantasy series (after Sucker Punch) is equal parts soap opera and adventure。 When Rafael, Anita’s friend and lover, is challenged to a fight to the death for the throne of the wererat community, Anita is bound to stand by his side—and the outcome could drastically alter the balance of supernatural power in America。 Wererats only respect strength, so Anita must repeatedly prove herself against a host of opponents, even as she and her allies navigate the complicated politics that govern vampires and shape-shifters alike。 Further complications arise when Anita realizes Rafael’s challenger has ties to a powerful foe with their own sinister agenda for the wererats。 Amid the intrigue, Hamilton still devotes plenty of time to Anita’s ever-expanding polyamorous relationships and upcoming wedding to vampire king Jean-Claude。 This entry does little to advance the series arc even as it delivers all the escapades readers expect, including copious sex scenes, check-ins with a sprawling supporting cast, and moments of visceral combat。 Newcomers may feel lost, but Hamilton’s die-hard fans are sure to be pleased。 Agent: Merrilee Heifetz, Writers House。 (Feb。)

I was working out in the weight room with Claudia, who was a more serious weightlifter than I would ever be, but she was teaching me how to trust my new supernatural strength。 In the movies you become a vampire or a werewolf or whatever, and you just automatically know how it all works。 In real life it wasn't automatic, or at least it wasn't for me。 In all honesty, lifting some of the weights scared me, which meant I couldn't lift them, because my mind convinced me it was impossible, which was why I'd started spending part of Saturday in the gym with Claudia。 She was helping me work through my nerves and had patiently explained that a lot of people had the same issues when they first became shapeshifters。 I wasn't exactly a shapeshifter, but close enough。 What were we talking about between lifting heavy objects? Men, you can take the human out of the girl, but you can't take the girl out of the wererat, or something like that。

"But Rafael is literally tall, dark, and handsome。 His house is beautiful, and the pool is so nice I'm beginning to want one。 He's polite, well-spoken, a gentleman。"

"All that is true," Claudia said。

"So why doesn't he have more lady friends?"

"Ask him," she said, and lay down on the weight bench and started to wrap her dark hands around a truly frightening amount of weight。 She was six feet, six inches tall and already had enough muscle visible around the sports bra and double shorts that I knew she could lift it。 I'd seen her lift that much before, but it still sort of scared me for shoulder press。 I'd owned cars that didn't weigh as much as she was about to lift on the specially reinforced bar。 If she were merely human and it fell on her neck, she'd have a crushed larynx and be dead before medical help could arrive。 If it landed on her chest, I might be able to call for help before she suffocated from not being able to expand her chest enough to keep breathing, but I couldn't lift it off her。 I could not spot her at these weights。 I'd pointed that out to her, and she'd replied with, "This is the weight I'd be doing if you weren't here。" She had a point, so I let it go。

I thought I lifted respectable weight for being five foot three and female, but trying to lift in the same room with Claudia always made me feel sort of puny; of course, the Hulk might feel kind of puny trying to keep up with her, so I guess I shouldn't worry about it。

She got the weight clear of the bar。 Lowered it slowly and with perfect control。 The only sign of strain was the way her muscles corded and the sound of her breath as she did a sharp exhale and pushed the bar upward again。 I knew we were doing pyramid sets, so she'd be doing three to five reps on this last weight, but part of me just wanted her to put it back on the rack and be done。 It wasn't that I thought she couldn't handle reps with it, I just wasn't sure my nerves could handle watching her do it。

She did five reps, her muscles working smoothly, showing no effort except for her breath being a little more serious at the end。 She set the weight back in the rack, and I realized I'd been holding my breath, because it came out in a whoosh, as if I'd been the one lifting。

She sat up and smiled at me。 "You know I'm not in any danger when I lift。 If I thought it was dangerous, I either wouldn't do it, or I'd have someone in here to spot me。"

"I know you're very safety conscious in the gym, but I don't know if I'll ever get used to watching you and the other shapeshifters lift so much more than human-normal。"

"You can lift more now, too," she said, reaching for the towel she had to the side of the rack。 It was just good manners to wipe off the bench after you were done。

"Yeah, but not that kind of weight。"

"You're smaller than me。"

I laughed。 "Most of the male guards are smaller than you。"

She smiled, a fierce baring of white teeth in the deep brown of her face。 "Your turn," she said with that smile that was fierce and happy at the same time, as if a panther could smile like a person, though that wasn't her flavor of wereanimal, but somehow rat just didn't convey the dangerous beauty of Claudia。

She let me help her put most of her weights back on the weight racks because I insisted on helping, but it was a workout just to do that part。 I let her help me put my weights on the bar because it was fair。 "Just so you know, I wouldn't lift this by myself without someone to spot me。"

She gave that fierce smile again, with a small deep chuckle。 I'd only recently learned Claudia was a deep, throaty alto when she sang, and that she could sing。 It had been worth going to karaoke just to hear her。

I lay back on the bench and centered myself under the bar。 I hadn't been super strong long enough to really believe it all the time。 I looked at the weights and thought, I'm about to press three times my body weight, which was ridiculous, except that I'd done it before。 Claudia put her hands over the bar, ready to help if I needed it; without her there I would have been scared to do it。

I wrapped my hands around the bar, using the roughened part of it to help me decide on hand placement, and then I couldn't put it off anymore。 Lifting this amount of weight off the rack wasn't about strength really, it was about believing it was possible。 I'd learned that I couldn't look too hard at the weight on either side of the bar, because it made part of my head start screaming, Impossible, I can't lift this! I could do the inhuman weights for most of the exercises and just marvel at it, but the chest press and the squat rack both spooked me, because if they went wrong, I could end up crippled or dead, if I'd been human, and of course that was the other part that rattled around in my brain。 How human was I? How much did the metaphysical connections to the vampires and the shapeshifters help me here? They made me stronger and harder to hurt。 They helped me heal faster than human-normal from cuts, stabs, bullets, a brain injury, but did they cover being crushed? Did I really want to find out just to lift in the gym? Saying it that way made it sound stupid。

"You can do this, Anita, you know you can," Claudia said, leaning her face a little more into my line of sight。

I looked up into her true brown eyes, the utter surety in her face。 She was right, I knew she was right。 "I can do this," I said。

She gave that fierce smile again and leaned over to whisper, "We got company, make me proud。"

I didn't point out that whoever had come into the weight room would have to be a shapeshifter, which meant that they would be able to lift this and more, but as I'd learned in the weight room when I was merely human, it wasn't always about who was stronger, it was about who wanted it more。 I wanted it, because if the guards who just walked in had been ones she liked, she'd have yelled it out, teased them about me being tougher than them。 That she'd whispered it meant she didn't like them, which probably meant neither would I。

I suddenly wasn't afraid of the weights; Claudia was there, she could catch anything I could lift, and besides, I wanted to make her proud。 She'd started being my weight-lifting partner even though I wasn't strong enough to spot for her。 She was teaching me how to use the new supernatural strength, and without saying it out loud she enjoyed having another woman who worked out hard。

I cleared the weight off the rack, took in my breath, and started lowering the bar down。 My body had a moment of going You're joking, right? when my elbows bent and the bar touched my chest, not resting on it, but just touching it。 My arms trembled as I started pushing upward。 The elbow on the side that had the most scars hesitated a second, and then I was pushing up, using my breath to help push the weight up, as if I could blow it away from me。 I could feel the muscles bunch and move in a way that no other exercise made them do, or maybe weights made me more aware of it。 I loved the feel of my body fighting to lift it, and then I was up, all the way up。 I'd done it! The thrill of adrenaline, the relief, and then the thought Can I do it again? I fought my arms to make sure the weight went down steady and controlled。 I touched my chest, this time a little more solidly, and there was that moment when the weight didn't want to be lifted。 I pushed and the elbow on my left arm hesitated again like the joint was thinking about it, and then the muscles kicked in and the bar started to rise。 I fought not to arch my back and cheat with more of my body than I was supposed to use。 There was a little more tremble in my arms as I got the bar all the way back up。 I debated on trying for a third rep, but the fine tremble in my muscles said no。 All I had to do now was put it back in the rack。 My arms were trembling visibly now。 Claudia started to put her hands on the bar, but I snarled, "No, don't touch it!"

She moved her hands wide so the room could see she wasn't helping。

I couldn't seem to sink it on the rack-it was like trying to thread a needle that weighed a ton when your arms were starting to do the spaghetti wobble。 I thought I was going to lose it for just a second and really regretted not letting Claudia help me, but then the bar sank home on the rack with a satisfyingly soft clank。 I was breathing hard but grinning up at her as she grinned down at me。 She offered me a fist to bump。 It took me two tries to manage with my arms a little wobbly。 "Personal best for you," she said。

"Two reps, that's all she can do at that weight, and she's supposed to be our queen," a male voice whined from across the room。 It was Kane, one of my least favorite people。 Perfect。

"Come over here and prove you can do better," Claudia said。

I sat up, careful not to bang my head on the now safely racked weight bar, and if you think that doesn't happen, you haven't been in enough weight rooms。 I sat on the bench with my arms still shaky。 We'd already done a full round of weights before we started with the pyramid sets, so I'd earned the sweat along my spine and the noodle arms。 I sat there letting my pulse and breathing get under control。 The fact that I was breathing as if I'd done cardio meant I'd really pushed myself for that personal best on the chest press。 Yay, me! Staring across the room at Kane, I didn't feel personally victorious, I felt defeated。 Kane was a problem that I didn't know how to fix, and he was right, technically I was about to be everyone's queen, and Kane wasn't the only one who thought I wasn't up to the job。 He was just the only one who was this vocal about it。 I'd kicked his ass twice, once with magic and once without。 I'd put a gun to his head that last time because there was only so much I could do against shapeshifters that could grow their own claws and fangs。 I was almost as fast and strong as they were, but I couldn't grow my own weapons。

The other man with him said, "Kane, we're here to work out, just leave it。"

"She's too human to be in charge of all of us, you said so yourself, Helios。"

Helios gave me a look that was almost pleading。 "I didn't say it to her face, though。 I'm sorry, Ms。 Blake, and I'm really sorry, Claudia。"

"Why are you sorrier to me than to Anita?" she asked。

"She may be queen someday, but you'll beat my ass in combatives。" The moment he called fight practice combatives, I knew he was one of the former military that we'd been hiring as guards。 Popping hot for lycanthropy-sorry, Therianthropy-was still an automatic discharge from all branches of military service, which meant we'd been picking up some well-trained talent courtesy of Uncle Sam's shortsighted policies。

"I think Anita could win on the mat," Claudia said。

Helios, who was blond and six feet tall, in obvious good shape, grinned。 "I didn't say she couldn't win on points, but she can't pound me into the mat, and you can。"

"Anita can't win unless she sucker punches you first," Kane said as he strutted his way through the full set of free weights with a few machines and big metal frames of the squat rack。 He was six feet even just like Helios, but where the former teams guy was starting to let his blond hair grow out, Kane still had his hair shaved down to dark stubble with that high widow's peak at the front so that the skin went back from it sharply, which always made me want to ask if he'd started shaving because he was going bald, or if it was just a fashion choice。 I knew it wasn't a military buzz, because Kane had never worn a uniform, he didn't have the discipline for it。

"Kane, we're here to work on your form in the weight room, not make trouble," Helios called after him。

Kane blinked big, dark brown eyes at me, because he was close enough for that kind of detail。 "It's not going to be any trouble," he answered the other man, but his attention was all on me。 The lack of hair left his face unadorned so you could see he had good bone structure and was handsome, almost prettily so; the body that showed around the tank top, exercise shorts, and jogging shoes wasn't bad, but it was more a body that was lean because he was built that way than lean because he worked out and watched his nutrition。

I feel like it's been a while since we've seen Rafael, and I've missed him。 Yes, he's arrogant, but that's kind of par for the course with most of Anita's men, and I've liked the back and forth between the wererat king and Anita since he first showed up in the series。 I've been a fan of the Anita Blake series since it all started, so it's safe to say I'm thoroughly invested at this point。 This 28th book in the series is a bit shorter than the norm, but we do still get quite a bit of the relation I feel like it's been a while since we've seen Rafael, and I've missed him。 Yes, he's arrogant, but that's kind of par for the course with most of Anita's men, and I've liked the back and forth between the wererat king and Anita since he first showed up in the series。 I've been a fan of the Anita Blake series since it all started, so it's safe to say I'm thoroughly invested at this point。 This 28th book in the series is a bit shorter than the norm, but we do still get quite a bit of the relationship angst that has been an ongoing theme for some time - or maybe that's relationships angst? Either way, it's there as well as Anita's indecision。 Granted, she's always been conflicted, but this is a strong woman who only gets stronger with each new big bad she faces, and with so much growth over the years, I would've expected some improvement there too。 And that lengthy issue over something as simple as walking into a shower room combined with all the discussion in the hallway is the only reason this one got 4 instead of 5 stars - because the last half of the book was exactly what I was hoping for。 It was exciting and dangerous and even creepy。 It was also fast-paced and frantic, which means I didn't stop turning pages until I'd read the last line for the whole second half of the book。 Another plus is the page time for Jean-Claude。 It's not as considerable as I would've liked, but given that this is Rafael's book, it's a fair amount。 I'd say if you're a long time fan of the series, this is one you'll want to read despite needing to wade through the angst of which lover might get their feelings hurt and how Anita can avoid doing that with so many。 So, it was good to catch up with Rafael, and I hope to see more of him in the future。 It was also nice to see a new Anita Blake book so soon after the last one。 The characters and the world Laurell K Hamilton has created are still hanging on tightly, and I'll be anxiously waiting for whatever's next。 。。。more

I have been waiting and waiting for this since it was announced, and read it in one sitting as soon as I got it out of the mailbox。 I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I’ve really missed the rat king in recent books! Rafael hasn’t had enough time on the page, neither has Claudia to be fair, but with Anita having such a wide variety in her life, people were going to fall to the wayside, so I’m glad Rafael and the rodere got their own book。Rafael is one of the shifters I really wanted to kn I have been waiting and waiting for this since it was announced, and read it in one sitting as soon as I got it out of the mailbox。 I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I’ve really missed the rat king in recent books! Rafael’s book feels overdue and I really enjoyed getting a glimpse of his kingdom。 We’ve had multiple books about wolves, leopards, lions, and hyenas while the rats stayed an unobtrusive constant in the background。It feels odd to admit that I don’t particularly love Rafael in his own book。 He’s interchangeably calculating, self-serving, whiny, and self-defeating。 He’s supposed to be an old soul, but his actions are naive and his interactions with women need work。 But he’s interesting。 And his world feels fresh and new。 Even after a couple dozen books, I was intrigued by the politics and the hierarchies in the rats’ world。The highlight of this book is the final 40%, where Rafael has to fight a challenger for his title and his life。 I love the gladiatorial style fighting arena and the complicated rules of engagement。 Anita is strong and she is flanked by Claudia (always a favourite) and Pierette, who really comes into her own in this story。The weaker part of the story is everything that comes before Anita’s trip to the rats’ warehouse。 At book 28, readers who’ve managed to stick with the series know all about the sexual dynamics between Anita and her lovers。 We know the power dynamics between Anita and her various lovers, triads, animals to call。。。 Two thirds of this book just rehashes all of these dynamics in long, complicated conversations。 I feel like we’ve even read identical conversations before。 There’s only one (very vanilla) sex scene in the book and it doesn’t involve any of the men I particularly like。 We get a glimpse of Micah and Nathaniel and a moment with Jean-Claude, but the rest is just talk。 The strategy conversations are interesting。 The power and sex conversations are just tiresome。 I'm starting to wonder if any of the long-planned weddings will ever happen – and if I'll still care by the time they do。My advice? Hardcore Anita fans like me can probably wait until this is released cheaply on Kindle。 I’d also suggest fans skip to chapter 15 for an exciting look at Rafael’s world without missing anything in the first 60% of the book。 Anyone who isn’t a massive fan of the series will be completely lost and should probably start at the beginning of Anita’s adventures。Erica – ☆☆☆4 stars for the latter portion。1-2 stars for well over the first half。3 stars in totalRafael is the 28th installment in the Anita Blake series。 No, it cannot be read as a standalone。 However, I don't believe there to be much confusion if a longtime reader of the series jumped ahead and read the novel if they weren't up-to-date, especially if they've read at least 20 or so of the novels。As a fan of the series, a fanatic of the author, I'm going to be brutally honest。 If you're not into the tedium of wading through relationship drama that has been rehashed for books upon books, I suggest you skip to around the 60% mark in the novel and read from there。The first 40% of the novel takes place in a hallway, Anita debating to take a shower, with whom (as to not hurt feelings), with how many (as if after working out you want to do anything but wash the sweat off yourself in privacy), who watches the shower take place (it's a freaking shower!), what will occur in the shower (other than washing herself)。Anita is so conflicted, she can't seem to make a decisive choice, use her voice, or trust her feelings, fearing she will hurt someone else's feelings over what she truly thinks or feels, to the point Anita has lost herself。Anita is deep in there somewhere, and she needs to leave town and all of these emotional vampires behind (some of them actual vampires, namely Asher) and get some perspective, allow herself to be herself, and be around people who actual care for her happiness and mental health。 Return with some perspective and break off romantic relationships with individuals who should just be family/friend/metaphysically bound/coworker – they do NOT need to be her partner。 The power imbalance of being in a romantic partnership with someone who is your subordinate is creepy at the very least。 Partners are equals。 If Anita is their Queen, she cannot be their equal。This would solve the marriage conundrum as well。 At this point, I hope Anita never marries, as I do not like many of them in how they do not put anyone but themselves first, coercing Anita into a position they all know she doesn't wish to be in。 Toxic。 Abusive。In the end, after 40% of a novel, Anita takes a shower, and after such deliberation, said shower takes half a page。 I was at a loss with that, to be honest, and closed out the novel because of it。Rafael, a strong character I've adored since he debuted in the first in the series。 The Rat King, a force to be reckoned with, loyal and logical, selflessly putting himself at risk to protect his people and the people of others。 Almost a male version of Anita。 The voice of reason, older than Anita, acting as a mentor and advisor when she needed advice the most。To be honest, I wish Rafael had stayed in the same category as Edward, with no sexual interaction between them。 I could respect him more had it stayed that way。Toward the latter portion of Rafael (the novel), the reader learns how the magical system for the rats differs from the other wereanimals。What bothered me greatly, especially in the first 60% (other than dragging their relationship like a dead horse) was the hypocrisy。 Anita is upset with Rafael for taking advantage during a metaphysical event, leaving her feeling as it was nonconsensual。After the reader was subjected to over a hundred pages of various characters shaming and coercing Rafael for not sleeping with a woman they specifically picked out for him (in that shower that barely took place, his NO making the shower short)。 Not once had Rafael shown interest, acted as if he needed to bed anyone else。 Perfectly content in his position in Anita's life。 (One of the easiest people in her life, but since he wasn't being demanding, clearly he was lying and needed more attention, right? Versus taking a King at his word。) Anita took his NO, after demanding explanation, as if Rafael had to defend his reasoning for not wishing to have sex with a random character。As a long-term fan, having read the initial books numerous times and the later books several, I still do not know half of the later people added to their poly group。 They're just there, coming on scene to mix things up, so many that they have zero personality and take away from the character development for the initial characters, lessening their relationships with Anita。 This particular woman's name starts with a P, and I've never found her particularly remarkable or memorable, only the name sparking my recollection when she randomly pops up。 Why P was so necessary at all in Rafael's novel, I have no idea。 Perhaps just so readers didn't forget her, because I forget her the instant her name isn't on the pages。After Anita pushed this woman onto Rafael, where he had to give his entire history as to why he didn't want to sleep with P, "Told" instead of "Shown" in a long dialogue。。。 Nathanial comes in, also guilting/shaming Rafael for not sleeping with the woman, because she's so beautiful and it will hurt her feelings。 Nathanial just couldn't rationalize why Rafael said no。Which of those scenarios features nonconsensual themes? Overstepping during metaphysical powers, or actual rape culture shown on the pages?I wish LKH would worry more about these characters professions, friends, hobbies, and getting lives of their own, instead of focusing on who is going to sleep with whom。 There is so much emotional baggage Anita is dragging, adding more people to occupy the people before, but then she takes on these new people's problems as if they're hers, and so on。。。 that I'm starting to loathe every single one of these needy, clingy, emotionally stunted individuals, many hundreds of years old acting as children。 These are not her problems。 I have problems in my own life, and it just stresses me out, the tedium and mental/emotional abuse from having these individuals in Anita's life。 It's beyond toxic and not a good representation of a poly relationship。My suggestion, skip to the end, where the action starts, where information of how the rats function both mystically and as a society, as that was interesting, but buried beneath so much filler that has been regurgitated over and over so many times。Recommended to long-time Anita Blake readers and LKH fans。 If you're in the relationship angst camp, read the entire novel。 If you find it tedious, skip to the part where that ends。 Most of the novels are on my reread list, Rafael is on par with Jason, where I wished I hadn't read it the first time。Reviewers received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads。 。。。more

Anita certainly has enough enemies, and if this causes a rift between Anita and her friend Rafael, then it’s got to be a plot!! The story was fast-paced and brought in characters from earlier books in the series。 And although I’ve only read the previous two book (serpentine and Sucker Punch) I didn’t feel like I’ve missed too much (but I have been reading the blurb from past books, and it’s a series I’m definitely interested in reading) It’s also shorter than most of her books, (I’ve read reviews that have complained about the amount of sex in previous books) I liked the focus on Rafael and the rats。 They’ve been characters for quite a while now, and it was finally time to get a closer look at them。Anita is also dealing with an issue, her super strength!! Getting over what her mind thinks she can and can’t do was good to read。 Most stories assume you’ll get the hang of it instantly, so it was good to see that side (the gym scene where she can bench press more than her mind thinks was safe was funny) There does seem like a lot of characters, most of them have been in previous books, so if I do go back, I’m going to write notes 😉on who is who。 But this style of writing kept me hooked until the last page。 As I said earlier, it’s shorter than other books, but it still crams in magic, relationships, fights and Anita’s witty banter。 。。。more

Rafael begins how most Anita Blake books do, with lots of relationship angst, which features the title character of this book。 I feel as though I haven't missed much even though I have not read the last 5 books, it was very nice catching up with these characters though。Anita has a lot to deal with this book, most of it new to her, the rest same stuff different day。 I thought she was able to handle most things well, but the relationship stuff and their brand of sex could go more to the background Rafael begins how most Anita Blake books do, with lots of relationship angst, which features the title character of this book。 I feel as though I haven't missed much even though I have not read the last 5 books, it was very nice catching up with these characters though。Anita has a lot to deal with this book, most of it new to her, the rest same stuff different day。 I thought she was able to handle most things well, but the relationship stuff and their brand of sex could go more to the background so we get character development and an actual conversation instead of listening to Anita's internal struggle of pretty much everything。 When we get to the story, the dilemma, and seeing how the rodre are as a group its a very enjoyable and good book。 I was not expecting to see the character that we really haven't seen since the beginning of the series。 It was an overall good book, with the same complaints most of us readers have had for awhile now。 Received ARC in exchange for voluntary honest review 。。。more

Rafael’s book feels overdue and I really enjoyed getting a glimpse of his kingdom。 We’ve had multiple books about wolves, leopards, lions and hyenas while the rats stayed an unobtrusive constant in the background。 It feels odd to admit that I don’t particularly love Rafael in his own book。 He’s interchangeably calculating, self-serving, whiny and self-defeating。 He’s supposed to be an old soul but his actions are naive and his interactions with women need work。 But he’s interesting。 And his world feels fresh and new。 Even after a couple dozen books, I was intrigued by the politics and the hierarchies in the rats’ world。 The highlight of this book is the final 40% where Rafael has to fight a challenger for his title and his life。 I love the gladiatorial style fighting arena and the complicated rules of engagement。 Anita is strong and she is flanked by Claudia (always a favourite) and Pierette, who really comes into her own in this story。The weaker part of the story is everything that comes before Anita’s trip to the rats’ warehouse。 At book 28, readers who’ve managed to stick with the series know all about the sexual dynamics between Anita and her lovers。 We know the power dynamics between Anita and her various lovers, triads, animals to call。。。 Two thirds of this book just rehashes all of these dynamics in long, complicated conversations。 I feel like we’ve even read identical conversations before。 There’s only one (very vanilla) sex scene in the book and it doesn’t involve any of the men I particularly like。 We get a glimpse of Micah and Nathaniel and a moment with Jean-Claude but the rest is just talk。 The strategy conversations are interesting。 The power and sex conversations are just tiresome。 I'm starting to wonder if any of the long-planned weddings will ever happen - and if I'll still care by the time they do。My advice? Hardcore Anita fans like me can probably wait until this is released cheaply on Kindle。 I’d also suggest fans skip to chapter 15 for an exciting look at Rafael’s world without missing anything in the first 60% of the book。 Anyone who isn’t a massive fan of the series will be completely lost and should probably start at the beginning of Anita’s adventures。 。。。more

Rafael is the 28th book in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter saga by Laurell K。 Hamilton。 In some ways, the series has changed a lot over the decades - remember when Anita was virginal, interested in dating only one person at a time, and hated the monsters? And in others, it hasn't changed at all - straight forward plots where Anita gets to be a badass, loyal to the people she cares about, not the quickest at figuring out emotions, and sometimes really angry。That's what "Rafael" is - a fairly stra Rafael is the 28th book in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter saga by Laurell K。 Hamilton。 In some ways, the series has changed a lot over the decades - remember when Anita was virginal, interested in dating only one person at a time, and hated the monsters? And in others, it hasn't changed at all - straight forward plots where Anita gets to be a badass, loyal to the people she cares about, not the quickest at figuring out emotions, and sometimes really angry。That's what "Rafael" is - a fairly straightforward plot with several opportunities for Anita to demonstrate her increasing badassery。 We also get brief check-ins with many of the huge cast of characters, even if it's just a sentence explaining their absences。 Anita's friend with benefits and ally, Rafael, the king of the wererats has been fighting challengers to his throne。 He's worried about the most recent challenge and asks Anita to attend his upcoming fight for the throne。 Of course, it isn't quite that straightforward because this is Anita。 While some of the rodere appreciate what Anita and Jean-Claude have done for the wererats。 Others think Rafael is selling them into slavery as food and soldiers。 I enjoyed getting a deeper look into the world of the wererats, their culture and more intriguingly, their magic。 I hope their brujas show up in future books。 Rafael's been around a long time in the series so it was fun to take a closer look at his personality - like his girlfriend picker is broken。 Funny comment about him hooking up with Anita。Lots of fighter and weapons talk as Anita hones her newly acquired strength and speed。 Several confrontations lead to bloodiness so long time series character wererat Dr。 Lillian gets to make an appearance。 There's also a fair amount of bloodiness although by book #28, I'm guessing there aren't any squeamish readers left。Some interesting callbacks to Big Bads from previous books。 I wonder if LKH is setting up future storylines。 She also hinted at possible storylines where Asher is redeemed and an understanding with Narcissus is reached。We even got a brief upcoming wedding update - another acknowledgment that her bio family is the worst。If you're new to the series, this isn't a great entry point。 For fans of Anita, this is a solidly satisfying story - hitting the storytelling beats that we readers enjoy about the series - a badass woman, loyal to those she cares about, ready to defend what's hers against the Big Bad with descriptions of some seriously hot eye candy along the way。 Latinx, LGBTQ+ and nonbinary rep。 。。。more

Versus taking a King at his word) Anita took his NO, after demanding explanation, as if Rafael had to defend his reasoning for not wishing to have sex with a random character。 As a long-term fan, having read the initial books numerous times and the later books several, I still do not know half of the later people added to their poly group。 They're just there, coming on scene to mix things up, so many that they have zero personality and take away from the character development for the initial characters, lessening their relationships with Anita。 This particular woman's name starts with a P, and I've never found her particularly remarkable or memorable, only the name sparking my recollection when she randomly pops up。 Why P was so necessary at all in Rafael's novel, I have no idea。 Perhaps just so readers didn't forget her, because I forget her the instant her name isn't on the pages。After Anita pushed this woman onto Rafael, where he had to give his entire history as to why he didn't want to sleep with P, "Told" instead of "Shown" in a long dialogue。。。 Nathanial comes in, also guilting/shaming Rafael for not sleeping with the woman, because she's so beautiful and it will hurt her feelings。 Nathanial just couldn't rationalize why Rafael said no。Which of those scenarios features nonconsensual themes? Overstepping during metaphysical powers, or actual rape culture shown on the pages?I wish LKH would worry more about these characters professions, friends, hobbies, and getting lives of their own, instead of focusing on who is going to sleep with whom。 There is so much emotional baggage Anita is dragging, adding more people to occupy the people before, but then she takes on these new people's problems as if they're hers, and so on。。。 that I'm starting to loathe every single one of these needy, clingy, emotionally stunted individuals, many hundreds of years old acting as children。 These are not her problems。 I have problems in my own life, and it just stresses me out, the tedium and mental/emotional abuse from having these individuals in Anita's life。 It's beyond toxic and not a good representation of a poly relationship。 My suggestion, skip to the end, where the action starts, where information of how the rats function both mystically and as a society, as that was interesting, but buried beneath so much filler that has been regurgitated over and over so many times。 Recommended to long-time Anita Blake readers and LKH fans。 If you're in the relationship angst camp, read the entire novel。 If you find it tedious, skip to the part where that ends。 Most of the novels are on my reread list, Rafael is on par with Jason, where I wished I hadn't read it the first time。 Click "Spoiler" to reveal commentary as I read Rafael, my personal thoughts that aren't appropriate for a professional review。 Thank you。 (view spoiler)[Review under construction The relationship angst is beyond tedious。 Talking everything to death, even when to walk into a communal shower。 Currently 20% of the novel has been back and forth, dragging relationship drama like a dead horse, while debating whether or not to shower。 Anita Blake is one of my favorite series, many things written deeply resonating within me。 But sometimes the tedium is exhausting。 I could empathize with Anita running away and never coming back。 Going out of town on a case must be refreshing and relaxing, contrary to how it would be stressful and exhausting for everyone else on the planet, simply because it gets her away from the 50+ people emotionally draining her。 This is why I enjoyed Sucker Punch so much, as the focus truly was on Anita, the case, and Olaf and Edward, who are the least demanding people in her life。 I don't find this back-and-forth, talking a subject to death entertaining in the least。 Arguing over the pronunciation and definition of words。 Dealing with irrational jealousy from an ex's new partner。 Back-and-forth negotiations with an audience over the most innocuous of decisions (when to shower-to shower together-to shower with others in the shower。 Enough! Just freaking take a shower already) Every word was tedious。 It slows the pacing down, makes me disengage, where I either stop reading entirely or want to skim-read to get to anything of substance。 Tedious and exhausting 20% in with nothing of note happening。 Honestly, this must be how Anita feels every second of her life, and I couldn't handle it。40% of the novel spent talking everything to death while standing in the hallway。 The shower itself, after so much strife and negotiation, was half a page。 Nearly half the novel of nothing but back-and-forth dialogue。This is my attempt to advocate for Anita, imploring LKH to fix it。 Anita has lost her voice。 The fact that it takes nearly 40% of a novel to make a decision on whether or not to shower, with whom to shower, and what to do once in the shower, shows just how far Anita has fallen。 The fact that after all that, the shower took less than half a page。A shower is a shower。 Anita shouldn't have to fret, fearing hurting someone's feelings, if she wants to shower in private, if she wants to only shower with specific people, if she does or doesn't want to be intimate with someone while in the shower, or watched in a very intimate moment by dozens of eyes。 Just as Anita shouldn't have to lie to herself, convince herself, that she is sexually attracted to someone when she isn't。 She shouldn't have to steel her resolve and bury her true emotions and do what they wish her to do。 Anita has lost her voice, her ability to feel what she is feeling, to express what she is feeling, and speak her mind。 The Anita from the first book, from ten books ago, she would not be walking on eggshells。 She would not be negotiating whom to marry, whom to be in a romantic relationship with。 Sexuality isn't a choice。 Love isn't a choice。 Anita is being coerced into sexual, romantic, and intimate relationships with far too many characters, and she is losing herself in the process。 Love and caring and compassion comes in many forms。 There are many types of relationships。 You make your own family。 You do not have to be in a romantic or sexual relationship with everyone。 Anita has perfected this with her cop and marshal services families, the boundaries set and the respect and love and connection are felt by all readers。 There is zero connection between Anita and half of the characters she is currently involved in sexual, romantic relationships。 Forced。 Coerced。 Demanded。 Made to feel ashamed for not feeling what doesn't come naturally, so she pretends。 It's disturbing。 Anita's men found other relationships with men and women, supposedly to lighten the emotional tax that was draining her dry。 Yet it's written as if she is now responsible for their boyfriends and girlfriends, as if they are now hers too。 Responsible in all ways, including sexually gratifying them。 NO。 They are NOT Anita's Girlfriend/Boyfriend, just because they are to one of her lovers。 They shouldn't be, and why poly is being written as such。。。 She shouldn't have have to deal with them, the connecting party "should be" the one drawing and maintaining the boundary。 The opener of Rafael, Anita is dealing with Asher's boyfriend。 She shouldn't have to deal with him at all。 The very fact that she is means Asher hasn't learned anything。 The fact that JC was more concerned with Anita cuddling with him and Asher, because it would be easier for him no longer being the only person who forgave Asher, than actually getting their behinds out of bed and HELPING with the newest drama。。。 the fact that cuddling with Asher moments after dealing with his jealous boyfriend is fuel to the fire。 But they don't care- everyone wants what they want, and they want it from Anita, not caring what cost she has to pay, including JC。 Why should Anita cuddle with Asher, which JC can feel she doesn't want to do, inciting violence with Asher's jealous boyfriend, after she just left him in the gym, where he was abusive toward her。 This is all a waste of Anita's time, using her to play petty games, when these are centuries' old vampires acting as teenagers hoping to make their crush jealous to get some attention。 It's disgusting, compounded with the fact it was more important than dealing with the actual crisis occurring。 If this is what LKH thinks a poly relationship is like, it's worrisome。 Just because Anita is metaphysically tied to someone doesn't mean she should have to be in a romantic and sexual relationship with them, nor does it mean she needs to marry them。 The metaphysical tie is enough。 Enough is enough。 The story is lost beneath the mountain of characters Anita is meant to support in all ways。 They need lives。 They need careers and hobbies and friends and family。 They need their own romantic interests, instead of waiting around like children for their mother。 Most so emotionally stunted, they run to her when they see her, jump into her arms when she is barely 5 foot tall, wrap their legs around her waist, and squeal like children, then demand to be bedded。 It's beyond disturbing。 Bedding someone who sees you in a position of power over them, someone with the mentality of a small child。 Sick。 LKH, I implore you。 Find a way to fix it。 Find a way to cull the herd。 Send them to new locations, for careers, schooling, friends, or lovers。 Find a way to lessen this burden。 Because they truly are nothing but a burden, to the story itself but truly to Anita。 Because Anita has lost her voice, lost her ability to feel what she feels and not be shamed for feeling what she isn't。 Her connection to the ones she truly loves, cares about, and is attracted to are lessened by this herd of clingy, needy, demanding characters who do nothing but take and give absolutely nothing to the story or Anita。 (hide I’m a fan of the Anita Blake series。 I love the early books (up through 10 or so) and stuck with it through the later ones。 Rafael wasn’t one of my favorites, though I don’t think the fault lies entirely with the plot。 The later Anita Blake books simply have so many characters who are in so many relationships, that it is hard to follow without a diagram。 The multitude of relationships also means that it is hard to really connect or focus on a particular character。 So, in principle, I like the id I’m a fan of the Anita Blake series。 I love the early books (up through 10 or so) and stuck with it through the later ones。 Rafael wasn’t one of my favorites, though I don’t think the fault lies entirely with the plot。 The later Anita Blake books simply have so many characters who are in so many relationships, that it is hard to follow without a diagram。 The multitude of relationships also means that it is hard to really connect or focus on a particular character。 So, in principle, I like the idea of Rafael having his own short novel。 I liked getting more of Rafael’s backstory。 He is one of the few characters that has been around since the very beginning of the series, and while he often plays an important role, he is never in the story spotlight。 Getting to explore the culture of the were-rats was interesting, but I found it very hard to swallow。 How could they have powerful magic users, with powers similar to some Anita has encountered elsewhere, and there was not even a hint? I thought it was a lot to ask readers to believe。 And more bits of previously-thought-defeated master vampires popping up? Been there, done that plot。 I will continue to look forward to new Anita releases, but my mixed feelings on this one means I give it 3 stars。 (please note, we do not post negative reviews on our website, so if I can’t give it 4 or 5 stars, we won’t publicize the review) 。。。more

I lost interest in this series when LKH decided that polyamorous was the way to go。 I see nothing wrong with it; I just got tired of her books being porn and not the action stories they used to be。However, this book and LKH's last book Sucker Punch made me reconsider reading the rest of the series。 There was a little less sex and a bit more action。 However, I will say that we do spend at least half of the book discussing (ad nauseam) everything within an inch of its life! I will never not want more Anita Blake novels。 Literally this series could go on for another 30 books and I would be happy as can be。 If you are picking this up then you have read all the other books int he series and you know as well as I do that it will be amazing。 The last few books have had some big changes to our crew and that took a little side stepping in Anita's world but I felt like this one brought it back full circle at least little。 Technically this is a standalone in the Anita Bla I will never not want more Anita Blake novels。 Literally this series could go on for another 30 books and I would be happy as can be。 If you are picking this up then you have read all the other books int he series and you know as well as I do that it will be amazing。 The last few books have had some big changes to our crew and that took a little side stepping in Anita's world but I felt like this one brought it back full circle at least little。 Technically this is a standalone in the Anita Blake world, but it was amazing。 I love Raphael and who know that a whereat would be one of my new favorites in this world? This novel had a good dose of the relationship drama we all love and a good dose of action。 I liked that it as pretty well balanced and it left me very excited for the next read in the Anita Blake world。 。。。more

Rafael, the rat king, has been challenged for leadership。 With Peirette by her side, Anita goes to the heart of the rat people to be by his side to support His fight for leadership。 I loved it。 This story reminded me of the original Anita Blake books。 Though there were a few steamy parts, the metaphysics and character development was the main thrust of the story。 Blood, magic and nitty gritty fighting made this story not only a must read, but a must read twice book。 I received this book free fro Rafael, the rat king, has been challenged for leadership。 With Peirette by her side, Anita goes to the heart of the rat people to be by his side to support His fight for leadership。 I loved it。 This story reminded me of the original Anita Blake books。 Though there were a few steamy parts, the metaphysics and character development was the main thrust of the story。 Blood, magic and nitty gritty fighting made this story not only a must read, but a must read twice book。 I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Welcome back, Ms。 Hamilton! Rafael is a bit about our wererat King and more about Anita。 In this latest installment of the popular Anita Blake series, I am reminded of why I loved this series so much。 The first book I read of Ms。 Hamilton was Obsidian Butterfly。 My spouse found it at a Borders store, read the book blurb and insisted that I needed to read this book。 This could be a new author I have been looking for。 Back in 2002, I thought, sure, why not? I was very pleasantly surprised by this book。 I began reading this series twenty years ago and for the longest time Obsidian Butterfly was my favorite。 I, like many other hardcore LKH fans, had put the books aside as the series became more erotica/relationship-centric and less action/mystery/badassery。 I was thrilled when I read Sucker Punch and saw a return in personality to the older books。 With Raphael I expected that excitement to wane as many of her character titled books focus on relations I was very pleasantly surprised by this book。 I began reading this series twenty years ago and for the longest time Obsidian Butterfly was my favorite。 I, like many other hardcore LKH fans, had put the books aside as the series became more erotica/relationship-centric and less action/mystery/badassery。 I was thrilled when I read Sucker Punch and saw a return in personality to the older books。 With Raphael I expected that excitement to wane as many of her character titled books focus on relationship development or sexual clarifications。 I am glad she was able to meld the two genres here。 The blend was tasteful and tantalizing。 I was provide the right balance of sex, character development, action, and plot。 Wonderful story, great addition of new characters as well as the return of some long forgotten ones。 I would suggest not adding so many new characters every single time。 I’m aging with this series and my memory is starting to give the older I get。 I don’t always have the time to go back thirteen or so books for a refresher either so it may benefit older audiences not to have to recall so many nonessential side characters。 As a reader and long time fan, thank you to LKH who has taken on us on a wonderful rollercoaster with this series。 I look forward tohearing Anita’s next major steps in life。 There have been hints of a baby in Anita’s future。 That and the wedding are exciting plots。 I somewhat hope to see Olaf again。 It was unusual to have him pop up as a romantic interest in the last book but completely disappear in this one。 Weirdly he has become a fan favorite。 Perhaps it is the Hannibal Lector or Dexter fan in me that wants a happy ending for him while at the same time wanting to kill off his rapist ass。 LKH will probably have fun figuring out that one。 Conclusively, excellent book。 Had a few flaws but overall a fantastic read! 。。。more

But a very important one with the seeds of bigger plots to come。。。Plot/Pacing: ★★★★ 1/2Character development: ★★★★New ideas: ★★★★Enjoyment: ★★★★Let's get a housekeeping note out of the way。 Yes, I love this series。 Yes, I know that they are not everyone's cup of tea。 I'm also aware that they tend to be a bit long-winded, overly invested in the relationship drama, and sometimes get tediously caught up in dialogue。 That's just part of what this series is about - and I, for one, have loved them for years。 So please note my deep affection for this series and take that into account for my reviews。Rafael is latest entry into the world of Anita Blake, a version of the U。S。 where vampires, were-animals, and the undead all exist in our modern society with interesting—and often bloody—results。 This is not an entry point novel for the series。 In this latest installment, we finally(!) get a window in the world of the rat king, Rafael。 The wererats have been a powerful were-animal faction in St。 Louis for some time in the Anita Blake novels and are known for their fighting ability, their pack's strength, and the fact that their national king, Rafael, has been an ally to Anita Blake for years。 It's time to peel back the curtain on what goes on in the kingdom。。。Rafael is in trouble。 His ties to Anita—and therefore his perceived ties to Jean Claude and the other weres in Anita's sphere—have made him appear weak to the rest of the wererats across the country。 They think it's time for a new king。 And the way the rats determine their ruler is by blood。 Specifically, a fight to the death。 So Rafael's been fighting in the pits now, defending his crown and title, for some time。 The only way to become the new rat king is to kill the old one。。。Anita Blake wasn't aware of just how bad Rafael's standing has gotten。 When he asks her to attend this latest pit fight against the best challenger yet, Anita knows something must be different about this fight。 For the first time, Rafael doesn't know if he's going to win。 When Anita shows up, to her horror she realizes that a) there's someone familiar pulling the challenger's strings and b) her relationship to Rafael is about to get tested, and brutally。 Can she fight her way to the top of the rat pile and assert her place while protecting Rafael from this latest deadly threat? We know she can, she's Anita Blake, but what exactly will she learn along the way? There's a different kind of magic amongst the rodere that they've kept hidden for some time。。。I thought this was one of the strongest entries into the Anita Blake series that we've seen in quite some time。 Part of that was due to its subject—Rafael's world has never been fully described, so the newness was appealing to me—and the other part was its sheer short length。 We didn't have time to get overly drawn into the relationship dramas (even though the characters did their best to do so anyway!) and therefore a lot of the usual "not this again!" feelings weren't present。 I am also extremely intrigued at what the author alluded to with the addition of the wererats' magic systems。。。 it bodes well for Anita Blake's character arc and opens the door for more books to come featuring this new thing。 Don't skip this one in the series, folks! It's a good one and not the usual spin-off fare。 Thank you to Berkley for my copy in exchange for an honest review。Blog | Instagram 。。。more

I like these quick books focused mainly on a single character and their relationship with Anita。 This was a much-needed break after Sucker Punch (which was the first Anita Blake book I hated)。 Sucker Punch was a repetitive mess with a horrible ending。 Rafael was a look at a character we've only caught glimpses of before。 This book really showcases the King of Rats and the world of the rats including their rules and their magic。 It opens the doors to a whole new world of possibilities for the oth I like these quick books focused mainly on a single character and their relationship with Anita。 This was a much-needed break after Sucker Punch (which was the first Anita Blake book I hated)。 Sucker Punch was a repetitive mess with a horrible ending。 Rafael was a look at a character we've only caught glimpses of before。 This book really showcases the King of Rats and the world of the rats including their rules and their magic。 It opens the doors to a whole new world of possibilities for the other weres and for Anita who learns how to tap into, yet another set of powers。 This book alludes to events and characters from Obsidian Butterfly and Narcissus in Chains, so you might want a refresher on those two books before diving into this one。I need an ongoing character list with quick descriptions to keep track of all the people in Anita's life。 This has got to be the most character-filled series to ever exist and it gets hard to keep track of whose who。 。。。more
