Summary

A small community。 A deadly secret。

Until recently, Isobel has always loved The Close。 A quiet road of large houses tucked away in the beautiful English countryside, it seemed like the perfect place to live。

Then, six months ago, a young man was killed in a mysterious hit-and-run incident。 The police investigated but no one was charged。

It’s left a bad feeling in this little community, a feeling that someone knows more than they are saying。

So when new neighbour Linette arrives, Isobel thinks it’s the perfect chance to make a fresh start, to repair relationships and rebuild her community。

But someone else has a very different plan, and bad things start to happen。

When there’s another death, Isobel realises her home, her marriage, and her family are all in terrible danger。 She is certain that what’s happening is connected to the hit-and-run。 But how? What really happened on the night of the fatal accident? And above all, who is Linette and what does she really want?

The story revolves around the neighbours who live on The Close, a small group of people who may be hiding something。 The story is mainly told through the character is Isobel Floyd, a stay at home mum to Harper and Harry, who has just been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum。 Her husband Mike is an architect, like she was until their first child was born。 Her marriage has become somewhat stale over the past year or so and Mike is working ever longer hours and doesn’t seem to be interested i The story revolves around the neighbours who live on The Close, a small group of people who may be hiding something。 The story is mainly told through the character is Isobel Floyd, a stay at home mum to Harper and Harry, who has just been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum。 Her husband Mike is an architect, like she was until their first child was born。 Her marriage has become somewhat stale over the past year or so and Mike is working ever longer hours and doesn’t seem to be interested in any family time。 Six months ago, nineteen year old Wilson Walker was killed in an apparent hit and run accident in the Cloe, but no one was ever found or charged for his death。 His parents and younger brother moved away shortly after。 Now a new neighbour called Linette has moved into the Walker residence and is apparently renting it after a nasty divorce。 She seems to get on with everyone in the Close and holds a couple of events in her home that bring the other neighbours together。 Thomas Adler, who works from home doing some sort of tech job and very successfully, if his numerous flash cars are anything to go by。 Mr Quinn who has allowed this perfect stranger to help look after his wife, who has dementia, yet refused Isobel’s offers of help。 Then there are the Abbots, Josie and Jack and their three young children。 Jack is a farmer and the land around has been in his family for generations, but they are struggling to make ends meet。 Josie used to be a good friend of Isobel’s but has been really distant for the past year or so。Isobel hopes that this fresh blood in the neighbourhood may bring all the neighbours back close together and the type of neighbours they should be in。 But then Linette comes out with some very strange comments almost completely turning 180 on her previous comments and opinions about other neighbours and the area。 Some of it is excused as her not knowing what country life is like and how neighbours act towards each other in such close knit areas。 Trouble starts to happen, starting with unwelcome partygoers, demonstrators against a new business suggested by one of the neighbours, leaf burning with no consideration to the wind direction, a pet pig and not a micro pig, to lots of rumours gong round and accusations being made by different neighbours。 Isobel runs a small beauty business, mainly doing ladies nails, but a rumour is started about bad practices and followed by bad reviews, soon leaving her small side business failing and more questions about her marriage and her husband’s frequent long days and lack of support。 Linette is not who she seems and is hiding loads of secrets about her reasons for moving into the Close。 The death of Wilson comes back into the mix as another death occurs and Isobel is left wondering whether it is all connected。 She is losing her business, may have already lost her husband and if the neighbour’s plans go ahead, she could lose her home and any chance of the country idyll she thought she would experience。 As she tries to figure out who is out to get her and what the new neighbour has to do with everything that seems to be happening, she places herself in danger, with the very person responsible for a number of deaths and the last person she would ever have expected was behind matters。 Good thing she has a loving mum who can help look after the kids and take them away from all the confusion going on when the police are everywhere。 Having an autistic child makes change, loud noises and bright lights, that much more difficult to handle。 Each of the neighbours has secrets they are keeping from others in the Close and they are all about to come out into the open in the worst possible way! A wonderful look at a small microcosm of life and the secrets that we all hold, and the consequences that can occur when they are revealed。 Nothing stays hidden forever and secrets are never a good thing, especially in a marriage。 I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above。 。。。more

Books like this are just so clever and Miranda Rijks is simply the queen of this genre。 The more pages you read, the more you question everyone around you in real life。。。 'where was he that day, why didn't she reply straight away, is so and so ignoring me or didn't they see me。。。'At first glance, The Close sounds idyllic。 However, since one of the neighbours was killed in a hit and run things haven't been quite the same and people have been keeping themselves to themselves。And yet, when a brand Books like this are just so clever and Miranda Rijks is simply the queen of this genre。 The more pages you read, the more you question everyone around you in real life。。。 'where was he that day, why didn't she reply straight away, is so and so ignoring me or didn't they see me。。。'At first glance, The Close sounds idyllic。 However, since one of the neighbours was killed in a hit and run things haven't been quite the same and people have been keeping themselves to themselves。And yet, when a brand new neighbour arrives she seems to effortlessly infiltrate closed community and soon is having little rendezvous with everyone and seemingly wants to bring the close together。Isobel appears a bit lonely, her relationship with her husband is strained from years of marriage, working long hours and a lack of closeness。 Her relationship with her best friend seems to have been soured by something and I felt for her as the sense of isolation grew。This is classic Rijks, if you enjoyed her previous books it is fair to say you will enjoy this one too! There are little 'reveals' throughout which help you to confirm your thinking, or do they lead you up the garden path? I raced through the pages as I had to know what happened。 。。。more

Loud parties into the early morning hours, unkind gossip, a pet pig that destroyed backyards, and more make Isobel wonder if Linette is a good fit。 It seems like there has been an unsettled feeling in The Close since shortly after she arrived。 As more and more odd things happen, Isobel becomes suspicious of her neighbors and one in particular。 When Lynette says something about a neighbor and someone Isobel is close to, Isobel doesn’t believe her; at least she doesn’t want to believe her。 But, yet it tugs at her thoughts。 Soon she goes on a search, and she can’t believe what she finds。 Can it be true? I was given The New Neighbour to read and review。 Thank you to the author, Inkubator Books and NetGalley。 。。。more

Miranda Rijks Is one of my go-to dependable authors for when I need a quick, but twisty, domestic thriller。 It’s all here in the Close, a middle class cul-de-sac in suburbia。 When it comes to choices, neighbors are the ones we have no real control over - noisy or nosy ones come to mind but manifest as murderers in most of my favorite novels。 A fast read with a couple of major twists lead to a surprising final reveal。

This book had a great premise and a strong start, but by the end, I felt like I had read two books that were mashed together。 It was almost as if the author couldn’t decide which way to go with the twists, so they all just got thrown in。 I thought things were going one way until an incident about halfway through。 Then I thought that was a genius twist that would continue to produce answers。 Instead, it was a twist that sent the story in a completely different direction。 As a result, I felt like This book had a great premise and a strong start, but by the end, I felt like I had read two books that were mashed together。 It was almost as if the author couldn’t decide which way to go with the twists, so they all just got thrown in。 I thought things were going one way until an incident about halfway through。 Then I thought that was a genius twist that would continue to produce answers。 Instead, it was a twist that sent the story in a completely different direction。 As a result, I felt like some of the groundwork from the first half was lost in the second。 However, there were still plenty of twists in the second half。 I just wish there had been more consistency all the way through。 I still did like the book, and I am a huge fan of this author。 I do recommend it because you probably won’t guess the ultimate plot twist。 For more details, please visit Fireflies and Free Kicks。 This review was written based on a digital copy of the book from Inkubator Books。 。。。more

A new woman moves in on a street with a lot going on。 A boy was killed less than a year ago and the neighbors have a lot of secrets。For me the book started out a little slow but quickly picked up。 There are a lot of characters in the neighbors on the street but it was easy to keep them straight。 This story shows that a quiet little street is never quiet。 I’ll admit I did not guess the ending and it was a complete surprise! I loved that I didn’t know what was coming。

The main character was too cringey for me。 Between that and the huge gaps in her thought process/inability to reason/total obliviousness, I don't really recommend this except to anyone looking for a thriller that will not keep them up at night。 The main character was too cringey for me。 Between that and the huge gaps in her thought process/inability to reason/total obliviousness, I don't really recommend this except to anyone looking for a thriller that will not keep them up at night。 。。。more
