Summary

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A moving account of resilience, hope, fear and mortality, and how these things resonate in our lives, by actor and advocate Michael J。 Fox。

The entire world knows Michael J。 Fox as Marty McFly, the teenage sidekick of Doc Brown in Back to the Future; as Alex P。 Keaton in Family Ties; as Mike Flaherty in Spin City; and through numerous other movie roles and guest appearances on shows such as The Good Wife and Curb Your Enthusiasm。 Diagnosed at age 29, Michael is equally engaged in Parkinson's advocacy work, raising global awareness of the disease and helping find a cure through The Michael J。 Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, the world's leading non-profit funder of PD science。 His two previous bestselling memoirs, Lucky Man and Always Looking Up, dealt with how he came to terms with the illness, all the while exhibiting his iconic optimism。 His new memoir reassesses this outlook, as events in the past decade presented additional challenges。

In No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality, Michael shares personal stories and observations about illness and health, aging, the strength of family and friends, and how our perceptions about time affect the way we approach mortality。 Thoughtful and moving, but with Fox's trademark sense of humor, his book provides a vehicle for reflection about our lives, our loves, and our losses。

Running through the narrative is the drama of the medical madness Fox recently experienced, that included his daily negotiations with the Parkinson's disease he's had since 1991, and a spinal cord issue that necessitated immediate surgery。 His challenge to learn how to walk again, only to suffer a devastating fall, nearly caused him to ditch his trademark optimism and "get out of the lemonade business altogether。"

Does he make it all of the way back? Read the book。

I found myself returning to the pages, every possible moment。 It is so well-written - humour and honesty about his and his family’s experiences revealed his strength and vulnerability, grounded in deep and abiding love and hope。 This is my life language! I appreciated and celebrated throughout the book, even as I felt (in my own way) the very real and daunting challenges that peppered the pages。I urge others to read this book。 Now。 Our world needs the genuine positivity this book shares。 The style of writing is captivating; it’s a page-turner。 I was engaged from page one, and that was sustained throughout。 I know I will read this book again and will glean even more wisdom。I participated in some fundraisers for the Michael J。 Fox Foundation and the American Cancer Society in the virtual reality world of Second Life (TM, Linden Lab), and enjoyed doing so。 I have been away from SL for awhile due to my own health issues (successful cancer treatment and it’s aftermath)。 I will return now and seek new opportunities to offer support。Thank you, Michael and family, for this beautiful book。 I love the quotation from Mr。Pollan at the end。 I agree! Hope is sustainable!I close, wishing you all well and praising this book! 。。。more

Not very interesting。

It’s the only audiobook I listened to at regular speed, and it was quietly optimistic and joyful。

I have read a few autobiography's this year and enjoy viewing the world from a different standpoint。 It is most enjoyable to hear the words in the authors own voice 。 Initially I felt MJF was reading too quickly and it was a bit difficult to understand, but that very quickly disappeared and I couldn't wait to get back to my daily walk and listen。 Yes he is an optimist but also acknowledges that that does not happen automatically, there is effort and desire to get there。 I most enjoyed his quote I have read a few autobiography's this year and enjoy viewing the world from a different standpoint。 It is most enjoyable to hear the words in the authors own voice 。 Initially I felt MJF was reading too quickly and it was a bit difficult to understand, but that very quickly disappeared and I couldn't wait to get back to my daily walk and listen。 Yes he is an optimist but also acknowledges that that does not happen automatically, there is effort and desire to get there。 I most enjoyed his quote “With gratitude, optimism becomes sustainable。”This is so much more that a record of his life, this is truly about the person。 I would recommend this book to not only MJF fans but anyone that enjoys inspirational reads。 。。。more

I always enjoy his books, but this one seems to just be more like ramblings。

Lupine Smile

Interesting, but a little jumpy in subject matter。 No pun intended。

Jaclyn

Highly recommended。 Lots of inspiration to be found here 。。。 and shared in a very articulate way。 Interesting from start to finish。

Not his best book, but there were some really interesting pieces。 I found it was a little disjointed。 Overall, worth it to read。

Wow does this man have an experience worth writing about! MJF manages to be witty & vulnerable in writing about his most recent experiences living with the degenerative disease Parkinson’s - and to add to that - going through spinal surgery! I will never whinge about my aches & ailments again。 Really well written & insightful。

Sandi

An enjoyable, engaging, enriching memoir。 Michael J Fox fears he is losing his religion。 His faith, optimism, is tested by a year of extra difficulties – bereavement, spinal surgery, and a broken arm – and the challenge of growing old with Parkison’s。 He resolves gratitude is how ‘optimism becomes sustainable。’ A short, easy read but rich with MJF’s humour, insights, and thought-provoking observations。 Great account of the power of optimism。

Jonathan Cavazos

Interesting look at a man living with Parkinson’s Disease。 It sounds like a nightmare。

Awesome read!

Borrrrring。

A detailed account that often sounds like two steps forward, one step back, keep calm, and carry on。

A book that could be so, so much more。 As someone who has PD and survived a spinal tumor, MJ Fox had the opportunity to dig deep into concepts regarding resilience, privilege, and perception while sharing his experience of shift in perception that is analogous to what many of us go through。 A missed opportunity to leverage a relatively shared experience to examine aspects of being human, regardless of status or context。 Instead the book feels repetitive and is almost completely inward-facing, ot A book that could be so, so much more。 As someone who has PD and survived a spinal tumor, MJ Fox had the opportunity to dig deep into concepts regarding resilience, privilege, and perception while sharing his experience of shift in perception that is analogous to what many of us go through。 A missed opportunity to leverage a relatively shared experience to examine aspects of being human, regardless of status or context。 Instead the book feels repetitive and is almost completely inward-facing, other than its generous helping of name dropping - it could have been half as long without losing much。 Turned from reading to skimming near the middle when a page was devoted to describing how they figured how to get people home between Baltimore and NYC, including how his son was a 'soldier' for taking the train。 Disappointed because MJ Fox has done astounding things for raising awareness and decreasing stigma around PD (not to mention the money raised for research) and he interviews so well。 I think we're going to see another book from him in the next few years and hope he rises to the challenge! 。。。more

3。75 stars。 I really appreciated the affirmation regarding which aspects of Parkinson's explain what I am currently dealing with。 It really clarified for me that Parkinson's is a "movement disorder", and I can tell you exactly how that manifests itself in my body and my experience! Michael J。 Fox will simply always be one of my favorites in any medium。 He writes damn well - I've read them all。 I enjoyed Always Looking Up a bit more than this one, but I appreciated this book quite a bit and think it will also stay with me, as I ponder my own future。 Michael J。 Fox will simply always be one of my favorites in any medium。 He writes damn well - I've read them all。 I enjoyed Always Looking Up a bit more than this one, but I appreciated this book quite a bit and think it will also stay with me, as I ponder my own future。 。。。more

This book was excellent。 Michael J。 Fox tells his inspirational stories about what his life is like for him living with Parkinson's Disease and still being a working actor。 He delves into when he found out and how he felt。 Despite all the setbacks, Michael J。 Fox never gets down on himself or the diagnosis。 He deals with everything head-on。 I can't recommend this book enough。 This book was excellent。 Michael J。 Fox tells his inspirational stories about what his life is like for him living with Parkinson's Disease and still being a working actor。 He delves into when he found out and how he felt。 Despite all the setbacks, Michael J。 Fox never gets down on himself or the diagnosis。 He deals with everything head-on。 I can't recommend this book enough。 。。。more

After the first few chapters, I was feeling a little like if you've read one Michael J。 Fox book, you've read them all, but that changed very quickly。 This book focuses on one of the darkest moments of Fox's life - it starts with him falling in his kitchen and breaking his arm and then he backtracks to go through everything that happened leading up to that point, including very invasive spine surgery to remove a tumor。 Although this book is about an internationally beloved man's struggle with a After the first few chapters, I was feeling a little like if you've read one Michael J。 Fox book, you've read them all, but that changed very quickly。 This book focuses on one of the darkest moments of Fox's life - it starts with him falling in his kitchen and breaking his arm and then he backtracks to go through everything that happened leading up to that point, including very invasive spine surgery to remove a tumor。 Although this book is about an internationally beloved man's struggle with a disease that has been progressively worsening over the last 30 years, it is written with humour and heart。 Michael J。 Fox is one of my absolute favourite humans and every time I read one of his books, my love for him is renewed。 If you're a fan of Fox, this is a must-read。 This is a little bit of a spoiler: I totally cried when I finished this。 He said he suspects his acting days are over and in his acknowledgements he reveals he had to dictate this entire book because he can no longer write or type, so when he signs off "Michael J。 Fox New York City August 2020", it makes me wonder if this is the last time I'll ever read one of his books for the first time。 。。。more

Another wonderful read from MJF, always funny and self deprecating, yet wise, insightful and humble。 The work that the MJFF has done in furthering research into Parkinson's and medications is incredible and I always love to read Michaels updates。Optimism defines everything he does, a beautiful book, can't wait for the next thing one。 Another wonderful read from MJF, always funny and self deprecating, yet wise, insightful and humble。 The work that the MJFF has done in furthering research into Parkinson's and medications is incredible and I always love to read Michaels updates。Optimism defines everything he does, a beautiful book, can't wait for the next thing one。 。。。more

I like Michael J。 Fox and I started this book with full of excitement, however I admit that I could not continue reading this book。 It basically does not follow a timeline or any event sequence。 Just a book full of separate random stories by the author。I have read many memoirs before but there were concrete boundaries between events or because the timeframe was stated, I could get connected with what the author tells in that book。I could not do it with this one。

Laura

Humanity and humor。 Michael J。 Fox only gets better at life even as his health worsens。 He gifts us these snippets, and intimately reads them to us in the audiobook version。 Gratitude。

A beautiful meditation on life when you can’t have the storybook ending。
