Summary

A deeply moving, life-affirming novel about residents in a small Connecticut town facing everyday fears and desires—a lost love, a stalled career, a diagnosis—that pulls at the heartstrings and provides hope, for readers of Olive Kitteridge。

In the small city of Wharton, Connecticut, lives are beginning to unravel。 A husband betrays his wife。 A son struggles with addiction。 A widow misses her late spouse。 At the heart of these interlinking stories is one couple: Freddie and Greg Tyler。

Greg has just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a brutal form of cancer。 He intends to handle this the way he has faced everything else: through grit and determination。 But can Greg successfully overcome his illness? How will Freddie and their daughter cope if he doesn’t? How do the other residents of Wharton learn to live with loss, and find happiness again?

An emotionally powerful debut that immerses the reader into a community of friends, family, and neighbors, A Little Hope celebrates the importance of small moments of connection and the ways that love and forgiveness can help us survive even the most difficult of life’s challenges。

4。5。 Oh gosh I just loved this book。 I wanted to stay wrapped up in these stories for so many more chapters than there were。 Perhaps a bit trite, I just loved getting inside these characters and what was happening。 Everybody knows that life is both heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time, but there was something about the way these stories were interwoven that just hit me exactly right。

I love how real this story felt。 While I selfishly wish that I got more details/updates about the characters (I would read a whole book about each of them) I can’t deny how great this novel was。 It was like a breath of fresh air, to meet characters who were real and went through things that didn’t magically get solved by the end。 Don’t get me wrong, I love a happy ending (and there were a couple in this book), but I also somehow felt so normal and okay with some of the less-than-good endings。 It I love how real this story felt。 While I selfishly wish that I got more details/updates about the characters (I would read a whole book about each of them) I can’t deny how great this novel was。 It was like a breath of fresh air, to meet characters who were real and went through things that didn’t magically get solved by the end。 Don’t get me wrong, I love a happy ending (and there were a couple in this book), but I also somehow felt so normal and okay with some of the less-than-good endings。 It made me feel human, and like all the struggles I have that sometimes feel endless are not isolated; we all have bad things happen every once and awhile。 Also the last page… I would have cheered in joy but I was on a plane when I finished it! 。。。more

This book started our reading like a collection of short, sad stories, that were very loosely tied together。 Overall I enjoyed the book, but was thrown off when a chapter told by a new character would be thrown in very late in the book… and I kind of wish the characters were more closely connected than they were, but overall it was good。 The title is 100% fitting and my favorite line was “There will always be something to worry about”… isn’t that the truth。

Beautifully written。 I related to so many of these characters on so many different levels。 I couldn’t put this book down and read it in a single day。 Absolutely loved it ❤️“We vote because they can no longer vote。 We look at the ocean because they can’t。 We think about them when we put up a Christmas tree, and later when we sit there and gaze at the lights。 We do the things they can’t。 That is how we love them when they’re gone。”

I cried at the very beginning of this book, and a few times throughout。 It is so sad。 But, it is eye opening in the fact that it helps you realize that everyone is going through something and to be kind。

A great story of intertwining stories and shows the small choices we make that have such a great impact on our lives - great stories and a change of pace from what I normally read!

This was an interesting little book。 It is essentially a collection of intertwining short stories about various residents of a small Connecticut town。 The writing is mostly an internal dialogue of whichever character the chapter is about, and in that way felt a lot like Mrs。 Dalloway in style。 I enjoyed this one better than Mrs。 Dalloway, but it’s still not really my kind of book。 I liked how we were able to peek into so many characters lives and thoughts, but the overall tone of the book is sad This was an interesting little book。 It is essentially a collection of intertwining short stories about various residents of a small Connecticut town。 The writing is mostly an internal dialogue of whichever character the chapter is about, and in that way felt a lot like Mrs。 Dalloway in style。 I enjoyed this one better than Mrs。 Dalloway, but it’s still not really my kind of book。 I liked how we were able to peek into so many characters lives and thoughts, but the overall tone of the book is sad and sentimental, without much to balance it, and I find that to be cloying。 But it was well written, so if it sounds intriguing to you I would say give it a shot。 。。。more

This novel was simply lovely- giving me Oliver Kitteridge vibes。 This book had everything including complicated, but likable characters living in a very easy to imagine setting。 The plot kept you engaged, but held some heartbreaking twists。 All the while as a reader, feeling safe and that the author was setting us up for redemption。 The theme of hope echoed clearly through the story。 I was reading through happy, hopeful and triumphant tears during the last chapter。 Having lived a life of hope, a This novel was simply lovely- giving me Oliver Kitteridge vibes。 This book had everything including complicated, but likable characters living in a very easy to imagine setting。 The plot kept you engaged, but held some heartbreaking twists。 All the while as a reader, feeling safe and that the author was setting us up for redemption。 The theme of hope echoed clearly through the story。 I was reading through happy, hopeful and triumphant tears during the last chapter。 Having lived a life of hope, and at times disappointment, I know that so easily life can slip in either direction。 Beautiful debut, I cannot wait to read more。 。。。more

Not a badly written book but so sad at times。。。 It's like the author took all these sad scenarios that float around in his imagination and put them all together for these people that are somewhat connected。。。 I don't regret reading it but also I am relieved it is over。 I was thankful the way the ending played out。。 Not a badly written book but so sad at times。。。 It's like the author took all these sad scenarios that float around in his imagination and put them all together for these people that are somewhat connected。。。 I don't regret reading it but also I am relieved it is over。 I was thankful the way the ending played out。。 。。。more

3。5 stars。

I ugly-cried through parts of this and I don’t think a sad collection of stories could do that unless the writing were as heart felt (but somehow not sappy) as this。 This was more of a loosely connected set of short stories and I loved all the characters and their connections。

3。5 StarsA Little Hope was a good book, but it’s not exactly what is advertised。 There’s not really a main character(s) and in the description it states Greg and Freddie are in the forefront, but I don’t actually think that is true。 They aren’t even in ¼ of the book! We follow a LOT of characters。 I mean A LOT。 Like at least 10! Some characters have multiple chapters and some only have one。 Each chapter is almost like a stream of consciousness for that chapter's character。 There isn’t much actio 3。5 StarsA Little Hope was a good book, but it’s not exactly what is advertised。 There’s not really a main character(s) and in the description it states Greg and Freddie are in the forefront, but I don’t actually think that is true。 They aren’t even in ¼ of the book! I loved the character building and how their lives’ intertwined。 But I felt like it was lacking a plot。 Overall it was a great, quick read!

This book had me crying from Chapter 2。 I loved every page! So happy I picked this one for my November Book of the Month Club read!

This is not my usual genre, this is not a book that has a lot of pot twists or twist interns。 It is just a book that leaves three or four families in their life‘s together。 There’s a lot of sadness, but there’s a lot of hope there too。

Nicholas Brown

Beautiful story of a few people and families in a town that could be any small town in America。 Lives are lived, lost, intertwined, imperiled by choice and circumstance, and let slip away。

Lia

As the title suggests, one is left upon completion with a little hope and, in my case at least, a lot of tears。 This book pulls you into the everyday life of its characters and the ordinariness and humanness of each individual yet intertwined life grips you with its familiarity。 I found pieces of me and my own life in each fictional character, at times surprising me with deep emotion and intensity of feeling。 There is something beautiful and refreshing about the simplicity and sadness, yet dash As the title suggests, one is left upon completion with a little hope and, in my case at least, a lot of tears。 This book pulls you into the everyday life of its characters and the ordinariness and humanness of each individual yet intertwined life grips you with its familiarity。 I found pieces of me and my own life in each fictional character, at times surprising me with deep emotion and intensity of feeling。 There is something beautiful and refreshing about the simplicity and sadness, yet dash of hope, that Ethan Joella accomplished here。 。。。more

I don’t normally do reviews but this book was really interesting to me。 It’s almost like a sadder, much slower version of Anxious People by Fredrick Bachman。 But oh my god I lived for the ending。 And the characters were amazing。

Margo Cunningham

Lovely, a little sleepy。

Mary

Heartwarming story about several people, and struggles and hope for a bright life。

Shonda

Oh man!I love this book for soooo many reasons! There are a lot of characters in this story and I can relate to every single one of them in some way (except Natalie…smh)

3。5 stars, rounded up。 I loved the premise of this book and how all the characters tied together。 There were times, though, where I found my mind wondering off and I wasn’t so interested。 So it didn’t grab me, but technically it’s a good book with all the fixings, and warmed my heart at several turns。

Angelica

I really loved this novel。 Although there were quite a few characters to keep up with, each and every single one of their stories were enjoyable to read。 I got emotional and sad a couple times especially in Freddie and Greg’s story。 I felt as if I was watching a really good drama series tv show that I can’t get enough of。 If this is a debut novel, which I think is, Ethan Joella is off to a great start。 I can’t wait to read more of his work!

Becca Andrus

Would probably give this book 3。5 stars if I could! It was a quick read that was sweet and heart warming, while also discussing very tough moments that happen in people’s real lives。 I liked the multiple POVs and hearing so many characters stories。 It wasn’t my favorite book in the world but I thought it was very lovely

Michael Smith

This was a nicely crafted story, woven masterfully across several connected characters。 It’s not breaking new ground, and I likely won’t remember it in a year, but that’s ok。

Excellent character story。 I love when a book can blend several different perspectives into one novel and make me care about all of the characters。 I loved reading about each and every person in this book。 There’s plenty of loss and grief here, but there’s always Hope underlying even the worst of circumstances。 I thought this was the perfect read for this time of year。 It makes me thankful for all of the people in my life and helps me remember that the ones I’ve lost will always live on inside m Excellent character story。 I love when a book can blend several different perspectives into one novel and make me care about all of the characters。 I loved reading about each and every person in this book。 There’s plenty of loss and grief here, but there’s always Hope underlying even the worst of circumstances。 I thought this was the perfect read for this time of year。 It makes me thankful for all of the people in my life and helps me remember that the ones I’ve lost will always live on inside me。 。。。more

I loved this book but it was sad, it took me a while to read it because it was just sad and right now I’m grieving the loss of my dog so it was just a tough read but so beautiful and beautifully written。 I’d definitely recommend this but have tissues handy!

Wow。 Just Wow。 I read this in two sittings。 So beautifully written, this is a book with characters and stories that will stay with you long after you've finished it。 There are a number a characters and storyline but it's not confusing or difficult to follow。 One of the best books I've read this year, definitely top 5!! i had very mixed feelings。 overall i was satisfied but…- some storylines i liked better than others- it was super depressing (which i like but it was also a bit much)- literally every single character suffered from the death of a loved one。 SO MANY PEOPLE DIEDthe endings were all sweet though。 it turned out better than i thought。 maybe 3。5 stars。 idk if this review even made sense。 read it if u wanna be depressed and happy at the same time

4。5 stars 。 Sometimes a book is populated with so many characters that it’s not possible to know them enough to emotionally connect。 That was not the case in this impressive debut。 Impressive because I felt I knew all of them and could relate to their genuine emotions, even though I may not have personally experienced their situation。A diagnosis of a terminal illness strikes a lovely family。 A widow after years still grieves over the loss of her husband and reflects on her relationship with her 4。5 stars 。 Sometimes a book is populated with so many characters that it’s not possible to know them enough to emotionally connect。 That was not the case in this impressive debut。 Impressive because I felt I knew all of them and could relate to their genuine emotions, even though I may not have personally experienced their situation。A diagnosis of a terminal illness strikes a lovely family。 A widow after years still grieves over the loss of her husband and reflects on her relationship with her son。 The son grieving the loss of his father, of a relationship that’s been over for years, suffering addiction with a desire for things to be different。 The ex-girlfriend, why isn’t she happy now ?
