Summary

By the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of Writers & Lovers, Lily King's first-ever collection of exceptional and innovative short stories。With Writers & Lovers and Euphoria, Lily King's books catapulted onto bestseller and best-of-the-year lists across the country and established her as one of our most "brilliant" (New York Times), "wildly talented" (Chicago Tribune), and beloved authors in contemporary fiction。 Now, for the first time ever, King collects ten of her finest short stories--half published in leading literary magazines and half brand new--opening fresh realms of discovery for avid and new readers alike。Told in the intimate voices of unique and endearing characters of all ages, these tales explore desire and heartache, loss and discovery, moments of jolting violence and the inexorable tug toward love at all costs。 A bookseller's unspoken love for his employee rises to the surface, a neglected teenage boy finds much-needed nurturing from an unlikely pair of college students hired to housesit, a girl's loss of innocence at the hands of her employer's son becomes a catalyst for strength and confidence, and a proud nonagenarian rages helplessly in his granddaughter's hospital room。 Romantic, hopeful, brutally raw, and unsparingly honest, some even slipping into the surreal, these stories are, above all, about King's enduring subject of love。Lily King's literary mastery, her spare and stunning prose, and her gift for creating lasting and treasured characters is on full display in this curated selection of short fiction。 Five Tuesdays in Winter showcases an exhilarating new form for this extraordinarily gifted author writing at the height of her career。

Enthralling。 Each one is a gem。 Wish each one could turn into a novel

Can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a short story collection this much。

I felt like the first few stories were really heartfelt and I enjoyed them a lot but as the book progressed some of the stories were rather strange and I was kind of questioning what I had just read。

Other stories follow, each as engaging as the last。 People aching through the vanishings of loved ones, turns and splits of fate, reeking with disasters love causes, be it with a partner or family。 Motherhood and the how it dominates every crevice of your life, the struggling desire to create while consumed by caring for others。 The story that touched me the most, left a lump of feeling in my throat, was Waiting for Charlie。 An aging grandfather visits his granddaughter at the hospital bedside after a terrible accident, one that has left her body in ruins。 They are now, in a sense, alike- unfairly。 It’s such a short story but it ripped my heart out。 Lily King writes about the storms of our emotions, so often impossible to understand and find direction when you’re in the midst of it。 Well done。Published November 9, 2021Grove Atlantic 。。。more

The five star is elusive to short story collections for me。 There are several stories within this collection that I would re-read over and over and want to print in my mind so that I can never forget their beauty and mastery, and then there are a few that were just meh。 I think that King did a wonderful job with this collection however。 It isn't maybe a masterpiece overall, but it is overall good, with moments of pure genius。 Creature - 3/5Five Tuesdays in Winter - 5/5When in the Dordogne - 5/5N The five star is elusive to short story collections for me。 There are several stories within this collection that I would re-read over and over and want to print in my mind so that I can never forget their beauty and mastery, and then there are a few that were just meh。 I think that King did a wonderful job with this collection however。 It isn't maybe a masterpiece overall, but it is overall good, with moments of pure genius。 Creature - 3/5Five Tuesdays in Winter - 5/5When in the Dordogne - 5/5North Sea - 4/5Timeline - 5/5Hotel Seattle - 4/5Waiting for Charlie - 4/5Mansard - 3/5South - 4/5The Man at the Door - 4/5 。。。more

I’d almost forgotten I love short stories - it’s been so long。 And I didn’t really expect to like Lily King as a short story writer…after all, Euphoria…! And Writers and Lovers…! But man, she can deliver them。 My favorite, because it is so surprising and sweet: “When in the Dordogne”。

Five Tuesdays in winter is a collection of short stories, and, unusually, I enjoyed nearly all of them。 Lily King writes characters with a rich emotional depth, and here she proves she is efficient enough to achieve this in a mere thirty pages。 Was “When in the Dordogne” my favorite of the collection? Probably。

Alison

Interesting style and characters worthy of Lily King development, but none fully materialized。 Perhaps it’s the short story genre。 Couldn’t see the potential in longer story lines。

A unique set of short stories that I’d be happy seeing reading as full novels。 Some dark, some lovely。 I really enjoy the authors writing style, and here she’s able to really change her voice dramatically and successfully。

Marilyn

I was stepping outside my usual genre to read a book of short stories。 As usual, just when they were getting good, they ended。。。therein lies my primary dislike of short stories。 Lily King is a wonderful writer; but, I find it hard to write a review。 My thoughts lean toward needing better character development, an ending with satisfactory closure, story-framing, etc。 And, all these critiques lend themselves to novels - not short stories。

Kristen

How did I live so long without Lily King? I’m not sure but I’m glad those days are over。 These stories are so rich and so well developed, they each read like a novel。 My favorite was When in the Dordogne。

I really don't think that this book was for me。 I typically like to read more upbeat stories。 These just felt like she was hitting you over the head with a hammer, again and again。 The writing was good, but I felt like I could never place my feet with where I was in time。 But the stories started off grim and finished grim。 I'm out saying that I needed a happy ending but some lightness in any of the stories would have been nice。 There were a more than a couple of moments that I was vastly uncomfo I really don't think that this book was for me。 I typically like to read more upbeat stories。 These just felt like she was hitting you over the head with a hammer, again and again。 The writing was good, but I felt like I could never place my feet with where I was in time。 But the stories started off grim and finished grim。 I'm out saying that I needed a happy ending but some lightness in any of the stories would have been nice。 There were a more than a couple of moments that I was vastly uncomfortable with and they started out from the first chapter and continued all the way throughout the stories。 Like I said I don't think this was for me, but I read it and finished it and wrote a review。 。。。more

I love short stories, but it's incredibly rare for me to enjoy every single story in a collection without feeling that a few stories fell short。 Lily King's Five Tuesdays in Winter was that rare thing for me: a collection without a single dud。 I was moved by every single one of these these stories in one way or another。In Five Tuesdays in Winter, we meet characters in transition, at their most vulnerable。 These characters are deep in the throes of grief or unrequited love, coming of age, dealing I love short stories, but it's incredibly rare for me to enjoy every single story in a collection without feeling that a few stories fell short。 Lily King's Five Tuesdays in Winter was that rare thing for me: a collection without a single dud。 I was moved by every single one of these these stories in one way or another。In Five Tuesdays in Winter, we meet characters in transition, at their most vulnerable。 These characters are deep in the throes of grief or unrequited love, coming of age, dealing with divorce or parenthood, facing a loss of innocence。 These stories are all about love, in one way or another, and they are heartbreaking and hopeful, honest and raw。 Lily King is such a special writer, one who evokes emotion effortlessly in her prose。A few of the standouts for me (although as I said, I loved all of the stories):"Five Tuesdays in Winter," in which a single father falls in love with his only employee at the bookstore he owns。 I smiled my way through this entire story; it was so innocent, tender, and sweet, with such endearing characters。"When in the Dordogne," a coming-of-age story in which a lonely teenager is left in the care of two college-age boys, who are house-sitting while his parents are in France for the summer。 This is a story about first love, and about how people can come into your life and change it forever。 The ending, with its notes of nostalgia, was pitch-perfect。"North Sea," which finds a mother and her teenage daughter heading off for a long-awaited vacation。 The loss of their husband and father feels like a physical presence between them, and the mother hopes to use the vacation to draw the daughter out of her insular grief。 This is a raw, devastating story about trauma and healing。In short, Five Tuesdays in Winter is a stunning collection of stories, solidifying Lily King as a must-read author for me。 Thank you to Grove Press and NetGalley for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

So many lovely little vignettes。 My favorites were When in the Dordogne and The Man at the Door。

King’s well-written short story collection are on the dark side。 Many of the stories include women who are suddenly single and must deal with children that lash out due to their own pain as in ‘The North Sea’ where a German widow takes her snarly daughter on a seaside holiday she can’t afford。 My favorite story of the collection is more upbeat。 ‘When in the Dordogne’ has two boisterous college boys taking care of a teenage boy while his parents recover from the father’s suicide attempt。 They tea King’s well-written short story collection are on the dark side。 Many of the stories include women who are suddenly single and must deal with children that lash out due to their own pain as in ‘The North Sea’ where a German widow takes her snarly daughter on a seaside holiday she can’t afford。 My favorite story of the collection is more upbeat。 ‘When in the Dordogne’ has two boisterous college boys taking care of a teenage boy while his parents recover from the father’s suicide attempt。 They teach him to enjoy life and even approach a girl he likes。 In the last story, ‘The Man at the Door’, the man attempts to undermine the young mother’s confidence in her ability to write a novel。 Let’s just say King helps her to slay that dragon。 Yea! 。。。more

Pros: I really enjoyed this collection of short stories。 I was disappointed when each one was over because I wanted to know more about the characters in the stories, but I think that's the sign of a good short story。Cons: None that I can think of except I wish Goodreads allowed half stars because I think this collection might be a bit more than four stars。 Pros: I really enjoyed this collection of short stories。 I was disappointed when each one was over because I wanted to know more about the characters in the stories, but I think that's the sign of a good short story。Cons: None that I can think of except I wish Goodreads allowed half stars because I think this collection might be a bit more than four stars。 。。。more
