Summary

The first-ever, comprehensive and authorized showcase of legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie’s fabulous life and work, featuring hundreds of photos and dozens of never-before-seen sketches from his personal collection。

Cher, Carol Burnett, Bette Midler, P!nk, Tina Turner, Elton John, Liza Minnelli, Angela Lansbury, Diana Ross, Beyoncé, RuPaul, and Madonna。。。what do they all have in common? All have been dressed by Bob Mackie。

For nearly six decades, the iconic and incomparable Bob Mackie has been designing stunning, unforgettable clothing。 His unique, glamorous—sometimes hilarious—creations have appeared on Broadway stages, TV screens, runways, and red carpets worldwide。 For his pioneering genius and continual reinvention, he is a Tony Award and nine-time Emmy Award winner, a three-time Oscar nominee, and recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America。 For the first time, he has granted full access to his archives and personal memories to the authors of this lavish celebration of his achievements。

The Art of Bob Mackie is the first-ever comprehensive and fully authorized book showcasing Mackie’s work, from his early days as a sketch artist for the legendary Edith Head at Paramount to his current, cutting-edge costumes for pop stars and line of accessible, wearable clothing for QVC。 In addition to hundreds of glorious photos and dozens of dishy recollections from Mackie and his many muses, this gorgeous volume features never-before-seen sketches from throughout his prolific career, from Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr。 President” gown to Carol Burnett’s “Went with the Wind” curtain-rod dress, to Cher’s show-stopping 1986 Oscar look。 As other designers have burst onto the scene and faded out of fashion, Mackie has soared from success to success, always remaining relevant because he has always been spectacularly fashion-forward。

With a foreword by Carol Burnett and an afterword by Cher, The Art of Bob Mackie is a stunning must-have for lovers of sequins, beads, and feathers; Broadway shows and classic television; pop music and pop culture; and fashion with incomparable flair。

An absolutely breathtaking book。 Bob Mackie’s original drawings are beautiful, and paired with photographs of the actual fits (as my teen would say) plus the stories that go with them—immaculate。 Whether or not you’re a fan of sequins and feathers, you have to admit that the lines of Mackie’s creations are beautiful and always flattering to the bodies he designed them for。 This book is not just an homage to Mackie’s designs but to the stars and shows he designed them for。 I need to binge some Ca An absolutely breathtaking book。 Bob Mackie’s original drawings are beautiful, and paired with photographs of the actual fits (as my teen would say) plus the stories that go with them—immaculate。 Whether or not you’re a fan of sequins and feathers, you have to admit that the lines of Mackie’s creations are beautiful and always flattering to the bodies he designed them for。 This book is not just an homage to Mackie’s designs but to the stars and shows he designed them for。 I need to binge some Carol Burnett。 #TheArtofBobMackie #NetGalley 。。。more

This book showcases the best of designer Bog Mackie’s most creative ensembles。 He has worked in the entertainment industry for over 60 years。 His looks are fresh and hip, no matter the decade。 I grew up with the variety shows of the 1970s so it was a great trip down memory lane。 Thanks to Simon Schuster and Edelweiss for the advance copy。

I happily give this book four stars for the wonderful drawings by genius designer Bob Mackie and the photographs of his fabulous creations。 The book itself is a mishmash。 Confusingly laid out and scantily written, it does not live up to the genius it pays tribute to。 Bob Mackie’s drawings are absolute works of Art。

This book was received as an ARC from Simon & Schuster in exchange for an honest review。 Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own。I am very familiar with the designs of Bob Mackie and a lot of his creations I remember telling my mother that it's my favorite dress so it was a real treat to read The Art of Bob Mackie。 I was in awe of the original sketches and how breathtaking it was seeing them come to life on the bodies of some of the most beloved celebrities。 I loved This book was received as an ARC from Simon & Schuster in exchange for an honest review。 Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own。I am very familiar with the designs of Bob Mackie and a lot of his creations I remember telling my mother that it's my favorite dress so it was a real treat to read The Art of Bob Mackie。 I was in awe of the original sketches and how breathtaking it was seeing them come to life on the bodies of some of the most beloved celebrities。 I loved every costume he did for Carol Burnett Show and the extravagant outfits he did for Cher, Madonna and Diana Ross。 Even though I am not a fashionista, I was blown away at the creations Bob has done throughout the years and this would be a perfect keepsake nostalgic book to add to any collection。We will consider adding this title to our Biography collection at our library。 That is why we give this book 5 stars。 。。。more

This is a delightful read packed with photos of Bob Mackie's creations on all kinds of stars。 I was only able to view the first half of the book but it was filled with fascinating info, stories, original sketches and oodles of photos。 I was looking forward to seeing what designs he has done more recently and hope that content is as rich and gorgeous as that of the first half of the book。I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via Net Galley。 This is a delightful read packed with photos of Bob Mackie's creations on all kinds of stars。 I was only able to view the first half of the book but it was filled with fascinating info, stories, original sketches and oodles of photos。 I was looking forward to seeing what designs he has done more recently and hope that content is as rich and gorgeous as that of the first half of the book。I read a temporary digital ARC of this book via Net Galley。 。。。more

I’m a firm believer in fashion is art so I was thrilled to receive a digital ARC of The Art of Bob Mackie。 I am familiar with Bob Mackie’s designs and knew he had worked on the Sonny and Cher show, but I didn’t realize how prolific he was through the 60s, 70s, and even on to day。 This book covers Mackie’s career beginning in the early 1960s to my guess is today (the ARC I received was only the first half of the book)。 Included are stories from each of his eras including quotes from Mackie and pe I’m a firm believer in fashion is art so I was thrilled to receive a digital ARC of The Art of Bob Mackie。 I am familiar with Bob Mackie’s designs and knew he had worked on the Sonny and Cher show, but I didn’t realize how prolific he was through the 60s, 70s, and even on to day。 This book covers Mackie’s career beginning in the early 1960s to my guess is today (the ARC I received was only the first half of the book)。 Included are stories from each of his eras including quotes from Mackie and people he designed for, sketches of designs, and photographs。 I loved seeing the pictures of the finished product next to the Mackie’s original sketches。 Overall the book was a very fun read。 It would be a wonderful coffee table book for fashion lovers and television lovers alike。Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Schuster for the ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
